Equality Case Files Is Now A Non-Profit

As many of you surely know, for the last few years Kathleen Perrin at Equality Case Files has provided this site and other LGBT news outlets with virtually instantaneous reporting on breaking legal developments critical to advancing our movement. DOMA, state marriage rulings, gay adoption, ex-gay torture bans, court recordings, Kim Davis, Obergefell – you name it and Equality Case Files has been there, often in person and often scooping the mainstream media. Therefore it’s welcome news that Equality Case Files has formally incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and can now accept your tax-deductible contributions. From vice president John Lewis:

Equality Case Files now needs to ask those of you who can to extend your generosity to help cover the accumulated and ongoing costs of providing its services. These expenses include costs of obtaining court documents that EQCF then makes freely available to everyone, travel expenses for in-person reporting on trials and hearings, and building and maintaining a comprehensive online database of resources.

Are you affected by or involved in the cases EQCF reports on? Are you an attorney? A reporter? If so, you’ve come to rely on Equality Case Files to get clear and concise information about up to the minute developments in legal cases and to gain immediate access to the actual court documents to read – free from hype or spin. During the marriage equality litigation, Chris Geidner of Buzzfeed News described Equality Case Files as “an essential clearinghouse for the daily developments in dozens of cases that have percolated up across the country.”

You know that Kathleen — in addition to having a brilliant mind and unsurpassed commitment – has a huge heart. She draws inspiration from the connections she makes with you through Equality Case Files. You are a vital part of it all.

As this week’s horrors in Houston and Kentucky demonstrated all too well, the LGBT movement continues to face battles at every turn. I encourage you to donate to Equality Case Files. Consider it a “thank you” for years of work already done or an investment in keeping us all up to date on the challenges ahead.
