Trump Signs Budget Deal To End Shutdown

CNBC reports:

President Donald Trump signed a major budget plan into law Friday, ending the year’s second government shutdown hours after it started. Both chambers of Congress passed a short-term funding bill in the wee hours of Friday and cleared the way for a massive boost to military and domestic spending hours after funding lapsed at midnight. The government partially shut down for the second time in less than a month.

The massive legislation cleared Congress after opposition delayed or threatened its passage in both chambers. The House narrowly passed the budget bill by 240 to 186 before dawn Friday, then sent it to Trump. Early Friday, the Senate approved the measure by a 71-28 vote following Sen. Rand Paul’s repeated attempts to block the vote. The Kentucky Republican opposed the spending increases contained in the agreement and wanted to vote on an amendment to maintain budget caps.

So does this end the stop-go-stop-go employment cycle of federal workers for at least a year?

    • clay

No, but that’s for political reasons.

240 to 186 and that’s “narrowly?” Of course Congress abandoned the Dreamers once again, and if the Democrats actually believe the promises from Ryan and McConnell about taking up that legislation I have some oceanfront property in Nebraska I’d like to sell them.

    • GayOldLady

This is truly a Budget Bill, as it should be. If DACA would have gone into the bill the GOP would have also forced in all of the immigration limitations. The Dems might need to win back the House to have a real chance of getting clean bills on DACA

      • Joe in PA

Indeed. But what do we do between March 5th and next January?

        • GayOldLady

According to everything I’ve read a clean DACA bill would pass in both chambers, but in the House Paul Ryan will not bring it to the floor. Yesterday Pelosi was trying to invoke a rule that will allow for voting on stand alone bills, but the last I heard she was unsuccessful. The truth is she has little power unless she wanted to whip her members into a “no” vote on the budget bill. I think she made the right decision by allowing her members to vote their conscience because there were a lot of funding measures in the bill passed this morning that Dems support. We can’t beat them by becoming them. We have to win back the House and try to save the DACA kids in the courts if we can’t figure out how to get Ryan to allow a DACA vote.

        • clay

We still need to do that BEFORE March 5th.

          • GayOldLady

Part of the Dems agreement with McConnell in keeping the government open last month was a clean vote on DACA after the Budget Bill passed. Unless McConnell back out on that commitment which he made to both Dems & Repubs that support DACA, there will be an up or down vote on it in the Senate. When that happens Ryan will have no choice but vote on DACA, the fear is that Ryan will try to throw all the Trump provisions in that have across the board immigration
            limits and funding the Wall.

        • Steven H

Lawsuits and the general goodwill of the public, which isn’t in a hurry to implement Trump’s anti-DACA policies. Keep ICE out of your neighborhood for just a few more months. And vote in November.

Lord Dampnut’s maladministration thinks AGCC is a Jynese plot and is behaving accordingly. Nebraska will likely have saltwater coastline in a century or so. Be careful what you snark about.

Someone please post a pic of the shirtless Tonga flag bearer at the Olympics opening ceremony to distract from looking at Trump’s ugly puss.

Well, obviously that means the shitgibbon prevailed and got “the wall”. Right?

    • GayOldLady

Nope, no wall in this bill

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

Friendly Atheist just pointed out a nasty provision of the bill: It gives FEMA money to churches to rebuild after a disaster. Just another assault on church/state separation.

    • Steven H

I don’t think that’s unreasonable. Those buildings often get pressed into service as shelters and community centers during disasters anyway. I’m not sure this is a hill atheists should die on.

Besides, now that their god has abandoned them in a storm, perhaps these church people will start thinking of FEMA as their personal lord and savior. I have faith in Lord FEMA.

      • djcoastermark

An interesting note, here in Florida, church based school buildings cannot be used as shelters during disasters such as hurricanes as they do not have to meet the same building codes as public schools, which have to be built to withstand cat 5’s and be able to be used as a shelter.

Has Trump finished reading the ten page rebuttal memo from the Democrats on the Intelligence Committee so he can sign off on that yet? I know it’s only been FIVE DAYS.

      Trump read?
      Oh, you silly, silly man.

      • Acronym Jim

        My bad. I meant “read.”

      • Marides48

Well, at least it could be read to him as a bedtime story.

    • ceeenbee

Be patient. The whitey house artists haven’t finished turning the memo into a cartoon yet so fake president shitgibbon can delve into its substance.
