Steve Bannon Lavishes Praise On Mussolini: A Man’s Man Brimming With Virility And Amazing Fashion Sense

The Hill reports:

Former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon says he is “fascinated” by former Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. In an interview published Friday in the British magazine, The Spectator, Bannon praised the fascist strongman’s “virility” and “fashion-sense,” calling him a “guy’s guy.”

“He was clearly loved by women. He was a guy’s guy. He has all that virility,” Bannon said. “He also had amazing fashion sense, right, that whole thing with the uniforms. I’m fascinated by Mussolini.”

He told The Spectator that “fascism” was a term used to smear populism. He also insisted that the two — populism and fascism — “are not even related.” “Populism, fascism – who cares? It’s a media smear of the populist movement,” he said.

And Trump listens to him. This country used to kill Nazis. The first Indiana Jones movie had God kill Nazis, much to the delight of the audience. Now we have a SHOTUS and his base who openly love fascism and Nazism. Fuck.

I will agree with Bannon on this much, Nazi uniforms are very powerful. Remove the twisted crosses, and I’m there.

    • FAEN

Did you see the link I posted about nazism and Tennessee? Unbelievable.

      • Todd20036

        Yeah. They won’t condemn Nazis.

    • Devon Rodriguez

Trump still has Bannon on speed dial…because he does NOT know what the fuck he is doing and will take advice from this piece of shit because Bannon is “loyal”

are you asking bannon or those who want to maintain a semblance of democracy?

Using violence to punish them for protesting violence. Oxymoronic.

    • SoCalGal20

Maybe it was this school but I saw mention of a school where students had the option of coporal punishment or I think suspension or detention snd they took the corporal punishment. Good on them!

Also, corporal punishmentment should be banned everywhere.

      • SkokieGuy- playing Helen card

This must have been the school. The article says the kids chose corporal punishment. Agreed it should be banned at the Federal level. No state should have the option of permitting teachers to hit children.

        • Christopher

When I was in Jr. High I got into some trouble for mouthing off to a substitute teacher. She was being a bitch, and at the time my mouth and brain rarely communicated before I spoke.

Well, the next day I was called into the Vice Principal’s office and wasn’t given the choice of punishment that these kids were offered. He told me that I was to receive three swats from a paddle. I told him to call my mother before he did that or he’d be sorry.

          So he called her first.

I could hear her screaming at him over the phone. She said “If you lay one hand on my son I’ll have your ass in court so fast it’ll make your head spin. You are NOT authorized by me to deliver corporal punishment!”

He put me on in-school suspension for four days. The rest of the next two years was hell for me partly because this asshole made it his mission to make my life hell. A school official targeted me for harassment because he couldn’t beat me.

And there are a lot of those kind of people running schools even to this day.

          • SkokieGuy- playing Helen card

You were lucky to have a mother willing to fight for you. I was lucky enough to. Not only are some kids not that fortunate, certainly there are far to many parents that are fine with this. The spare the rod, spoil the child crowd. And if DeVos gets her way with more Xtian charter schools, this will become the norm, not the exception.

          • Christopher

The irony is that the Germans considered the Italian people subordinate to them. That’s what kills me about all these Nazi/White Supremacists…so many of whom are of Slavic descent…and even Gorka of Hungarian extraction. The Nazis considered all Slavs (Poles, Russians, Ukrainians, Czechs, Serbs, etc.) “untermenschen” (subhuman), and had no hesitation in killing them. Hungarians were considered descendents of “barbarous Magyars.” These morons clearly never studied/comprehended history.

Color me confused – not for the first time – didn’t the Italian fascists invent that term, and isn’t it derived from the Latin ‘fasces’ – a bundle of rods with a projecting ax blade, carried by a lictor as a symbol of a magistrate’s power? As Mussolini once memorably said, “Who’s zoomin’ who?” And BTW, Trump definitely imitates Musso’s butch face because he thinks it makes him look strong; same reason Musso made it in the first place.

Is Bannon heaping praise upon the leader, who nearly bankrupted his country…in a vain attempt to modernize his military, while launching an expensive attack on Ethiopia in 1935, which offered little in terms of resources and was a little strategic value…and lead to sanctions from the League of Nations that hurt its economy further? Is Bannon talking about the leader, who considered himself the senior partner in his relationship with Hitler, until Hitler marched into Paris? The same leader than bungled an invasion of Greece, and had to be rescued by Germany, lest Italy lose Albania too…and leave Greece as an exposed flank and British ally? This is the same leader, who didn’t even have its military branches effectively communicating with each other (some planes and tanks didn’t even have radios for communication), which in one instance saw the Regia Aeronautica bomb one of their own battleships? This same vain leader, who had to be rescued by Germany, only to find himself hanged, beaten, spat & pissed upon by his own people?

And Bannon thinks his virility & fashion sense made him a leader…SMDH

    • coram nobis

Mussolini also bungled the intervention in Spain. They went to Guadalajara in March 1937 promising to show their Nationalist allies how to do mechanized warfare. They lost the battle.

Their Spanish Nationalist allies were somewhat amused. They later had a song:

      Guadalajara no es Abisinia,
Los españoles, aunque rojos, son valientes,
      Menos camiones y más cojones

      (Guadalajara isn’t Ethiopia
The Spanish, even the Red ones, are valiant

While it’s true that fascism is often supported by populism, it doesn’t HAVE to be that way. Populism can serve both good and evil, depending on the circumstances. Our current wave of populism, sadly, has taken the dark path.

  • The alt-right, neo-Nazis, white nationalists, racist garbage — whatever you want to call them — are so absolutely fixated on manhood, virility, concepts like alpha males and cuckolds. Analyzing it requires all the depth of a first-year psychology paper but the main thing is, it’s all so pathetic, so clearly projecting, so much insecurity and fear wrapped up in shame-filled fantasies.

  • ColdCountry

“He was clearly loved by women. He was a guy’s guy. He has all that
virility,” Bannon said. “He also had amazing fashion sense, right, that
whole thing with the uniforms. I’m fascinated by Mussolini.”

Um….. Yeah, OK. Sounds like someone has a crush.
(How the hell would Bannon know what good “fashion sense” is, anyway?)

    • red-diaper-baby 1942

      Good point!

  • Phil2u

I was going to post a “portrait” of Benito e sua sposa post mortem , but they are still horrifying to me. They came to a violent end when their “populist” ideology revealed its true colors. Bannon loves to use fraudulent history to appear educated.

    • Much like Trump is a stupid person’s idea of a rich man, Bannon appears educated and deep to the stupid and shallow.

  • hdtex

My fervent wish is that Trump and Bannon meet the same end as Benito…. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/202cb00b850fc786f26b448ab273f7b7f61ce17b875087dc61a2dbc8e4ed932d.jpg

Thanks. Exactly the picture I was going to look for. I remember first seeing that as a kid in grade school as we learned about WWII. It’s stayed with my all these years later.

      • hdtex

Just noticed it’s posted down thread too.

Might I add, this “man’s man” appointed his son-in-law to high posts in his administration (Ciano wound up as foreign minister in his 30s), and later had him shot. Prince Jared should remember this.

    • TheSeer

      Vile.

  • red-diaper-baby 1942

    Words fail me.

  • MichaelJ

Too bad Sasha Baron Cohen’s Bruno didn’t get to interview with him. Bruno was able to get some famous fashion designer (I can’t remember who) to admit that the Nazis had style.

    • coram nobis

I would like to see Cohen’s Borat do an interview with Bannon.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Never forget that this is the man who had the ear of then candidate and now president Trump. At what point do the media stop whispering or dancing around the issue and finally come out and say it: “The Trump administration is a gang of fascist white nationalists and they need to be taken down, now!” The people and protesters have been saying it for months, but the media still remains relatively deferential, that has to stop.

    • what do you expect when corporate america is out of cards to play and people are tired of both parties giving away everything to the rich?

people are tired of the fact that no matter who anyone votes for here, corporate capture of democracy continues apace, and people still go hungry, and the bombs never stop.

the nation elected a degenerate because the nation is degenerate.

we’re in the sunset of an empire – a point most empires (including this one) reach right after their apex.

      Trump is symptom.

      • Jean-Marc in Canada

Can’t and don’t argue that, I’ve been saying it for some time now. We’re seeing the fall of an Empire, not in slow motion, but in real time. My only real fear is which power will fill the void, because strangely enough, the world seems destined to have at least one Empire per century.

        • shivadog

As bad as America can be I don’t think a world dominated by Russia or China would be an improvement.

  • JWC

Bad choice Bannon. Strange, your fixation with this asshole..All the things that you are not except the asshole part I guess you got to start somewhere

  • Bob Conti

Well, Stevie, maybe you should follow in his footprints… the the bitter end.

Stop paying attention to him. He just says shit like this to wind people up and distract us from matters of actual urgency.

  • ‘Til Tuesday

I always said that Bannon was the most evil person working for Trump. The fact that he had Trump’s ear for so long was and is scary.

    • Barry William Teske

There are way worse than Bannon, who in my opinion is just bitter tea, left alone to long, to steep.
I truly worry about those that keep themselves well hidden, that have ANY leaders ear.

  • Raising_Rlyeh

But the fairy tale ending is that he ended up hanging from a street pole as people spat on his corpse.

  • Steve Smith

Because invading African countries, murdering countless thousands and starting wars is so manly and virile.
Mr Bannon, one can but hope that you come to the same ultimate end as Mussolini.

    • wmforr

No animal lover would feed Bannon to his dogs.

  • Pip

Why are Nazis so obsessed with other guys’ virility?

    • wmforr

So was Hitler, you know. And Napoléon.

  • wmforr

Bannon praises the virile dictator. Trump slobbers over the shirtless Cossack. Even if Trump could remake our country in the image of Vlad the Poisoner’s Russia, he’s still be a fat, ugly slob.

  • John Caruso

One of Mussolini’s ‘best dressed’ looks was when they shot him and then strung his body upside down by his heels in the town square.

  • JCF

If Bannon had said this even 10 years ago, there would still be enough physically fit WW2 vets around to Kick.His.Ass.

Clowns like Donnie and Sloppy Steve always manage to come up with some new and pointless thing to prattle on about. And they want to appear to be so intelligent. It’s not working, boys.

  • Ann Kah

‘Scuse me for asking, Steve, but when did you become an expert on fashion sense?
