Fox Deletes “Unvetted” Column By VP Which Claimed US Olympic Motto Should Be “Darker, Gayer, Different”

Talking Points Memo reports:

Fox News has removed a controversial column penned by executive editor John Moody about diversity in the Olympics because it did not go through the “proper vetting process,” a Fox News insider told TPM Friday. The column, titled “Darker, Gayer, Different,” slammed the U.S. Olympics for its efforts to attract a diverse group of athletes for the Winter Games.

“Unless it’s changed overnight, the motto of the Olympics, since 1894, has been ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger.’ It appears the U.S. Olympic Committee would like to change that to ‘Darker, Gayer, Different.’ If your goal is to win medals, that won’t work,” Moody wrote Wednesday in the since-deleted column.

“In terms of John Moody, he has zero editorial oversight on any platform, his title is a formality and he hasn’t performed that function for years,” the source told TPM. “Editors were too deferential given his longevity and they didn’t give (the column) much oversight. That’s why it was removed.”

  • La Cieca

That is a genuinely awful lace front.

and yet….there were his comments yesterday for all the world to see.

  • Harveyrabbit

“because it did not go through the “proper vetting process,”

“But definitley not because it’s racist and homophobic. We at FOX have no problem with that.”

    • Lizard

He said everything he meant outright instead of using the typical dogwhistles. That’s the problem here, not that what he meant was utterly repulsive.

Why is Shepard Smith still a part of Fox?

I theorize that he knows certain things about certain people who matter over at the network (and likely has photos, audio recordings and/or videos)…

    Just delete John Moody instead!

So he is joining the bad hair sweepstakes at the GOP. Which is worse, him or Rand Paul?

  • greenmanTN

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to get what he was saying, “too many darkies and queers.”

As with many other “misstatements” by conservatives it isn’t that they said the wrong thing but they stated it too openly. “SHHH! That was supposed to be a secret!”

    • Lizard

I’m surprised they didn’t go the “It was just a joke, you libtards are too sensitive!” route.

      • MT YVR

That always reminds me of the one saying that an acquaintance used to use: I’d not kick him out of bed for eating crackers… and I’ve had crackers since she was a puppy.

    • AmeriCanadian

Actually, when I read the headline for the first time, I thought it had read “Darker, Grayer, Different” so I was baffled by some of the comments. It took another reading for it to click. I must admit, though, that I am not a rocket scientist.

    • netxtown

A bit OT…but I was down at Dallas VA today for appt. Finished up and needed to schedule another appt…and at the appt counter somebody had left a book behind,. They had made a plain-paper-bag cover for it…and on the outside, all it said was ‘front’. So curiosity killed the cat – I opened it up.
And there – in a VA hospital – a full copy of Mein Kampf. I kinda discreetly picked it up … and on my way out the door, in an outdoor trashcan it went. Later, i had to second guess that maybe it was a student doing research. ….so why wrap it?

      • greenmanTN

I doubt it was a student, so good for you. Whoever left it will just have to get their fix from Breitbart. *sigh*

It was removed because too many people on our side read it, and called out the bigotry Fox viewers love that shit

    A Letter to Our Customers,

Since 1912, our mission has been to sell high-quality products that inspire and enable people to enjoy the outdoors. Our commitment to customer service has earned us your trust and respect, as has our guarantee, which ensures that we stand behind everything we sell.

Increasingly, a small, but growing number of customers has been interpreting our guarantee well beyond its original intent. Some view it as a lifetime product replacement program, expecting refunds for heavily worn products used over many years. Others seek refunds for products that have been purchased through third parties, such as at yard sales.

Based on these experiences, we have updated our policy. Customers will have one year after purchasing an item to return it, accompanied by proof of purchase. After one year, we will work with our customers to reach a fair solution if a product is defective in any way.

This update adds clarity to our policy and will only affect a small percentage of returns. It will also ensure we can continue to honor one of the best guarantees in retail, with no impact for the vast majority of our customers. To learn more, please view our full return policy at llbean.com.

L.L.Bean has stood for quality, service, trust, and getting people outdoors ever since my great-grandfather founded our company over 100 years ago – and that will never change. Thank you for being a loyal customer and we look forward to continuing to inspire and enable you to Be an Outsider.

    Sincerely,

That our system is really bad at overturning anachronistic systems. That’s hardly news.

Besides, attempts to overturn the EC have been blocked by Republicans for blatantly partisan reasons. If nothing else, it shows that the will of the people is being held hostage by a political party.

          • gaycuckhubby

I thought “we” knew this watching and listening for 8 years of Obama’s administration (and even well before that). I think it is the Republicans/right wing jerks that would care not to admit they are racist/bigoted. Look at the denials/gloss over at SSH’s press conferences.

        • stevenj

So no effect by Russian hackers? Or the stupid and gullible that bought trump’s line?

          • gaycuckhubby

Of course I blame the stupid and gullible that bought Trump’s line. That’s the problem. And the claim of Russian hacking is that they put up Facebook ads that were false. I blame voters for believing the obvious lies almost as much as I blame the Russians for spreading them

    • We didn’t. Putin and the Republicans did.

      • gaycuckhubby

I’m a bit dubious about some of those claims, but either way you have to admit that American voters certainly deserve a large share of the blame

          THREE. MILLION. VOTES.

          • gaycuckhubby

But not in the states where it counts. And in no civilized Progressive country should Trump come anywhere near 3 million votes of someone as qualified as Clinton

          • Lizard

Dude. We’re well fucking aware of the travesty that is Donald Trump. The fact remains that if our system was remotely democratic, he would not be in office because the majority of the country made the correct choice.

Tweets like Evan’s are not helpful. They’re not insightful. Whether intentional or not, they’re gaslighting the populace by making it seem as though “the people” elected Trump when they did not. It’s factually incorrect and offensive.

          • stevenj

Then your argument is with the voters of those 3 states that electorally tipped it to trump. That would be “them”, not “us” or “we”.

During Obama’s administration I would say we were definitely headed in a “progressive” direction but much of that, most of it, has been wiped out by trump just in one year with his obsession to reverse everything Obama did. The EPA? Science has been eliminated. Court appointments – as right wing as possible. Religion – can now be used to discriminate against LGBT people. The US as a whole is not progressive. Some states are.

          From Wikipedia:

McMullin opposes abortion and identifies himself as pro-life.[49][50] McMullin supports overturning Roe v. Wade.[50] According to his campaign website, he opposes “a culture that subsidizes abortion on demand” and McMullin calls for action to reduce unintended pregnancies and promote adoption.[49]

On same-sex marriage, McMullin said in 2016 that he believes in the “traditional marriage between a man and a woman” but he “respects” the Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges (which found that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry) and thinks it is “time to move on” from the issue.[51] McMullin’s mother is in a same-sex marriage, having married another woman after separating from his father, and McMullin has said that “As far as my mother’s marriage is concerned, I believe in the sanctity of traditional marriage. It is an important part of my faith. My mother has a different view. That is OK. I love her very much.”[10]

McMullin favors cuts to entitlement programs such as Social Security, and has proposed means-testing the program and raising the retirement age.[53]

McMullin has said that if elected president, he would appoint originalist judges to the Supreme Court,[50] “in the mold of Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas.”[55]

OT: The first time I met this dean I was in a building he claimed as his while standing next to a bust of himself in the atrium. He then apologized for us students having to pay to use his lot to park as it wasn’t his idea. He’s been on medical leave for months. https://twitter.com/axios/status/962067641463549952

It’s time for another Olympics, which means it’s once again time for the world’s finest athletes to parade about in a bunch of flag-themed outerwear. My boss thought it would be a good idea to give an overview of what these proud Olympians will be wearing in PyeongChang, even though I shop at places that have “Outlet” and “Maxx” in their names and have worn a tie to work approximately once in my 20 years at The Washington Post.

I am, by any measure, deeply unfashionable and thus wholly unsuited for this assignment.

    But please, read on.

US Olympic curling team to wear apparel from Columbus retailer

Columbus menswear retailer Pursuit aims to dress customers for the big moments in their lives.

      And the Olympics certainly qualifies.

Pursuit is providing suits, dress shirts and accessories for the Team Shuster curling team that will represent the U.S. at the Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

The thing about the Norwegians is that they consistently don’t give a fuck.

They’re a superb curling team, but they always use their sporting attire to take the piss – and laugh themselves stupid as they do it.

          I dearly love the Norwegians.

“Editors were too deferential given his longevity…”

Sooooooooo they kept him on despite the fact that he’s a raging white supremacist misogynist homophobe. Sooooo the take away here is he was kept on out of his accommodated entitlement. Not by his talent or his ability…..that’s how I should read this right?

    Did I get that right?

    • Lars Littlefield

      S’riight

      • Cuberly Deux

Sort of violates his own premise in his article there don’t it.

        • You’re looking for consistency from a right-winger?

Nah, just stating the obvious…..I tend to do that too much….lol….

ATTENTION: Today is National Pizza Day.

Now do’t you all fee better? 🙂

    • Cuberly Deux

      Whooo hoo!

Making spanakopita today…..does that qualify as greek pizza?

      • Lars Littlefield

Sure. Why not. Luis makes homemade pizza with a partially baked crust , covers it in Mexican-style ricotta, mozzarella, sautéed red onions, and three kinds of pickled hot peppers. He insists that’s pizza. So, go for it.

        • Cuberly Deux

          Ooooooo that sounds wonderful.

Hold the peppers though….lordy do they do a number on my gut.

          • Lars Littlefield

I made a large frittata using up a couple of giant pasilla chiles, cherry tomatoes, diced onions and the last of some cheese this morning. He asked me where I learned to make a Spanish tortilla, then he found a can of pickled sliced jalapenos and dumped them all over his serving. Said it wasn’t hot enough.

I told him it was a frittata. He insisted it was a Spanish tortilla. I googled Spanish tortilla and fuck me runnin’, a Spanish tortilla and a frittata are basically the same thing.

          • Cuberly Deux

OMG…..I’d be laid up cramping for a week if I ate that.

            lol…sorry, that was probably TMI…lol…

Canada is like a full 24 hours away in time zones, right?
Because I had pizza last night.

      • McSwagg

Their days are much shorter than ours in the winter so they do get several days ahead of us. But in the summer, their days are much longer so we catch back up to them.

        • Mikey

ugh trust me.. the winter days feel WAAAAAAAAAY longer with the arctic cold.
          🙂

          • McSwagg

I had first hand experience of that when I lived in Helsinki, Finland.

  • Note to John Moody: You don’t f*ck with the US Olympic Committee.

  • Adam

The title of this is completely 100% wrong. He’s saying that’s what it IS, not should be, and saying it’s bad.

  • Eric

First of all, “darker, gayer, different” sounds awesome. Second, your hair color is definitely 2 out of 3 of those things. Don’t try it at home, kids.

  • LarryChemEngr

I don’t understand his claim that the US Olympics are trying to attract a diverse group of athletes. Olympic champions achieve the privilege of competing in the Olympics by winning lower level competitions. So what does “attracting a diverse group of athletes” even mean? Either you’ve won competitions or you haven’t, regardless of any efforts of anybody to attract diversity.

Does anyone know what this buffoon is even talking about?

    • Elsewhere1010

He’s a buffon that know that only white males should win Olympic medals, or vote, or own property.

    • McSwagg

In the “good ol’ days”, those “darkies, queers, and others” wouldn’t have been allowed to even compete in the qualifying rounds. Basically we aren’t so much trying to “attract” diversity, rather we are “allowing” diversity to flourish naturally unimpeded.

  • Generic Commenter
