Dallas Official To NRA: Move Your Convention

Houston’s ABC affiliate reports:

A leader in Dallas politics does not want the National Rifle Association to meet in his city. Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway is urging the NRA to find a new home for its annual convention. He says the meeting is not appropriate in Dallas in the wake of last week’s school shooting in Florida.

It is a tough call when you ask the NRA to reconsider coming to Dallas. But it is putting all citizens first and getting them to come to the table and elected officials to come to the table, and to address this madness now,” Caraway said.

The convention is scheduled for the first week of May.

Oh, you were just in a car accident and you need extensive medical attention and months of follow-up physical therapy? I bet your gun can help you!!

What’s that? You just discovered that your child / spouse has cancer? I think you should consult your gun.

Aaah, you’re approaching retirement and wondering how you’ll pay your property taxes or buy enough food to eat this month? Go ask your gun. I’m sure it will provide for you.

      • JackFknTwist

And with your gun we send thoughts and prayers.

With all that on board you’ll do just fine.
        have a nice day.

    • Bryan

Oh and your garden hose is a snake so watch out for that too

    • Gerry Fisher

I remember the day after the election having a discussion on Facebook about how, given that Republicans had both houses of Congress and the presidency, they could threaten the social safety net, including social security. A seemingly moderate conservative said that Trump would never do that, he PROMISED not to do that. The naivete…astounding. And she was a very bright, accomplished professional (who clearly wasn’t up to speed on politics). Paul Ryan’s been chomping on the bit to kill social security since he was in high school and college.

      • Nowhereman

Yeah, Trump promised and the idiots believed him. It’s comforting to know that Trump supporters will be hard hit when the safety net is ravaged to pay for tax cuts for the filthy rich. It’s just too bad that so many of us will suffer too.

  • Gustav2

I do have First Amendment problem with this, he is part of government. And it is too late to change anything to do with the convention.

    • Todd20036

Then you are missing the point of the first amendment. He’s not shutting down the NRA. He’s not ending the convention. All he’s doing is saying not in his city.

The NRA can have it elsewhere – preferably in some Podunk shithole where they love guns more than they love children

      • JackFknTwist

Or in an non aligned country – the Arctic.

    • Joseph Miceli

I don’t. The NRA passed free speech issues long ago. Now it is a terrorist organization fomenting discord and buying politicians.

      • Todd20036

        That too.

      • JackFknTwist

    • Butch

The first amendment applies to the federal government and says that under most circumstances the government can’t arrest you for what you say. It does not say that people are required to give you a venue for your speech.
First Amendment was the subject of my master’s thesis.

      • Kruhn

Plus there’s probably a Convention Bureau who decides on these matters independent of the mayor.

      • Nowhereman

That’s why I don’t get how colleges and universities think that they have to host hate mongers and terrorists on their campuses. It costs them a lot of money for security and invites violence against their students.

    • Nelson Kerr

Since he is asking not ordering there is no first amendment issue, he just wants to lower the level of human sewage that comes to his city.

      • Gil

Also too the demonstrations…Can you blame him…

    • SoCalGal20

Disagree. He can state his opinion.

Will it matter? I don’t know. What venue has the NRA booked for the convention? Is it city owned? Is it private? Conventions sign contracts. I assume there is a cancellation clause on both sides for a variety of reasons. It is possible their convention could be canceled by the venue for some reason, though at this point unlikely unless it’s a city-owned venue and they have a good reason to justify it.

      • Gustav2

Name a convention center built in the last 40 years without tax money. They are few.

      • Nowhereman

Speaking of venues, no doubt the NRA rented a gun free venue so they can use that as an excuse for not allowing guns in. I say walk what they talk. These are the creeps who want grade school teachers to be armed.

    • PeterC

It is Never too LATE ;to encourage them to stay away.

      • Nowhereman

And if they still come, protest the hell out of them. They always put these things on in gun free venues so they will not have their penis substitutes on them.

    • Hue-Man

How is that any different than Republicans telling people to go somewhere else if they want an abortion or they are turned away at a gay-hating baker/florist/B&B?

“Free Speech for me but not for thee.”

      • canoebum

The NRA provides material and financial support for terrorists. They should be chased out of any city. Let them hold their convention on some wacko libertarian’s ranch in the middle of Tornado Alley. They can rent tents.

    • Nowhereman

Hate speech is not free speech.

      • Gustav2

        Legally, it is.

  • Boreal

    Totally OT:
The botany in Obama’s official portrait represents his history

    • JackFknTwist

That was an interesting article on the meaning of the flowers in the portrait. Thanks.

    • Nowhereman

The “Sperm crawling in his hair!” thing that the right wingers are pushing is really really too much. Where do they get this stuff! (Rhetorical)

  • Rex

Here’s hoping that eventually any association with the NRA will be poison.

    • narutomania

That’s the way to do it. Kick ’em where it hurts: in the wallet.

      • Frostbite

But considering how much money Russia gave them, will this make a dent in their coffers?

        • Nowhereman

I’m hoping that Mueller takes them down, too. That would be one of the most wonderful things ever. I’d mark it on my calendar as a holiday–the day the NRA died. Most of that money ended up in the campaign coffers of republicans in congress so it is possible.

    • Nowhereman

      I’ll second that hope.

  • Todd20036

Dallas is a blue oasis in a red shithole state.

That being said, it takes guts to turn down money for principle.

  • Anastasia Beaverhousen

I hear there are some nice shitholes overseas that are looking for some convention dollars.

    • JackFknTwist

Don’t even think of sending that bunch of traitors (laundering Russian money) and bribers (the GOP criminals who took bribes) any where near Europe.

      We have higher standards.

    • Nowhereman

Somalia is nice this time of year–lots of guns and no government to speak of.

  • Dot Beech

Dallas. The last city in America that should host the NRA. Opening ceremonies on the grassy knoll?

    • Hue-Man

      Sponsored by the Cruz family.

      • Nowhereman

Ted Cruz is Number One with a Bullet on the NRA’s donation list. I think Little Marco is Number Two.

  • Gerry Fisher

On the one hand, I love the push back. On the other hand, where were you a year or two ago when this convention got scheduled?

  • unsavedheathen

A little history on a similar situation…In 2015, under pressure from Kay Bailey Hutchinson and Park Cities’ prudes, our mayor, Mike Rawlings, and several councilmen banded together to deny use of the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center to Exxxotica, an alternative lifestyle expo that had already been held at the center in years past(before it bore Hutchinson’s name). The city had to defend itself in a lawsuit. They looked like fools. But they kept the dildo show from upsetting the already consterpated Hutchinson.

I don’t know where this effort to deny the NRA use of a municipal convention hall is going, but in Dallas I bet the answer is nowhere. There aren’t many objections to the NRA among the local ruling elite.

And Dwayne Caraway is using this very cynically. I don’t believe another anti-gun word has ever publicly passed his lips.

    • wds

Um … he didn’t deny them the convention, he asked them to move it somewhere else … cynical? So what if he hasn’t (which I doubt you have any proof of) uttered the magic words. he’s now asking a major convention to move … sounds pretty good to me …

      • unsavedheathen

As I wrote above, the call by Mayor Pro Tem Caraway is to deny the NRA use of a municipal convention facility not the right to hold the convention. And I related a story about a successful movement two years ago to deny use of the same facility to a sex show. Both efforts, to me, seem unconstitutional.

  • Nowhereman

    Good! More please!

  • sadoldguy

I thought republicans liked the idea of refusing services based on deeply held beliefs.

  • R W C

Dallas will be very supportive of anti-NRA student protests. Come on down, y’all!

  • Nic Peterson

Wow, just wow! Every now and then, a TX leader will surprise me. Well done, sir!

  • netxtown

Saw this last night on the local news. it will have zero impact on the convention, save a protest or two. Dallas, in and of itself, may be blue – but its just a dot in a sea of red.

  • ‘Til Tuesday

Well, they could hold it in Russia now that they’re all “buddy-buddy” with them.
