TEXAS: GOP Gov. Greg Abbott Hints That He May Push For An Anti-LGBT Hate Law Like North Carolina’s

Via press release from the Democratic National Committee:

Earlier today, while speaking at the Texas GOP Convention, Governor Abbott made clear that he supports North Carolina’s discriminatory law, HB2. Abbott even hinted that a similar measure could be coming to the Lone Star State, saying “I am working with the governor of North Carolina, and we are going to fight back.”

Texas Democratic Party Deputy Executive Director Manny Garcia issued the following statement:

“Governor Abbott clearly doesn’t get it – he doesn’t get the fact that hate and discrimination have no place in our state. As Attorney General Loretta Lynch made clear on Monday, this is ‘a great deal more than just bathrooms. This is about the dignity and respect we accord our fellow citizens and the laws that we, as a people and as a country, have enacted to protect them – indeed, to protect all of us.’

“Governor Abbott also cannot overlook the fact that, according to a recent report, HB2 can cost North Carolina up to $5 billion a year. This of course, is on top of the hundreds and hundreds of businesses that have already voiced their strong opposition to HB2.”

“HB2 is flat-out wrong, and we don’t need anything like it in Texas.”
