REPORT: House Investigators Learn NRA Lawyer Had Worried They Funneled Russian Money To Help Trump

McClatchy reports:

Congressional investigators have learned that a longtime attorney for the National Rifle Association expressed concerns about the group’s ties to Russia and possible involvement in channeling Russian money into the 2016 elections to help Donald Trump, two sources familiar with the matter say.

Cleta Mitchell, a former NRA board member who has done legal work for the organization, is on a newly disclosed list of people whom Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee are seeking to interview.

Democratic investigators for that committee’s Senate counterpart also are interested in what she may know about relationships between the NRA or its allies and wealthy Russians, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

I wouldn’t be heartbroken if the NRA is taken down along with Trump and the GOP in this whole Russian thing.

      Crimea River.

    • Randy Left Brooklyn

It would be the cherry on the sundae if Cleta Mitchell got what she has coming. Her background is she was married to guy who left her for another man and who subsequently died of AIDS, After her husband left her she became a virulent anti-gay bigot, as well as a hugely prominent elections law attorney for right wing groups.

One thing she did as a board member of CPAC was to get GoProud booted off the the CPAC speaker list. She has been a tremendously influential anti-gay bigot behind the scenes, pushing the GOP to do many of the nasty things it did.

Cleta Mitchell is one of NOM’s attorneys, working for them in Iowa.

I guess we will see how well regulated their militia is when it goes up against the government

    • ClevelandJim

I’ve heard wonderful things about that russian militia!

  • Tulle Christensen

“channeling Russian money into the 2016 elections” that would be illegal would it not?

    • Hryflex

Not if a Republican does it.

  • Gustav2

Gee, you mean PACs and all the “issues” groups who don’t report donors funneling monies may be a problem?

    Who knew?

    • Miji

Stevens, Ginsburg, Breyer, & Sotomayor for course.

  • DaveMiller135

Do they need to have had a special bag of money, marked “From Russia With Love, For Donald Trump Campaign”? It seems to me that it would be enough, that they took Russian money and contributed to the Trump Campaign. Or, actually, any US campaign at all.

  • netxtown

Why would the NRA be taking money from Russia to begin with? Is the member dues not sufficient to float their lifestyles and fantasies? What promises are they making in return for that Russian money?

Sounds like the NRA is just a front for a money laundering scheme.

    • Tulle Christensen

Most of their “members” that they claim are dead. and refuse to pay dues so they have to get the money to pay the officers of the NRA from gun manufacturers and apparently now foreign governments

      • And they are registered as a “non-profit” 501(c)4 social welfare organization!

    • Friday

The NRA is more a political lobby for politics’ sake now, Russia funds them because they’re a right-wing destabilizing influence in our society, plainly, and they keep using their big microphones to a) stir up trouble and unrest and b) Elect people who will do more of the same. All this suits Putin’s plans and practices in the world just perfectly.

  • Devon Rodriguez

When you don’t care about how your own people live, you can spend billions buying other countries’ politicians, powerful individuals and lobbyists. That is exactly what Putin has done for the last 19 years.

    • Guest

      The GOP shares the philosophy.

  • Devon Rodriguez

This is the reason for all the swift Republican retirements

Russian spies looked at the NRA and were flabbergasted by how willing these “patriots” were to sell their country to a hostile foreign power

Can’t wait for the FBI raid on NRA headquarters

  • barryearle

I get the impression that Mueller isn’t finding direct communications with the Trump campaign. Instead Russia used a lot of back doors, like the NRA and Facebook. Now that strategy may have been decided between the campaign and Putin’s people with the simple statement that nothing can involve Trump directly. We may never know. But plausible deniability seems to be at work here. Clearly, there is a strategy here to make sure there is no direct link to Trump.

    • Ross

“I get the impression that Mueller isn’t finding direct communications with the Trump campaign.”

      Huh?

What about the infamous meeting of Russians and Donald, Jr in Trump Tower?

What about the server inside Trump Tower communicating with Russia?

What about Trump’s trips to Russia? And his sons and daughter?

What about all the Russian-affliated people working for Trump?

      • Joe in PA

Mannafort. If there isn’t enough to connect Trump right there….

        • barryearle

We don’t know what Mannafort is going to say. Will he fall on his sword to protect Trump? Who knows? I think the one thing we do know is that Trump will not pardon someone who betrays him. Scooter Libby anyone?

Meanwhile, until Mueller has evidence directly linking Trump to collaborating with the Russians, he only has circumstantial evidence. In the end he just might try to connect Trump with a lot of lines connecting him to various people. But what he needs is someone–or better yet, someones–who were there when Trump planned and/or expressed support for Russia’s interference in the election.

      • canoebum

I wish the FBI could get its hands on that server. Wiped or not, I’m sure they could pick a lot of information from it.

      • barryearle

But none of this directly involves Trump. My conspiracy theory is that, yes, all this stuff went on. And Trump wasn’t directly involved. Plausible deniability. So he went to Russia. Unless Mueller finds either a witness or two or a recording of Trump’s conversations, he is still out of the loop.

    • Chris Gardner

I guess they knew that if Trump knew directly what was going on, he’d be stupid enough to admit it on live TV.

    • Joe in PA

I hear you…but there is enough smoke and if you look just a little deeper….

    • William

The server in Trump Tower, Jeffy meeting with the Russian ambassador, Manafort, Jared. There were very close connections between the campaign and Russia. They knew what they were doing and what it was illegal.

  • Todd20036

And yet the republicans on the committee concluded Trump was innocent. Oops.

    • Bert_Bauer

Foxes declare head fox innocent in chicken house slaughter.

  • jayjonson

Of course, the NRA funnelled Russian money to Trump.

    • justme

..and to how many others through out the GOP

  • gaycuckhubby

So the Democrats are continuing with their investigation? I love that.

  • Jefe5084

Comrades!! Move along. There is nothing to see here. (Say the trumpublicans)

Wouldn’t it be the sweetest thing if this investigation took down Trump AND the NRA??!!!!

      Yes but 494

Cleta Mitchell? Where have we heard that name before? Dumped buy her husband who came out as gay she’s rabidly anti-gay and also heavily involved in CPAC.

She should meet Jonathan Saenz from Texas Values. His wife left him for a woman. Together he and Cleta could self immolate in the ultimate antigay orgasm.

    Trump: traitor to the US.
    NRA: traitor to the US.
Republican voters: traitors to the US.
All Republicans in Congress: traitors to the US.

The coup was completed in Nov 2016. This (mess/chaos/porn stars suing/etc) is the result of that coup.

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

Is there any way to tie gun manufacturers themselves to this?

This is going to surface and bite someones ass

Cleta Mitchell: yet another name on the long, long list of people Mr. Mueller will be calling on for a chat. Good. While he’s after the administration’s connections to Russia, maybe he can nail the NRA’s participation as a bonus.
