Evangelist Billy Graham Dies At Age 99

The Huffington Post reports:

Billy Graham, the famed televangelist who became known as “America’s Pastor,” has died at the age of 99, MSNBC and CBS reported.  Born in 1918 in Charlotte, North Carolina, William Franklin Graham Jr. was the oldest of the four children of William and Morrow Graham. He was raised on a dairy farm, and little in his childhood suggested he would become a world-renowned preacher.

Graham viewed the Bible as the infallible word of God. He believed that Jesus led a sinless life and that all men were lost and would face God’s judgment. Most importantly, he was convinced he must use “every modern means of communication available” to spread the Gospel throughout the world, and did so in print, on radio and television, online and in person.

Also from the Huffington Post:

In 1974, when a young woman wrote to the famous evangelist about her sexual love for another woman, Graham immediately replied with a hellish threat: Homosexual perverts, with their “ungodly spirit of self-gratification,” will not inherit the kingdom of heaven.

“[L]et me say this loud and clear!” he added. “We traffic in homosexuality at the peril of our spiritual welfare.” (That position was no surprise to Graham’s minions: Several years earlier he had described homosexuality as “a sinister form of perversion” contributing to the decay of civilization.)

Graham’s God clearly took no pleasure in lesbianism, even one marked by love. “Your affection for another of your own sex is misdirected, and will be judged by God’s holy standards,” he admonished the young woman.

  • olandp

He preached the Gospel and became a multi millionaire, just like Jesus.

    • TampaZeke

If Jesus had been more like today’s Christians he wouldn’t have healed poor people, would have taken the life savings of others before healing them, would have denied healthcare entirely to the centurion’s dead boy lover based on deeply held religious beliefs, would have told the sinners casting stones that what they really needed was more and bigger stones, would have thrown the woman IN the well, would have given the merchants and thieves full control of the temple, would have turned the feeding of the five thousand into a political fundraiser, would have organized rallies to pass laws to make life harder for the disadvantaged and oppressed, would have actually said, “love the sinner, hate the sin”, would have convinced the people of Palestine that the answer to all of their problems was electing more Romans and would have cancelled the sermon on the mount for fear of a backlash from his base.

      • Frostbite

Nah. Today’s Christians would have shot him for not being white.

        • TampaZeke

I said that if Jesus had been like today’s Christians, not if Christians had lived in the day of the alleged “Jesus”.

        • Snarkaholic

          …and for wearing a dress.

          • Judas Peckerwood

And for hanging out with dudes all the time and not getting straight married.

        • 2patricius2

Reminds me of the story of the Grand Inquisitor, in Dostoevsky’s novel, Brothers Karamazov. Christ comes back at the height of the Inquisition and is arrested and thrown into a dungeon, and questioned by the Grand Inquisitor. In the end, the inquisitor banishes Christ into the streets with the command to never come back.

In his own day he was condemned by religious authorities and civil authorities and executed. Not so different from today. Billy and his son Franklin gained fame and wealth, and peppered their preaching with condemnation of people they didn’t like. Now Billy is dead. And what is he taking with him into the grave? And what of the people he trampled with his preaching? And what of the people his son condemns with his preaching, and the hate and division he sows, and the corruption he carries around in his soul?

Whatever one may think of the historicity of the person of Jesus, the early books describing him describe a man who identified with the sick, the poor, the outcasts of his day. That’s a far cry from the people like the Grahams.

        • MonochromeMouse

They would have called him Jihadi Jesus, insisted he was a secret Muslim, and demanded trump predator drone his family.

      • killreligion

The people that made up the story of Jesus did all those things and worse. Comparing modern christians to an ideal that never existed and is just the story used for brainwashing is done often here but is misdirected

        • TampaZeke

Oh, don’t get me wrong. I believe that Jesus is a wholly fictional character who never said or did any of the things attributed to him, but my comment still holds. If they were writing the character based upon his followers they would have written an entirely different script.

          • killreligion

I understand. I just want to keep spreading the truth that this idea religion makes people do good things or religious leaders are good is a lie. The original intent of religion is to control by fear for gain (power, money)

I also want people that think it’s ok to support “good” religion to wake up and be enlightened

The fact you have to qualify it with “good” or “affirming” or “accepting ” should be the clue that it’s not a good thing. The RCC has to protect children while going out of business would eliminate that need

Episcopalians are doing harm by supporting a brand of the cult that only serves to make some of religion palatable, nice hats and all. They are pawns.

Do the community stuff without helping the evil have PR cover.

          • TampaZeke

We must have been separated at birth. I couldn’t agree with you more. I was a member of one of those “good, affirming” UCC churches until I came to the same realization as you. I was still supporting the overall cult, which was odd since I was an atheist and they knew it. A lot of the members of that church were atheists who appreciated the social justice activism of the church. We’ve all moved on, realizing that we don’t have to be members of a church to be justice activists.

  • Gustav2

He was the one who taught all the other evangelists how to make big bucks.

His national stadium shows only made money for his group. He would send ‘salesmen’ to go door to door to each church to get the local churches to pay all the costs, promising more butts in the pews, then he would take the whole offering home with him. Paper fried chicken buckets full of cash. Those few folks who started going to church after a crusade rarely continued the habit after 6 months.

The real reason the stadium shows stopped is local churches got wise to the scam.

    • It goes back further than Graham, but Billy Boy was one of the first to make full use of the media to make himself richer.

The fools who follow these super-rich evangelicals (such as Joel Osteen, among many others) should pause, take a deep breath, and take a look at the lavish materialistic lifestyles of these scam artists. Then consider just how base this “prosperity gospel” bullshit really is. And for God’s sake, quit flinging money at those grinning charlatans (Osteen, especially).

How about the table flipping and violent denunciations? Jesus and Trump were/are big on those. And both are on record as hanging out with prostitutes, although Jesus doesn’t seem to have been as generous with hush money/compensation as Trump.
Also Trump never, so far as we know, said “Woman, what have I to do with thee?” to his own mother, unlike Jesus.
And I’m still waiting for Jesus to refer to Millennials as “Ye generation of vipers”, although he’s undoubtedly thought it.

      • marshlc

Someone as evil and crazy as Nixon, and as smart as Nixon, in 2018, when the standards that politicians are held to have been lowered so far? No, I don’t think so. When I was listening to Slow Burn, I kept thinking about how dangerous Nixon would be if he were around now, with the modern Republican party. Back then, there was such a thing as a moderate conservative, and an ethical conservative. Now, not so much.

        • Harley

Nixon created the EPA. He would be Democratic today. Along with Lincoln.

          • marshlc

Nixon was an amoral paranoid. He’d feel right at home in the modern Republican party. The good things he did were due to the times he lived in, when even a terrible president was expected to care about the state of the nation to some extent.

          • motordog

Nixon passed some extremely important environmental legislation, including the Clean Air Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the Safe Drinking Water Act. Of course, he had to…the Cuyahoga river in Cleveland was literally on fire at one point, there was so much industrial waste dumped into it. He was still a crooked asshole.

      • McSwagg

Lt. Gov. Patrick has been running lie filled ads in the Houston market. He claims ‘Liberals’ are against reducing the skyrocketing property taxes and only he can solve the problem. (Where have I heard that promise before?)

        • William

Those commercials have been playing the Austin market non-stop.

One easy step to reduce property taxes, abolish half the school districts in the state. Make them do shotgun weddings. Texas has 254 counties and more than 1200 school districts. Each district has their own administration, taxing authority, superintendent, etcetera, ad nauseum.

          • McSwagg

I know. I pay a property tax to my local school district every year here in NW Houston. That tax increases far more than inflation every year due to soaring ‘property values’ that bear no relationship to actual values.

          • William

The value of our house went up by $55,000 last year. During the appeal, the guy said it was based on what Californians are paying for similar properties in the county. They rejected our appeal.

          • McSwagg

Same thing happening here in Houston. Texas’ claim to be a “low tax” state is a blatant lie.

          • William

The Californians has one especially annoying habit. Texas law does not require the buyer to tell the county what they paid for the house. If you pay less than the appraised value, you can tell the purchase price and have the appraised value lowered for at least one tax year.

The Californians are disclosing purchase price, even when they pay above the appraised value. In some cases, they pay much higher. It causes all property appraisals to go up in the area.

          • McSwagg

My home value has soared by over 20% in the three years since I bought it. And I bought in a modest, mixed ethnicity neighborhood that’s certainly not a preferred choice for the Californian immigrants.

That’s interesting logic… so anyone who is directly and personally impacted by an issue is automatically disqualified from expressing their opinion about that issue..!?!?

      • Mark Cross

…by that logic, O’Reilly has no right to defend himself from any additional accusations of sexual misconduct.

    • Nychta

My question is: should the media be promoting opinions by the Trump regime, who are in an emotional state and facing extreme peer pressure in some cases?

    • Judas Peckerwood

Gee Bill, shouldn’t be out sexually harassing some woman and setting her up for life with a multimillion-dollar settlement?

  • Dreaming Vertebrate

Reminder: Graham was also a “devout” anti-semite
His reputation was tarnished in 2002 when previously secret White House tape recordings revealed Graham and Nixon in an anti-Semitic conversation. In the 1972 discussion, Graham said Jews had a “stranglehold” on the media and that if Nixon were re-elected, the two “might be able to do something.”

And, lo, Billy Graham begat a multitude of copycats, and taught them to grift. “Go forth and con, my children. The Lord is a bountiful provider for those who use his name for profit.”

And the land was ripe with preachers. There came Jimmy Swaggert and Jim Bakker. There was Kenneth Copeland and Paul Crouch. Soon came Joel Osteen and Rick Warren and countless others.

Billy Graham was the leading proponent of Evangelical Christianity, which resisted the end of segregation, resisted the women’s movement, and is the leading proponent of mistreating LGBT people to this very day, and brought about the rise of the Christian right (and evil men like James Dobson, Tony Perkins, and the two Jerry Falwells). Sorry, but the passing of an old bigot doesn’t make me sad. And don’t get me started on that fucking evil son of his.

I understand the negative reactions here, but I think a few other things must be said of this man. Billy Graham, unlike his son, Franklin, was a Democrat. His organization had known homosexuals working in it and he took no steps to fire them. What he wrote in 1974 on the subject was, most likely, not the same thing he was thinking 30 years later. He was never an evangelist — tele- or otherwise — of the same smarmy, money-grabbing mold as Joel Osteen or Benny Hinn.

I secretly admired him when he raised the ire of my Baptist parents by praising the work of MLK from the pulpit. He removed the “Colored Only” ribbons from the Memorial Auditorium when he preached in Chattanooga, my hometown, in the late 50s. We should not smear him with the same brush as we would happily (and deservedly) smear Franklin. He was not the same kind of man.

    • bzrd

glad you find good in the greatest grifter of all
Christine Craft did an investigative piece on him years ago and found that he weaseled old people out of their money and property. He had no compunction of putting the screws to them. I’ve posted this before. When arriving in charlotte you used to drive on Billy Graham Parkway (thankfully a new entrance road has replaced that route which didn’t connect well to the highways)

I told an employee after arriving once that charlottes must be ashamed of forcing visitors to drive on such a named road, I wonder if a town or county has done this. She replied that he SAVED HER LIFE. She explained she wouldn’t have a personal relationship with Jesus without him

Not wanting to get fired I respected my employees batshit crazy and changed the subject but wanted to reply it’s not Jesus, she’s talking to herself and needs to see a doctor

  • R W C

… not a moment too soon,

Billy Graham: As our lord Jeebus said, “Show me the money!”

  • Graham believed that the bible is the infallible word of God, which really takes quite an enormous amount of faith! I mean you have to totally ignore the obvious. Like thousands of impossible biblical contradictions, such as the fact that the bible starts with Genesis which gives two conflicting versions of creation, and ends up with Jesus rising into the heavens from two completely different locations. Not to mention that Jesus promised that the end of the world would occur during the lifetime of his own generation.

But can you imagine Graham’s surprise upon his death at discovering that there is no afterlife, and his entire life was based on bullshit?! Except, well, he couldn’t be surprised, because there was no afterlife for him to be surprised in. Damn! That’s always the catch with these self-righteous preachers. They never find out that they were full of shit!

    • cleos_mom

There’s also that inconvenient fact that in Jesus’ time, people had a concept of a tightly closed universe with heaven just a little bit above the clouds. Today, as I believe Spong said, we know that if Jesus had just kept rising above the Earth he’d be in orbit.

      • And some believe his mom is up there with him. I wonder what protects them from the cold and lack of atmosphere. Not to mention radiation!
