Trump On Florida Shooting: There Were So Many Signs

The Hill reports:

President Trump on Thursday suggested mental illness played a role in a shooting at a Florida high school that left 17 dead. Trump on Wednesday offered his prayers and condolences to the victims’ families, saying “no child, teacher or anyone else should ever feel unsafe in an American school.” As reports of the death toll came in, a number of Democrats called on Congress to act to curb gun violence, while Republicans shared their thoughts and prayers with the victims and their families.

This morning’s tweet is threaded into Tuesday’s DACA tweet. Trump has tweeted several times since the DACA tweet, so the threading is raising questions.

      Merka, Fuck Yeah!

  • Gustav2

Yes, he was unwell. He wore a MAGA hat.

The Daily Beast interviewed some students about him. This one was notable:

“He always had his hair short. He always wore like really patriotic shirts that seemed really extreme, like hating on the Islamic religion. For example, he would say things such as like, he would degrade islamic people as terrorists and bombers. I’ve seen him wear a Trump hat. I don’t know if he ever said anything about women. He didn’t have any friends,” he said.

    • 🐾vorpal🐾

I know he has deadly weapons, millions of them and he’s repeatedly threatened to use them on others. He’s abused his spouse and many other women. He’s a white male, 6’3″ and weighs about 275lbs. He is balding with orange hair and orange skin. He lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. CAN YOU HELP US?

The UK’s strict gun laws require the police to be satisfied people are “fit” to hold a gun licence.

    For example:
    Intemperate habits
Evidence of aggressive or anti-social behaviour which may include domestic disputes or evidence of hostility likely to lead to violent acts against particular groups categorised by, for example, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion or class.

    Unsound mind
However, a Chief Officer of Police must be alert to any situation where an applicant or existing certificate holder has exhibited, or is exhibiting signs of depression, suicidal tendencies, long-standing or intermittent periods of either emotional instability or unpredictable behaviour.

    • Steve Smith

Its strictly enforced, too. My brother used to hunt, and had a licence to own a shotgun for said purpose. Until he was diagnosed with depression. Then the police took away the permit and the gun very quickly indeed.

      • ChrisMorley

That probably helps explain why we haven’t had any further school shootings since the first, at Dunblane in Scotland, over 20 years ago.

    • 🐾vorpal🐾

All very common sense precautions. If you tried to enact something like that in the US, the NRA would go completely bat-shit crazy screeching that it would be a violation of their Second Amendment rights.

    • canoebum

We have a similar system in New York. After all the background checks: sheriff, State Police, FBI, an Issuing Officer, usually the County Judge, must review all the materials and sign off on a permit (for handguns).

This was 17 children who died yesterday. This is an obscenity but, the real obscenity, the obscenity you won’t hear from the shitgibbon or Republicans is that each day — EACH DAY on average, 96 United States citizens are gunned down. They are not gunned down by terrorists or black lives matter or immigrants trying to make a life better for their families. They are gunned down by right wing terrorists. They are gunned down by people with a chip on their shoulders, by domineering husbands and white supremacists. They are gunned down with gun fetishists with small dicks.

Yeah, the biggest warning sign was that he had a fucking semi assault rifle that has been used in dozens of mass murders in our country. And he owned them legally. That should have been a warning sign, you f*ucking complicit Asshole

  • Dean Gold

    So Many Signs….
THe NRA purchased hundreds of representatives and tens of congressmen. Did someone report that? With all the school shooting carnage, republicans block every effort to study and reduce gun deaths thru public health study of the carnage. Did someone report that? We have a president who bragged about abusing women and has abused an intimate partner. Did we report that? We have a culture which turns a blind eye to intimate partner abuse unless there is a picture of a black eye on a white woman. Did someone report that? We have a president & congressmen that use hate speech against gays, Muslims, brown & black folk. Did someone report that?

    • Ross

      Perfect.

  • Chris H.

I just heard yesterday before this massacre the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act in Congress is starting to get traction again. This would allow gun nuts to conceal carry into states where there is more stricter control of CC.

Just what we need is more guns!

    • canoebum

My (R) representative is a co-sponsor of that insanity. I have written to her office twice to express my strong opposition, as a gun owner, to having people from other states coming into New York, which has sensible gun laws, with however much firepower they can carry. She is, of course, unmoved by the opposition of her constituents.

  • glass

To any authorities reading this, I would like to report this person as mentally disturbed.

So let me get this right, dotard: it’s the fault of the gunman’s friends, family, neighbors, and schoolmates that this tragedy happened.

It couldn’t possibly be completely insane gun laws.

Trump’s usual solution: deflect blame, do nothing, play golf.

    • RJ Bone

      Exactly. First, deflect.

    • JCF

Said it before, will say it again:

Insane people (inc violently insane people) are EVERYWHERE (nowhere are they universally effectively treated).

But violently insane people only COMMIT MASS SHOOTINGS HERE, in the good old U.S. of A. [Except for that one time in Norway]

What the FUCK is wrong w/ us??? WHY do we let the NRA (gun manufacturers, and their junkies) control us???

  • ceeenbee

I am so fucking tired of this “mental health” shit. People have serious mental health issues in every country in the world. What they don’t have in other countries is the unrestricted access to guns we have in this country. When the fake shitgibbon president, the greedy cowards in congress and the russian puppet nra are sent packing, maybe we can have a sane discussion.

    • kareemachan

Yes, but many other countries have actual help for mental care. You know, decent healthcare? And you’re right. They don’t have the access due to effing politicians, the gun industry, and the treasonous NRA.

  • jimbo65

Gee Hillary tried to warn us about a mentally unstable person. But he promised to build a wall, bring back coal, Nazis could come out of the shadows. And on and on….

They talk about mental illness but keep cutting funding to medical care. They can fuck off.

I always thought the NRA’s job was to make the gun industry money. Last I heard, sales are way, way down with Trump in office. I doubt they actually wanted him to win, but it’s not like they could give that thirty million to Hillary’s campaign and give the game away.

  • TexasBoy

So many signs that Donald Trump is mentally disturbed. Lots of bad and erratic behavior. Senators and Congressmen, as well as White House staff know he is a big problem.

    • RJ Bone

Sure. He “passed”. More specifically, he was passed.

  • Tomcat

None of the things you mentioned trump, would have made him ineligible to get the rifle.

  • Mark Abbott

Thank you for you insight Mr. President. It never occurred to anyone that a person that opens fire on unarmed children might have psychological issues. I suspect that your “thoughts & prayers” will replace any attempt at keeping guns out of the hands of such people? Oh no, that’s right. You signed an executive order last year that made it easier for people with “issues” to get their hands on assault weapons. Oh well, at least we still have “thoughts & prayers”.

    • RJ Bone

They play their base so fucking well.

So, bring up a group of people who believe in a all-powerful, supreme overlord who will destroy a population he doesn’t like and reward one he does. Drill it into them.

Do a horrible thing that will give you wealth.

Tell population that you’re all helpless and to appeal to their Imaginary Friend for help.

      Obviously no help comes.

It must, then, be their god’s will for this to be this way. Oh well, who will argue with god?

Confused people are then told that it’s their fault for not p(r)aying hard enough. Oh well maybe next time, if you’re a “good christian” that guy up there somewhere might care. Now where’s my tithe?!

  • Christopher
  • Blueflash

His tweet implies that the mentally disturbed should be preemptively arrested. You’re first, Donald.

  • BartmanLA

It’s almost as if he is trying to mitigate the horrific tragedy yesterday and not even MENTIONING the poor victims or their families that have to wake up this morning with huge holes in their lives and hearts. All he cares about is, that he was “right” to point out these terrible violent incidents are solely due to “mental illness” not that this 19 yr old could go out and purchase a weapon who’s singular and only purpose for war and killing people. This whole “I told you so” mentality he has is really getting tiresome and thin! Compassion and empathy will never be a part of this monster’s life.

    • Ross

In order to express compassion and empathy, one first needs a soul.

  • kareemachan

    Trump: Not big on self-awareness:

So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even

    to authorities, again and again!

  • Cackalaquiano

“Must always report such instances [mentally disturbed] to authorities, again and again!”
AND give them more robust access to guns apparently, since that’s what you did you asshole.

  • BeaverTales

This is bullshit….there are not enough jails or hospitals to lock up every mentally disturbed American, nor put them on meds. No one can monitor everyone who has mental problems. Nothing could have stopped what happened except to restrict access to guns and provide mental health care to everyone who needs it….neither mental health care nor gun control is a Republican priority..

    • RJ Bone

The murderer doesn’t match the conservatives Color-coded List of Evil, so he’s “deeply disturbed” instead.

  • Tomcat

Congress just passed legislation allowing mentally disturbed to have guns, Sooooo?

  • RJ Bone

Gaslighting, Trump? It’s the public’s fault for not reporting him? You’re going with that?!

    Fuck off. You’re cancer incarnate.

  • lymis

There is a certain kind of – let’s call them idiots – who knee jerks from “I personally didn’t know about it” to “Nobody saw any signs and reported it.” or the more general “I wasn’t paying attention, so nobody was trying to do anything about it.”

And they so rarely get called on it. Especially if they’re in positions of power, the media simply ignores it.

  • Chris Baker

Except, as DaddyRay pointed out on another thread:

    Feb. 15, 2017
Congress blocks rule barring mentally impaired from guns
    https://apnews.com/553ff88b

So the NRA wants no one to be barred from having a gun. So wouldn’t matter if people had reported him as mentally unstable.

  • downtownla

What do the Republicans do ? Tell everyone to buy more guns, pray a lot and suck it up — cause it’s only gonna get worse.

the standard rubber stamp GOP response “thought and prayers …mental illness”Well if your mind is set on shooting people you are probably a bit nutz, Aiding this was the GOP clearing disturbed people so them may obtain one and clearing the laws so that AK17 are available No word yet on upgrade of thoughts and prayer however

  • Steve Smith
  • infmom

Oh, so he agrees that white supremacists are mentally unstable? That’s a start.

  • WretchedMouse

Ummm. As someone who spent a good deal of time in behavioral health units in Florida two things came to mind reading this tweet. Just because someone act “squirrelly” does not mean the cops should be called, signs don’t point to something happening. If family and friends wanted to try and Baker Act him there is a good deal of criteria that needs to be met in order to keep his butt on hold for 3 days I think.

Florida does not have the resources to deal with mental illness. I’ve gone to hospitals where they did not have a psychiatrist on staff and had to wait in the ER till one showed up to evaluate me. Even when seen by doctors in the BHU they often did not know how to deal with someone who needed care other than threatening them that if they came in again they would be sent to the Chattahoochee Hospital. *shudder*

I even tried to Baker Act my violent disowned brother and got no where. Just because he was an angry white man isn’t enough, because he hit his ex girlfriends and blacked out doing it isn’t enough, but me being depressed and coming in wanting help is enough. *sigh* Florida is a fucked up place and glad I left.

And again don’t blame this on mental illness. When I sought help and was depressed you know what people did, removed weapons from me so I caused no harm to myself. Crazy concept I know.

    Sorry for the long rant.

  • Robert Adams

“So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed”

But who in the FBI had time to investigate them, because they were all tied up with Hillary’s emails.

  • Ann Kah

Report to WHAT “authorities”? Does anyone have the authority to take a person into custody just because he might commit a violent act in the future? Somebody somewhere sold him a gun. Did they have the right not to sell him a gun because they could read his thoughts?
