John Oliver Hails Parkland Survivors [VIDEO]

The Independent reports:

John Oliver‘s return to screens with the new season of Last Week Tonight began on a sombre note, addressing the “heartbreaking events” that took place in Parkland, Florida, last Wednesday.  “These events are now so familiar,” Oliver commented. “We basically automatically know how each side will play out.”

“But this time felt slightly different,” he continued. “Because when the ‘now’s not the time’ argument came out, the kids from that school said, ‘You know what? Yes it fucking is.’” Survivors of the shooting have already announced that they will lead a nationwide demonstration to demand action on gun control.

  • Acronym Jim

Yes, it fucking is indeed. Post-mass shooting has always been the time to discuss how to end them.

And good morning, Joe. I trust you had a nice Sunday night.

    • Silver Badger

Especially since we are now in the pre-mass shooting stage, while we await the next one.

      • Acronym Jim

        In an alternate universe:

“Mr. President, the Japanese have bombed Pearl Harbor. We think there may be over 2,000 casualties.”

“All ask Congress to authorize war immediately.”

Congress: “This isn’t the time to discuss going to war. We don’t want to politicize this tragedy.”

        • Bad Tom

The US people would have had torches and pitchforks outside the Congress within hours.

          WITHOUT the internet. Just radio.

  • Ninja0980

    The kids are alright.

    • DaddyRay

I am so proud of these kids.

  • another_steve

One good thing that could come out of the Florida horror would be the mobilization of younger voters come November.

If we truly want change, we must kick the Republicans out of Congress.

    • Ninja0980

      And the State Houses.

  • Harveyrabbit

    Yes it fucking is.

I’d like to see that as a Dem bumper sticker for the November elections.

  • Bambino

The adult has been oblivious to the need of the kids for far too long.It has come to the point the young ones voice their fear and anger and get our attention. We fuck up the world so bad in the name of providing for our children. We created a hostile and violent environment to be inherited by them. Money can’t buy safety nor clean air. Time is up!

  • DaddyRay

What is really sick and twisted about America is just like prior mass shootings we will probably see a spike in gun sales with the NRA pushing the “They are going to take your guns away, buy now” BS

    • Acronym Jim

Maybe, except this time the kids are specifically calling out the NRA and recipients of their campaign donations.

      • DaddyRay

Oh and I love that – they are not letting the NRA get away with their typical rhetoric

      • JackFknTwist

NRA are getting away with bribing politicians.

NRA are getting away with laundering 30 million of Russian money to the Trump/turd campaign.

        • Acronym Jim

So far. It is my hope that Mueller will be able to keep Trump’s campaign promise to drain the swamp.

    • SoCalGal20

Anytime gun nuts feel the 2nd Amendment is threatened, off they run to buy more guns. 3% of the population owns 50% of the guns. Which pretty much tells you what you need to know.

    • JCF

No, I’m sure that’s probably happening again (though hopefully, a spike from a smaller number of buys).

  • JackFknTwist

The new generations are determining what is right, what should have been determined long ago:
-The second amendment must take a back seat to the right to life.

When the multiplicity of assault weapons infringes the safety of the people and school children in their classrooms, then it is time to state that the Constitutional Right to Life, to living a safe life is superior to all other rights.

There has been enough bleeting about the right to life in the context of abortion, where is the same enthusiasm for the right to life of school kids ?

Yeah, we know what has happened; the politicians have been bribed.
The politicians have reneged on what they were elected to do.
Shame on them; now let’s get rid of the lot of them…..they’re criminals who took bribes from the criminal NRA.

  • Blackfork

As Emma González, a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School said, “We are protecting guns more than people.” Spot on.

  • GayOldLady

“And the Children shall lead”. Who knew it would be Children who would restore my faith in humanity?

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

Starting to feel a bit guilty about my cooking habits now.

      ( lol not really )

    • SoCalGal20
    • pgarayt

They’re the only ones who can.

  • Joe in PA

We had this discussion just last night…this time it “feels different”. Doing what I can to educate my gun-toting neighbors. One is a woman that runs (jogs) with a gun. Srsly.

    • JCF

Things could have been different after Pulse…but there were so many other issues there, besides guns. Since then, a country music concert, a Texas (Fundy) church? Yeah, not likely a lot of anti-gun people there. But teenagers in metropolitan SOUTH Florida? [The part w/ lots of brown people, and white kids who are their close friends] Now THAT is a group that’s not going to kowtow to the Gun Cult!

  • CanuckDon

Finding that segment of the Andy Griffith show was brilliant! These asswipe losers of the Rght using their distorted ideas of the past just got majorly sideswiped.

  • Kevin Andrews

What does this Government care about We The People?
It is clear that the only concern of this Government is: How much the “elected” officials can extort from the Fascist Corporate Super-person to do their bidding.
The NRA is a terrorist organization without any value in the USA.
AIPAC is an unregistered foreign lobby and each and every Congress person and Senator who signed the AIPAC Pledge a traitor.
The military is a prosperity vacuum on Main Street acting only on behalf of the Oil Barons and Israeli land and resource thieves.
The sad reality is that the purchased Meat-Puppets in Washington, District of Corruption, will not do anything to stop the Carnage because of their contempt of Constitution and We The People.

  • Jerry Kott

Lets hope we turned a corner. However, when we stand back and look, turning corner after corner is beginning to look like we are going in circles. There is a link in this madness that need to be broken.

    • Bad Tom

Link that needs to be broken: Russian dark money.

  • JackFknTwist

Popular opinion and force is strongly in favour of gun control.
We must focus on the criminal activities of the NRA.
    These include:
    -bribery of politicians……..
    -subverting the electoral process.
-Breach of the Electoral Acts prohibiting foreign money.

There is no doubt now that for all their ‘lobbying’ , a euphemism for bribery, the NRA are a subversive organization.

Let’s ban all assault weapons, automatic and semi automatics, and ban the NRA for its criminal subversion.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

    LOL. Gay bless you John.

  • leastyebejudged

What difference is any of it going to make ?

It’s business as usual today with gun ads on local TV.

    • Bj Lincoln

That is when we should call and complain to the station about the way they are helping the gun industry and putting the pain, sorrow and fear of mass shootings away. We must call out everyone and every business who support normalizing these shootings.

    • The_Wretched

Thanks for the comment, “give up.”

      • leastyebejudged

        Kill yourself, idiot.

  • TuuxKabin

    RecommendOH! 💓💓💓”s, you know where.

  • Tulle Christensen

The reason it is never the right time to talk is because they cannot come up with any good reason not not ban assault rifles

which was done in the past and has already cleared the courts

    • Bad Tom

And the previous ban was working!

  • Jerry Kott

This won’t end until the gun owners pay high liability insurance and are required to show a valid policy before they put their finger on the trigger. Car insurance is based on the propensity to be in an accident and risk. These assault weapons and many guns on their own are tools to commit harm.

    • JackFknTwist

Great idea……..I’d love to see that.

      • Jerry Kott

Why not, it make perfect sense. The cost is linked to the risk. Logic has to play a role in this madness. We need reasons not excuses. But then again, there are millions to be made by having us sitting on the edge of our seats.

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

This needs to be framed like this: What do you love more: your steel fetish objects or your children?

  • SoCalGal20

The long segment about Trump is also must-watch.

    • Bad Tom

It was an excellent show from beginning to end.

    • The_Wretched

Wow, missed having him on air.

  • Bad Tom

    “We call BS!”

Succinct and spot on! You go, kids!

  • Mrs. Norman Maine

The generation of children that were in lower elementary at the time of Sandy Hook are now in high school. They have spent their entire politically aware lives knowing that congress could care less if they’re shot at school. They will be entering adulthood shortly and they are pissed.
