TEXAS: Lt. Governor Vows To Block “Disgraceful” Wendy Davis Filibuster Movie From Filming In Senate Chamber

The Austin Statesman reports:

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick on Thursday said that, if he can help it, the planned movie on former state Sen. Wendy Davis’ 2013 filibuster won’t be shot in the Texas Senate chamber.

“If I have anything to do with that, I’m not going to let them use the Senate chamber to shoot because they have already disgraced it once. I’m not going to let them do it again,” Patrick, who leads the Senate, said in a speech to the conservative Texas Public Policy Foundation think tank.

The movie, “Let Her Speak,” will star Sandra Bullock as Davis, whose nearly 13-hour filibuster temporarily prevented a GOP bill restricting access to abortions from becoming law. The moment launched Davis into the national spotlight and led to her running for governor in 2014, a race she lost by 20 percentage points to Gov. Greg Abbott.

My delicate white skin can’t handle the light of day.

    • JCF

So throw on your white robe!

  • Mark

Oh sweetie -they can recreate it as a set and it’ll be a helluva cleaner than what yours is. By the way, doesn’t it belong to the taxpayers anyway? I didn’t know you were the dictator that says who and who cannot use a taxpayer paid for space.

  • JoeMyGod

Dan Patrick joked that he should be played by Brad Pitt or George Clooney.

  • Boreal

What is this goober afraid of?

    • Ron

      Everything, including his own shadow.

    • BlueberriesForMe

      Being irrelevant.

  • Bad Tom

Sure, block the filmmaker’s user of the Senate chamber.

Then the filmmaker will just note your intransigence in the credits, and how they worked around it.

Pissing off filmmakers is a dangerous game.

    • Chucktech

Two words, fucker: Sound stage. Hollywood can reproduce your shitty little digs in tinsel town.

      • David Walker

And make it look either better or worse.

        • Bad Tom

Very likely to make Dan Patrick look worse, quite possibly by explicit name.

  • kaydenpat

Petty and mean spirited. Typical Republican.

  • GayOldLady

Another arrogant, bitter, impotent old man trying to stop the telling of a brave woman’s story. FU old man #TimesUP

    • McSwagg

He’s started running election ads touting that he’s just another “deplorable” trumpeting turdlet.

  • kareemachan

    Well, that’s whiny.

  • Boreal

    Bahahahahaha, impotent majority fail.

    • GayOldLady

We’re going to take back the House. Put that in your diet Coke bottle and snort it.

      • Todd20036

        Sure hope so

      • Joe in PA

To that end…I just signed up as a volunteer for IndivisibleBerks. (Berks is our county)

        • GayOldLady

Good for you. Keep me posted

          • Joe in PA

Will do. There are Indivisible sub groups everywhere. So far I’m just signed up for database work. I canvased for Hillary in 2016, something I’ve decided I’m not cut out for. I’ve attended one “webinar” and already I’ve learned stuff…I’m embarrassed to admit how little I knew about the “petition” process for candidates.

          • GayOldLady

I haven’t checked out our nearest group yet, although I did sign up for emails. We’ve had our plate full over the last year and we’re hoping to get the ship leveled out a bit so we both can get active before the midterm. Darlin gets cast off of her hand today and goes into a brace. The total recupp time is about 5 months, but she’s will be able to use the hand for minor tasks in the interim. She’s been a real trooper since her surgery, but I know she will get impatient quickly with not being able to do what she wants. My daughter is moving back East from the Left coast in early March and we’ll be traveling to visit with her and we’re planning a trip South later in March. You know I have to get my beach visit in otherwise I’ll be a real beach for the rest of the year. 🙂

    • Todd20036

Yup, a veto proof republican majority is all they need to set up camps and undo Social Security, Welfare, SNAP, and ACA

      • Steverino

And if they get another fascist seated on SCOTUS, they can undo Windsor by reinstating DOMA, which this time a fascist Supreme Court would uphold. And the red states bringing suit to overturn Obergefell is a given. Bye-bye marriage equality.

      • The_Wretched

Lifetime caps on medicaid is being floated for the short term.

        • William

My many eye surgeries probably total up to more than the lifetime cap.

          • The_Wretched

It’s stupid and cruel of them.

          • William

Sorry kid, you had leukemia, so no antibiotics for that infected cut. You’ve already blown your health care fund.

          • The_Wretched

I was just talking this over with a coworker. Will the republicans at least spring for the suicide booths for the people who have run out of months of coverage?

          • William

Oh no, suicide is not permitted. People must suffer and die in pain.
If you don’t have enough money to pay for a funeral, the state will transport the dead to a rendering plant. Please place unwanted loved ones at the curb by 7:00 AM on Tuesdays.

      • pch1013

Add another two GOP-run statehouses, and they can rewrite the Constitution to enshrine themselves in power forever.

  • Tiger Quinn

Yeah but – and I know somebody will come at me for this – Davis turned out to be a complete wet blanket. Propped up by others, she never had the fire, never had even the VOICE to take the moment she’d been given. I wanted her to win too, and campaigned hard for her (we lived in Dallas back then) – but she just wasn’t THERE. So the idea of Bullock making a movie of this….

No. It will be filled with Churchill moments that never happened.

    • skyweaver

I’m not coming at you. But I will say that as a woman I’m glad any one woman took the step to speak up back then. She was under no obligation to go on and be the torchbearer for a movement. She saw a horrible law that was really terrible for women and she spoke up. If she didn’t have it in her to go on, so be it. But for a moment she stepped forward as a female and spoke up. I’ll always admire her for that.

  • SoCalGal20

    Snowflake alert!

  • Rebecca Gardner

So a Senator representing those who put her in office fighting the mean-spirited and evil desires of the GOP, who never represent those that put them in office, is disgraceful to the Senate chamber.

OK, got it fuck face. Why are Republicans such assholes. If I do move to Texas this year I’m voting straight Democratic Party.

    • Chucktech

“If I do move to Texas this year…”

I can’t imagine why you’d do that but Texas certainly needs as many good people like as as it can get.

      “…I’m voting straight Democratic Party.”

      Well, Duh!

      • R W C

Living away from Texas for 30 years, I knew when the call of family came I would return. I truly rue the day I had to accept the call.

Yeah, exercising democracy is sure disgraceful, innit. You want to know what’s disgraceful? Trying to control women and their reproductive futures. Fuck you.

  • TexasBoy

I wonder how he feels about the Best Little Whorehouse being filmed inside our state capitol in 1980?

    • RaygunsGoZap

If you asked him all you’d get is some Side-Steppin’!

    • William

Dolly and Burt did a lot of meet and greets during the filming. Nobody says no to Dolly.

How about building a wall on Texas’ northern border to keep them all in?

    • Steven in Texas

Darn-it JackNasty if you do that I will have to pole vault to get out of here!

  • SoCalGal20

OT but has this been discussed here? Yesteday Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny released a video.

In a 25-minute video published on YouTube Thursday morning, Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny accused Deputy Prime Minister Sergey Prikhodko—a top foreign policy official—of having been a conduit between the Kremlin and an oligarch linked to the Trump campaign.

With a mix of news clips, Navalny presented the case that during the 2016 election Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska, a past business associate of Paul Manafort, the indicted former Trump campaign chairman, passed to the Kremlin inside information about the Trump campaign he obtained from Manafort. Navalny also cites social media posts from Nastya Rybka, a Russian model and escort who has claimed to have been Deripaska’s mistress and who has written a memoir about their supposed affair titled A Diary of Seducing a Billionaire.

I first saw Clint Watts and Malcolm Nance’s tweets about this yesterday.

    • William

Rachel is watching this with her morning coffee.

      • SoCalGal20

        I hope so!

Wendy Davis losing to Abbott(r-Costello) by 20% is reason not to visit Texas.

    • R W C

….but, but, but, we have great BBQ y’all!

  • Duh-David

Fine. They should tell the Texas Film Commission that they will not need any assistance since they will not be filming anything in Texas.

    • William

There are a lot of things being filmed in Georgia these days.

  • Jerry Hinnant

Sorry it doesn’t belong to you and isn’t your decision to make!

Bet this dude’s pillowcases are all stained coal black from that shitty dye job.

Oh, I bet that’s not the only way he’s “stained his pillowcases”, know’m saying?

  • leastyebejudged

    20% ouch….

Ah Texans the only thing bigger than their egos is their fear of being accountable. BTW that photo looks like he leaned against the wallpaper and his cheap hair dye rubbed off on it.

  • David Walker

“…I’m not going to let them use the Senate chamber to shoot because they have already disgraced it once.” What was the first?

    • William

Dan Patrick walked through the door.

    • R W C

Davis’ right to free speech as allowed by legislative rules was disgraceful to him and his cronies. How dare a woman out think them! /s

      • David Walker

Oh. I thought it was referring to another movie filmed in the hallowed chamber.

    • Alexander Stallwitz

I speak wingnut so i assume its when Wendy Davis did her fillbuster and embrassed Texas by being uncoth for wanting women access to abortion and right to choose what they do when their bodies and revealing to the word that Texas is backwards

  • Gerry Fisher

Gee, you’d think that allowing them to film would highlight the evil nature of Davis and draw more people to your side. /s

  • William

Dan Patrick is running a campaign commercial about every five minutes during prime time. His biggest achievement seems to be opposing Obama.

    • R W C

Of the 48 lawsuits Texas filed against Obama administration between 2009 and 2017, they lost or withdrew more than they won,

  • DN

Ummmmm… it’s not like the fight scene at the end of Logan’s Run was actually fought in the U.S. senate…. seems to me that if he blocks filming, the producers can just build a set. Would cost more I guess but come on.

    • Reality.Bites

Don’t even have to build one. Sets are reused and borrowed all the time, and it’s not as if the Texas legislature interior is iconic and familiar to audiences.

The producers can, of course, pull the entire production out of Texas and spend millions boosting the economy of some other state

  • William

Between Green Screen and CGI, using the Senate chamber isn’t absolutely necessary.

  • Luther Kreiger

What is with white southern pricks having giant mouths, weak chins, and paper thin egos?

    • Stogiebear

      Breeding will out. . . .

      • JCF

        In- …

    • R W C

And, Paxton has felony indictments for securities fraud to accentuate his giant mouth and weak chin!

  • Matt

Ugh. Keep your kids away from this creep, too.

  • Lars Littlefield

Wendy Davis needs to run for governor again.

    • JCF

      I loved Wendy…

…but now, Lupe Valdez. It’s time for Texas to Go Brown! (and she’s a great candidate)

      …and she’s Family!

  • margaretpoa

Wendy Davis is at least a Texan, you disgusting piece of shit. You were born in Baltimore and didn’t get here until you were in your 30s.

    • kiprian

      If true, Baltimore apologies.

    • #DJTK5F

I believe you meant “…disgusting piece of teabagging, carpetbagging shit…”.

  • customartist

Dan Patrick = Gay as a picnic basket

  • Terry

I’d love more clarification on how “they” have disgraced the chamber.

Patrick and his Republican ilk have disgraced the chamber daily

  • Gianni

Talk about disgrace? I think I hear the voice of experience.

  • The Texas Legislature meets for one session (usually about six months) every two years. So instead of renting out the space and making some money for the state, he’s going to be a hateful sunofabitch. Mothefucker.
