Canadian Figure Skater Eric Radford Becomes First Ever Openly Gay Winter Olympics Gold Medalist [VIDEO]

Pink News reports:

Eric Radford has become the first ever openly gay man to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympics. The Canadian athlete won gold in the team figure skating event after he and his partner Meagan Duhamel skated magnificently to Adele’s Hometown Glory. He followed in the footsteps of Australian diver Matthew Mitcham, who got a gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Radford came out in the same year that he won a silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia.

  • narutomania

Yaaaaay, Eric Radford!!!! Hurray for Canada!!! Huzzah!

  • Reality.Bites

Best part of winning for Canada is not having to meet Pence

    • DaddyRay

Indeed – probably the thought of meeting Justin Trudeau helped propel him to Gold

      • Gayer Than Thou

Seriously – it crossed my mind to learn to figure skate at elite levels and convert to Canadianism before these games just so I could meet Trudeau.

        • Robincho

A small effort, but SO worth it…

        • Jeffrey

          Canadianism lol

          • Gayer Than Thou

            Let us pray, eh?

    GO, CANADA!!!

  • Awesome! Go Eric Radford!

  • SoCalGal20

Awwwww love the photo of him and Adam Rippon. Hope there was some celebrating at Pride House!

  • GayOldLady

That was a thing of beauty to watch. Magnificent!!!!!!

  • JAKvirginia

Whoa! Watch out Canada. Earthquakes, tornados, and God’s wrath be comin’!

    • Joseph Miceli

Has anyone called One Million Moms???? Why, kids all over the world might grow up thinking that they can be gay, happy and successful. We can’t have that!

    • AmeriCanadian

Canadians are tough and they watch out for each other. I was on my way to work Wednesday (still in Windsor) and I slid off the road while making a left turn from a stop (intersection was icy). The car was stuck in the snow so I began the process of rocking the car back and forth to get out. Not two minutes passed and two different drivers stopped to help me get out. This would NOT have happened in Michigan.

We don’t believe in god’s wrath. We went to school and believe in science, scientific method…

When you have to work twice as hard to be taken seriously…and it shows! Congrats, Sir!!!!

  • Silver Badger

MSM doesn’t seem to have much on this story yet. How odd. It is early though.

  • The Milkman

C’mon, Eric! If it can’t be a gold for the US, then a gold for our lovely Canadian friends is great! Go, Canada!!

      Canada First!

  • ClevelandJim

I was not expecting that headline to choke me up…such a sentimental old queen sometimes. So happily thrilled for these guys!

As I stated before, I am only concerned with the marvelous accomplishments of this beautiful Black Girl Mamme Biney, But I see her winning spirit even attracted Rippon…Good.
However, in the famous words of Issa Rae

Here’s the thing: there just aren’t many black people to root for in the Winter Games. It’s as though we black people have anough sense to stay indoors when it’s snowing…

      • prixator

Skating/hockey and curling rinks are indoors!

        • e jerry powell

Now convince some black people to get on skates,

There are a couple of black ladies’ skaters from France this games. The one in pairs, Vanessa James (Canadian by birth, skated for the US unti 2005, then skated for the UK), advanced to the free skate but isn’t a threat to medal. How the other one, Maé-Bérénice Méité (born in Paris, parents from Congo and Ivory Coast), does in singles (I think she’s one of the first black female singles skaters from France since Surya Bonaly) remains to be seen, but she finished ninth out of ten in the team event. Her short program was set to a Beyoncé medley.

          P. K. Subban couldn’t suit up for Canada, because the NHL said none of their players could participate in the Olympics.

        • e jerry powell

Not to mention the fact that winter sports are generally more expensive than summer sports — figure skating in particular (ice time, coaching fees, costumes and skate maintenance). It takes a longt time to advance to elite levels in any sport, and more summer sports are easier to afford just in equipment costs over time.

The CBC’s feed is a little closer and a bit more thrilling.

    • John30013

Ugh! Not available in the U.S., apparently.

      • e jerry powell

NBC has the US on lock.

  • edrex

wow. mesmerizing. what a lovely thing to see at the beginning of the day.

  • David Walker

I also like that the arena is painted purple, anticipating gay victories.

I love that youtube video of their performance. It’s just what I’ve been wanting to see, the perspective from the audience. On television, the cameras always stay zoomed in and you don’t get to appreciate the speed or height and distance covered by the jumps as well. I have the same complaint about the aerial skiing and snowboarding, the cameras stay zoomed in on the twists and turns, but you don’t appreciate that it’s done 30 feet above the ground or the distance they cover.

In other words: Things are getting Darker, Gayer, and Different because people are being scored on performance rather than conformity to right wing political correctness.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Hey FOX, behold the Rainbow and know that it is strong. Congratulations the Eric and Adam, well done.

  • ColdCountry

Amazing grace and artistry! And extra kudos to he and his partner, and the choreographer and coach, for developing a program that flowed so beautifully in spite of the great disparity in their heights. At no time did he seem to be hulking over her, or physically bullying her. A real achievement.

  • Ninja0980

    Congrats Eric!

  • Lars Littlefield

Does it count if they come out several years after they win gold? Give me some more time. I’m still working on Alberto Tomba.

    • prixator

Are there rumours about him? Or just wishful thinking?

  • craigbear

Double yay for me; in addition to the obvious angle, Eric Radford’s skating partner is from my hometown! I never knew her personally, I was already in high school by the time she was born, but I did know some relatives of hers.
