GOP US House Candidate To Give Away AR-15

The Kansas City Star reports:

A Leavenworth Republican looking to replace U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins in Kansas’ second congressional district is giving away an AR-15 rifle for his campaign — and he has no plans to stop it despite social media pushback in light of Wednesday’s Florida mass school shooting.

Tyler Tannahill, a Marine veteran, on Tuesday posted on his campaign Facebook and Twitter pages: “As an avid sportsman, I’m excited to announce our first AR-15 Giveaway! You can earn multiple entries and no purchase is necessary to win! Enter today!”

Hours after the Florida shooting, Tannahill posted to social media that he and his wife were “heartbroken to learn of the tragedy” and shared a link to a nonprofit program by the Buckeye Firearms Foundation called FASTER. Tannahill said he supports the idea of the training program for educators, adding “I don’t think more laws could have prevented this (the Florida shooting).”

Sadly, it is the way to be elected. Rethugs vote, Democrats do not.

    • Judas Peckerwood

Then how did Hillary get 3 million more votes than Trump? Are you saying that Republicans were voting for her?

      • northern_neighbour

Nah, they, the Repubs, weren’t rooting for Hillary, but rather for keeping the
Archaic Electoral College vote rigging system.

Hillary’s voters were just too stupid
to realize they should not cluster together in Blue states.

If they really had meant to support her properly they should have had
the gumption to move to MI, WI and PA. total s/

        • This really is a problem and won’t be fixed by gerrymandering. I wish some enterprising liberal would move some hi tech businesses to underdeveloped town along major routes in places like Ohio and Pennsylvania. In many of them you could rent space for next to nothing and people starting out could buy a house for a fraction of big city rent. Then there would be a market for services (restaurants, etc.) that hipsters could open, again with low rent (both living and commercial space because these towns are half-empty at the moment.

We complain about gerrymandering, but at the state level we have gerrymandered ourselves. It wouldn’t take that much to create a few thousand jobs in swing states that would attract young, liberal people. (They’d need decent access to major cities without being in them.) Besides who can afford to move to NYC or SF right out of college any more unless the ‘rents are footing the bill?

What an idiot! Does he know that this killer also participated in those nra training programs?

  • We’re treating the Florida tragedy like it’s some magic spell that will automatically weaken our Republican opponents just because we’re saying it. This is politics, not Harry Potter. That doesn’t work.

He’s running right at the Florida thing instead of away from it. As disgusting as that is on a moral level, its also exactly how you repel the kind of attack we’re using right now.

Machiavellian as it sounds, I want you to learn from this and do the same thing when they attack us. When Trump attacks, saying we’re soft on immigrants, the thing to do is not to compromise and defensively retreat. We advance, we attack- we say, “You’re damn right we love immigrants, and we won’t stop fighting or them. Fuck you, read the Statue of Liberty sometime” and then we filibuster every goddamn bill until we get a clean Dream Act.

    Learn from your enemies.

    • ErikDC

Who becomes a new American citizen is of little consequence to me personally, but I could get slain in a mass shooting tomorrow or any other day of the week. Gun control is urgent for me in a way that immigration reform simply is not. I want it to be a higher priority for the Democratic Party.

      • Dramphooey

I’m really disturbed by these stories of people being thrown out of this country that were brought here as children. They don’t know another country. What if you discovered you weren’t born here after all and you came from wherever and they grab you and ship you back to some damned country you don’t even know?

I think we can do two things at once. Frankly, having them on the defensive on two issues is better.

      • Theres no reason why they can’t both be priorities. Listen, we have to work together. Nobody gets to be top dog, we’re all top dog. We can have both- gun control and immigration reform.

We need solidarity. We need to work together.

Who the hell needs an assault rifle to go hunting?

My 70 yr old mother-in-law goes hunting in the woods every fall, and she does it with a single-shot rifle, she waits days in her camouflage blind, and plays fair, never shooting from inside the blind.

        • David Walker

It depends what you’re hunting. You may use your trusty AR-15 to polish off squirrels and “varmints,” but using it on deer and bear still has cleared the legislative hurdle. The thing that the PA legislature hears that the NRA doesn’t is that hunters don’t want ARs for hunting because of safety issues. So you can blow a squirrel or fox or rabbit to smithereens.

An avid “sportsman”? Tell me, what “sport” is an AR15 good for? Other than hunting humans, that is.

    • David Walker

Gaychuckhubby asked if it were legal and the answer is that it’s great sport to an avid sportsman to blast a squirrel to kingdom come via an AR-15. At this point, AR-15s are limited to “varmint hunting.” I suppose that could be your neighbor, but, actually, PA’s Hunting & Fishing Commission polled licensed hunters last year and a majority said they did support legalizing the ARs for hunting. It doesn’t surprise me all that much because safety was the primary concern. Who knows better than hunters the adrenaline rush when you see a deer…and how suddenly you are less aware of your surroundings and what may or may not be behind the deer. I think but am not sure that PA is the remaining hold-out for legalizing said murder weapon, but at the this point Bambi is safe from the AR; the squirrels and other “varmints,” nope.

Thanks for stating that you know Paul Davis.

Please let him know that his website sucks. Two problems:

      1. Where’s his bio? I want to read a few paras about who he is, what he’s done, what made him the man he is today, why he is running, etc. I can’t see it on the website now, and referring me to Facebook etc. is not going to inspire me to contribute.

      2. .pdf contribution form. Some people would rather send a check in the mail. On The View today, Meghan McCain claimed people in “gun country” need assault rifles for hunting. I can’t imagine using one to hunt, or that anyone would “need” one to hunt.

    • She is suckling on the teet of the NRA, that’s been their excuse for legalizing assault rifles for decades. There is no animal that requires an assault rifle to make a clean kill. I come from gun country, I lived in a tiny Alaskan village where everyone hunted. And not a single person had one.

      • Ditto. My mother’s people used shotguns when they went hunting. Still do, those that still go hunting.

      • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

She has been quoted as saying she opposed assault rifles, citing the Gabby Giffords shooting as what changed her mind. But she has flip-flopped and is doing as you say, reciting stock NRA talking points. I suspect she is laying the groundwork for running for office herself.

“Sportsman”? I thought that meant people who run marathons or engage in some other physically challenging sport. More or less like an “athlete”, but more for a hobby. His event is probably the biathlon.

    • McSwagg

The biathlon doesn’t use the AR15. Accuracy is paramount in that sport.

Interesting side note: the idea behind the biathlon (cc ski and shoot) was developed in Finland as a defensive tactic against the Soviet invasion of that country in WWII.
