Eurovision 2011: Norway’s Stella Mwangi

Eurovision 2011 is coming up in a couple of months and clips from this year’s entries are beginning to appear. First up for us is 2009 Eurovision winner Norway, whose entry this year is Kenya-native Stella Mwangi with Haba Haba. Reminds me of Boney M and that’s always a good thing.

Germany Wins Eurovision 2010

I sort of called it back on March 28th, although I really wanted Lithuania to win.

Eurovision Finals Live Stream

The 2010 Eurovision finals are underway in Oslo. The official Eurovision live stream requires some funky plug-in I’ve never heard of, so hopefully this feed from Bulgaria will work for most of you. UPDATE: Show’s over, folks.

Eurovision 2010: Finland’s Työlki Ellää

Now this is the Eurovision kitsch I love. Folk music, accordions, blonds, and bare feet. And not a pale American pop imitation.

Eurovision: Ireland’s Niamh Kavanagh

I prefer the over-the-top cheesy glitz of most Eurovision entries, but as power ballads go, this one is pretty good. (Despite a tiny hint of Titanic-ness.)

Eurovision 2010: Greece’s Giorgos Alkaios

Eurovision just posted this beefcake-y performance clip from Greece’s entry, Giorgos Alkaios & Friends. We like the friends. Giorgos ain’t too shabby either.

Eurovision 2010: France’s Jessy Matador

Congo native Jessy Matador represents France with a song that will also be used to promote this year’s World Cup. Trivia: The 1998 World Cup soundtrack album with the same title, Allez Ola Ole, contained the single The Cup Of Life, the song which broke out Ricky Martin as an grown-up performer. Perhaps due to the World Cup hype, Jessy …

Eurovision 2010: Moldova’s Olia Tira

Handicappers are listing Moldova’s entry as one of this year’s favorites. It’s fairly standard Eurodisco/pop, but catchy nevertheless. Like the violins, hate the sax.

Eurovision 2010: Romania’s Seling & Ovi

Rubber-suited Fergie-a-like hits Mariah-high notes with generic male co-vocalist. Not terrible, but instantly forgettable. Points off for the oh-so-tired fire/desire rhyme, which should have been retired even before Rick James and Teena Marie made it their showstopper.

Eurovision 2010: Estonia’s Malcolm Siren

One of the stranger entries and definitely one of the least Eurovision-y seen this year. Who does this sound like? Sigur Ros, maybe?

Eurovision 2010: The UK’s Josh Dubovie

The UK hasn’t won Eurovision since 1997’s comeback by Katrina & The Waves. And I suspect that this is not their year again. I suspect it a LOT. Stand back, the cheese is mighty.

Eurovision 2010: Lithuania’s InCulto

Lithuania’s entry is a strange melange of acapella, kazoo, rap and ska. And then it goes kinda disco at the end. Very catchy. Cute boys too.

Eurovision 2010: The Netherlands’ Sieneke

This song was criticized by the Dutch public as “too old-fashioned” when it was chosen as their Eurovision 2010 entry. It is very mid-70s Euro-pop, but that’s a good thing in my book. The lead vocalist is only 17.

Eurovision 2010: Albania’s Juliana Pasha

The 2010 Eurovision Song Contest takes place in May in Oslo. Here’s Albania’s entry for this year, Juliana Pasha. I like this. The remix should be great.

Norway Wins Eurovision

Norway’s entry, the Belarus-born Alexander Rybak, aka “the singing eybrows”, has won the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest. Insanely cheesy, but very typically Eurovision. UPDATE: After earlier (apparently erroneous) reports that Rybak had refused to pose for a photo with gay fans, Norway’s winner had this to say at the post-ceremony press conference: “Why did they (the Moscow police) spend all …
