Arrest Made In Theft Of Frances McDormand’s Oscar

The New York Post reports:

The man who allegedly swiped Frances McDormand’s Oscar statue has been arrested.

The LAPD confirmed to Page Six on Monday that the man has been arrested and booked on felony grand theft charges. According to TMZ, his name is Terry Bryant and he went so far as to shoot video of himself with the award.

Earlier on Monday, USA Today reported that the “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” actress was getting her trophy engraved at the post-Oscars Governors Ball when it disappeared.

Don’t mess with Frances. Only a fool messes with her.

  • Treant

She will hunt you down, catch you feeding your buddy (who you shared hookers with) into a chipper-shredder, and arrest your ass.

    • dogdadny

      while pregnant!

  • mikemmiv

Fell in love with with Francis when I saw her in Fargo.

My favorite FMcD movie is Almost Famous.

      • Gerry Fisher

        Gawd, I love that movie.

Amazingly subtle nuanced performance in Aeon Flux.
She spoke volumes without uttering a single word. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/1285a5488acae5025db3aec4ad41faa588b287fd735ca6b848027ed9c6fd6a53.gif

I love me some Charlize, and also loved Aeon Flux, even if most of my friends didn’t…

          • Ginger Snap

Loved the original from MTV and the movie and my friends didn’t get it either.

    • ‘Til Tuesday

And the “Fargo” TV series has been great, even without her.

      • Lars Littlefield

        Yah, you betcha.

  • RaygunsGoZap

I watched 3 Billboards last night instead of the Oscars. I quite enjoyed it: great hook but stupid plot. Very emotionally manipulative, which felt good. Ultimately, it wasn’t great and I don’t think she deserved to be nominated for that performance.

    • Treant

It was not a fantastic year for the Oscars and most of the movies just seemed kind of flat.

      • RaygunsGoZap

I did enjoy the scene with the priest. Again, just pandering to the audience but what a joy that dialogue was. I’d like to see that same dialogue just dropped into movies apropos of nothing.

    • Kevin Perez

I played Kerbal Space Program (Poor Jeb). Movies just aren’t a priority.

    • MrBlifil

Whatever you think of the film as a whole, I think it’s silly to say she doesn’t deserve an Oscar. She brought everything a leading lady can bring to a role and then some. Yes the narrative falls apart preposterously, but that has nothing to do with any individual performances (thought the rest of the women in that film were uniformly HORRIBLE).

      • RaygunsGoZap

Um…no. I’ve seen Frances in many other films and this is not her best work. Claiming that the movie, plot and all up is horrible but that out of that rises an Oscar-worthy performance…no. That’s silly, IMO.

        • Gerry Fisher

I think it’s important to keep in mind that this didn’t have to be her best performance. It just had to be better than the other nominated performances. (And the Academy just *loves* to give “well, it’s about time you got another Oscar” awards.)

          • RaygunsGoZap

            Fair Enough! 😆

Fun fact: Frances, the Coen bros, Kathy Bates and Holly Hunter all shared a house in Silverlake wheh they started in the business

    • Harveyrabbit

Wow, that was some seriously talented household. Maybe something in the local water supply.

    • Lars Littlefield

That house had to be torn down and native elders of the Chumash tribe were called in to perform several spiritual cleansing. The new structure that sits in its place remains a rental property with a high turnover of tenants. 😉

In another Academy Awards first – Black man grabs the Best Actress Oscar.

    • William

      I blame Faye and Warren.

    • Lars Littlefield

He may have been black, but I suspect just being a silly flaming queen with a diva complex may have had more to do with the man’s motive.

I didn’t even know Kanye West was there. He would have grabbed Taylor Swift’s Grammy, but he knew she would kick his ass and then write a best-selling single about it.

  • Leo
    • Ninja0980

No say to sad, and no one shows that better then Macro Rubio, who used this as a justification for getting back in the Senate race and is still an anti-LGBT bigot.

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

There’s no question there’s a racist/homophobic bias, but consider that when 20 white kids were mowed down in Newtown, the response was a collective shrug and screams of MORE GUNS. So while it’s fair to point this out, it’s a bit of misfire (pardon the pun). Also, if it takes the students at Parkland, many of whom are not white and/or straight, to finally break the cycle and make change happen, so be it. Big Picture and Perspective, please.

      What was he expecting

      • TrollopeReader

        hopefully not $130,000 ….

    • Rex

Not like he wasn’t aware of Trump’s shady payment practices.

      • unsavedheathen

But he claimed to the press when this came out that reimbursement was never expected. That it was coming out of his pocket.

        • lymis

Actually, he said that he used his own funds to “facilitate” the payment. He clearly intended people to believe that the payment came from his own funds and he never corrected the media when they ran with that interpretation – so it’s clear it’s what he wanted to be believed.

        • Rex

So, Trump got the hooker and Cohen got stiffed.

      • Chris Baker

Trump probably said “I didn’t agree to pay her $130,000, you did. If I had negotiated, I would have agreed to pay nothing, which is what I will be paying you. If I had negotiated, SHE would be paying me for the privilege.”

Much of the news has suggested that she lost the Oscar. That’s a bit dishonest because it implies that she did something wrong, or was too distracted to notice. No, the thing was stolen.

    • Wisterley

Those thing are taken from your hand as you come off the stage.

      • Publius

That is true, but this happened at the Governor’s Ball, which is an after party. There’s an engraving station there, and that’s where it was stolen.

I posted this earlier, but I feel people should take a closer look at the NYTimes article.

What did Frances McDormand mean in her speech last night???

Watching the Oscars, I listened to Frances McDormand’s speech, and did NOT understand something, that she said. (She may be an Excellent Actor, but her public speaking I find confusing. lol)

She used a phrase: ‘Inclusion Rider’. I had no idea as to what it meant. The NYTimes, has an article, that explains what she meant, that we should ALL read.

“What Frances McDormand Meant by an ‘Inclusion Rider’ at the Oscars”

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/05/movies/inclusion-rider-frances-mcdormand-oscars.html

    • Wisterley

I didn’t watch the show but I know what a rider is. Just as I know what ‘favored nations’ means.

      • Hank

This rider is specific to what actors can do to get MORE diversity in their films/projects. Read the article.

        • Wisterley

That seems to me exactly how not to do things.

          • Lars Littlefield

Are you a white heterosexual male? Just asking. No offense.

          • Wisterley

No, Im not. And I’ve worked in the theatre – different, I know, but similar rules apply – as an actor and writer. This idea comes from academia and looks it. Seems to have no hands-on knowledge of how things get done. And don’t get me wrong, I think it’s way past time for things to change but let’s be realistic so that something could maybe get done. For example: in the classic theatre the ratio of women’s roles to men’s is what, 5 to 1? Less? In Shakespeare’s histories, 20 to 1? In contemporary plays it’s roughly 3 to 1. Backstage is different but has changed dramatically over the past 20 years. Even the stagehands union, bastion of tradition, has greatly eased. Classical music does okay and so does the opera. Jazz remains largely a boys’ club. I find the Oscars’ stuff to mostly be grandstanding. The onscreen business will change as markets change. Hollywood makes the movies, with the racial/gender mix, that it thinks its audience wants to see. That’s what needs to change and the business will follow.

          • Lars Littlefield

I would be amused to see the ratio of male members of your local chapter of IATSE compared to female. I’d like to see the same info for your regional SDC.

          • LLDEM

SAG currently already has incentives for producers and directors to hire more elderly and minority actors in speaking roles. It usually shows up by way of additional money alotted to film projects to keep from crossing over into a higher budget bracket, thus a higher salary for the actors.

        • Wisterley

Trouble is, in the real world, actors can’t make these calls. They’re the province of the director or producer. I don’t object to the goal, I only object to the grandstanding aspect.

    • Lars Littlefield

That would be a rider clause in a contract that promises to meet a specific request. In the case of McDormand I suspect she is interested in seeing riders that assure that 50 percent of women and minorities be hired to work on a film crew — as many as white men who historically are over represented in film production. It’s becoming a new thing to see “best girl” listed in the credits where traditionally the position has been called “best boy” which is a job title describes the the assistant to the head electrician or head gaffer.

    • Bambino

Jessica Chastain did something similar for Octavia Spencer and Jada Pinkett Smith on their up coming movie. Spencer and Smith would have otherwise make 5 times less than Chastain. All three also got higher rate as a result of Chastain negotiation.

An Oscar weighs a bit over 8 lbs. I’m almost sure that the statue they hand them on stage is not the real thing. They pick it up back stage.
