FLORIDA: Clinton HHS Secretary To Run For US House

Miami’s ABC affiliate reports:

Former University of Miami President Donna Shalala is running to replace retiring Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, according to paperwork filed with the Federal Election Commission.

Shalala, a Democrat, served as Health and Human Services secretary under President Bill Clinton. Well-known in the region, Shalala, 77, is considered a top choice for the Democratic nomination.

With access to the Clinton family’s big-pocketed donors, Shalala has the potential to be a formidable fundraiser. But some of her strengths could be also be weaknesses. Another Democrat in the race, Miami Beach Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez, told Politico earlier this year said that Shalala represented the “elite” of the party.

Shalala, 77, has never run for an elected office.

  • bkmn

I like her but it is time to turn things over to another generation.

    • AmeriCanadian

There is something to be said about experience.

      • bkmn

True, but we need to groom the next set of leaders.

        • AmeriCanadian

          Totally agree.

        • JustDucky

What we need is to stop letting Republicans run unopposed. We should do everything we can to make them fight for every last seat at all levels of government. And purity (or age) tests let the perfect become the enemy of voting those fuckers out.

          • bkmn

If there were no other candidates I would support her stepping into the race, but there are other candidates.

      • greenmanTN

There is that. But how many years can a 77 year old person reasonably expect to effectively serve? Electing a younger person comes with the expectation that if they do a good job for their state and constituents they will be the incumbent candidate for many years.

        • SoCalGal20

She’s running for a house seat so she’ll be up for reelection in two years. I’d rather have a 77 year old running for a House seat than running for President or the Senate.

          • greenmanTN

As much as I hate to say it, that 2 year term should probably be increased. By the time they’re in office they’re working on their re-election campaign.

          • The_Wretched

Right but the option is to run someone else. Not where is the best place for a 77 year old.

        • justmeeeee

She can easily take the seat that’s been held by a rethug for many years. Then after a term or two she can turn it over to another Democrat.

        • AmeriCanadian

I’ve known some extremely sharp 70 and 80 year olds. And I’ve known some 60 year olds that were in the process of slowing down and giving up. I think it depends on the person.

      • Silver_Witch

True experience is great. So is fresh blood and new ideas that work.

    • Rambie

If there wasn’t any other democrats running I’m happy she is

“Another Democrat in the race, Miami Beach Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez, told Politico earlier this year said that Shalala represented the ‘elite’ of the party.”

  • another_steve

I worked in HHS when Shalala was there.

    Good woman, she.

  • JoeMyGod

It sort of feels like Democrats are throwing everybody out there to capitalize on the anti-Trump wave. Shalala is definitely a big surprise.

    • RaygunsGoZap

      It’s like a “Now That’s Politics!” greatest B sides

    • Marc: The Social Gadfly

If all the people, who worked for and with the Clintons and the Obamas, ran for office and won, I’d laugh my ass off at Rethuglicans and die a happy man.

    • The_Wretched

      On the other Hand: https://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/is-there-a-problem

Josh Marshall on the DCCC. They seem to not want to win races and are enforcing a purity of loyalty to the donor class (DEM establishment) on primary candidates.

      • Pip

I stopped giving money to them. When I asked them to account for the money donated so far they stonewalled me. Any other group happily provides this information, the DCCC seemed to be hiding it all. I’ll put my money in more transparent groups.

I have now had to report them for harassment since they started calling me no less than six times a day seven days a week trying to get me to donate to them again.

        • Judas Peckerwood

As someone who worked for the DCCC for years, I can tell you that your money is much better spent on individual candidates’ campaigns. Otherwise, a good chunk of what you give goes to electing Blue Dogs.

It’s time to bring back tar and feathers.

    • bkmn

I will counter that with good news – the kids have organized gun control marches in all 50 states.

    • Paula

What? These people are beyond crazy.

      • RaygunsGoZap

I’d prefer public stoning. Them, seperated and running for their lives through dusty small
town streets, head throbbing from the last rock, a little trail of blood running into the corner of their eye.

        SHE WAS MY FRIEND! *thunk!*

I TAUGHT HER FOR 5 YEARS! *crack!*

        SHE LIVED ACROSS THE STREET!
        *splat!*

        – fin –

    • KnownDonorDad

If it were in my power, I’d strike down the conspiracy theorists Old Testament-style and resurrect two slain kids in their place.

      • RaygunsGoZap

        I like that.

  • disqus_D9pH1OIG67

    She’s too damn old.

  • band

    Still not a lesbian?

    • HanyBaal

She is of Lebanese descent, tho.

      • band

        Close, but no . . . cigar.

        • Cipher

When it comes to women involved in the Clinton Admin., let’s avoid discussing cigars… Hope she wins bigly!

    • Joe in PA

Did Barbara Mikulski ever come out? Tons-o-rumors.

  • 77.

It’s all about money. I am in my 40s, and I have to say that. I don’t have very much money. But I’m very tired of old people being in control. I was a Bernie Bitch. But I don’t want him to run again. Kamala, Booker, someone young, instead.

I’m sorry if I offend people here, but I’m tired of old people being in charge.

    • pansarsweden

Here you only have to be 18 to be an elected member of parlament, and while that is very young I do feel it is important to have representation of all ages. But as the ruling class just continues to age and hold onto all the power and money, the day will soon come when there is no viable young people to move up and in to congress and that frightens me.

    • Rich

A thousand times YES. It’s like the Dems just want this one win and not set up for the future. And they do this over & over, just look at the last few VP picks for example: Kaine, Biden, Lieberman. John Edwards was the only “future leader” as VP in the last 20 years (granted, that didn’t work out either LOL).

  • band

Hmmmm. 77. Suffered a stroke in 2015. Granddaughter of an immigrant who snuck in across the border from Mexico. Former head of the Clinton Foundation. Rumored lesbian.

Shalala will draw intense fire — both from the Republicans AND the Bernie Bros. Despite the enviable financial backing, I doubt she’s the most viable D candidate for a district long held by Ros-Lehtinen.

  • justmeeeee

Nice to have yet another member of the church in congress.

  • Longpole

Was she the free condoms lady? Or did she say people say that masterbation will prevent STD’s?

    • The_Wretched

blast the past tangent? Aren’t you thinking about Joycelyn Elders?

Not all black women are the same person.

      • Longpole

All politicians look the same except for Trump with his orange hair.

  • alc2018

she really is too old for the job, even though I hate saying it. I saw her once or twice here in MACY*S in DC being followed with secret service police while shopping in the ladies lingerie department heading out to the escalator. It was kinda bizarre seeing men in dark suits following this short lady in a gray suit herself frowning. Then I thought oh that’s just Shalala, anywho…

  • JWC

    One to watch

  • prixator

Has anyone in the Dem party looked at who is winning elections in other Western countries? The leader of the party that won most votes in Italy is 31 years old. As is the recently elected chancellor of Austria. The PM of New Zealand is 37, Varadkar of Ireland is 39. Macron of France just turned 40. Justin Trudeau is an elder statesman now at 46!

I just think 77 is just too old to running for the first time for elected office. Hell, I think it’s too old. Period. (And I’m almost 60.)

  • Snarky

She’s got name recognition, but she’s not universally loved by Dems in Miami. Her behavior toward the incredibly underpaid janitors when she was president of the University of Miami and they were trying to organize a union (and she was paid 37 times their salary) is well known. What will definitely get a lot of attention during the time of #MeToo is her settlement of a sexual harassment case involving a professor and a student. She made sure the accused harasser was ushered out the door with an early retirement, but left otherwise unpunished, and because Shalala ensured he avoided a faculty senate hearing over the charges, he continued saying the harassment was a consensual relationship, which the victim always denied.

Another student, who was accused of rape, was suspended for a semester. His accuser complained that the school’s penalty for plagiarism is worse.

In 2018, and especially from someone so close to Bill Clinton, the timing is bad for stories like that about Shalala. If she’s cast as an anti-union, harassment enabling Clintonite then it won’t be a cake walk for her.

  • Rich

What a shocker, another really old Dem running. SRSLY, we can’t find anyone good that’s younger??? I don’t want to be ageist but a) 77??? and b) where is our bench of up-and-coming leaders?

  • buckguy

Her mother was a career backroom pol in Cleveland. She’s hardly a neophyte. she was horrible on labor relations at U of Miami and deserves to be defeated.

  • Kevin Andrews

One more good Republican that the Democrats put up like Killary. Don’t think that will fly with the Calle Ocho and Latin communities. The Democrats haven’t learned that it isn’t business as usual as Fascist-Lite owned by “good” Corporate interests rather than the Republican MIC’s “bad” Corporate interests.
Where are We The People in this mess?

  • clay

Flying Monkeys never die, we just take to the skies.

  • ECarpenter

She lied tirelessly about marijuana, claiming it was as dangerous as heroin and had no redeeming medical uses. Does she still cling to her Reefer Madness views?

We need someone who’s more fact-based and more in touch with the modern world. She’s too old and set in her ways. I am too, but I’m not running for office!

  • andrew

Shalala had her turns at bat and did well, but at 77 she should step aside and allow other much younger progressive Democrats their turn at bat. At 77 she is not likely to build up the kind of seniority necessary to become an important player in the House.

  • Danieruw

David Richardson, the first openly gay legislator in FL history, is also running for this seat. He is a democrat and considerably younger. I don’t live in this district, but here is a link for those interested.
