Florida Shooter Spewed Racist, Anti-Gay, Anti-Semitic Views In Private Chat Group, Called For Murdering Gays

CNN reports:

In a private Instagram group chat, confessed school shooter Nikolas Cruz repeatedly espoused racist, homophobic and anti-Semitic views and displayed an obsession with violence and guns.  CNN, investigating comments the shooter may have left on a now-deleted YouTube channel, was added to the private Instagram group by one of the active members in it. The responding group members, who appear to be younger than 18, have refused to confirm their identities to CNN on or off the record.

Racism was a constant theme in the chat group, which was called “Murica (American flag emoji) (eagle emoji) great” — a name it was given by Cruz. The hatred he and others in the group espoused met little resistance from its active members. In one part of the group chat, Cruz wrote that he hated, “jews, ni**ers, immigrants.” He talked about killing Mexicans, keeping black people in chains and cutting their necks. The statements were not made in jest.

There are hundreds of racist messages, racist memes and racist Instagram videos posted in the group. After one member expressed hatred for gay people, Cruz agreed, saying, “Shoot them in the back of head.” White women drew Cruz’s hatred as well, specifically those in interracial relationships, whom he referred to repeatedly as traitors.

There are many excuses for not implementing sane gun control and many attempts to put blame for these massacres anywhere than where they belong.

“These massacres happen because kids play violent video games!!!, they scream. The problem is, kids play these same games in England and Canada and France. Those countries haven’t had 12 school shootings in the first two months of the new year. Why? BECAUSE THEY DON’T HAVE PRETTY MUCH UNFETTERED ACCESS TO GUNS AND WEAPONS OF WAR.

“These massacres happen because kids watch violent movies hoisted on them by movie studios controlled by leftists!!!” They scream. The problem is, kids watch these same movies in Japan and Switzerland and Germany. Those countries haven’t had 12 school shootings in the first two months of the new year. Why? BECAUSE THEY DON’T HAVE PRETTY MUCH UNFETTERED ACCESS TO GUNS AND WEAPONS OF WAR.

“These massacres happen because abortions are protected!!!” The problem is, reproductive choice is protected in many countries. Those countries however haven’t had 12 school shootings in the first two months of the new year. Why? BECAUSE THEY DON’T HAVE PRETTY MUCH UNFETTERED ACCESS TO GUNS AND WEAPONS OF WAR.

“These massacres occur because children spit in the eye of god by not invoking its name before starting class!!!”, they scream!!! The problem is, neither do most industrialized countries in the world and they haven’t had 12 school shootings in the first two months of the new year. Why? BECAUSE THEY DON’T HAVE PRETTY MUCH UNFETTERED ACCESS TO GUNS AND WEAPONS OF WAR.

“These massacres occur because the United States has thumbed its nose at my sky faerie by redefining the word – marriage”, they scream!!! The problem is, so have Argentina (2010), Australia (2017), Belgium (2003), Brazil (2013), Canada (2005), Colombia (2016), Denmark (2012), England/Wales (2013), Finland (2015), France (2013), Germany (2017), Greenland (2015), Iceland (2010), Ireland (2015),Luxembourg (2014), Malta (2017), Uruguay (2013), the Netherlands (2003), New Zealand (2013), Norway (2008), Portugal (2010), Scotland (2014), South Africa (2006), Spain (2005) and Sweden (2009). They haven’t had 12 school shootings in the first two months of the new year. Why? BECAUSE THEY DON’T HAVE PRETTY MUCH FUCKING UNFETTERED ACCESS TO GUNS AND WEAPONS OF WAR.

Unfettered access to guns cause these massacres, nothing else.

      • Reality.Bites

Ending the life of a mass murderer does nothing to change the outcome of their crimes or prevent further ones, but it does have the effect of turning all members of society into premeditated murderers.

        • LeeCMH

          That was my ultimate conclusion.

I also agree that guaranteed life in prison (supermax) would be more punishing than death.

This guy is 19 years old, with an average life expectancy of another 50 or so years. A prison cell for the remainder of one’s life starting at 19.

          • Neely OHara

But how many impressionable young men will he encounter during his incarceration, spreading his twisted beliefs and poisoning minds? At least keep him away from the rest of the inmates…

          • LeeCMH

            Supermax isolation.

Those at the Colorado supermax prison who are in isolation, do not even regularly see other human beings, or even outside. Their food is pushed through a slot so the prisoners don’t even normally see the guards.

It is a horrible punishment worse than death. -fitting

    • Reality.Bites

If you want him to suffer, life in prison does the best job. He likely wasn’t expecting to survive. He could survive a long, long time in maximum security.

But I expect he’ll get the death penalty and be executed in ten years or so.

      • Devon Rodriguez

Officers have tanks now. They have drones. They have automatic rifles, and planes, and helicopters, and they go through military-style boot camp training. It’s a constant complaint from what remains of this country’s civil liberties caucus. In June of 2014, the ACLU issued a report on how police departments now possess arsenals in need of a use. Few paid attention, as usually happens.

The worst part of outfitting our police officers as soldiers has been psychological. Give a man access to drones, tanks, and body armor, and he’ll reasonably think that his job isn’t simply to maintain peace, but to eradicate danger. Instead of protecting and serving, police are searching and destroying.

If officers are soldiers, it follows that the neighborhoods they patrol are battlefields. And if they’re working battlefields, it follows that the population is the enemy. And because of correlations, rooted in historical injustice, between crime and income and income and race, the enemy population will consist largely of people of color, and especially of black men. Throughout the country, police officers are capturing, imprisoning, and killing black males at a ridiculous clip, waging a very literal war on people of color.

        • “Caught being black” is now a crime that apparently warrants shooting to death in the USA.

    • Stogiebear

Don’t forget that side trip to McDonalds for a burger on the way to the jail for processing.

      • Randy Left Brooklyn

That did no happen. He went to MacDonald’s in the 80 minutes between the time he left the shooting and the time police found him. He was just out shopping at Walmart, etc.

There is no need to make things up and act like the police took him out for a burger.

        • Randy Left Brooklyn

          From cbsnews.com

Timeline as it happened Wednesday, Feb. 14
Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said the suspect arrived at the high school at 2:19 p.m. Wednesday, entering the east stairwell with a rifle inside a black, soft case. The suspect exited the stairwell and pulled the rifle out of the case at 2:21 p.m. local time. He then readied his rifle and began shooting into rooms 1215, 1216, 1214 … he then went back into 1216, 1215 and 1214. The suspect then took the west stairwell to the second floor and shot one victim in room 1234 on the second floor. The suspect then took the east stairwell to the third floor … he then dropped his rifle and backpack containing extra ammunition and ran down the stairs … exiting building 12 and ran toward the tennis courts. The suspect then turned west and tried to mix in with students who were trying to run away fearing for their lives. The suspect then arrived at a Walmart store and bought a drink at the Subway and left the Walmart on foot.

The suspect then arrived at a McDonald’s around 3:01 p.m. and he left on foot. At 3:41 p.m., 40 minutes after leaving McDonald’s, the suspect was detained at 4700 Wyndham Lakes Drive by the Coconut Creek Police Department.

          • KarenAtFOH

So I presume he slipped into the stairwell as someone else was leaving, and that’s how he got around locked doors?

          • Randy Left Brooklyn

I don’t know. I assume the doors open if you are trying to exit, because we would want people to be able to flee a building with a shooter.

What struck me was that he wandered around Walmart and McDonald’s like some ordinary teenager for 80 minutes after the shooting. How does someone sit there, having shot 17 people within walking distance of these places, and just blend in?

          • Judas Peckerwood

            Sociopaths are like that.

        • These are references to previous crimes, not Cruz. I believe Stogiebear was referring to Dylann Roof. (Though it was Burger King, and they brought him food from there, not took him to there )

        • Stogiebear didn’t say that he did or that the police did. He said it sarcastically.

    • Kruhn

And Black Lives Matter is a racist terrorist group?

      • Cipher

    • Ninja0980

      • Devon Rodriguez

If you are asking the question: then you already know the answer….

    • northern_neighbour

All absolutely true … America is a Hellhole for racial and sexual minorities, for women’s rights, for even basic democracy and justice, more abstractly. And the consequences however are far from abstract … Lives are lost and the the lives of the survivors shattered forever.

American so-called ‘christianity’ rings hollow with hypocrisy and the most tepid of responses. They’ll all be busy with their useless “thoughts and prayers” tomorrow. Some though will be organising those school walk-out protests in March. Good upon those who continue to fight back.

In far far from perfect Canada we nonetheless grieve for your society, although we are somewhat fearful about the spillover from the turmoil and carnage going on in our hugely powerful and dystopian neighbour.

We wish you guys the best but somehow are braced for the worst.

What happened in 2016 was a mockery of so-called “democracy” and the triumph of a cruel & racist oligarchy. It must be agonising for Americans of good will and activism, who love their land, to keep fighting rather than moving elsewhere.

I am a chain immigrant. Great Grandpa came first, then Great Grandma. No evidence that they came here legally. They never learned to speak English.

    • DaddyRay

My grandmother came from Ireland as an orphan and was put on a train that was arranged to place orphans with families. She ended up settling on a farm in Iowa. My parents found out that she never became a citizen and never had a social security number when she tried to file for Social Security and medicare. Until that time nobody knew. She died when I was just a baby so I don’t have any memories of her.

      • It Takes a Village, People

        Anchor babies abound! 🙂

      • RoFaWh

We have problems here in Canada with people whose births weren’t documented. One woman, now in the throes of arguing with the gubbmint, was born in a hippie commune with no birth registered. Now she’s trying to prove she was born in Canada, but it’s been a long time and the trail is cold.

What country would the immigration people deport her to if they were to win this argument?

One woman of my acquaintance was brought to Canada as an infant. Her parents underwent naturalization, but didn’t bother to include her. When, in her fifties, she applied for a passport to go on a European tour, “they” responded (quite rightly) that she wasn’t a citizen. However, the authorities fast tracked her citizenship process and she went on her tour with a passport.

Too bad that sometimes the bureaucrats forget that one of the chief purposes of having any government at all was justice, and sometimes their regulations leave out special circumstances, resulting in injustice. Usually the responsible minister can waive bureaucratic nonsense, thank gawd.

      • I found out I am large percent from Ireland (I had no idea) through ancestry.com so maybe we are cousins 🙂

    • There was no such thing as “legal” because everyone was. Anyone who showed up at Ellis Island or other immigration points up until the First World War did not need a Visa or have to worry about immigration quotas. America needed workers — and undesirables (first Irish in the mid 1800’s, then Eastern and Southern Europeans and Asians on the West Coast came in droves before the doors slammed shut after World War 1.
If you have some coins, had someone waiting for you who would vouch for you, and could pass a basic health test (no infectious diseases or deformities) you were let in. Many people were turned back — and families broken up — because of deformities.

So… tell me again how him being a white supremacist is fake news?

  • mdub in Puyallup

One of my right-wing in-laws has been posting a flurry of items on FB about this. I used to challenge him on these types of things, but I quickly realized it was useless. Below is one of the latest:

  • AJD

He also said his birth mother was Jewish, which makes him Jewish. Self-hatred much?

    • Racist Alert– I could find one reference to your claim to a comment on some right wing website that could not be confirmed. Also, his ties to neo nazis are still being investigated. But I do know 7 of his victims were Jewish — and the community — Muslim, Christian, and Jewish is getting together to try to comfort those hurt these shootings and fight for sane gun control. This is bothering the racist right now, probably including you. Hate is not going to win out in the end. Go back under your rock please.

      • AJD

Uh, it was in the CNN report. He wrote it himself. And it speaks to how much bigotry is often driven by self-hatred.

  • Want to know what else went up in smoke in the Florida massacre? Almost $4 million in the community’s investment, which is the average cost to raise a child to adulthood of $233,610 multiplied by 17.

If robots of equivalent sophistication and value that had taken 18 years to build had been destroyed in a comparable act of vandalism, there’d be multilateral public outrage and swift measures taken to prevent it happening again.

Don’t look to the Republican Party for a solution. They are directly funded by the NRA, who are in turn funded by gun manufacturers, whose sole motivation is to increase gun sales. The loss of a few dozen school children in a gun massacre doesn’t matter to them, because they need to sell more guns to make more profit. By voting Republican, you are voting for the NRA to keep on supplying guns with no background checks for violent criminal behaviour or mental illness.

The NRA-funded Republican Party have repeatedly shown they have negligible human compassion or empathy, and are motivated primarily by greed for money and power. Might the loss of $4 million finally spark their interest in eliminating school shootings?

Why not just ban assault rifles and then when people are upset about it, just send them thoughts and prayers? If “thoughts and prayers” are good enough for people who have lost their families, then they’re good enough for people who have lost their guns.

    • We need to put justices on SCOTUS who will let us do two key things.
      1. Overturn Citizens United — that lets corporations through lobbying pressure groups put “dirty money” into American politics. The NRA is going to dump 500 million into political campaigns in 2018 – and probably much more that is unaccounted for through other gun company and right wing donations.
      2. Somehow redefine the Second Amendment so that military grade weapons (assault weapons and magazines) are not made available to the general public without a specific need or mission. National Guard members and reservists should be able to keep these at home with appropriate safeguards like they do in Finland, Switzerland and other nations if they wish to comply with the language about keeping a “well armed militia”.
Unless we change core Constitutional provisions we are pissing in the wind with gun control.

  • The assailant with a gun always has tactical advantage. Let’s say the NRA advice is heeded, and ALL students and staff carry guns in all schools, keeping them on their person in open-carry. Next thing is, a class of kids is studying Geography, and a gunman bursts into the room firing as he enters, killing the teacher and all 25 students in less than 30 seconds. How are the kids going to have time to reach into their desks or their pockets or wherever else they keep their guns, and open fire on the gunman? The gunman always has the advantage of surprise.

In the Orlando mass shooting at a gay club, for the patrons to defend themselves, they’d have had to be dancing with gun holsters around their waists, in a constant state of alert in case a gunman should at any moment burst into the club and open fire with an automatic weapon.

No gun massacre has ever been stopped by an armed civilian. They’re CAUSED by armed civilians. Gun control via background checks and needs based assessment is the only solution. No 19 year old school kid needs an assault rifle that can kill 60 people in 30 seconds.

    • Gianni

A school full of kids with guns – what could possible go wrong? The NRA leadership is full of idiots plus more than enough other idiots support them.

Just how much hatred can fit in a teenager’s heart, and why? It’s just beyond sad and reprehensible.

  • PDQ

I have to wonder what this fool – and others like him who kill people in large numbers – see when they look in the mirror. Do they see someone strong and tough? What I see are losers. Every single one of these people look like a maladjusted loser with no social skills and no friends.

This one, with his young looks, slight build and ears that are perfect for grabbing onto will be very, very popular in prison. He’ll be in high demand, but the men trying to get near him won’t be his friends.
