BREAKING: Mass Shooting At South Florida High School

An early report:

Police and other emergency services in Florida are responding to reports of an active shooter at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. There are reports of multiple victims. The incident began just after 2:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday when officers were called to reports of a shooting at the high school, which is located on Pine Island Road.

“Avoid area of Douglas HS for active police scene. Do not call 911 unless an emergency,” Coral Springs Police said in a tweet, adding: “Do not attempt to get to the school this perimeter is LOCKED down.” Footage from the scene shows multiple people being treated by paramedics.

I don’t have kids but I feel for every parent who sends their kids off to school in the morning.

What a fuckin’ fucked-up world this is.

    • SkokieGuy

Spouses of police officers talk about kissing their spouse goodbye in the morning and never being sure they will come home at night. Who ever thought that parents must now live with that same fear.

      • another_steve

None of us should ever take our loved ones for granted. Never.

Not to be morbid, but the other week there was a horrific traffic accident near where my husband and I live. A woman was on her way to the supermarket. An approaching driver lost control of his car, crossed over the line and collided with her, killing her instantly.

Never ever take a loved one for granted, people.

        • SkokieGuy

Car accidents have been around for a long time, but daily mass shootings weren’t the norm until recently.

          • another_steve

It’s so complicated. Obviously, easy access to firearms by people who shouldn’t be permitted to own them is a major cause of the uptick in these mass shootings. There are other causes too imo.

Glorification of violence. Kids are growing up today playing their “shoot the cops” video games and becoming numb to gun violence. Hollywood makes millions selling violent films that glorify killing, further numbing us.

Inadequate mental health services in the U.S. Potentially violent and sick people in need of help but not receiving it.

Just a few of the reasons that come to mind.

          • SkokieGuy

The shoot em up games are just as popular in other countries..

Honestly I think the massive prescription drugging of kids, especially boys, plays into this. Isn’t it around a third on meds for ADD, depression, etc.? Suicidal thoughts are a known side effect.

          • another_steve

            Excellent point, SG.

Just as with erectile dysfunction drugs (now widely and brazenly marketed as recreational drugs), the pharmaceutical industry – one of the most corrupt and out-of-control industries in the United States – is making billions getting doctors to over-prescribe those kid medications.

Parents love those meds. Gives them some peace and quiet. Doctors love them. Another office visit or two, more revenue for them.

          • CanuckDon

I didn’t know that but it certainly makes sense considering the pressure on young American males to become the masculine ideal.

Replace “world” with “country” for greater accuracy please

    • Gregory B

This is beyond sad. My niece is a third year student at UMASS in Amherst. Our greatest fear is that there could be a shooting on campus and that she could be a victim. I wish there was a way to stop mass shootings but when it comes to the “right to bare arms”, the inmates are running the asylum. Does anybody remember the movie “Minority Report”? it was a few years ago but the premise is that everyone’s thoughts were monitored by the police and crimes were prevented, perpetrators arrested before the crime could take place.Perhaps that is what it will take to stop these horrible, horrible crimes. Thoughts and prayers are meaningless and from what I can see, most Americans are numb until one of their loved ones is murdered or injured and there is a ripple of something for a few days until the numbness reasserts itself as people try to forget and get on with life.

      • another_steve

        Very well-said, Gregory.

        Very.

Southern Florida. The right is probably already blaming illegals.

And the NRA is quietly rejoicing as this will juice gun sales.

    • JWC

its time to brand the NRA as an internal terrorist group

      • SkokieGuy

Agreed! Considering they both use fear the directly promotes domestic terrorism AND is seems that they are a funnel for illegal campaign financing, I think long jail terms are appropriate.

The last (and only) British school shooting was over 20 years ago at Dunblane in Scotland.
We learnt the hard lessons and two new Firearms Acts were passed, which greatly restricted private ownership of firearms in Great Britain.

This is happening because the unelected, unaccountable NRA has a total stranglehold on gun policy.

    Isn’t democracy grand?

    • madknits

It isn’t democracy, it’s plutocracy. And as long as corporations and entities like the NRA have as protected speech the ability to give money to political groups, the politicians will not listen to the people who elect them but to the people who line their bank accounts. While the vast majority of people want Congress to do something about gun control. However, voting has been trumped by contributions. The NRA wants more guns out there, and is willing to pay for it.

The school is named after Marjory Stoneman, an early enviromental activist in the area.

    From Wikipedia:

“Marjory Stoneman Douglas (April 7, 1890 – May 14, 1998) was an American journalist, writer, feminist, and environmentalist known for her staunch defense of the Everglades against efforts to drain it and reclaim land for development. Moving to Miami as a young woman to work for The Miami Herald, Douglas became a freelance writer, producing over a hundred short stories that were published in popular magazines. Her most influential work was the book The Everglades: River of Grass (1947), which redefined the popular conception of the Everglades as a treasured river instead of a worthless swamp; its impact has been compared to that of Rachel Carson’s influential book Silent Spring (1962). Her books, stories, and journalism career brought her influence in Miami, which she used to advance her causes.

Even as a young woman Douglas was outspoken and politically conscious of many issues that included women’s suffrage and civil rights. She was called upon to take a central role in the protection of the Everglades when she was 79 years old. For the remaining 29 years of her life she was “a relentless reporter and fearless crusader” for the natural preservation and restoration of the nature of South Florida.[1] Her tireless efforts earned her several variations of the nickname “Grande Dame of the Everglades”[2] as well as the hostility of agricultural and business interests looking to benefit from land development in Florida. Numerous awards were given to her, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and she was inducted into several halls of fame.

Douglas lived until age 108, working until nearly the end of her life for Everglades restoration. Upon her death, an obituary in The Independent in London stated, “In the history of the American environmental movement, there have been few more remarkable figures than Marjory Stoneman Douglas.”

Trump is so grateful that once again another act of terrorism has saved him from watching media stories about his Russian collusion, Stormy Daniels, Porter, domestic abuse & Trump’s misogyny, DACA, ICE abuses, security clearance & vetting problems, and Cabinet corruptions.

  • BeaverTales

The wikipedia article on school shootings in the USA is far longer than the one on school shootings in the rest of the world combined. What surprised me most is that there have been more shootings in the past 18 years in the USA than in the rest of the world combined over the past century. Thousands of kids never got the chance to grow up and many more physically injured or otherwise traumatized..

  • Blake J Butler

Well I was going to post naughty tweet pics, but now I feel it’s deemed inappropriate because ammosexuals have once again caused another shooting, ruining the mood. Someone who shouldn’t have come near a firearm to begin with. Let alone have one.

Just another day in NRA ‘murika! Thoughts and prayers, as usual!

  • JoeMyGod
  • Boreal

What can be said? Another day, another shooting in murica. Sounds callous but at this point I just don’t give a shit any more. If I am shot, I’ll be dead, end of story. I don’t have kids so I don’t have to worry about them. Florida voters elected republican dominated state government and now reap the rewards of it.

    • AJayne

Can’t imagine what difference that would make – an actual Congressman got shot, and they still did nothing…

      ETA: Two, in fact . . .

    • Joe, the trolls are beginning to show up. Gonna need some active moderation here, I think.

    • j.martindale

I understand why you say this. However, it was the pictures of the blood and gore and suffering of Vietnam that led people to rise up against the war. Since then, the military has corralled the press to prevent them from understanding that bombs rip bodies apart, and guns mangle and deface human beings, because they know it undercuts public support. To be honest, if the kids’ bodies from Sandy Hook had been plastered all over the front pages of our papers, perhaps we would not be reliving this tragic Ground Hog Day episode year after year. I wouldn’t have the heart to do that to the parents and family member of the Sandy Hook kids, but rethugs and NRA members evidently have no empathy or compassion. Perhaps seeing the consequences of their inhumanity might bring them around.

      • JCF

IF the parents/survivors of victims of gun violence wish to do this, that’s their call. But no one else’s.

        • j.martindale

I hope they someday decide to expose the cruelty for what it is.

        • JaniceInToronto

Give it a bit more time and there won’t -be- anyone else.

      • DN

Louie gohmnert felt no shame whatsoever in describing those kids’ injuries in order to advance the narrative that all teachers should be armed.

We’re in an asymmetrical battle here… our side has dignity and theirs doesn’t. And they’ll win because we keep trying to set a good example…

Already seeing people talk about the church shooting in Texas and how two good guys with guns stopped the shooter.
Problem was he had already killed everyone that he wanted to.
They didn’t stop a damn thing in that case.
The notion we have to arm everyone in order to stop these things angers me to no end.
How about we make it harder for these guns to be available?

A nation of masochists. Let’s suffer some more.

  • 19 school shootings in 2018 alone. That’s one every 2.4 days. Or if we just count school days, that’s one every 1.8 days.

    America is sick and dying.

    • Paladin SF

      19?

Only if you count a bb gun discharge as a school shooting.

        • Paladin SF

          Nope, real facts:

This broad definition places two separate suicides, a January 9 incident where a man shot a BB gun at a bus window resulting in no injuries; a January 10 incident where a student in a criminal justice club accidentally shot a peace officer’s real gun at a target on a classroom wall instead of a training gun resulting in no injuries; a January 9 incident where gun shots were fired from somewhere outside of Cal State San Bernardino

          • The_Wretched

As you have no idea where the 19 come from, you’re the expected NRA troll here to tar up the comments section with debates on irrelevant minutia.

The facts here are clear. The US is unique in the gun death rates. Full stop. Limited to no license requirements, easy gun access, easy ammo access and extremely limited background checking, limited (by law) recordation of harms or tracking etc are the problem. Other places with a more mature system do not have mass killings. Further, mass killings rates have not dropped with the increase in gun ownership.

Those are facts and I’m not open to debate on them.

          • Paladin SF
          • Natty Enquirer

Actually, the U.S. ranks behind several South and Central American countries in gun death rates.

          • The_Wretched

            OK, absent drug wars….

          • Paladin SF

I would remind you that the right to own guns is a Constitutional right.

How difficult would you like to make it?

          • Lizard

Oh, fuck you. Read the Constitution sometime.

          • Paladin SF

I have as well as Heller.

          • Lizard

Ah yes, Heller. Then I suppose you’ll recall reading “Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose: For example, concealed weapons prohibitions have been upheld under the Amendment or state analogues. The Court’s opinion should not be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms. Miller’s holding that the sorts of weapons protected are those “in common use at the time” finds support in the historical tradition of prohibiting the carrying of dangerous and unusual weapons. Pp. 54–56.” (emphasis mine)

            Fuck off, NRA shill.

          • Paladin SF

So this person had a permit to carry a gun at the school?

          • The_Wretched

so this person is likely a right wing conservative who believes in violence as a solution

          • Lizard

In addition to the possible tragic loss of life and injuries, this shooting will no doubt push the numerous Trump scandals off the headlines of the MSM. This morning I counted three Drumpf administration scandals dominating the headlines on the Washington Post’s website.

I’m beginning to wonder whether one of the reasons the rethuglicans are so dead set against even sensible, common sense gun regulations is because these endless mass shootings might afford them convenient major distractions from their endless scandals. smh

    • Lizard

If that’s the case, they’re overdoing it. Even decent, empathetic people are becoming inured to the shock.

      • Tempus Fuggit

        That’s the point.

        • Lizard

That’s a crappy point if they’re trying to have mass shootings push Trump scandals out of the headlines. Most mass shootings aren’t even newsworthy anymore.

    • canoebum

If mass shootings are inevitable, why is it there is never one someplace useful, like CPAC or a GOP policy retreat? I mean, if bunches of people are going to continue to be shot, why not at least let it be some of the ones fucking up the country? Leave the kids alone.

My stupid high school Economics teacher invited three different branches to give talks to my class during class time on the last three days of school after the final exam. We have a similar thing in Brit schools for posh kids only – Officers Training Corps, but no guns, just uniforms and lots of drill.
It’s the armed forces’ sneaky desensitising recruiting ground for the Officer class.
Ordinary kids just enlist as privates when they can’t get a job.

      Eww, you’re watching Fox News?

      • Sam_Handwich

the first link i came across. Shep SMith is on, so it’s pretty tolerable

        • Rambie

Guys, I think we need an intervention on Mr Handwich. He’s starting to turn! 😉

        • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Dont look at the tv! Turn away before the fox news mind ray turns u into a republican replicant!

        • Tread

At least Shep Smith is a self-aware asshat, knowing he works with a bunch of other douches.

    • Cuberly Deux

“gun nut” Obviously not Fox’ words.

  • Boreal
    • eddiebeskeddie

I hope the guy holding this card was arrested – just look at the color of that thumb!

  • David

Apparently the shooter is a white male.
Fox News will soon move onto screaming at Obama & Hillary and forget the entire event ever happened.

    • DaddyRay

I am sure there are some Natalee Holloway updates to report

    • JCF

If the shooter’s name is indeed Cruz, they’ll probably find a way to make it about immigrants (brown immigrants).

  • JoeMyGod
    • Gustav2

      You are not doing shit.

    • DaddyRay

Now we know the shooter is white otherwise he would have called him a terrorist

    • fuzzybits
    • JCF

“law enforcement on the terrible Florida school shooting”

You POS, “law enforcement” can only deal w/ the down-the-road AFTERMATH of a shooting! It does nothing to alter it in the present!

  • Ninja0980

Some of the people on Trump’s tweet about this are already blaming Democrats, gun free zones, taking prayer out of school etc.
    Anything but their precious guns.

    • Gustav2

If they voted for a NRA sponsored politician, it is their fault.

  • JoeMyGod
    • DaddyRay

How horrific – my heart goes out to the parents, family, friends and teachers

  • Bambino

To this asshole administration and the evil enablers in the congress. Right this moment not a fucking word please!

I like hairy men. I’m fem and fairly hairless.

      I like hairy men.

      • Ben in Oakland

The Jared is smooth as silk. what will you do?

        • another_steve

          Bi, here.

          Smooth men. Hairy men.

          • Ben in Oakland

I’m tri, myself. I’ll tri anything.

          • another_steve

            Thank you.

I used to occasionally exhibit discretion.

I’m too old for that now.

          • Gregory B

Discretion is overrated. Unless of course we are talking about nuclear codes…

          • Gregory B

There are too many attractive men of every shape, size, colour, to limit myself to a type. Of course there have been more than a few occasions when WTFWIT?! occurs but that, mes chers, is life.

          • another_steve

I tell my friends that I’m “omni-gay sexual.” There is absolutely no male physical type that I find unattractive. No color, ethnicity, shape or girth. Nothing.

Perhaps I’m a rare bird here, I don’t really know.

          • Ben in Oakland

I believe the species of bird is Whorus Americanus, but I’m no ornithologist.

          • another_steve

            “Whorus Americanus” LMAO!

            I’m bookmarking that.

          • Ben in Oakland

Glad you liked it. Birds of a feather, and so forth. 😜🤪😉

          • Ben in Oakland

I agree. My two questions are: do I find him attractive? And is he interested in me?

All rhetorical these days, being married and all.

          • another_steve

            Marriage.

            The killer of sex.

          • Ben in Oakland

Tell me about it. Worse tHan watching heterosexuals go at it.

  • greenmanTN

Usually these shooters commit suicide. I wonder what excuse this little POS is going to have for assassinating several (numbers aren’t in yet) of his classmates?

    • Lizard

I’m sure he has a manifesto and we’ll hear all about it for the next week or so, after which it will be promptly forgotten.

      • Jerry Kott

It could something so simple as not getting a Valentine. The threshold for madness is so low.

      • another_steve

“…and we’ll hear all about it for the next week or so, after which it will be promptly forgotten.”

So true. In a sick way, it’s like that with the daily Trump scandals.

The first story on the reputable cable news stations, and then forgotten.

    • Ninja0980

No excuse will be good enough.
And even if he was bullied, still no excuse and in the end, it will have accomplished nothing other then him rotting in prison for the rest of his life.

      • greenmanTN

I agree with you completely; there is no excuse.

    • safari

Twitter is atweet with motives and a name. And different pictures of the alleged shooter.

    • JCF

I’ll have my rage for the shooter eventually.

Right now, I’m FAR more upset re the SYSTEMATIC nature of these constant mass shootings. There are insane and/or asshole people EVERYWHERE. They only commit mass shootings HERE, in ‘Merka. F’yeah!

Trump July 21, 2016 , I assume he will be resigning from the office today .

Painting a grim picture of America, Donald Trump promised to protect the country and restore “law and order” by putting “America First” in his address Thursday evening formally accepting the GOP nomination for president.

“Americans watching this address tonight have seen the recent images of violence in our streets and the chaos in our communities,” Trump said. “Many have witnessed this violence personally, some have even been its victims. I have a message for all of you: the crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon — and I mean very soon — come to an end. Beginning on January 20th 2017, safety will be restored.”

He put the responsibility for recent unrest — both domestically after the shooting of police and internationally with the growing threat of terrorism — squarely on the shoulders of President Obama and presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

“This is the legacy of Hillary Clinton: death, destruction, terrorism and weakness,” Trump thundered. “But Hillary Clinton’s legacy does not have to be America’s legacy. The problems we face now – poverty and violence at home, war and destruction abroad – will last only as long as we continue relying on the same politicians who created them. A change in leadership is required to change these outcomes.”

    • Lizard

He was just saying whatever got the Rethug Convention-goers screaming his name in blind adulation. He didn’t mean any of it.

  • safari
    • DaddyRay

Are we to assume victim = dead

      • Leo

        I normally do

      • JCF

        I think so.

    • The_Wretched

It’ll be 1-3 days before the kids in critical condition stabilize or die.

    • Bambino

Another report at least 20 victims with many fear to be dead.

    • Joe in PA

14 dead? What the fuck kind of weapon did that monster have? Oh, a perfectly legal one?

      (Not directed at you Safari)

      • Tread

If you search for it, you’ll find a video on Twitter (I’m not posting it) of a kid in a class room with the shooter outside firing a gun. You can tell it’s a rapid-fire gun (probably those super helpful, high-murdering AR-15s). We are fucked as a country. Absolutely fucked.

Not to advocate violence against anyone, but there will be no effect until more members of Congress and/or their families are directly affected. I know, I know, the Republican fool who got shot playing softball dug his heels in on opposing gun control. Just shows that one fool being wounded won’t be enough. In any case, schoolyards won’t be the place where minds are changed, nor churches even. The appeal will have to go directly to Congress, and this mindless violence will just have to play itself out. Tater tots and stewed pears.

  • MoonlightUnkindledOne

Trump response (well, general 2nd Amendment Fetishizer response): Thoughts and prayers. Thoughts and prayers. Let’s not politicize it (cause it’s only politicizing something if one is trying to propose solutions to deal with the problem at hand yet is not politicizing if, say, the gun lobby uses the shooting as incentive to get people to buy more guns cause far too many morons think that they’re Rambo and if they were there, they would have found that shooter and taken them down with no collateral damage inflicted). And so on and so on.

  • The Sentinel
    • Jerry Kott

      That is one solution.

  • ‘Til Tuesday

This is an issue where I’m losing my ability to care any more. We as a nation decided to make guns widely available and we have over 300 million (!!!) of them free-floating through our nation. Then we’re shocked when someone picks up a gun and starts shooting? Why??? Stupid is as stupid does!

Look – as sickening and sad as it is, we’ve basically decided as a nation that these kind of shootings are a price we’re willing to pay for nearly universal access to guns, and we’re loath to put any kind of even reasonable restrictions on guns (at least a majority of Americans are loath to). We gotta face the truth: the NRA is THE most powerful organization in America, and their members are a force to be reckoned with. They have the upper hand politically.

Every time there’s another mass shooting, we go through this kabuki theater, where everyone cries and wails about how awful it is, but in the end we do nothing to stop it. If we didn’t do anything as a result of all the little kids getting gunned down at Sandy Hook – we aren’t going to do anything ever. So dry your tears America – this is what you’ve chosen.

    • bzrd

right, to the republikkkunts it’s the necessary collateral damage until it’s one of their loves but, then, it’s too late for them

  • Friday’s_cat

Bullet resistant glass, windows bricked up above student’s heads, metal detectors, hardened classroom doors, security. All coming out of tax payer wallets so the gun loons can feel secure with their arsenals. I say tax firearm and ammunition sales to cover the costs regular Americans sped to protect themselves from the NRA.
