Trump’s Lawyers Offer To Trade Mueller An Interview With Trump In Return For Ending Russia Investigation

The Wall Street Journal reports:

President Donald Trump’s lawyers are seeking to negotiate a deal with special counsel Robert Mueller that uses an interview with the president as leverage to spur a conclusion to the Russia investigation, according to a person familiar with the discussions.

The president’s legal team is considering telling Mr. Mueller that Mr. Trump would agree to a sit-down interview based on multiple considerations, including that the special counsel commit to a date for concluding at least the Trump-related portion of the investigation. One idea is to suggest a deadline of 60 days from the date of the interview, the person said.

Another consideration for the legal team is reaching an agreement with Mr. Mueller on the scope of his questioning of the president, which they expect to focus largely on his decision to fire former national security adviser Mike Flynn and former FBI director James Comey, according to people familiar with the matter.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

    LMAO!

    • ben-andy

Joining you and commenting that you don’t negotiate when you think you can win another way. And putting an end date to the investigation? That is like offering Trump that Panama won’t take his hotel if he takes his name off of it! Mueller got no real interest in ending the investigation. He LIKES putting mob bosses on the hot seat and he’s just getting up to the bigger fish.

  • Harveyrabbit

Sure. I’ll go rob a bank and then tell the cops that I’ll agree to be interviewed so long as they drop the charges. Happens all the time.

    • Scott Carpenter

No, it could work. Just one interview, Trump admits he did it and names everyone else involved, Mueller has them all arrested, investigation done. Piece o’ cake.

  • coram nobis

I’d go for a defense of non compos mentis, if I was trying to represent Trump. His “interview” testimony would probably be stream-of-semiconscious blithering and made-up facts anyway.

    • I think Trump is going for purgamentum init, exit purgamentum instead.

There would be plenty of creative ways to carry on an investigation. But none are bad enough options to warrant making a deal with the devil.

This is it! Why can’t the stupid people who still support him see that if he was truly innocent of any crime, he would co-operate with the investigation and provide them with everything he has or knows to prove his innocence instead of constantly labelling the investigation as a witch hunt and avoiding co-operation?

Oh yeah. Stupid people are stupid. They seem to like it like that.

        • The_Wretched

        • Joe in PA

IKR! I was trying to work that in somehow with the maternity ward comment. You said it better.

    • Lizard

There was a fatal shooting at a veterans’ home about a mile from where I sat in class and a quarter of a mile where my mother was working.

Pretty fucking sick of this shit and the excuses.

    • Steverino

That home is only about an hour’s drive from us. Hubby’s maternal grandfather (a WWI vet) was hospitalized briefly there way back in the day for Meniere’s Disease. Hubby may be eligible for hospice care there eventually, should he ever need it, and if I am not around or able to care for him. It is a beautiful facility, in the midst of Napa Wine Country.

    – This is basically attempted obstruction via attorney request (the ‘deadline’ anyway; seeking to limit scope of questions is legit)
    – No competent prosecutor would ever agree a ridiculous prosecution deadline proposal
    – It’s been clear to me for a while now that Donald’s legal team and senior advisors have been trying to keep him contained (and prevent him from committing still more attempted obstruction felonies) by telling him repeatedly the whole thing would be over soon (i.e., lying to their client, in his own best interest)

How to plead the fifth without pleading the fifth.

Trump will agree to an interview if Mueller promises to only ask the questions Trump wants him to ask, and only if Mueller promises to not prosecute for any evidence he does still manage to coax out of the Dearest Dotard.

What are the odds Mueller will agree to this? I’m guessing zero percent, if not less.

I suspect Mueller will say “No. I already know any and every thing Mr. Trump might say, and I know which are lies, what the truth is behind each lie, as well as the few morsels of truth President Trump sometimes utters.”

    One can certainly hope.

…and he can say, “Lordy, Lordy, I also have tapes!” 🙂

  • DesertSun59

Nothing 45 says and nothing his lawyers say today will have any meaning within 24 hours – after they’ve changed their minds.

I’ll just add my FUCK NO to what will no doubt be a bigly pile of the same response.

could this be a form of obstruction? Or something? Seems really inappropriate—-but very Trumpian.

  • brined2

maybe he can offer Mueller an interview with Obama

  • brined2

I’m wondering what the Fast&Furious investigation will reveal

You Breitbart assholes really need to get off Obama’s dick. He’s not president and you’re tired….

  • olandp

But I thought that Mueller exonerated the Dotard at least three times, maybe even more.

    • Max_1

      Case closed by January…

  • Max_1

Because it’s never a quid pro quo when Trump offers a quid pro quo…

  • SoCalGal20

    LoL no.

Uh… if the Special Prosecutor requests your presence at an interview before the Grand Jury, isn’t that, kinda, you know, not a request?

  • Canadian Observer

I wonder how much Trump’s understanding of the legal system is the result of his family’s ability to “settle” the prosecutions for civil rights violations they indulged in. Just because one was not found guilty in a court, doesn’t mean one is in anyway innocent. I hope Mueller sees the process through to the conclusion, and that Trump comes away incarcerated better educated.

    Are you fucking kidding me?

  • Ore Carmi

“Yes… A meeting with me will end the Russia investigation alright… It’ll bring it to a nice full close.”

  • DaveMiller135

I’m trying to concentrate. This is, after all the President of the United States. But, in the back of my mind I hear Carol Burnett, as the court stenographer, muttering to herself, “Guilty As Sin.”

  • Gregory In Seattle

Anyone else think that sounds like a bribe?

  • Charles Nelson

Al Capone: “So agent Elliot Ness…all you have to do is drop all the charges, if you want to talk to me”…Even better than pleading the Fifth!

  • Gianni

Let’s trade Trump for a bag of shit tied in the middle. We’ll never notice the difference.
