Trump Plans To Privatize International Space Station

The Washington Post reports:

The Trump administration wants to turn the International Space Station into a kind of orbiting real estate venture run not by the government, but by private industry. The White House plans to stop funding the station after 2024, ending direct federal support of the orbiting laboratory. But it does not intend to abandon the orbiting laboratory altogether and is working on a transition plan that could turn the station over to the private sector, according to an internal NASA document obtained by The Washington Post.

“The decision to end direct federal support for the ISS in 2025 does not imply that the platform itself will be deorbited at that time — it is possible that industry could continue to operate certain elements or capabilities of the ISS as part of a future commercial platform,” the document states. “NASA will expand international and commercial partnerships over the next seven years in order to ensure continued human access to and presence in low Earth orbit.”

Almost all states with oil and gas production have Compulsory Pooling laws, which forces unwilling landowners to have the minerals beneath their property mined, if a majority of the landowners over the deposit have given their consent. WV doesn’t (yet) have the forced pooling, probably because the state had a long history of companies stealing land and mineral rights, whether it was for coal, timber, or oil and gas.

So what if the US stops funding the ISS. It’s INTERNATIONAL!! We don’t get to call all the shots on this. Hell, we can’t even send our people up there now without hitching a ride from the Russians! Trump doesn’t know jack shit about the ISS, what it does, what it really represents… nothing. Like most things – he doesn’t know shit. The only “privatization” involvement I can see is whatever the EU space program decides and probably also Elon Musk and his private space endeavors. Trump and his cronies discussing something as scientifically advanced as the ISS is absolutely ludicrous. On a side note, if you use an app like Heavens Above or Starry Night (or other astro apps) for your iPad or computer to track the ISS, you can see it in the night sky when it passes over your area. It moves very quickly but it is awesome to see!! It is so large that you can actually see that it has a shape – not like a typical satellite. It’s really bright too! One night, at a friends house on Maui, we watched the ISS with the space shuttle right behind it, closing in on the ISS as it was approaching to dock with the ISS. Fucking amazing. It lasted all of 5 minutes but WOW.

    • Natty Enquirer

The ISS can frequently be spotted crossing the twilight sky. It’s a cool sight.

      • TK

Yeah, and through a good set of binoculars (esp. the expensive stabilized versions) it is quite an impressive sight!

    • PickyPecker

I remember seeing SkyLab fly over when I was a wee pecker.

      • Max_1

SkyLab moved faster than any star ever could.
I remember back in ’74, we’d have SkyLab hunting camp fires…

        Ah… Yute.

      • McSwagg

Was that supposed to be a “wee wee pecker”?

    • Karl Dubhe

It’s the principle of the thing, really.

It’s one more thing the government isn’t spending money on anymore, that’s going to suppress demand. It’s also a pattern with what they’re doing with the other things the US government used to study. If you don’t look, you’ll not find new stuff to profit off of.

The UK’s empire relied on private funding for research in the 19th century. It’s one of the reasons the UK doesn’t have an empire anymore.

    • ColdCountry

That must have been totally amazing to see – I’m so jealous! My eyes aren’t good enough anymore to see a shape to it – maybe I should try my binoculars? If you go to the NASA site and sign up, they will send you emails telling you when and were it will be visible in your area.

  • Halou

That is bullshit, will be vetoed immediately by the other contributing nations. America will either have to grow the fuck up, or deliberately withdraw itself from the 21st century space race.

Perhaps Donald Trump is intending to let the Russians take over the political operation of the station? It would certainly fit the pattern he has set these last few years.
I remember at the G20 not so long ago he proposed a joint Russian-American cyber warfare unit in which American intelligence agencies would share with the Kremlin both what they know and how they know it. And he wants a Russian-American counter-terrorism / peace force to determine the course of events in Ukraine and in Syria and anywhere else Russian “not soldiers” make their presence felt, with no regard at all for the will of the people living there.

“President Trump is defending Rob Porter even though, privately, he says he’s guilty.”

      Yep, Donnie’s two-faced.

“Trump tells friends that he deplores the #MeToo movement and believes it unfairly exposes CEOs to lawsuits from their female employees. The fact that women frequently face sexual predation in the workplace doesn’t impact his view on this.”

Stubbornly fixes on one childishly simplistic, and self-centered, point of view.

“In the Oval Office, Trump read a print-out of the Daily Mail story with incredulity. He quickly turned on Porter. Trump said he was shocked that this clean-cut Harvard guy with the perfectly parted hair — “straight out of central casting” — could have violently attacked women.”

      • Read a print out? Himself?
      • Stupid, obsessed with appearances, doesn’t know the difference between Hollywood tropes and reality.

“Trump has also told associates that he views men who beat their wives the same way he views child molesters: as “sick puppies.” (This sits uncomfortably beside the fact that Trump stood by accused child molester Roy Moore.)”

And his own history of abuse. No awareness of the contradictions of his words, views, or actions.

    • clay

Sounds like those for sources were Kellyanne Conway, Stephen Miller, Sebastian Gorka, and Jeannine Pirro. “He supports women privately.”

NBC faced criticism for political comments one analyst made during the broadcast of the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Olympics, and now the network is apologizing.

The controversy started when analyst Joshua Cooper Ramo, who was hired to bring historical context to NBC’s coverage, noted how significant Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s visit was.

“Every Korean will tell you that Japan is a cultural and technical and economic example that has been so important to their own transformation,” Ramo said, per USA Today.

It was a comment that, according to adweek.com, referenced “Japan’s brutal annexation of the Korean peninsula in the lead-up to World War II. It was a comment many Koreans found offensive considering the 35-year occupation remains a painful memory.”

Not a very smart move from someone who was “hired to bring historical context to NBC’s coverage.” Seriously, saying something like “Every Korean will tell you …” that? He probably didn’t ask a single Korean.

TOTALLY identify with that. Totally. I have supernatural powers when it comes to keeping drinks upright.

When I was young and used to leave the bars totally stewed, I’d often fall on my face on the pavement outside. My friends were used to it. They marveled however at how I never spilled a bit of the drink that I was holding in my hand. (I often absconded with the bars’ drink glasses – something that to this day I’m not particularly proud of.)

There’s probably a thingy in the applicable segment of my brain that gives me perfect perfect bar-glass balance, even when the rest of me collapses.

Lipinski needs to be primaried out, there aren’t many of them out there that need to be primaried out, but they don’t all need to be primaried out. Some incumbents deserve to run again unless they are retiring and there needs to be someone to step up and run for the seat. Or they are so bad they need to have been gone a long time ago, ahem Lipinski.

Also for past votes that we now regret like the iraq war vote, than why the hell is no one primarying sanders for his anti-progressive views. That is bullshit, and only people from the sanders wing would pull that shit in a hypocritical notion and pay no attention to votes of representatives that are held up on a pedestal like they are saints. And despite opinions in some on the left, sanders is no saint. Meanwhile saying we need to primary out representatives because of their past votes and ignore people of the likes of sanders who’s views are hypocritical.

I care about who they are know, i am not for having inexperienced people in office who have never held a position before like a “video game developer”. Give me a doctor, lawyer, along those likes before inexperienced people just running to “shake up the establishment”.

‘Four months after the hurricane made landfall, ordinary life in the US territory is still far from normal: about 60,000 homes are still without roofs, 2.3 million people live in areas at risk of water contamination, and 15.5% of the population still lacks electricity.
The island, already billions of dollars in debt before the storm, faces a repair bill of some $94bn. The official death toll is 64 people but news agencies estimate the true number is closer to 1,000.’

Haven’t had to see the inside of a hospital since the introduction of Alupent back in 1969, although I’ve had plenty of major attacks. These days I keep a Vancenase inhaler in my holster. I hope Omarosa never discovers all the shit that can go wrong from Type II diabetes. She’ll she’ll never stop fainting for attention.

Mine is allergy triggered. While I’m allergic to a heck of a lot, some triggers are particularly bad. The last time I had a really bad attack was at a rodeo in an enclosed space. The Cow Palace in S. San Francisco. I should have realized it was a very bad idea but I went cuz a few friends invited me. They wanted to go to oogle cowboys, can’t blame them. The minute it hit I knew to remove myself from the venue and get to fresh air.

    Robert Mueller’s team:

-Zainab Ahmad: assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, specializing in terrorism cases
-Greg Andres: former deputy assistant attorney general, managed foreign bribery division
-Rush Atkinson: trial attorney in the DOJ fraud section
-Peter Carr: team spokesman, a veteran DOJ spokesperson
-Ryan K. Dickey: a veteran cyber prosecutor from the Justice Department’s computer crime and intellectual-property section
-Brock W. Domin: FBI Special Agent.
-Michael Dreeben: Deputy Solicitor General, who oversees the Justice Department’s criminal appellate docket; an expert in criminal law
-Kyle Freeny: attorney for the money laundering unit at the Department of Justice
-Andrew D. Goldstein: former leader of the public corruption unit, United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York
-Adam Jed: Attorney in the DOJ Civil Division, appellate section
-Robert Mueller: team leader; Special counsel for the United States Department of Justice
-Lisa C. Page (departed): DOJ trial attorney in the FBI’s Criminal Division Organized Crime Section; formerly an attorney in the office of the FBI general counsel. Her departure from the team was reported in late September 2017.
-Elizabeth Barchas Prelogar: Assistant with the Solicitor General’s office; fluent in Russian; former law clerk to Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Elena Kagan
-James L. Quarles III: former assistant special prosecutor on the Watergate Special Prosecution Force
    – Jeannie S. Rhee: Partner at WilmerHale, specializing in white-collar crime; a former attorney in the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel and Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia
-Peter Strzok (departed): a veteran counterintelligence investigator. He departed from the team in late July 2017, reportedly for exchanging anti-Trump and pro-Hillary Clinton text messages with a colleague prior to Mueller’s investigation.
-Brandon Van Grack: United States Department of Justice National Security Division Prosecutor
-Andrew Weissmann: Chief of the DOJ Criminal Division’s Fraud Section
-Aaron Zebley: former chief of staff to Mueller at the FBI
-Aaron S. J. Zelinsky: an attorney on detail from the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland

Does anyone seriously believe all of these people are willing making themselves pariahs for a measly government pay check instead of what could be made in private practice?

Mueller is going to bring about a constitutional crisis.

    Copied from wiki.

    • Treant

Frankly? Yes. Because they’ll be paid (off) well, and no obscenity nor violation nor statement from Dumpy has gotten America off its ass so far.

I’m not saying they won’t tender some charges. I’m saying the highest ones for the Dumpster clan will be designed not to stick.

      • sadoldguy

They all could be making many times what they are getting from the government in private practice.
No matter what the outcome of Mueller’s investigation, millions of people will hate them.

        Get real.

        • Treant

You seem nice when disagreed with.

          • sadoldguy

I don’t get it. Compliment or insult?

          • JCF

He’s insulting you. He does that a lot—don’t let it bother you.

        • BobSF_94117

Yes, millions of stupid people will hate them. Probably a badge of honor.

          • sadoldguy

            Not if they loose.

      • bkmn

Look at how many are long term DOJ employees that were more interested in serving their country than chasing the buck.

        • Treant

Look at how many are in a position to hide plenty of bucks that never appear in their “salaries.”

Besides, one greedy dick at the top can destroy a whole lot of service. Case in point. There only needs to be one corrupt person…as long as it’s Mueller.

          • sadoldguy

And no body else on the team is smart enough to realize that is going on?

          • Treant

And risk the paycheck? Unlikely. Word gets out that you’re unreliable, and that’s it. You will, quite literally, never work in that town again. Or any other.

OK, then, back at you. List current charges against any of the Trump cabal or direct hangers-on. Not piddling past hires. Not minor charges where we know there’s a lot more. Not people given house arrest. (hint: zero).

Then list number of direct admissions of guilt on Twitter or in the media, compared to number of indictments on those public admissions (hint: the ratio is infinite).

In short, if you’re insisting they’re competent…show me their competency. So far, we get dribbles and drips of “news” exactly when Americans should be in full revolt.

To use your rhetoric back at you: get real. You’re being led by the nose and you seem perfectly happy about it.

            Enjoy.

          • sadoldguy

“led by the nose”, maybe, “happy about it” not at all, I think we have suffered an institutional breakdown, in the media, in the voting system, in the population and in the rule of law.

But, this isn’t prime time TV, takes more than an hour for a resolution.

          • Treant

I never said I expected it in an hour. A year and a piece? Oh, fuck yes. That’s more than a quarter of the “presidency” of this yutz. And now we’re getting into election time, when any charges would be seen as “political,” so now we can “enjoy” sitting around until after November waiting for them.

Oh, no, sorry, then it’s still waiting for the new Congress to be seated so we can’t have that. January at the earliest. And there’s another year. When there will be another excuse.

So frankly, do I think they’re honest? No. Do I think they really give a shit about the rule of law? Not at all. Do I think the bribes are flying fast and freely under the tables to Mueller and friends? Abso-fucking-lutely.

And so far, there is not one jot of evidence to prove their competence or interest in doing their jobs.

          • sadoldguy

I disagree, but I’m not in those circles, I hope I’m right.
Warning, I’m wrong a bunch of the time.

    • bkmn

Trump is the cause of any constitutional crisis.

      • MBear

The voter apathy and belligerent ignorance is more likely the culprit

        • bkmn

Good point, of course that has been aided by media that is not interested in being journalists.

          • MBear

See also voter apathy and belligerent ignorance that no one said anything while Reagan changes the laws to encourage that perhaps…?

    • sadoldguy

Yes, I am an asshole, sorry for the cheering.

    • Ross

Does anyone seriously believe all of these people are willing making themselves pariahs for a measly government pay check instead of what could be made in private practice?

      Pariahs?

What the fuck are you talking ’bout?

History will record all these people as heroes to America.

      I bow to them.

      • sadoldguy

Point I was trying to make is that no body takes that job for the “government pay check”, and the death threats.
If people are willing to join that team they want to do a good job.

        I bow to them too.

Yes, ‘pariahs’, millions will hate them either outcome.

    • JCF

As an Episcopalian, I’m absolutely HORRIFIED. Here’s the school’s contact address: https://tesgalv.org/community/contact-us/

And here’s the message I just sent them:

      “God DAMN your racism-enabling!

I’m a lifelong, faithful Episcopalian, who has come to the story of your DISGUSTING enabling of racism, via the secular press. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/texas-religious-school-racist-bullying_us_5a7391aae4b01ce33eb12c6c?ncid=inblnkushpmg00000009

Yes, the WORLD has noticed, and you are disgracing the entire Episcopal Church. DROP your execrable “you can’t touch us, we’re religious” defense, and SETTLE THE CASE—with an unambiguous apology. And do it yesterday!!!

Failing that, drop the term “Episcopal”—from your racist school, AND from the parish that provides it cover—and throw on the pointy-headed white robes that express your true character. And to HELL with you!

The world is watching—so are actual Jesus-following Episcopalians.”

      • Cackalaquiano

Does the Episcopal Church Have conservative denominations that use the “Episcopal” title, like Lutherans and Presbyterians and Methodists do?

        • JCF

There was a group that broke away in the 19th century, called the “Reformed Episcopal Church” (they remain tiny).

But for the most part, schismatics from the 20th century on call themselves “Anglican”. As you may have heard, some broke away in the past 20 years—over, of course, Teh Gay—and aligned themselves w/ heinously homophobic African Anglican churches. These African churches have become increasingly standoffish from the worldwide Anglican Communion, centered on the Archbishop of Canterbury (in the UK, the Anglican motherland). The Episcopal Church remains the sole official branch of the Anglican Communion, within the United States (although the Episcopal Church also has some overseas provinces, so it’s not exclusively a U.S. church). HTH.

You’re going to see more of this. There’s a GOP religious education freedom bill (the PROSPER act [sic]) sailing through that would enable this.

      http://religiondispatches.org/gop-education-bill-would-radically-rewrite-religious-freedom-and-license-virtually-any-form-of-discrimination/

Then there’s the cakeshop case, which SCOTUS will probably announce on the last June day of this year’s session.

    • Cackalaquiano

I really think the extreme religious conservatives are overplaying their hand and that their mainstream acceptance is starting to fade. Their efforts today are gonna result in a cultural backlash over the next decade or two, diminishing their role as a cultural and political force.

OT but seen this Bernie bot make the rounds lately pushing crap like this and my only reply is go fuck yourself.
Not finding Juanita Broderick credible has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with the fact that she continues to make excuses for why she supports Trump when he attacks the women who have accused him of assault and women who have accused his staff of the same and have proof of it.
She also said nothing and went on shows of people attacking the Roy Moore accusers.
And yet she wants us to believe that Bill and Hillary have done the things to her that she alleges?
    Hell no.
Finally, given how this bot and others don’t seem to mind Bernie’s gang rape fantasy essay, perhaps she shut her mouth on hypocrisy.

O/T Just finished watching (PBS Independent Lens) I Am Not Your Negro. It’s surprising – and disappointing – how topical James Baldwin’s comments about the murders of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and MLK Jr. are, 50 years later. Growing up in the dominant white culture, it took the film clip of Doris Day from Lover Come Back to drive home the contrast with the lives of African-Americans (and of the lower classes generally).

Last point: the credits include three French-language public broadcasters – ARTE France, RTS Switzerland, and RTBF Belgium. Does this mean that no American organizations or individuals could be found to finance the production costs?

OT: I would think the cats would understand their owner isn’t drowning.

My cat will walk in and lay in the shower and roll around being all cute every morning when I am trying to get ready for work – he obviously thinks if he can prevent me from taking a shower I won’t leave him

    • Treant

“It is ALL OVER YOU! You CAN’T POSSIBLY BE SAFE OR HAPPY! Let us HELP YOU!”

(We have a dog who gets annoyed when either of us takes a shower. It’s because he’s been left alone).

      • Gretchen

The spouse has an audience of at least three dogs every morning when he showers. They line up in a row on his bath mat and wait on him to open the curtain at the end.

    • Dayglo

Siamese can be a bit, well … talkative. I would seriously bring their little asses in the shower with me just to shut ‘em the hell up.

But I think they’re trying to rescue the human in the death machine.

They dont understand and they dont care.

OT: The food for the grouse spouse’s birthday was a success. The pot roast was the best I’ve ever made. I found the recipe on Pinterest, and it was kind of weird. I adapted a bit, and finally settled on taking a pack each of brown gravy mix, Italian dressing mix, and Ranch dressimg mix and making a thick paste with beef broth. I smeared it on the roast and the covered with another cup of broth. I cooked it low and slow in the electric roaster on 250 for about 4 hours, but it was tender much sooner. By dinner it was amazing and falling apart. I used a chuck roast for any pot roast novices out there.

I also made my first homemade red velvet cake, and it turned out fairly well. I thought the edges were a little dry, but overall it was good.

Deleted that whole paragraph. It would be too easy for someone to figure out who I was talking about, and I’m not going to inadvertently out someone just because I am pissed.

    • Treant

‘Round here we say, “So deep in the closet he’s living in Narnia.”

And it sounds like your spouse’s family is toxic as hell. How he escaped…amazes me…

      • Gretchen

My father-in-law was a man much like the spouse. He had his influence growing up. The rest are a “good Christian family” and all that implies. They think I keep him from going to church because I am an atheist. They can’t comprehend that it’s their hypocrisy that keeps him away.

        • Treant

Yeah, if I weren’t an agnostic, I wouldn’t go due just to the hypocritical nature of “trying to live like Jesus” versus “the way we actually live.”

This was actually from the 2010 Winter Olympics, featuring poor Gillian Cooke of Scotland splitting her pants. Not that I pay attention to these things.

I don’t understand what the stream of revenues would be that would make it an attractive private investment.

    • leastyebejudged

Exactly. Is this another give away to industry of something the taxpayers own ?

  • fahvel

what do the words “International Space Station” mean???? If it’s really private and a great business genius mogul takes over, it could be a great thing unless it crashes into a populated area of a non shithole country 🙂

Something seems resolved with the issues I’d been having on JMG with the site crashing and reloading every 30 seconds. I’ve had zero problems this morning. Are the Russians asleep or something??👍👍👍

Let me know when Trump Space Place sells condos on the ISS to Russian oligarchs at 5 times market value. You know it’s coming.

President Donald Trump has used the death of a Border Patrol agent last November to call for his wall across the U.S. southern border, but the FBI announced on Wednesday there is no evidence the man’s death was a homicide.

“none of the…evidence collected and analyzed have produced evidence that would support the existence of a scuffle, altercation, or attack.”

Interesting idea. I’d love to see SpaceX or another similar venture take the reins, perhaps in partnership with one or more universities or nonprofits.

  • The_Wretched

Putin made some number of the Russian Oligarchs by ‘privatizing’ national assets. This idea is looting and making Trump loyal vassals.
