Trump Golf Club Settles Lawsuit For $5.45 Million

Reuters reports:

A Florida golf club owned by U.S. President Donald Trump agreed on Friday to pay $5.45 million to settle claims by former members that it wrongfully refused to refund their deposits when they wanted to resign.

The payout is more than 94 percent of the $5.77 million that U.S. District Judge Kenneth Marra, who must approve the settlement, last February had ordered the Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter, Florida, to pay. Lawyers for the golf club and the Trump Organization did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The lawsuit began after Trump changed membership rules for the club, which he had acquired from Ritz-Carlton in November 2012. Under the old rules, members who wanted to resign could keep playing golf until their replacements were found. But Trump declared in a letter that “as the owner of the club” he did not want them using the club, and “you’re out.”

  • Pretty typical of Donald’s kleptocratic impulses: “Money in my possession, no matter how I acquired it, belongs to me and no one else.”

This is why he counts loans as income and net worth (except at tax time, of course). It’s also why he keeps goat-barking that the United States “gave” Iran billions of dollars in cash when in fact all that happened was frozen Iranian funds were unfrozen as a result of deal negotiations.

It’s a hell of a thing though that Donald not only wanted not to issue refunds, he also wanted to be able to kick out existing members at will. He’s such a goddamned classless crook.

In the wake of the Parkland FL school shootings Trump proposed to arm teachers or other school personnel to keep students safe from his unhinged followers. Nikolas Cruz posted selfies of himself wearing a MAGA hat on social media so unless he stole it he contributed to the Trump campaign.
The question left unanswered was where is the funding for buying guns, ammunition, gun accessories, training and certification coming from. I propose that a tax be enacted on firearm and related sales to cover the costs of the Arm The Teachers program and yearly registration fee on gun owners to cover continued operation. Why should Americans who don’t own guns be forced to pay for the carnage caused by gun owners?

Authoritarianism is on the rise around the world. And Timothy Snyder
wants to push back against this tide. A history professor at Yale
University who’s written widely on Europe and the Holocaust, takes an
unusual approach in his little book, On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century.

          • another_steve

“I can’t get turned on by mean people.”

Based on the responses I get to some of my more obscene JMG comments, most people here share that view with you.

My brain and my libido totally differentiate between love/admiration/affection and sexual desire. It’s always lovely when all those things are present at the same time with the same two or more persons – but for me, totally unnecessary. Not required. Not the way my brain or sex drive operates.

The “requirement” that we like/love/respect the objects of our sexual desire is purely a creation of institutional religion. A creation designed to help ensure that there are two emotionally bonded parents to care for their offspring, thereby helping to ensure the survival and thriving of the offspring. Many of religion’s “rules” are designed to encourage desirable biological evolutionary behavioral traits. Purely from a survival and thriving perspective.

All of the above, in my opinion only.

            Many many folks believe/feel otherwise.

          • Cattleya1

When I see the face of a psychopath, I just want to run the other way. My ‘flight or fight’ reflex takes precedence over my sex drive. Miller, Cohn, Twitler – all vaguely attractive in their younger days, but I wouldn’t be alone in an elevator with any of them.

I felt the same way when this first started but have been heartened. For instance how some have responded to the news of the deputy not entering the building.

There’s this wonderfully intuitive sense running throughout Philosophical Daoism re “the soft overcoming the hard.” The gentle overcoming the rough. Fellow Philosophical Daoists and Philosophical Buddhists reading here will understand.

It’s the root of much of traditional Eastern martial art.

The soft. The gentle. The introspective. Overcoming the rough and the brutish.

      • Cuberly Deux

        It’s the water analogy.

“Water is fluid, soft, and yielding. But water will wear away rock, which is rigid and cannot yield. As a rule, whatever is fluid, soft, and yielding will overcome whatever is rigid and hard. This is another paradox: what is soft is strong.”

        • another_steve

Lovely. Thanks. Water is a common metaphor in Philosophical Daoism. The underlying principle is apparent to anyone who walks in the woods and observes. Simply observes.

          No violence there. Nothing brutish.

As with other historical tyrant wannabes, he twists the language to suit his own ends.

I still think he’s slowly losing his mind, and that the true character of that damned fraud is being exposed for all to see. I’d rather look at his naked statue again…

I heard a cable news commentator (can’t recall which one; I listen to so many of them) remark today that after Trump’s CPAC address, his family should seriously consider having him committed.

I swear, that’s what this commentator said.

        • Karl Dubhe

Traditionally, families kept their demented seniors from public view.

One reason I hope to die young, funny thing is that that number goes ten years higher every five years.

Losing? That ship has sailed, crashed on the rocks and sunk.

Shocking, isn’t it—how the very Rethugs who released the memo, have rebuttals ready to go at the same time?

  • So, a judge ruled against him and said he had to pay out $5.77 million. Wouldn’t that normally be the end of it? If a judge rules against me can I just negotiate a lower amount at that point?

I didn’t know you could settle *after* a judge orders you to do something?

    • Rob NYNY

The defendants can threaten to appeal, dragging the process out, thereby gaining a little bit of bargaining power. By settling, the plaintiffs lose a few percentage points, but they should get their money sooner.

That’s like the Joker boasting he’s the most popular villain in Arkham.

It was taken , oh never mind, The king of Sam Handwiches beat me to it 🙂

At least the 21st century totalitarian is a bit more honest than the fuckers in the 20th century were. Those fuckers claimed 99% support, or more.

    • TampaDink

If only he had a majority control of Congress. /sarcasm.

If only he could have worked a “Crooked Hillary” into this one, it would have it all.

God, he’s trying to have it both ways. There was nothing going on regarding Russia but Obama’s to blame for it.

    • BobSF_94117

I probably shouldn’t ask, but why is Fox News making a claim about compromising information? Where does that come from?

      • Sam_Handwich

i guess it’s a reference to the Steele dossier

        • BobSF_94117

Yes, but who (besides Fox News) says the Russians had no compromising info? (Ignoring how ill-advised it is to claim “never’ or “none”.)

    • Sam_Handwich

      Obama enacted sanctions

      Your move, Dotard

I haven’t made $5.5 million in my entire 62 years of living, breathing and teaching younger people how to be human. I’ve also never played a round of golf. But now this chiseler has to pay off people who trusted him for that amount? Good fucking god. It’s a travesty.

  • kareemachan

They *agreed* to pay. They haven’t actually done it yet.

was mueller a party to the suers i wonder? trump has asserted that a dispute over club fees is one reason mueller is biased.

  • Charles Nelson

Our Glorious Leader will just ask his MAGA followers to contribute to his 2020 campaign. The money will go through several offshore accounts and then to settle the lawsuit. Trump would never use his own money!

    • David Gervais

It’s not his own money he was sued for, it was the member’s unreturned deposits.
I doubt that he is still holding it in trust for them though.

RE: “Reuters reports: A Florida golf club owned by U.S. President Donald
Trump agreed on Friday to pay $5.45 million to settle claims by former
members that it wrongfully refused to refund their deposits when they
    wanted to resign.”

Next time Trump loses a game of golf, he will say one of his clubs was crooked.
