Austin-Bound Package Explodes At FedEx Facility

CBS News reports:

The San Antonio Texas Fire Department says a package bomb bound for Austin has exploded at a FedEx distribution center in Schertz, Texas, hurting 1 person, a FedEx employee who apparently suffered a non-life-threatening “percussion-type” injury from the blast. The FBI and ATF are at the scene.

An FBI agent told CBS “it’s more than possible” that this package is related to the explosions that have occurred in Austin in recent days. The package exploded shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

ATF and FBI agents are at the scene of the FedEx facility analyzing components of the explosive device to see if they see any similarities of ingredients or components that are “a signature” that would link this package explosion to the other four bombing incidents in Austin, reports CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton.

  • PlutoAnimus

    Here’s the problem:

We live in an era of empowered, dangerous creeps. By announcing that prominent black families in Austin were being targeted, the authorities may have unintentionally inspired all kinds of nasty copycats.

Before the age of Trump, this kind of announcement made sense. Now I’m afraid it’s just a big invitation for the most deplorable of people to act on their hatred.

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

Unfortunately, you’re not wrong. What a time to be alive. /s

    • gaycuckhubby

they seem pretty confident that these bombs are linked. It’s hard for a copycat to copy the signature of a bomber especially this early in an investigation before details are released. I’m pretty sure these are all connected to one person
Also I would refuse to be an FBI agent. Last week people on this blog people were saying that the FBI was to blame for not calling it a hate crime initially and immediately

      • PlutoAnimus

People said the FBI was to blame for not immediately announcing a conclusion they hadn’t had time to reach? Oh, brother. Yes, that seems like a hard-to-justify reaction, logic-wise. From an emotional standpoint, however, I’m surprised most of us haven’t already completely blown a fuse.

Good thing we have places like this to vent and commiserate.

        • gaycuckhubby

          I agree!

Yes, there are lots of people saying that if the first two victims had been white they would have already been caught and they would have a huge FBI’s Force looking for him. Meanwhile the FBI was building up hundreds of Agents and is taking it very very very seriously.

          • I don’t get any sense the the FBI is dragging its feet, but the news media seemed slow in focusing on this story, and that might to be so disgusting it if weren’t part of a larger history of crimes against people of color being underreported.

          • MaryJOGrady

The FBI and ATF were on it right away. There was no foot-dragging.

        • MaryJOGrady

I used to live in Austin. For many years, it was the city of my heart. My fuses are blowing. J.m.G. is one of my most reliable sources of comfort these days.

  • Boreal

So that package had a tracking number. If they can identify that in their records, they might be able to figure out where it was handed off to Fedex.

    • There are a lot of ways to send Fedex that don’t involve interacting with a person. My guess would be that they left it in one of those FedEx boxes in a big city. I could be wrong. I rather doubt this person showed up and is on camera dropping off the package at a Fedex storefront. But people have done things that stupid so maybe. Even so, there would be clues there that they didn’t have before.

Note: they only found the Unabomber because the guy’s own brother recognized his writing style from the manifesto. I don’t think they were anywhere near finding him without that.

      • Boreal

Well as of now I would say that avenue is one of the few things they could look at since there seem to be no other clues that we know about.

        • I’m sure they’re doing all kinds of things we’d never think of. It’s frustrating but they are expected to figure things out with very little to work with. I can’t believe people are asking if this is terrorism. Are you afraid to pick up a package now? What kind of measures will FedEx, UPS, USPS have to implement and how much is that going to cost us in overtime and shipping delays? If I were in Austin I know I’d be super-terorrized right now.

      • pkb10r

As Ron Robertson said above, they still have to pay for shipping somehow–either cash or credit card. There will be a paper trail on the last bombing.

        • All kinds of things. Hairs, fibers, ink, etc. I’m sure every millimeter of that package has been looked at under a microscope by now. What’s left of it, I mean. Cameras near the drop-off box? I’m sure they are already all over that. I don’t envy law enforcement under this kind of pressure.

  • DaddyRay

Would that be the same ATF and FBI agencies that Trump is trying to undermine

    • William

Yes, but most of the bombs have gone off in Austin, a blue city.

  • blackstar

bet they will be part of the red hat gang behind this.

This is what I loathe about the GOP and its base. When George W. craps on the economy, they bitch that Obama didn’t do a perfect job cleaning shit up. When Trump crashes this economy (when, not if), they’ll mew and bitch about any Dem who tries to get things right even while the Dem is protecting his/her SS and Medicare and other benefits that they gobble like a kid gobbles skittles.

Jesus. So we’ve had three package bombs left on people’s doors, a tripwire explosion and now bombs being sent through FedEx?

    • safari

Makes me think there are multiple people involved.

      • William

        Or one determined nutjob.

        • Todd20036

This is terrible, but given the vitriol of the last couple of years, this is tragically not entirely surprising. Hate has been given license by people like Trump, InfoWars, Fox & Friends and many others. Sadly, I suspect there’s more to come. I can only hope people don’t let this cow them or keep them from standing firm against the wave of hate.

I’m not on Twitter but I love your Tweets. I’m with you though. The last few years of vitriol in U.S. has really gotten dangerous and it is most certainly due to the media outlets you have described and many others. Facebook has also inadvertently played a part as well.

I don’t think Facebook’s part in this was inadvertent.

We’ll have to see more data for sure, but it looks like it’s a bit of indiscriminate targeting. People from different neighborhoods different races. I’m hoping FBI agents know a lot more than us in the public do. And I hope they’re not feverishly chasing down theories like we are

    • safari

I’m going to go out on a limb and say if only Austin is being targeted…

      • gaycuckhubby

I must admit I don’t know the area very well, does that mean he probably has ties there? Or lives there?

  • Gustav2

Can someone please explain to me the difference between a ‘serial bomber’ and a ‘domestic terrorist?’

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

      NONE

….but don’t try to tell Trump and the Alt-right that.

    • gaycuckhubby

Ted Kaczynski was both. It’s just language that the FBI uses during an investigation. No one is trying to undermine the terror that he has caused and no one is treating this in a non serious manner

    • DaddyRay

      Skin color?

      • Mark

        Beat me to it.

      • David Gervais

Aliens are usually green or plain grey.
Human terrorist come in a wide range of colours.

      • tim870

The terrorist’s AND the victim’s skin color.

        • CJAS

          Bingo.

    • For one thing, terrorism is an act of violence for political purposes. The Unabomber, Eric Rudolph and Tim McVeigh were all domestic terrorists.

We do not know who the Austin bomber is, or why they are doing this. We do not know if there is only one bomber, or a series of copycats.

To address DaddyRay, Mark and Jean-Marc, we don’t know their skin color or religion, either. It’s way too early for that. You might very well be correct in your implied assumption- perhaps its some Alt-Right white christian male. Theres a lot of folks from that demographic that do this sort of thing. However, if it turns out that there not, well, how will your comments look then?

Lastly, nobody knows why theyre doing this. Maybe theyre just nuts. If the guy pops up talking about how space aliens from the planet Kolob told him planting bombs grew petunias, thats not domestic terror.

      • Gustav2

Kolob? Wouldn’t that would make him/her a Mormon?

        • The problem with Mormonism is that there are exactly one too many M’s in it.

      • MonochromeMouse

“Lastly, nobody knows why there doing this. Maybe there just nuts.” Considering the fact that every single domestic terrorist since the unabomber has been a right wing nut, and considering the fact that Austin is known for being a very liberal city in the middle of a very red state, it can be assumed with a high degree of accuracy that this is probably the work of some alt-right/neo-nazi nutjob.

        • Probability is not the same as certainty. The wave equation has not yet collapsed; Shroedinger’s Cat is therefore both alive and dead.

            Very nice analogy.

        • liondon#babydaddy

          You mean lone wolf.

      • DesertSun59

Today’s UPS explosion shows a copycat in action, I believe.

    • And explain to me why we need the qualifier “domestic” while you’re at it.

      This is terrorism. Period.

      • Gustav2

True, but there is a idea, perpetrated by the Right, that all terrorism is now furrin and mooslim.

        • Yes, to throw off the scent from the white supremacist terrorist groups they pal around with.

    • Friday

Serial bombers may be domestic terrorists, domestic terrorists may be serial bombers, the two don’t always overlap. There’s somewhat different psychological profiles associated with the serial bombing that make some difference in how to catch em.

  • gaycuckhubby

I hate when events like this so used to further political and ideological narratives

    • Gustav2

Yes, serial bombers generally do have a political agenda.

      • gaycuckhubby

Yep. And in the fog of the investigation people from all sides latch on to talking points

  • gaycuckhubby

Is this the first major serial bomber since the Unabomber?

    • TuuxKabin

      do the homework.

      • gaycuckhubby

        Ok

        Ps. Sorry to bother you

    • safari

To my knowledge. I’m sure there have been other bombers, but none as prolific with bombs in as short a period of time and in such variety.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I just hope it doesn’t take as long to find the guy. IIRC, we only found him because his brother recognized his writing style and turned him in.

    • JCF

Did anyone else see the miniseries about catching the Unabomber (that was on last fall)? It was really good. The main investigator became completely obsessed w/ catching him (such that his own mental health suffered, his marriage broke-up), pushing a novel theory that the FBI resisted (the decision to publish the Unabomber’s “Manifesto”, in the hope that someone would recognized the “ideolect” of his writings. And that’s what happened: his brother recognized it)

Here’s the listing. I don’t know if it’s available somewhere.

      • William

In the past Trump has been quick to denounce what appeared to be terrorist attacks. The truck attacks in NYC and Nice, France come to mind. For some reason he’s staying quiet about this. Maybe it’s because of Mueller ,or Stormy Daniels, or his cabinet secretaries ,or any of the other “distractions” in Washington right now. But it IS unlike him not to seize an opportunity to grandstand.

      • gaycuckhubby

I’ve noticed that recently Trump does not talk about domestic or international events. Only thing he talks about now is the palace Intrigue inside the White House. He has become much more isolated and insular than ever

People of color getting bombed…we’ll get to it. Big business… we’re on it.

    • MaryJOGrady

The FBI and ATF were on it right away. That’s what I heard from Austin news sources and local friends. (I lived there until 2014.)

    • William

The first bomb was on the same street where police raided a drug dealer’s house and seized a large amount of drugs and cash. That house looked nearly the same as the house where the bomb was placed. Police originally thought the bomb was retaliation by someone involved in the drug operation, and that they put the bomb at the wrong house.

  • William

Now there’s a report of a suspicious package at the Fedex cargo center at the Austin Airport.

    • MaryJOGrady

Oh, no. Gotta go talk to my Austinite friends. As a former Austinite, I am wracked with anxiety. Austin was the city of my heart for decades, until the overpaid libertarian tech types poured in and ruined it.

      • William

This latest alert is across 183 on McKinney Falls Parkway, not at the airport cargo facility as reported a few minutes ago.

It’s been nearly 20 years since I moved out of Austin to the wild boonies to the east.
