TORONTO: 13 Wounded, 2 Dead Including Gunman In Mass Shooting At Crowded Restaurant District [VIDEO]

The Globe & Mail reports:

A young woman is dead and another 13 people are injured, including a child in critical condition, after a lone gunman walked along Toronto’s busy Danforth Avenue on Sunday night, randomly shooting pedestrians before opening fire on crowded restaurants.

The 29-year-old shooter died in a nearby alley after an exchange of gunfire with police, though it remains unclear if he was shot or died by suicide. His identity has not been released. The Special Investigation Unit is leading the case and has assigned six investigators and three forensic investigators. Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders confirmed the man used a handgun, but refused to speculate on a motive. This mass shooting comes just three months after a random van attack in the city killed 10 people and injured 16 others.

“When we can provide more information we definitely will, but right now it’s important we don’t speculate,” the chief said late Sunday night as investigators combed the street, placing coffee cups over dozens of bullets and casings left on the ground.

The Washington Post reports:

Andrew Van Eek, a resident who lives near the shooting, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. he stuck his head out of his window after the gunfire started. “There was a lot of commotion in the street,” he told the CBC. “I saw somebody come just down the sidewalk and shoot into Demitri’s restaurant.”

Van Eek told the network the suspect was a young white male, dressed in black, who appeared to be in his early 30s. Another witness told CTV he estimated the gunman fired about 20 shots. “And then, I saw the carnage as I ran down the street here to kind of follow the gunfire,” the man told the station. “I saw at least four people shot.”
