News agencies routinely write advance obituaries for famous people, particularly if they are elderly or in poor health. Yesterday Reuters accidentally published an rather nasty obit for George Soros, who is 82. An excerpt from the now-deleted story:
George Soros, who died XXX at age XXX, was a predatory and hugely successful financier and investor, who argued paradoxically for years against the same sort of free-wheeling capitalism that made him billions”. It goes on to describe Mr Soros, 82, as “an enigma, wrapped in intellect, contradiction and money”. The obituary also focuses on his role as a philanthropist , pointing to the “roughly $8bn he has given away through various charitable entities he controls”.
The mistake was widely mocked on right wing sites where commenters lamented that Soros still lives.
