Saying that she is a heathen who doesn’t believe in God and is therefore unworthy to hold public office, a group called Christians For Better Government has emailed thousands of voters attacking openly lesbian Houston mayoral candidate Annise Parker. An excerpt:
“Annise Parkers lifestyle that of being a HOMOSEXUAL is not the proper role model to lead the fourth largest city in the United States. The Bible speaks clearly against the lifestyle she represents, James 1:8 says, ‘A double minded man is confused in all his ways’. She does not believe in what the scripture says about her lifestyle which in return means she doesn’t believe in God.”
Got that? Atheists (and presumably, all non-Christians) are not eligible to hold public office. And even if you believe you are Christian, you aren’t unless they say you are.
IMPORTANT UPDATE: The email referenced above is apparently a fake. Via Off The Kuff:
I have just gotten off the phone with the Rev. Willie Wright, the president of the real Christians For Better Government, who confirmed this to me. CFBG did endorse a slate of candidates last week, and their real list is included below. According to Rev. Wright, he has been contacted several times in the past by “right-wing groups” who want to use the name “Christians for Better Government” and are dismayed to find that Rev. Wright’s group isn’t right-wing. That suggests the possibility that this is an especially dirty trick, as the CFBG name has been sullied by the fake email.
This isn’t even an example of Poe’s Law: “Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is impossible to create a parody of Fundamentalism that SOMEONE won’t mistake for the real thing.” No, this was the work of an actual wingnut slamming a group of fellow Christians for not hating. I’ll let the Victory Fund know to update their post. Thanks to JMG reader Val in Houston for the tip!
