AM New York reports:
At least a dozen members of the activist group Rise and Resist dressed up in T-shirts emblazoned with the phrase “Abolish ICE” and dropped a flag with the same message from a balcony of the Statue of Liberty on Wednesday, according to photos posted to the group’s Twitter page.
The group posed in front of the iconic statue on the Fourth of July and let the black banner with white writing hang over the edge of Lady Liberty’s base.
“We will fight every day until we end our brutal racist immigration policy. We are at the Statue of Liberty demanding Trump and the GOP #AbolishICE, reunite families, halt deportations, and end detention as a deterrent,” the group wrote on Twitter.
ABC News reports:
A person has reportedly tried to climb up the Statue of Liberty this year on the 4th of July. WABC obtained pictures showing someone on top of the base of the statue next to Lady Liberty’s foot. US Parks Police says all visitors are being evacuated and taken off the island via ferry.
