Mattel Issues Mad Men Barbies

The New York Times reports: The dolls are part of a premium-price collectors’ series for adults that Mattel calls the Barbie Fashion Model Collection. Although there have been Barbies and Kens based on other TV series, among them “I Love Lucy” and “The X-Files,” the dolls will be the first licensed line for that collection, Mattel says, with a suggested …

The Man Behind Hiram Monserrate’s Anti-Gay Campaign

Village Voice writer Steven Thrasher has interviewed Rev. Ricardo Reyes, former NY Sen. Hiram Monserrate’s “spiritual advisor.” Reyes is the man presumably behind Monserrate’s new tactic of making his return to the Senate a defacto marriage equality referendum. The interview takes an interesting turn when Reyes pulls in Jorge, a supposedly gay employee to speak. It turns out, people become …

What Do We Think Of Linda McMahon?

I’m trying to figure out where we should stand on former WWE president Linda McMahon and her run for Chris Dodd’s Senate seat. The issues section of McMahon’s campaign site makes no mention of LGBT rights or same-sex marriage and a Google search on her name and those issues yields little. Dodd is retiring at the end of his current …

SF LGBT Center In Financial Crisis

San Francisco’s LGBT Center is asking the city for a $1M “mortage relief” bailout so that it doesn’t go under. Eight years after opening with great fanfare, San Francisco’s city-subsidized, $12.3 million Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center is on the verge of foreclosure – and is asking the cash-strapped city for a $1 million line of credit to …

Friendly Voices – Taylor Reveley

“Let’s be clear that William & Mary neither discriminates against people nor tolerates discrimination on our campus. Those of us at W&M insist that members of our campus community be people of integrity who have both the capacity to meet their responsibilities to the university and the willingness to engage others with civility and respect. “We do not insist, however, …

New York Tries To Ban Salt

A bill sponsored by New York Assemblyman Felix Ortiz (D-Brooklyn) would prohibit “the use of salt by restaurants in the preparation of food by restaurants.” The penalty for salting food would be $1000, but as the linked story wryly notes, the bill doesn’t stipulate if that’s $1000 per pinch or per grain. Read the complete dumbass legislation here.

Pastor Jim Garlow: God Decided To Pass Prop 8 Because Christians Fasted

Right Wing Watch: [Garlow] explains how he knew that fasting and prayer were going to be the key to passing Prop 8 in California, so that is why he personally convinced Lou Engle and The Call to move to the state for six months to focus on it. He explains that for the 40 days leading up to the election, …

Father Tony At The Winter Party

Father Tony had the grueling assignment of covering this weekend’s Winter Party for The Bilerico Project. I don’t imagine you’d care to look at a slideshow of hotties in Speedos, so definitely don’t click here. The Winter Party is an all-volunteer annual fundraiser by the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force which provides a boatload of money to local South …

Today a group of “major businesses” including health insurance companies is launching a nationwide ad campaign in opposition to the health care reform bill. Health insurance companies, excoriated by Obama over a recent spate of double-digit premium hikes, are helping …

Victory In Cow Town

Yesterday the city commission of Kissimmee, Florida voted 4-1 to extend LGBT partner benefits to city employees. That may not be earth-shattering news in the grand scheme of LGBT rights, but it’s interesting in that not very long ago, Kissimmee was a literal cow town, just a few thousand folks living on a few thousand acres of drained swampland with …

Tickle Me Massa

Yesterday on Glenn Beck’s show, former Rep. Eric Massa said that he’d had same-sex tickle fights with his staffers, prompting one of the most hilarious Twitter threads I’ve read since joining the service. According to Massa, it was those tickle fights that prompted the charges of male sexual harassment. (His story is changing every 12 hours!) And last night Larry …

PhoboQuotable – Slaggie Gilamonster

“In the spring of 2009, a few states moved to gay marriage and public opinion seemed to shift abruptly in gay marriage’s favor. But by May of that year, support for gay marriage just as abruptly tumbled. Why? “I believe I was the first person, in the National Review cover story The Carrie Effect, to publicly credit the impact of …

Save California Nutters: Roy Ashburn Should Resign Because He’s Gay (Even Though There’s No Such Thing)

And predictably, the wingnuts begin to eat their own. Randy Thomasson, execudouche director of Save California: Now he’s completely “out.” Monday morning on the radio, Republican State Senator Roy Ashburn of Bakersfield said “I’m gay.” But Roy Ashburn is mistaken. No one is “gay” because the so-called “gay gene” does not exist. What’s more, there are thousands of Americans who …
