American Family Association: No Praying And Too Few Guns Is Why God Allows School Shootings To Happen

AFA radio host Bryan Fischer writes:

I suggest we have mass school shootings because we don’t have enough God on our campuses and we don’t have enough guns. When tragic school shootings happen, like the one in Florida, everyone sends their “thoughts and prayers” to the families of the victims. But why don’t we pray before these shootings happen instead of waiting until somebody’s dead?

Everyone understands that prayer in school is appropriate in the wake of a tragedy like this. But if it’s appropriate after, there’s no reason it’s not appropriate before.

We have spent the last 60 years telling God to get lost from our public schools. It should come as no surprise that he’s not around when we need him. We can’t very well blame God for not coming to our aid if we fail to use the tools (prayer and the Second Amendment) He has graciously given to us.

  • Will Parkinson

Fuck you, you worthless piece of shit. Your ‘god’ is as impotent as you are.

    • leastyebejudged

Apparently not if it elicited a reaction like that out of you , currently they both have all sorts of control and authority over you thanks to your friends in the media that make sure you know all about it !

      • dukeofhurl

        Fuck off.

        • Robincho

I’ve no idea what the least infection said, having blocked it long ago. But I commend your proper response to it…

          • dukeofhurl

I can paste it if you’d like to wallow through the dredge. You’re better off… I think I’ll block it as well. And your comment was spot on.

      • ZRAinSWVA

“It” did not elicite a reaction. “Its” followers statements and stance did. The distinction is important and readily evident. Your response, not so much.

Said in the last thread and I’ll say it again.

    Evangelicals:

“Gays are getting married, we need to amend the constitution to stop this!”

“Abortion is murder, we need a constitutional amendment to stop it!”

“Kids are getting slaughtered in schools…..¯_(ツ)_/¯….thoughts and prayers”

    • bkmn
      • Pollos Hermanos

        Oooooh he said it better.

Wish I’d have seen that before.

      • Moebym of the Returners

For the last four, the reason people don’t care more is because the victims tend to be POC Americans or foreigners in “shithole” countries.

      • Nowhereman

I would add wife-beating to that list, too. Men like him counsel battered wives to stay in the marriage, for the children of course…

        • Falconlights

Did you hear that the Russian Duma passed a law allowing husbands to beat their wives? It shows what a sick society the have. And yes, the Russian Orthodox Church is behind this as well.

          • Nowhereman

            Wow, but I’m not surprised.

          • Falconlights

I’m not surprised in the least. When I was at a couple of Russian Orthodox women’s monasteries, I was told by the superiors that, if said monasteries, I could be beaten for my “impertinence” (basically, refusing to put up with nonsense).

      • Jeani

        Beautiful Gino! SO TRUE!

    • Nowhereman

That’s about it. I’d like to see him put his thoughts and prayers where the sun don’t shine.

      • Captain Jack

I’d like to put HIM where the sun don’t shine

    • SkokieGuy / Larry / Uncle Lar’

I am atheist, I don’t pray. But Brian and his people do, right? So therefore if insufficient prayers are the cause of the mass murder of children, it is Brian Fischer and his followers fault for prayer inadequacy.

SO how to you explain the church mass shootings, Einstein?

  • Proud MOFO Beaner (bkb)
  • So, if “God” is “allowing” these shootings to happen, do we have “Satan” to thank for Mr. Fisher?

    • RaygunsGoZap

      Checkmate, Christians!

Of course, “God allows Satan to conduct these shootings” is the Holy Loophole.

    • Nowhereman

To paraphrase Dr. Hofstader, “Needy god, greedy god.”

  • William

There are plenty of countries that don’t have prayer in school and they do not have school massacres every week.

    • Cuberly Deux

…as in the vast majority of them.

    • Nowhereman

Legally. we don’t have prayer in our public schools either. It doesn’t stop so-called christians in “shithole” states of course.

    • FAEN

We don’t need no stinkin facts

    • 2patricius2

And I’m sure that a lot of those kids and their parents were praying up a storm when the shootings were going on. Lack of organized prayer never stopped anyone from praying. It just keeps achools from forcing the prayer of one religious group on everyone else.

    • SFBruce

All the other modern democracies that don’t have regular mass killings going on? I’m pretty sure it’s not because they have lots of guns and do a lot of praying.

    • prixator

But, the U.S.A. is gawd’s “chosen” ! Gawd don’t care about anyone but you Amurcans, so if you don’t behave, he gonna punish you BAD!

    • Jeani

Yes, because their societies don’t allow rampant GUNS! We need an assault weapons ban again! It worked pretty well the last time! And bullets need to cost much more, and guns need to be registered and there needs to be long jail penalties for owning a gun that isn’t registered to you!

      • William

Absolutely. Add to that a national gun buyback program.

  • Mark Née Fuzz

Oh, and God is only a figment of your imagination. So there’s that.

    • Nowhereman

      It’s their big money maker.

  • bkmn
  • pch1013
  • Kissmagrits

Obsequious praying to a capricious “Sky Bitch” with hot flashes? Second Amendment solutions?….Derpity, derp, derp!

  • Moebym of the Returners

What I want to say would get me banned for life.

So I’ll say this: your God must be a real callous piece of shit to allow the blood of innocents to flow because he feels he isn’t getting enough praise. Since that’s the God you worship and not a God of mercy, you shouldn’t wonder why more and more people are renouncing religion altogether.

    • pch1013

His god is a demented sociopath. And so is he.

    • Nowhereman

Well this is the same “god” who sent out his holy warriors to run pregnant women through with a spear, so…

You make god sound like a republican. (shudder) Even worse, god’s starting to sound like the fucking moron.

    • AllesK

What really struck me, listening to the students today, was the one girl who was so grateful “God” had her on the other side of campus and kept her & her friends safe. She’s young, but still — what a hateful way to think.

  • another_steve

I have prayed that Fischer find himself in bed with Sarah Huckabee Sanders. A fate worse than death.

    O Lord, answer my prayer.

    • Cuberly Deux

One of the podcasts I listen to cast Sanders as an alien war lord from another planet. It’s a pretty funny bit they do….it’s been the only way I can laugh at her.

      • another_steve

I’ve been calling around. Straight and gay friends. I’m retired and have lots of free time.

I’ve concluded this, based on all the feedback:

Sarah Huckabee Sanders has single-handedly turned 64.8 percent of the United States male population gay.

        • Cuberly Deux

Ah, another survey from Another_Steve Polling and Jared-Stalking LLC

    • Todd Allis

Hugs if you like. We’ll be here.

God[s] is/are present on all school campuses. One need only be present during any exam or pop quiz to see how the prayers are offered by students. What he means is that schools are no longer allowed to impose some Christian mythology on all students whether they are associated in any fashion with that sect.

As for guns on campus, the worst thing I can think of is a bunch of kids and teachers walking around armed to the teeth. The resulting carnage is beyond comprehension.

“Everyone understands that prayer in school is appropriate in the wake of a tragedy like this.”

I reject your premise. Prayer is never appropriate in public schools.

    • Nowhereman

I agree. I grew up in the 50s and 60s. I learned the Pledge without “under god” in it, and I refused to say it after they added it in 57 (or thereabouts)

  • April

It’s because “thoughts and prayers” works just a well beforehand as afterward.

    It does absolutely nothing.

    • Nowhereman

I don’t get how religion is not considered a mental illness

  • Karl Dubhe

I’m pretty sure there was a lot of prayer in that school. As with the other schools where such prayers happened, the bullets were not stopped by them.

Fuck you and your god, brian…

    • Nowhereman

And buybulls are worthless for stopping cop killer bullets.

  • JackFknTwist

I just heard a spokesman from Breitbart on the BBC.
“Arm the teachers….they can carry concealed weapons.”

So ‘think of the children’ only amounts to more arms in the classroom. Why not arm all the kids as well ?
Kids have rights to protect themselves.
Has the right wing become the enemy within?

It is this kind of insanity that has made the USA the only country in the world which specializes in killing children.
Meanwhile the treason of the NRA in funneling $30 million of Russian money to Trump/turd has gone unanswered.

  • Bambino

Scum like that continue to profit off tragedies from others. That is not a religion deserve of a tax break. That is a cult that need to be criminalize.

  • Nowhereman

Oh shut the fuck up, Bryan. This has nothing to do with supernatural beings. This is a problem created by and perpetuated by HUMAN beings.

  • Moebym of the Returners

Get a load of what one parent said:

I don’t want to get into a gun debate. I really don’t. What are you going to do? Confiscate everybody’s guns? We have millions and millions of weapons … I’m a gun owner. I don’t want the government taking my gun.

17 kids were killed by a boy with a gun, and this parent’s main concern is that the gov’t. will take all the guns away. Talk about massively misplaced priorities!

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/feb/15/how-the-florida-high-school-shooting-unfolded-students-gunman

    • Karl Dubhe

Keep your gun, lose your kid?

Well, good to know that the parent has their priorities ‘straight’. I thought the point to having kids was to have a legacy, guess not.

      • djcoastermark

Fisher is right on schedule. Tell you what, when we can point a holy thinga-ma-boober at a school and know if the hand of god is there or not and correlate with mass shootings, get back to me. Other wise this is yet another special pleading for everyone else to follow their religion on unfounded and unprovable assumptions.

So RW commentors, are you going to castigate Fisher for ‘too soon’? Or will yall be oddly silent about the rightingers pushing their politics and their god in response to this round of killing?

We need to push the Democratic Party to run on gun control, especially at the state level. Then we need to hold them accountable.

This is doable. Universal background checks, banning sales to violent criminals, banning sales to convicted stalkers, and banning sales to people deemed dangerous by mental healthcare providers are all incredibly popular policy positions, and banning assault rifles and/or all semi-automatics has support well north of 50% nationally.

Blue states are going to have to lead the way. And California, Massachusetts, and New York have already proven that it can be done. So it’s time to lean on more blue states.

    Joni Ernst $ 3,124,273
    Rob Portman $ 3,061,941
    Cory Gardner $ 3,819,064
    Bill Cassidy $ 2,861,047
    John McCain $ 7,740,521

    • Treant

Even Saint Bernie used to take NRA donations.

    • Taylor Bixler

Relative to other sectors (pharma, energy) that is not a big number, sadly enough. I increasingly think that while the money does not hurt most likely, the anti new gun control folks are that way because they believe it, not necessarily because of the money the NRA gives them. Not saying there is zero impact, to be clear. But I honestly think fundamental reasons are much more tribal than that on some level.

Seriously, how can people shoot people without guns? Gun control is the

Why the fuck does God always kill people that are NOT RESPONSIBLE for what he’s supposedly pissed off about.

He did the same thing at Passover…he killed the innocent first born….when it was the Pharaoh that was responsible for keeping the Jews in bondage!!

I have been thinking about this all day, and I’m no closer to a solution than I was this morning. I think there are at least three factors at play here even if we take some of the new developments like Trump and Russian donations to the NRA out of the equation.

The first two we have talked about ad nauseam today so I won’t elaborate. One is campaign contributions, and the second is lax gun laws. We all know they go hand and hand, and I have no solutions other than to vote Blue.

The third is gun culture. It ties into so many triggers for the psyche including masculinity, “heritage,” and an almost cave man-esque desire to protect the things men prize (mate, children, property). I say men because at this point we are not seeing female mass shooters and far fewer women, though they certainly exist, have the same gun obsession. I’m fascinated by the emotional and mental chasm between men who have this worship of guns versus those who do not. I see it in stark relief every day.

My dad is a gun nut, and my husband is not. My dad (R*) has a moral code I both respect and despise. He would give every dime and his own life for one of his kids and his family, but he says awful, horrible things that just blow my mind. Granted this is mostly since my mom’s death, so I give some leeway I wouldn’t otherwise tolerate. He is small in stature, but puffs up like a Banty Rooster to prove something that never demanded explanation let alone evidence. He has two Mexican and one African-American grandchildren on whom he absolutely dotes, but he is all for a boarder wall and uses such pejorative terms that I am embarrassed to know him. He is rash and quick to anger. His first reaction to a perceived slight is to crow about how he would fight or shoot someone. I have heard his friends say similar foolish things when we all know they solve problems with money rather than fists. These are the men who worship guns because they hide their insecurities behind a faux symbol of masculinity. These guns may not make them bigger or better men, but they do make them deadly. I once asked my dad why he opposes gun control. He told me most people getting shot deserve it. He couldn’t answer me about Sandy Hook.

My husband (D*) is a giant of a man. In his youth he had to be encouraged to defend himself because he was afraid of hurting his bullies. He is a gentle soul for all his size. Somewhere in a closet he has a shot gun that was once his grandfather’s. I’m sure I’ve seen it but couldn’t tell you when. He doesn’t have to show it to his friends or threaten the neighbors. He knows who he is and that he can protect his home like sensible people by making choices to install an alarm, call the police if necessary, and simply lock the damn doors which my dad never does.

I may have lost the plot somewhere, but my point was supposed to be that in my area, there are far more men like my dad than my husband. I fear actual revolt if someone tried to part them from their guns. I don’t know if the Australian gun buy back program could work here because of all the emotion tied into owning these phallic substitutions.

Just thoughts. Sorry so long and rambling.

      Thanks for posting, Gretchen.

“These are the men who worship guns because they hide their insecurities behind a faux symbol of masculinity.”

      Ding!

  • Generic Commenter

I’ve actually heard God is agnostic on the ‘school shooting’ issue

    • Gretchen

So he doesn’t know what to do either?

      • Generic Commenter

        He doesn’t exist

        • Gretchen

I believe you are correct. Just thinking about how the word agnostic is basically Latin for “No-Know.”

  • AstroCat

Prayer is NOT appropriate before OR after a tragedy you fucking douchetwit. Legislation BEFORE the tragedy is appropriate.

  • acde

Someone needs to remind Bryan [isn’t that a gay spelling of Brian?] that god [if s/he exists] helps those that help themselves. In case you don’t understand what that means: it is to use the most effective things at hand/in mind/available to change the course of disaster[s] in our lives. Gun control – when I last heard – is more effective than thoughts and prayers. This has been demonstrated in almost every other country in the world. Available mental health care for all and education for all also ranks way up there.

  • TheManicMechanic

Time to start shooting people like Fischer. Put all these guns to a good use for a change.

    • Gretchen

I understand you are frustrated but calling for shooting people even if you aren’t being literal is a step too far. You might want to edit or delete.

  • teedofftaxpayer

I’ll bet dollars to donuts he’s a member of the NRA.

    • BobSF_94117

Member? He probably gets a cut.

  • ted-

He has one fucked up shitty ass motherfucking god to allow this.

  • coram nobis

Others want to send thoughts and prayers; he wants to send guns and prayers.

BTW, there’s no 2nd Amendment in the New Testament, and that’s not what Jesus meant by “blessed are the Peacemakers.”

  • coram nobis

PILATE: So, you dared to waid us, eh? What’s your name?
    BRIAN: Brian, sir.
    PILATE: Bwian, eh?
    BRIAN: No, sir. Brian.
PILATE: Stwike him, centuwion! Vewwy wuffly!

Kids can pray internally all they want. Any teacher that prays in fronts of my kid is looking for a lawsuit.

If teachers have guns, they may be tempted to use them against the kids.

trump’s statement that kids are not alone is total bullshit. Bullied kids ARE alone as the schools do NOTHING to help them. Is trump willing to protect LGBT kids? Based on his policies, I’d say no and that makes him full of shit.

  • andrew

These right wing extremists are so stupid that they don’t seem to realize that their own words tell the world the evil monster that their God Yahweh is.

  • FlKeysKevin

“Everyone understands that prayer in school is appropriate in the wake of a tragedy like this…”

No!!! Prayer is NEVER appropriate in school, unless it’s a school run by a church!

  • -M-

What a liar. The only restriction on school prayer is that public schools and their employees can’t tell people how to pray or provide them as a captive audience for anyone to proselytize. And the second amendment has been perverted by the gun seller’s lobby.

    • -M-

Thirdly, we also have the first amendment’s right to petition the government for a solution, like sensible gun laws, as another more appropriate tool to use.

  • Silver Badger

I have no problem with prayer in school as long as they give equal time to Thor and Allah.

  • liondon#iamnotatraitor

Shut up Bryan don’t you have some gay kids to harass?

  • Richard B

True to his reputation, the American Family Association (AFA)’s spokesman, Bryan Fischer (White Haired Man) got this wrong.
His market is the highly superstitious low information voter and to see those people manipulated by a group that sells gun loving “family values” is wrong. Bryan Fisher is fueled by huge donations from big money gun manufacturers whose only goal is to sell more guns and ammunition. This is a purely a business play by completely amoral gun lobby, who in turn hire crazy as a loon White Hared Man’s as their salesman.

  • Raising_Rlyeh

Such a spiteful and puny god that apparently won’t do jack-shit if it’s ego isn’t constantly stroked.

    • Well, that’s amply demonstrated in their own sacred text.

  • I dare say many of those kids are were braver than Bryan would be in a similar situation.

  • TampaZeke

I’m sure this will be a shocking revelation to Denmark, Sweden and Norway.

  • EqualityForAll

Public schools are no places for guns or prayer.

  • Mike Knife

PSYCH MEDS ARE THE REASON FOR THE SHOOTINGS..

    • Ann Kah

Do you know if he was on psych meds? Would he have killed them all if he didn’t have a gun, a weapon of WAR, not a civilian toy phallic symbol.

  • Robincho

It’s amazing to me how frequently people misspell “Fissure”…

  • eddiebeskeddie

I never once prayed for god to go away. I pray for assholes like you bryan fisher to go away – obviously prayer doesn’t work.

  • Steve Smith

I attended school in England. There was a christian service every morning. By the age of 12 we were almost all convinced atheists. Moronic pompous ignorant bronze-age twaddle.

  • Gianni

God and guns and glory. Where have we heard that connection before? More tripe from a sanctimonious creep. God, God, God, oh and we need a little more God.

  • Falconlights

No, Bry-Bry, this has NOTHING to do with school prayer. it has to do with lax gun laws, along with a “president” who signed an EO making it possible for mentally-ill individuals to purchase guns. There is no reason except greed to sell assault weapons. Add to that a mentally-ill person for whom there really is not the help available that they need. All that spells is disaster.
But, hey, Bry-Bry, go ahead and blame a lack of prayer in the public schools, though if you have even a shred of decency, you’ll admit that you’re talking B.S.

  • ETownCanuck
  • rednekokie

Just another subversive organization, same as NRA, throwing in their own two cents worth of hatred, as usual.

  • carlstrauser

Dickface trying to stay relevant at any costs says what?

  • Petrina Harley

We don’t have prayers in public schools in Australia and we certainly have fewer guns and yet, no school massacres!!

  • Bob Horne

Great comments. I sincerely hope you are all registered to VOTE?

  • Jeani

The so called American Family Association is a known hate group, that uses their false religion to try to bring their CULTIST horrific ideas to the mainstream. You know what would stop shootings you AFA morons? Less guns. Assault weapons bans. Prayer has done absolutely NOTHING. We are not in your cult and don’t want to be. We have actual thinking brains and will use them. Can’t say the same for evildoing idiots like YOU!

  • Russell Brown

You stupid people. There is no god. There is only what goes on in your mind that those in power tricked you into believing. The rest you made up to protect what you slaved away for those above you, and now think what’s left belongs to you. You own nothing when you are born. You will die with nothing other than what you were born with. You made it up by allowing absolute mongrels force you into a belief that doesn’t exist; purely so you will slave your life away for them.
