Philippine Strongman Tells Court He’d Rather Face Firing Squad Than Imprisonment For Crimes Against Humanity

Reuters reports:

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday told the International Criminal Court (ICC) to go ahead and investigate him for crimes against humanity, and said he would prefer to face a firing squad than be jailed.

However, the firebrand leader notorious for his defiance of international pressure questioned whether the ICC had jurisdiction to indict him over the deaths of thousands of Filipinos in his war on drugs. He denied ever giving an order to police to kill drug suspects.

“I welcome you. If you want to find me guilty, go ahead. So be it. Find a country where they kill people with a firing squad and Iβ€˜m ready. If you haul me into a rigmarole of trial and trial, no need. Go ahead and proceed in your investigation. Find me guilty, of course. You can do that,” declared Duterte.

About 4,000 mostly urban poor Filipinos have been killed by police in Duterte’s signature campaign that has alarmed the international community. Activists believe the death toll is far higher and accuse police or systematic cover-ups and executions. Police and the government dismiss that.

Confine him in a small space with his buddy Donald Trump.

    A fate worse than death.

  • Makoto

I’m no fan of the death penalty. It’s not punishment nor reform, it’s simply revenge killing.

But, I will say that if he wants to off himself during a life without parole sentence, I would not stop him. Feel free, coward.

The man’s a vile despot and thug deserving of whatever comes his way. As for the firing squad, I say that too quick, I’m thinking more buried to his neck, covered in honey and poured over with fire ants. I know, I know, that would be cruel…what’s your point?

On another note, it should be pointed out that, like Duterte, the U.S. doesn’t recognize the ICC when it comes to Americans being charged. The U.S. has always publicly stated this so I can only hope no one in the State Dept. is going to be all bandwagon jumping.

  • Halou

“He denied ever giving an order to police to kill drug suspects.”

Like when King Henry II of England once said “Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?”, he never gave any explicit orders for the Archbishop of Canterbury to be murdered, he just expressed his dissatisfaction within earshot of people who were both violently drunk and loyal to a fault. That they interpreted his complaint in a certain way was totally not the Kings fault….

Bill O’Rielly and other right-wing TV personalities did a similar thing when they spent months spitting bile about “Dr Tiller the baby killer”, that a religious fanatic then murdered Dr Tiller outside the clinic he worked at….
And again, the 2016 Republican contenders putting their weight behind a fraudulently edited video to suggest Planned Parenthood was selling fetuses to research institutions.. And all of a sudden a maniac invades a clinic in Colorado screaming about “No more baby parts”…

So yes. The Philippine tyrant may be telling the truth when he says that he never ordered any executions, he just ranted about the issues and relied on his minions to put 2 and 2 together to equal themselves being given a license to kill.

  • Halou

“…said he would prefer to face a firing squad than be jailed.”

  • JCF

  • Wynter Marie Starr

Sounds like a plan to me. Let’s go for it!

    • Ann Kah

No, let’s let him linger in solitary for a long, long time. An execution would make him some kind of hero in certain quarters.

      • Wynter Marie Starr

While I have many problems with the death penalty, there are some crimes that scream out for it. I wouldn’t want this person to be broken out of a prison and I don’t think his warped world view would end in prison. In fact, I think it could influence others to the detriment of us all. If he’s dead, he can’t do those things.
