FLORIDA: Debbie Wasserman Schultz Wins Primary

Florida Politics reports:

In one of the most closely observed congressional primaries in the nation, Debbie Wasserman Schultz has defeated her Democratic Party challenger, law professor Tim Canova, to win another two-year term in Florida’s 23rd Congressional District.

Though all the votes have not been counted, Wasserman Schultz has the victory in hand, leading 58 percent to 42 percent. Wasserman Schultz has held her suburban Fort Lauderdale-based seat since 2004 and had never been challenged in a primary election until Canova’s emergence this year.

Tapping into the same anti-establishment fervor that catapulted Bernie Sanders to national prominence, Canova was able to raise an astonishing $2.8 million in his effort, receiving 200,000 individual contributions, what his campaign called a record amount in a congressional campaign.

Despite what the first sentence above says, in the general election Schultz will face GOP primary winner Joe Kaufman, who lost to her by 25 points in 2014. Kaufman is a darling of the far-right and has the “major” endorsement of Herman Cain.
