Mattis Likely To Support Transgender Military Service

The Washington Post reports:

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is expected to propose to President Trump that transgender members of the U.S. military be allowed to continue serving despite the president’s call last summer for a ban on all transgender service members, according to two U.S. officials with knowledge of the issue.

The defense secretary was scheduled to brief the president Wednesday, but the meeting was postponed and will occur soon, officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss policy deliberations. Dana White, a spokeswoman for Mattis, said the secretary will provide his recommendation to Trump this week and the president will make an announcement at some point afterward.

Officials at the White House and Pentagon declined to comment on the recommendations until Mattis delivers his plan. “This is a complex issue, and the secretary is taking his time to consider the information he’s been given,” White told reporters Thursday. “It’s an important issue, and again, he sees all of his decisions through the lens of lethality.”

When even the military is for this… Actually, they weren’t always, but once Obama forced them to accept transgendered, and nothing bad happened as a result, and after all the money the military sunk into training them, I’d say that Mattis realizes that bigotry costs money, more than any “ick” factor.

  • Tulle Christensen

“This is a complex issue”, no it is not, it is very simple, you have someone who is doing a good job you do not fire them

    • lymis

And – unlike the Trump Administration – you screen and train your candidates before you put them in the job in the first place.

O/T: Donald speaks at CPAC at 10:50. He’ll then pal around with the Australian PM for a bit before having a 3PM with Rex.

    • Treant

Three things to do? And only one of them social? Long day for the putz.

      • Tulle Christensen

The worse part is no Golf today, I hope he can get a quick 18 tomorrow or he end up in a bad mood

  • greenmanTN

I think the military just knows they have better things to do than trying to oust serving members for reasons unrelated to their job.

    • safari

This is the same military that is being pushed by the manchild to throw him a parade.

      • greenmanTN

Talk about a waste of time, money, and effort.

  • billbear1961

    The lens of lethality, huh?

    • Wisterley

      The have the best euphemisms.

      • billbear1961

        It’s just plain bizarre.

  • Harveyrabbit

They’ve postponed the meeting until his new Gaddafi uniform gets back from the cleaners.

  • Rebecca Gardner

This is not a complex issue in any way, shape, or form.

Way off topic, but found this tweet where this idiot wants to see all schools closed rather than doing something about guns.

    • Tulle Christensen

      1) Schools are not really a national US government thing they are locally run
      2) Only the Supreme Court could say they are not in the Bill of Rights, because you know the 9th amendment (the amendment Republicans want us to forget about)

I had someone translate it, fascinating….

I know a better way to protect my kids than having my home be an armed camp.

Voting for sane gun laws. Voting for social justice. Voting for an inclusive economy. Voting for a social safety net. Voting for health care for all, including mental health care. Do whatever I can, with my vote and with my voice and with my money, to have a sane and reasonable society.

  • Bambino

There is only one game play by this admin and the GOP. Divisiveness. Doesn’t matter what department in the government. Transgender in military is yet another non issue to cause divisiveness and chaos in the military. By design -Russia meddling and scamvangelical agenda or just incompetence – GOP has remained the voice of oppositions for far too long to know how to govern, saying no to everything where they and their donors have no monetary benefit.

    • fuow

Yup. They can do this because our side doesn’t vote.

  • lymis

When I was in the Navy, one of my neighbors got into an argument with me about why women didn’t belong in the military. He pointed to my sister and said something along the lines of “Do you honestly think that she’d be able to fight in combat, and would you want her to?”

I said that no, I didn’t, but also that she didn’t want to be in the military and wasn’t asking to serve. And that yes, there were women in my class that I absolutely thought could be in combat. That also led to a discussion of all the many roles in the military that don’t involve the expectation of combat but are still mission-critical, and the fact that there are one hell of a lot of men I wouldn’t trust in the military.

This whole “debate” echoes that for me. Nobody that I’ve ever seen is arguing that all transgender people should be rounded up and drafted. We’re not talking about all transgender people. We’re talking about the transgender people who want to serve and who are qualified to be trained to do so.

    • KnownDonorDad

We’re talking about the transgender people who want to serve and who are qualified to be trained to do so.

That’s exactly it, but we’re dealing with social regressives who still can’t quite believe they lost the Obergefell case and, in a large part, the country has moved on; they desperately need another “other” to target.

      • prixator

Until military service became an issue again, the regressives had retreated to the bathrooms.

    • Bambino

No teenager out of high school can fight in the war. Yet millions have come and gone because a country leaders decide they can. Any talk who can and cannot become moot after that.

    • fuow

There you go again, applying logic and sound reasoning to make valid arguments.
      Just like a woman.*
*This being the Internet, my very first post here and some humourless idiot just waiting to pounce, I’d better add that this was a major complement. (*Sigh*)

    • Strepsi

Show your neighbour this 12 minute documentary – I guarantee he could not tell this dude was born female, nor question his ability to serve. I also guarantee that this Logan Ireland could beat the shit out of your neighbour or any other bigot.

      • ArchiLaw

Even for those of us who are fully on board, this is worthwhile watching. Thanks, Strepsi.

  • Wisterley

What do they think on Fox and Friends? That’s the opinion that counts.

    • lymis

Maybe you should ask “What do they say on Fox and Friends?.

I think expecting them to think is asking too much of the poor dears.

  • Jefe5084

Well, Mr. Mattis has sealed his fate. He’s probably soon to depart. The Orange POS will not approve.

  • EdA

The lawsuits certainly are not going to disappear should Mattis decide to support President Bonespurs, and every day that passes provides further documentation that Benedict Trump’s pronouncement is based on his and Pence’s irrational bias.

  • Don’t kid yourself. Mattis is a conservative, loud-mouthed, misogynistic asshole from the “old boys club”, known for being such even amongst the military.

    • marshlc

Someone doesn’t have be perfect, or even good, in order to be an ally on a narrow front. Assholes can be useful allies as long as we remember that they are assholes and keep our eyes open and our wits about us.

      • Don’t kid yourself. It’s not about perfection. He never WAS an ally.

        • marshlc

What I mean is, he can be useful in working toward something we also want to work toward, even if his reasons are different than ours. It’s possible to work with someone you detest on one aspect of your fight, even if you are fighting against them on every other aspect. Maybe the word I want is something like “useful tool” rather than “ally”, if by ally we mean friend.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

    So he’ll be gone soon.

  • fuow

    Wow, elections have consequences.
    Who knew?
