Grocery Chain Winn-Dixie To File For Bankruptcy

Bloomberg reports:

Bi-Lo LLC, the supermarket company that owns the Winn-Dixie chain, is preparing for a potential bankruptcy filing as soon as next month, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The retailer is planning to shut almost 200 stores as part of the move — either before or after the filing — said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the process isn’t public.

With low margins and ample competition, the grocery business has always been challenging. But now the industry is contending with a more aggressive push by big-box retailers and Amazon.com Inc., which acquired Whole Foods last year to give it a larger brick-and-mortar presence. The moves threaten to force older chains to either consolidate or revamp their operations.

This is not good, but key is that supermarkets must make themselves attractive to consumers.

    • No corporate model, whether it’s amazon or Winn Dixie, is good. The best solution is the co-op model.

you need to dumpster dive, then

    • another_steve

Here in Maryland we have the Wegmans chain. It’s a mid-Atlantic/New England chain. Very gay. Mine features a produce department with 100 different versions of cut zucchini.

I mean, if you like your zucchini cut in the shape of baby dolphins, it’s the place to shop at.

      • JohnJay

Yeah, but do they have a big Italian gagootz?

        • another_steve

Haven’t looked for it, but if gay men eat it, I’m sure they carry it.

          • Tor

I think you do something else with big Italian gagootz.

          • JohnJay

Some people think zucchini is italian Cucuzza (Sicilians frequently pronounce “c” as “g”… so… Gagootz. ) It isn’t. “Gagootz” grows differently than zucs, and get much bigger, as seen in this linked article. Of course, when said on the street, a big gagootz means exactly what you think it means.

            https://greenwichvillageitalian.com/2016/03/19/pasta-with-cucuzza-gagootz/

          • kiprian

Alas, our gagootz crop was wiped out by squash beetles last year. I’m hoping that next year will be better. And no, I’ve never seen them in the Italian markets here, nor the Wegman’s. Great place for mussels and clams though.

      • Matt G, Rochester

Wegman’s is owned by a single family and originated and still headquartered here in Rochester, NY. They are nearly always at the top of lists of best places to work. Their store brands can be really good deals, but they can also be somwhat pricey for name brands. They focus on having higher quality as well, which justifies some of their pricing.

        • another_steve

What particularly impresses me about ours here in Central Maryland is their diverse workforce. I’ve encountered very openly queer people employed as cashiers there, including several trans people.

And not to mention all the young female cashiers with their bright green neon hair. 😉

Winn Dixie currently operates 485 stores in South Eastern part of the US like Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, and Mississippi.

      • safari

So they are closing 2/5 of their stores.

    • Librarykid

Lots of stores in the South. There was one in a shopping center on Piedmont near Lindbergh in Atlanta. For a while part of its sign was not completely lighting up and in giant huge letters it read, “WINN DIX”.

I smell the next Kroger chain buyout.

  • Winn-Dixie has repeatedly gotten in trouble over the years for being aggressively anti-union.

    Kroger’s/Smith’s are union stores.

    Guess where we shop?

    • Oh, Parker

We shop at Kroger a lot. Sort of reveals the lie that unions hurt businesses and make it harder for them to compete and succeed, doesn’t it.

In my community in Greenville, South Carolina, Bi-Lo is struggling with an aging demographic. It’s clientele will not be able to transition easily to Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods or other natural-foods type stores in town as they are more identified more as Piggly-Wiggly type customers. The only other big market is Publix$$ or Harris-Teeter$$$$ (Kroger-owned) and of course, Wal-Mart. The newest competitor is LIDL from Germany and they are drawing away Bi-Lo’s customers as well. There are rumblings that Target will sell eventually to Amazon and customers are indifferent to the news it seems. Big shakeups coming in grocery world….

    • another_steve

Man and I shop at Harris Teeter only when they’re running a particularly good sale.

      Otherwise they’re a terrible rip-off.

      • TheManicMechanic

the HT near me (very convenient, only a mile and a half away) is at best okay. Like most chains, shopping the specials and other sales helps keep costs down. The one thing that is consistently bad at that store is the produce department. Always low on stock, a lot of what’s left are beleaguered vegetable that look like they were dragged behind the truck that delivered them. I have a huge choice of stores within our general area, we often shop at Giant or Wegmans the most, plus Costco on occasions.

    • Dale Snyder

Let me make one correction to your post, and it’s when I attended NC State as a grad student in 1990:

      HarrisTeeter $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

      • cayliffe

Seriously LOL. They are dazzling inside but I always feel underdressed:) Kroger would like to take over the world. We lost so many decent markets to them in SoCal. It’s so weird to go into a big market like HTeeter or Publix and see 50 running feet of various flavors of Keebler and Nabisco cookies. Or a 100 ft of cheese doodles. All crap and cardboard. It’s why the little healthy food start-ups can’t get into the big markets – Vendor Slotting…

        • Dale Snyder

Isn’t that the truth! Where I am (just outside of Cleveland) we have Giant Eagle (okay), Wal Mart (okay and cheap) and a Trader Joe’s (Good but you can’t find a parking space).

          Oh, and fuck Kroger’s! Haha!

      Yeah, I read Trump’s tweet and was like,”Um, no…”.

      • I read thru Seth’s thread and the timing works out perfectly.

Spring 2013: Trump’s people start doing polls for a possible run
Summer 2013: Russia suddenly goes nuts trying to convince Donald to move his Miss Universe pageant that year to Moscow; he does so and they collect fresh kompromat on him
Autumn 2013: Donald tries to get his Trump Tower Moscow project off the ground; during this time, he makes no secret of the fact he plans to run
2014: Russian agents begin their operation
Summer 2015: Donald formally announces he’s running, not really surprising anybody

Fun coincidence: The Russian agents did in fact pay Americans to attend protests, often in costumed roles. It was reported long ago that Donald’s people had to hire bystanders in NYC to put on Trump t-shirts and attend his announcement.

      • Robincho

Which one? I read ALL its tweets and am, like, “Um, no”…

    • gaycuckhubby

Oh please. The Russians dont care about trump. He was a happy accident.

      They were destroying Obama/Clinton.

They started this in 2014 IMMIDIATELY after we started sanctions

      • No, they cared. They reacted to the sanctions, sure, but the decision to interfere had its genesis a full year earlier.

        • gaycuckhubby

          I disagree. (IMHO)
In the indictments today they also said they wanted Sanders to win. This was about defeating clinton.

          • Tor

Maybe, but it could have been about splitting the Democratic vote.

          • BobSF_94117

Of course it was about defeating Clinton, but to defeat Clinton, they had to pick someone to back, no? And they pushed Trump a heck of a lot more than Sanders because it was so clear what a catastrophe Trump would be.

          • Tor

Pushing Sanders and Stein would divide the Democratic vote.

          • gaycuckhubby

Oh I agree… I think the goal was to defeat Clinton. Trump ended up being the tool.
I just dont buy that they groomed him. I think he fell in their lap

          • -M-

Uh, they’ve been grooming him for decades. Flattery, schmoozing, feeding him their talking points, money, kompromat.

I don’t know whether they planned for him to run, though it would make sense that they encouraged him to even if it wasn’t an explicit ‘run for office and we’ll help your campaign’ offer, which it also could have been. But he’s not just any boob, they’ve put a lot of work into making that idiot useful to them.

          • BobSF_94117

“Groomed” is a bit much. The Trump/Russia connection goes back many years. As soon as he started telling his oligarch buddies that he was even thinking about it, you know that had to get their attention. Even as a sideshow, he would have tarnished our system.

          • -M-

He’s been in Russian’s sights since the eighties. Groomed is perfectly apt description of how they handled the gullible moron who’s insanely vain and greedy.

          • No, because by that argument, they wanted Stein and Johnson to win, but of the two, they seemed to push more for Stein because she was drawing off Dem votes whereas Johnson was pulling libertarian-minded GOPers.

The point in supporting Sanders was to divide the Dem vote and suppress it—in addition to weakening Clinton. The real goal was to try to split the Sanders-left from the Democrats.

          • -M-

Promoting Sanders was a way to hurt Hillary. Doesn’t mean they wanted him to win. (Although I suppose of the three he’d be their second choice.)

They “promoted” lots of views they don’t actually support just because it would help to stoke division.

They don’t even care about Trump aside from using him as a weapon.

Faux news & the rest are trying to spin the fact that they promoted some anti-Trump views after the election as proof that they didn’t try to help him win.

          • gaycuckhubby

            Yes. Exactly my point.
            This was all about Clinton

          • I think the plan was the weaken Clinton. I don’t think anyone (Russians, Republicans, anyone) actually thought Trump would win. I mean aren’t we all still shocked that so many people actually voted for him?

          • -M-

Yes, I the plan was probably sowing chaos and division to weaken and discredit Clinton and democracy. At some point they realize it’s working well enough they could potentially sway the election.

    • worstcultever

I think they’ve been grooming the dumbass debtor dotard forever.

      • Since the day he began borrowing money from them, yes.

        • bzrd

because they saw how corruptible he was

        • -M-

Even before. Donnie went to Russia at the invitation of a Soviet ambassador in the eighties. It was part of a push to recruit more useful assets and agents of influence when they realized many of their ‘spies’ in the West were just relaying publicly available information.

        • unsavedheathen

          Laundering money for them.

    • -M-

Also even if they started with no idea he’d run (hah!) that doesn’t charge the fact that they did work to support & influence his campaign. And even if we suppose that maybe they originally just saw him as another divisive candidate to push a little, that’s still interference and they did eventually go all in for his campaign.

      Bish needs better excuses.

      • Amanda B. Rekendwith

Another thing that raises my suspicious as to what Trump is up to. He keeps claiming “no collusion, no collusion” as if that is what needs to be determined. He is muddying the waters for his base, and the mainstream media need to step up and deny him this “bait and switch” method of extricating himself of wrongdoing.

There was a good article at The Daily Beast last week, outlining that the key issue is conspiracy and that is an important distinction… (And if there is one thing Don the CON knows, it’s CONspiracy )

“Conspiracy is a much broader crime than is generally understood. The guidelines for judges who instruct juries say that the prosecution need only prove that there was “a mutual understanding, either spoken or unspoken, [Emphasis added] between two or more people to cooperate with each other to accomplish an unlawful act.”

It doesn’t matter whether the “mutual understanding” was before, during or after the crime was committed. “It is not necessary that a defendant be fully informed of all the details of the conspiracy, or all of its participants,” the model jury instructions continue. “You need not find that the alleged members of the conspiracy met together and entered into any express or formal agreement.”

        Full article is here

We have a new chain here in Southern California called Grocery Outlet Bargain Market and it’s awesome because they badically take overstocks and products where the manufacturer changed the packaging and that sort of thing and they sell it it cheap. They stock regular grocery staples like milk, eggs, bread, fresh fruits and veggies as well. It’s a great opportunity to try things that you wouldn’t necessarily want to pay full price for. Thry have lots of organic items and a good seafood section if you don’t mind frozen. And because they stock limited quantity items it’s always fun to see what’s new. It and Trader Joe’s are my favorites.

    • bzrd

just bought a box of crackers for $1, good price for 12 oz.

      • SoCalGal20

Oh yeah! I usually go there looking for things for snacks and lunch at work. You really get some great deals there:

    • katkelly57

We have them here in WA state…love that place.

WinCo is another good place pricewise, it’s employee owned.
The one near my daughter is huuuuuuge!
You need to plan a field trip to shop.

I’ve never seen such a diverse bulk section either…..way cheaper than bulk in chain stores.
You bring and bag your own groceries….no biggie when the costs are much lower.

      • SoCalGal20

Oh yeah! There is ONE WinCo sort of near me. I do love that it’s employee owned. And, yes, it’s huge.

        • katkelly57

When I visit my daughter and have a few things I’d like to get, I just have her drop me off and I call her when I’m done.
I don’t think I’ve seen the whole store yet.

It’s always crowded no matter what time you go and I don’t do well in crowds.

        • netxtown

Pretty much the only place i buy groceries. But! They do play the ‘hide the jackass’ price game on occasion. For example: a dozen eggs: $1.08. An 18 pack? $2.26 A 60-cnt pack? $8.99

      • David L. Caster

WinCo is our primary store as a matter of fact. Followed by Frazier Farms for produce, followed by Food for Less.

        • katkelly57

We shopped at FFL when living in FL.

    • Lars Littlefield

For many years I enjoyed shopping at Food For Less, a local Intermountain West chain started by a group of local brothers big into discounting just to see how low they could go, The stores were giant places where cereals were stocked to the sky, children would get lost in mountains of potatoes. They were places where you had to bag your own groceries.

But Kroger bought the chain, raised prices and still made you bag your own food. Then Kroger closed all but a few of them. Kroger owns most of th food store chains and has homogenized them so there is little or no difference among brands operating under the Kroger Co. umbrella such as Kroger, Ralphs, King Soopers, City Market, Dillons, Smith’s, Fry’s, Bakers, QC, Owen’s, and Scott’s. Food for Not Very Much is now a distant memory.

The South will know they’ve finally lost to the North when the last Piggly Wiggly finally closes because of Amazon.

Are there still any A&P stores left in the East?

    • greenmanTN

Big Lots does more or less the same thing in their grocery area, but no fresh produce, dairy, etc. I drop by every once in a while to see what they have in their international foods section. I’ve picked up good udon noodles, Thai and Indian ingredients, all sorts of unusual things.

Nearly instant death is too good for them. Seize all their wealth and property, liquidate it, and give the proceeds to the national treasury, then put them in jail for a few years. When they come out they will have nothing. The experience of abject poverty is going to be the worst thing they will experience after their imprisonment.

To have had a lot of money then suddenly to be penniless is the worst thing for someone accustomed to luxury. Let them see what it is like to be truly poor, to do without insurance or a place to live, to not know where their next meal is coming from. Let them work for minimum wage and see what that is like.

Don’t worry, today’s indictments do not mark the summation of the investigation.
Mueller still has interviews to conduct.
      Big stuff still to come.

I look at the prices of staples in the grocery store and I find it harder and harder to believe that it’s a low-margin business.

    • Where I live, a ten mile drive = 10-15% difference in prices a the same chain. Another ten miles = another 3-5%. That tells me that in the more urban, affluent, higher-population county at one end of that drive grocery stores have at least a 13-20% greater margin on top of the baseline profit of the stores 20 miles North.

      • David L. Caster

Works the same for gas. Never buy gas near a highway, and particularly not one at the end of an off-ramp. Plan ahead enough to get at least a mile or two away from the highway where there are other gas stations to fill up.

    • djcoastermark

Exactly. When I can go to the produce market down the street from me and buy 2 red peppers for a dollar and go to a win dippy or pubix, also down the street, and have to pay 1.50 (or more) for one dang red pepper, I too have a hard time believing the margins are super slim.

    • Snarkaholic

I had a classmate (in culinary school) who worked for a pharmacy as a cashier. One of the job’s perks was that she was allowed to buy a lot of different items at the store’s cost. One hundred Vitamin C capsules cost her only FOUR cents!
      Mark-ups are ridiculous.

if memory serves me, Winn Dixie was involved in a controversy about a cross-dresser at one time. Not sure what happened, but they seem to have improved their corporate lgbt status. Of course when we are all put in camps, that won’t really matter.

    • DaddyRay

Is it wireless – if so have you tried new batteries

    • Moebym of the Returners

Unplug and plug it back in? Disable and re-enable it in Device Manager (if it’s Windows you’re using)? Remove dust that’s collected on the optical sensor on the bottom? It’s hard to know how to help without knowing what kind of mouse you’re using.

Mac or Windows?? If Mac, unplug, or if necessary reboot

    • boobert

wireless, it works in the other computer, unplugged the wireless part, took the other mouse and tried that, nothing. I hate this touchpad. And I restarted.

    • Cuberly Deux

Sounds like the mouse driver went poof…..it happens.

You can attempt to unplug your other USB peripherals, other than your keyboard, wait a minute then plug your mouse back in to see if the system recognizes it. But, sounds like a restart is in order. You can use the arrow keys on your keypad to navigate to your restart menu.

      • boobert

I tried a restart , nothing, tried a different usb port nothing

        • Lazycrockett

          new battery?

          • boobert

yep works fine on the other computer

        • Cuberly Deux

          You on a PC?

Have you installed any new hardware or programs today or over the past few days?

        • Cuberly Deux

Is your Fn key active? Sometimes that in an accidental combination with a few other keys can result in some not fun stuff.

Press and hold the “Fn” key on the laptop keyboard; on most laptops, it is located between the “Ctrl” and “Alt” keys. 2. Press the “F9” key once, then release the “Fn” key. This keyboard shortcut is used to disable or enable the touchpad software.

        • Cuberly Deux

BTW-even though that info says trackpad, it should work for a mouse as well. That’s if the Fn key was pressed accidentally in combo with another key.

          This is for Windows 10.

The only other thing I can think of is if you accidentally activated your Accessibility features for your keyboard. Open system preferences and click on Accessibility. Click down to Mouse, make sure the arrow keys to control cursor function is off.

          • boobert

Sorry for the late response. That sounds like what I did. I’ve been on this thing for hours. Did a system restore . mouse works but now it wont start. now I’m reinstalling windows. I hate windows10 ! I’ll let you know tomorrow if I get it running again and try your suggestions.

          • Cuberly Deux

Ugh, so sorry. I know that’s a pain in the ass.

Fingers crossed, though if you’r starting from a fresh install the issue, if it was accidental command or driver related, should be mote.

Let me know how it goes.

          • boobert

I’m back. it’s just a pain to reinstall everything, I don’t know why the mouse stopped. everything else was working. I think i hit some keys that made it go crazy when I was carrying it in the other room. I’m beat. I’ll catch up on posts tomorrow. Thanks for the help.

    • worstcultever

They do wear out. Happened to me the other night, multiple mice, thought I had some fucked up virus. Nope, just shitty, worn out mice. Good thing to have laptop touchpad, though I vastly prefer mice. Go order a new one, and if you like it order another one immediately too.

(Sorry for yr hassle, I hate such shit, hope it is just the mice)

      • boobert

it works on the other computer, I was carrying in the other room to scan a pic and hit some combo of buttons

    • LeeCMH

Windows? If yes, delete the driver in Device Manager and allow the machine to re-load it. Might not work, but worth a try.

    • Lazycrockett

If the mouse is working in Safe Mode, there is likely a driver or software conflict. To fix this problem, follow the steps below. Expand the mouse (mice) option in Device Manager by clicking the + symbol. Remove all mice listed by highlighting each device and then pressing the delete key on the keyboard.Jan 24, 2018

    • Hue-Man

Update mouse driver. I was going to suggest uninstall/re-install mouse driver but makes navigating difficult…

The local Publix here is quite a nice spot to stock up on eye candy.

Pubix, where shopping is a pleasure, As long as you can afford the cover charge and prices.

        • TampaDink

It’s odd, before our move, I did most of the grocery shopping at Winn-Dixie (and the one that recently became a Harvey’s) but it is less than a mile & a half to a huge Publix & Trader Joe’s is just as close. W/D is way across town.

          • djcoastermark

The whole Harvey’s thing is a bit odd in the bay area. I wonder if that has been part of the getting rid of Winn Dippy just to bring in the Harvey’s name. From what I’ve seen, Harvs is just WD remodeled a bit an nothing more. Same products under the “SouthEast Grocers” name.

          • TampaDink

I first knew of Harvey’s when I was in college in Valdosta, GA. There is also one in Thomasville (GA) about 30 miles north where my partner’s family live. Never had an inspiring or horrific shopping experience in a Harvey’s…it is typically forgettable.

That T.J.’s (back when we lived in the big city) was 8 miles from home…and the nearest Costco was 13 miles away. Now that we’ve relocated to the small town/state capitol, we have T.J.’s less than 1.5 miles away & I think Costco might be as far as 6 miles. Life is more convenient here (and cheaper) but…there will be no over indulging in the local gay bars…. since there isn’t a single gay bar in this region!
edit to add: That was an excellent night! I only wish the debauchery hadn’t been limited.)

          • djcoastermark

Yikes, no local gay bar ? Hubs wanted to hit happy hour tonight as we hadn’t been out for a while so at 5 we went down to Enigma. Much to our surprise they had a DJ already playing. It was the old classics. So much fun. I couldn’t imagine living somewhere where I couldn’t go on a friday at 5 for happy hour and having this to entertain us, outside, at the bar, in 85 degree weather. (random OT thought)

Man, to be a fly on the wall of Mueller’s brain. I can’t begin to imagine directing an investigation so complex, of such multifaceted and spectacular nefariousness, with such crucial stakes for a nation.

My main takeaway from today’s events is that he’s completely pantsed Dump’s ability to fire him with this particular group of indictments and charges. It’s just beautiful (JS Bach-ish even) how he’s constructing this thing both legalwise and mediawise. And he seems to know how to gaslight a gaslighter.

Go Big Bob Go, and thank you – satisfied customer!

    • I’m gonna give a “grudging nod of acknowledgment” toward Trump’s lawyers who apparently helped Donald today maintain his delusion that this investigation isn’t anywhere near him or his people. In other words, seems like some folks close to him are trying to keep him from obstructing justice even more.

      • Bad Tom

Which allows judicial processes to operate unimpeded.
        ——-
Are Trump’s lawyers hidden Patriots? Or just trying to keep Trump out of even more tar?

        • Don’t know the motives, but it’s clear to me now that’s what they’ve been doing.

Time and time again, we’ve seen reports Donald doesn’t care and has been entirely willing to commit more obstruction and abuse of power crimes, including the reports he tried to fire Mueller last year. The people around him keep stopping him.

      • Max_1

I look at DJ Trump in the light of a mobster…
As long as he can conveniently shed himself of the people that have surrounded him when he and they have committed crimes when Trump is looking for an out, he’ll always think he’s untouchable. No matter how close Mueller get’s to Trump (Manafort ran the campaign), as long as Trump can see distance between he and them (sic), he’ll never get that at the time of the crime he and they (sic) were connected, thus conspired. Trump already projected this out there…

This would be another reason not to trust Mueller. You already indicted him once. And obviously offered him immunity. Now you figure out he’s done other stuff?

It’s almost certainly not covered under the immunity agreement…but you just figured this out now?

What, is this investigation being run by a partisan Republican?

      …Oh.

      • TampaDink

I’m hoping that the added charges are not a sign of the Mueller investigation being inept, but a sign of them discovering more & more layers of corruption & deception.

        • Treant

I’m going for “Mueller is corrupt” not “Mueller is inept.”

Not that the two are mutually exclusive. In lieu of any new charges, and since this doesn’t seem to be taking the edge off that school shooting thing, he’s gonna pile on Manafort. Who’s cheap and easy and not directly connected to the Administration any longer.

          • TampaDink

With every other awful thing happening in the world, I’ve got to cling to the notion that Mueller is working on behalf of the good & decent Americans who want all of the Russian sponsored politicians exposed for who & what they are. Traitors.

          • Treant

I’ll go with a much darker interpretation; there was a cold war.

            We lost.

So true. I’m hoping that Mueller will be playing dozens of cards at once & winning every game.

      • houstonray

There was a talking legal head on one of the shows earlier. She said this is most likely related to Gates’ “queen for a day” testimony/arrangement (Rachel had a segment last night explaining that term). Manafort doesn’t have blanket immunity. Only immunity for what he confessed to and what they were investigating. Apparently Gates’ could have pointed Mueller in the direction of the new charges. If Gates knows about illegal activity and doesn’t talk about it, in the queen for a day arrangement, he will be charged and immunity for him is off the table. It’s a way to get co conspirators to confess against one another.

        • Treant

Or they could have accidentally found that “Manafort Kills Children” file that was accidentally misplaced under Mueller’s desk and a pile of Doritos packages. 🙂

    • Max_1

    • djcoastermark

You’re in luck if you go to a WD. It’s all those combined into one. A one stop shopping if you will. This weeks “Deli Special” is a 2 for 4 dollar deli cooked hours ago old fried fish sandwich with a surprise free packet of tartar sauce. Mmmm, ptomaine yummies. ( I kid you not, that is the deli delight this week in their ad )

      • TampaDink

One thing I miss about W-D is their inexpensive house brand of club soda/seltzers. I like my vodka with some fizz.

They raised the prices as of the first of the year for all sodas. Not so cheap anymore. In fact , this old logo has been replaced with the new one facing the other way. *lube not included, but available for purchase in the pharmacy department.

(Scratches head) OK, and this changes the NRA donations, removes one gun from the streets, or legislates changes in gun laws…how? For that matter, it isn’t even a general strike. Teachers still get paid, the kids just don’t learn what little they were going to anyway.

It would be smart to arrange the walkout and organize groups for the day to actually do something–like lobby Congress or blast information or…well, anything, really. This gives no indication of that.

(Grandstanding never impresses me unless it’s truly an unknown or under-appreciated subject; that is not the case here).

      • greenmanTN

I disagree. IF the walk-outs are large-scale and nationwide (and that’s a big if) it puts further pressure on politicians to drop their “business as usual” pandering to the NRA and actually listen to their constituents. It would keep the heat on.

        • Treant

Mebbe. But I’m seeing small-scale and very local.

Politicians worry about two things–money and getting kicked out of office summarily enough to render them unable to become lobbyists. Some kids walking out who won’t bother voting five years from now? Not so much.

        • McSwagg

One of the most effective things they could do is register all their eligible peers to vote and then actually show up to the polls in the primaries this spring as well as the general elections this November. THAT will get the attention of the NRA. Otherwise, the conventional wisdom is that young people don’t vote so why listen to them.

      • David Gervais

        See 2nd para.

“Start planning with friends and classmates.”
This is not a call for top down organizing. Each group of students will find their own way to make their voices heard.
I predict some very creative actions that will make us proud.

      • David Gervais

“…the kids just don’t learn what little they were going to anyway.”

This will be a powerful learning experience for many. Civics, personal responsibility for change, organizational and media relations skills, event planning, clarifying and presenting you point, logical thinking skills and much more.
If I were their teacher, they would get academic credit for their learning experience.

        • Treant

If I were their teacher, I’d tolerate their little show because it would garner complaints from the snowflakes if I didn’t.

Walking out on an educational opportunity–paid for by one’s parents–is not exercising one’s rights. Calling your Congresscritter is. Writing them. Showing up at town halls.

Oh, hell, fucking voting. Most of these kids will spend the next ten years being too pure to vote.

      • bkmn

If nothing else, it sends a loud message to the GOP that this generation will not tolerate the status quo.

        • Treant

Well, at least for the twenty minutes of this walkout.

As Ninja noted, registering seniors who are eligible to vote? Good idea. This? Eh.

      • Ninja0980

We need to make sure all these kids are registered to vote to counteract the gun folks who WILL come out this fall for the sake of their precious guns.

  • Blake J Butler

Not all of them are racist, sexist, etc. But a good chunk of them are unapologetically and will never change.

And its pathetic and asinine to try to think that we need to make changes to ourselves to pander to these people’s prejudices and biases against people they hate, and the status quo they fear they don’t want it to die. All for the sake to win elections.

    https://twitter.com/Piatfernandez/status/964665680565063680

    • Treant

He won’t. But (assuming he runs) he can generate enough negative feelings to justify the loss of the Democratic candidate…and later we’ll learn that the Russians hacked the voting again.

I honestly don’t think he’s colluding. He’s simply a very convenient and self-important stooge. Play to that self-importance and you can ruin an election with some cover.

      • Blake J Butler

I think Jill is guilty of colluding, the evidence is pretty self explanatory. I think he ran and threw a fit and claimed the process was rigged because he didn’t win, yet none of his camp said it was rigged against him unless he lost a caucus or primary he thought he should have won by default.

        • Ninja0980

Jill is in this up to her eye balls.
Bernie IMO couldn’t stand the idea he lost fair and square and did the process was rigged over and over because he couldn’t believe people rejected him.

    • TampaDink

How does Bernie stand a chance of getting the Democratic nomination? A good start would be if he were to join the party. Even if he did, he’d never get my vote in a primary.

    • sadoldguy

Bernie (cap probationary) was constructive as a voice for forgotten constituencies, as a candidate he was/is lacking credibility.

    • Here’s what I want to know: Just how much of Sanders’ decision not to drop out when it became mathematically nigh-impossible to win the nomination by April 2016 was prompted by social media chatter and Russian real-world ratfuckery?

And what about that plan the Berners had to try to hijack the Dem convention and force a floor vote? Was that being promoted and pushed by the Russian troll farms?

I mean, it’s not -that- hard to convince people to do what they’d like to do or have happen. But it takes others to comprise a crowd large enough to convince people that their wish has a chance of being fulfilled.

      • Ninja0980

        A mix of both.
If nothing else, I think Bernie enjoyed having people worship him the way he always thought he should be for the first time in his life and damned if he was going to let the good of the country get in the way of that.

The link below shows the state standards for the Social Studies requirements in high school. The reference to “beginning in 2011 -2012” refers to the when the revised standards replaced the older standards. These courses have long been part of the curriculum in Texas. I’m sure other states have similar requirements.

Yep. I think one thing that helps are the students themselves speaking out. We have some very eloquent young people who are able to say what the “adults in the room” are too afraid to say.

Democrats really need to push the fact that cutting food stamps/Social Security/safety net programs will have an impact on the economy. Think of what Florida would be like if the seniors don’t get their Social Security checks.

      • djcoastermark

So many restaurants would be shuttered and abandoned shacks because their clientele would no longer be able to dine on the early bird specials. I can see it now, seniors fighting off the seagulls for the crumbs left behind from the tourists lunch bags. Far fetched, yes, but maybe not too far from reality.

      • Why are you picking out Florida here? Other states would similarly suffer.
Florida is not the oldest state in median population. It is actually trending younger right now – and growing rapidly.
States which are growing older, experiencing no or little population growth, with large % of seniors, and would similarly suffer include —
        Pennsylvania
        Michigan
        West Virginia
        Iowa
        Wisconsin
        —-
All these states were states where the Democratic Party at one point did well. West Virginia is no longer winnable for Democrats in national elections, but all the others are. I think Democrats are talking about these issues- like Social Security. As Michael Moore says, Democratic Candidates need to stop talking DOWN to people outside of coastal elite areas as if they are bigoted low intelligence idiots, and start talking to them as equals. Perhaps getting out of televsion stereotypes (Florida being a big Seinfeld rerun) would help.

          • William

Reagan and Tip O’Neill are dead. Fight dirty, Democrats!

        • –They can be expanded. There is nothing in the Constitution that sets the number of justices at a certain level on the district OR SCOTUS.
          — “Far Right” rulings would have unanticipated consequences. Let’s say that Roe vs. Wade was overturned. All Abortion would be illegal overnight in 20 states is one estimate. This might serve as a greater vehicle for electing Democrats to congress than a Trump deep recession.
          — Note – FDR suffered one of his biggest defeats when he tried expanding the size of SCOTUS by up to 6 members in 1937. Congress slapped his hands and said no. Eleanor warned him not to do it. However, the move did intimidate SCOTUS (apparently) into blocking less of the New Deal. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judicial_Procedures_Reform_Bill_of_1937

      • Small Correction. Very minor :).
Ben Nelson was a Democratic Senator from Nebraska. He left office 4 years ago. He was a very conservative Democrat.
Bill Nelson, former astronaut, is the Senator from Florida up for reelection. His voting record is far less conservative than Ben Nelson’s.

      • DaddyRay

True and anyone they put up after Trump will seem sane (e.g. Mitt)

    • Trump is winning right now.
The Republican Party is delighted with Trump.
Those Republicans who claim that they did not support Trump now say they are changing their tune.
Corker in Tennessee is reportedly considering running for reelection — and ready to kiss Trump’s ass to win his own seat back.
If Democrats think that Trump is a poor candidate, and one that is going to be easily defeated in 2020, they are sorely mistaken. If Dems end up nominating Bernie, Trump will win I think —-
Democrats do not even have the House sewn up this November. They think they do. They do not.

    • Treant

It must be quite the conundrum for them. They can travel out of Russia and get extradited to the USA.

Or they can stay in Russia and know that Putin is just waiting for them to catch a flight, or cross the street, or drink a cup of tea… I honestly don’t think their lives will match the actuarial tables in terms of date of death…at least a few of them.

It bothered my eyes enough that I had trouble watching.

          • -M-

Cersei is not nice. She was humiliated by the Church Militant (The shame nun gifs relate to that.) And they’re a threat to her power. So she blew them up while they were all gathered in the sept*.

Wildfire = Game of Thrones Napalm.

*The Game of Thrones approximation of the Catholic Church has seven gods. Kings Landing is the capital of Westeros (Cersei is watching from the palace.) Baelor’s Sept would be the oldest and most revered in Westeros. Basically she had the Vatican blown up to rid herself of a ‘meddlesome priest’ and his fundamentalist cult/populist insurrection. He had it coming though.

You can’t blame their problems on Amazon. Winn Dixie was mess long before Amazon started selling grocery products Complacent and lack-luster it turned into one of the worst grocery stores you’ve ever seen. Bi-Lo has had several owners, the best was Lone Star Foods from Texas.Winn Dixie buying them was not a good thing. At the moment Bi-Lo stores are very similar to Food Lion but with higher prices. It’s bad news for South Carolina, Bi-Lo is one the largest employer in the state.

    • Winn Dixie is terrible. Their food does not seem fresh, you have to join their stupid program and always have your card ready (or type in your phone number) to get their special “discounts”, and the staff is surly. The stores near here in South Florida seem deserted — everyone goes to Publix. They are old and outdated. Mom claims their deli meats are the best though — she bugs me to go there to buy their ham and roast beef. After Hurricane Irma, the supermarket near here didn’t have power for around a week — they didn’t even invest in generators.

Going through his Twitter stream, there seemed to be a random Old Testament (specifically, Torah) quote every few Tweets or so. I don’t *think* it was in response to anything…but hella weird in any case (even by Christianist standards!)

Does that also apply to when they took Jesus down from the cross and brought him to the tomb?

How white nationalists fooled the media about Florida shooter

“On Wednesday, an anonymous 4chan user posted about receiving a message on Instagram from an ABC News reporter after making a joke suggesting he knew Cruz.

“Prime trolling opportunity,” another user replied.

“You have to take advantage of this,” a third chimed in.”

Whether these posts are real or just a different type of false info that they’re spreading after the fact, it’s extremely sick. They think dead kids is trolling fodder no matter which is true.

      • whollyfool

        Yes.

    • Reality.Bites

To me it seems like they “fooled” people into believing something nearly true. He wasn’t a member of that particular group, but he shared their beliefs

To me it seems their accomplishment was on the level of planting a story that Ted Cruz is the senior senator from Texas and not the junior. Who cares? He’s still Ted Cruz and still a piece of shit.

    • JCF

      On the one hand: wankers.

On the other: if you claim to be the EVIL that you aspire to be…Yay?

Seriously, this is an issue for law enforcement, separating truth from fiction. But if the alt-right is busy stroking themselves over their masturbatory fictions, Who Really Cares?

      • whollyfool

But what I’m worried about is that the news outlets didn’t separate truth from fiction. We need to be able to trust our information.

Of course the shooter is a terrible person and it doesn’t matter what group he subscribed to. But not to be able to trust the reporting on it is terrifying to me. Good information is a requirement for democracy.

    • JT

“A spokesperson for the white supremacist group Republic of Florida
(ROF) told the Anti-Defamation League on Thursday, February 15, that
Nikolas Cruz [….] was associated with his group,” the ADL reported.
The ADL quoted a man named Jordan Jereb, who runs the small group, which is based in Tallahassee.

It seems to have started with a lie by one douchebag (Jereb) which was then spread by other douchebag trolls. I wonder if they checked whether Jereb was in any way a “spokesperson”.

      • whollyfool

Actually that guy was fooled too. He was seen being mad at the perpetrators because he “wasn’t in on it”.

That’s what I meant by not sure how to feel about this. They did such a good job in a day that the fooled the media and themselves. It is chilling to think that we can’t trust our information outlets: how do we get info to make decisions?

        • JT

Where do you get that Jereb was fooled? I can’t find anything supporting that in the Politico post or the ADL post.

The ADL updated post says this:

Jereb said that Cruz was associated with ROF, having been “brought up” by another member. Jereb also claimed that Cruz had participated in one or more ROF training exercises in the Tallahassee area, carpooling with other ROF members from south Florida.

According to that post, Broward County law enforcement says the report is unconfirmed. Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s false.

          • whollyfool

It was from a different article. I read a few trying to get to the bottom of things. I’ll find it again.

Thanks for reading the article! 🙂

          • whollyfool

I found it. It was way way down in the Politico. That’s actually where the scariest stuff is, the detailed accounting of 4chan creating backstory.

“Jereb later seemed to deflect responsibility, calling it all a “legit misunderstanding” because ROF has multiple people named Nicholas.

“You realize I wasn’t in on the prank? You realize I thought the information I was being given was legit?” he wrote on Gab, suggesting that his fellow white nationalists owed him an apology.”

          • JT

I saw that earlier. But that doesn’t mean it was a prank. He’s backpedalling for some reason (fear of the “Feds”?). Where is the Gab piece?

          • whollyfool

There was pretty certainly a prank. Whether he was in on it or not is definitely up for questioning. The problem I have is that almost everything is. That’s my whole point in posting this article. Who is believable? 🙁

          • JT

But why do you think it was a prank? It’s only been described as “unconfirmed” by law enforcement officials in what I’ve seen.

          • whollyfool

From reading the snippets of conversation from the 4channers in the article. But when I say “a” prank I mean just that…. Not sure who exactly they were pranking or what it will turn out to be.

Just to be clear in case that’s part of the issue here, I’m not trying to say the shooter is one of “ours” or one of “theirs”. It doesn’t matter to me whose camp this guy falls into. It’s vile and sad either way.

          • JT

Liars and BSers often call something a “prank” when they don’t want to admit they’ve done something wrong that could land them in hot water. They also do it because they think it makes them look smart. With a lot of dumb people among the wingnuts involved, that would be a likely element.

          • whollyfool

Also I think it’s the job of both law enforcement and the newspapers to get it confirmed or at least do a better job than jut reporting that someone else reported…. :/

          • JT

The problem is sometimes misleading headlines. The ADL post’s headline uses “admits” but the body is much more guarded. This sort of thing happens a lot. It’s unfortunately part of the “clickability” strategy.

          • whollyfool

Yes! And many people only read the headlines. I am trying hard to get out of this habit myself.

I see, so southeastern grocers buys bi-lo, transfers the good assets to their other LLC, Harveys. takes bi-lo into bankruptcy

Great way to not have to sell off the good stuff to pay creditors

I really find LLCs to be insidious

    • Boreal

Insidious for big business who use them for vulture capitalism but for small businesses they provide protection for your personal assets.

      • Tulle Christensen

How about just a rule that a LLC cannot own another company

        • Boreal

That would be a great way to stop this. Each company can only hold one LLC designation, non transferable.
