White House Knew About Domestic Abuse Allegations But Worked To Keep Rob Porter On Staff Anyway

Talking Points Memo reports:

When White House staff secretary Rob Porter announced Wednesday that he would resign following allegations of domestic abuse, the White House was still circulating statements defending Porter. However, despite the White House’s projection of ignorance about the accusations against Porter, several reports reveal that administration officials were aware of the allegations from Porter’s ex wives before the news broke publicly and worked to keep him on staff anyway.

Top aides in the White House were aware that allegations of domestic abuse were holding up Porter’s application for a full security clearance, CNN and Politico reported. Chief of staff John Kelly, who worked closely with Porter, was among the officials who knew about the accusations, per Politico, and some officials were aware of the allegations for months, according to CNN.

Watching Lawrence last night was a little difficult but he did a good job on the Rob Porter story.

    • Hank

Having dealt with women who have been abused by their husbands/significant others, I would love to have a copy of his opening, that gave al the reasons, why “I Stayed”! Everyone in an abusive relationship, should be given a copy to read!

    • Andymac3

His reading of the ex wifes answer to why she stayed sent chills down my back, it was so descriptive of how domestic abuse is based on power and fear.

    • JP

This just broke my heart. I felt every word and related to it. Irs so sick how people will defend a monstee and in .y case, i was defending my abuser.

UK under pressure over Bermuda same-sex marriage repeal

      – Government urged to explain why it gave permission for Bermuda to repeal rights

‘Following the move the [out and gay] Labour MP Chris Bryant secured an urgent question in the House of Commons to ask why the foreign secretary, Boris Johnson, approved the move.’

Boris dodged answering and instead sent a junior minister in his place to weasel word excuses.
‘The new civil partnership law met European human rights standards, [the junior minister] Baldwin said, telling MPs that ministers had limited powers over British overseas territories, which were “separate, self-governing jurisdictions with their own democratically elected representatives that
      have the right to self-government”.
Responding, [Chris] Bryant said this was not good enough. “However the
government tries to dress this up, it is a backward step for human rights in Bermuda, and in the overseas territories,” he said.
“Gay and lesbian Bermudians have been told that they aren’t quite equal to everyone else. They’ve been told that they don’t deserve – this is the word being used – the full marriage rights that other Bermudians deserve.”
Another effect of this, Bryant said, was that Cunard and P&O ships registered in Bermuda could no longer hold same-sex marriages at sea.
He said: “Does the minister not really worry that when she tells the Russians to respect LGBT rights in Chechnya, or when she tries to convince India or Pakistan or Indonesia to change the law to benefit LGBT people, those countries will just laugh at her, and say: look, the first territory in the world to repeal same sex marriage is British Bermuda, and they did it with your express permission?”
Bryant asked Baldwin to provide fuller details of discussions with Bermuda, and whether Johnson or other ministers had sought to persuade the island’s government against their action.
Baldwin came under pressure over the issues from MPs from a series of parties, including the Conservative Nigel Huddleston, the SNP’s [Scottish National Party’s] Carol Monaghan and Jamie Stone of the Liberal Democrats. Several pressed her to find out more details of Johnson’s discussions.
Responding for Labour, the shadow Foreign Office minister, Helen Goodman, said she disagreed with Baldwin’s arguments. She said: “When it comes to the rights of British citizens there should be no such thing as a
      balancing act.”
LGBT rights groups said domestic partnerships amounted to a second-class status and it was unprecedented for a jurisdiction to take away the legal right to marriage after it had been granted.
“Governor Rankin and the Bermuda parliament have shamefully made Bermuda the first national territory in the world to repeal marriage equality,” said Ty Cobb, the director of Human Rights Campaign Global.

About half a dozen same-sex marriages that took place in Bermuda between the supreme court ruling in May 2017 and the repeal will continue to be recognised under the new law.

John Kelly should enjoy the small amount of time while his head is still conjoined to his shoulders in this administration.

    • canoebum

At this point, he’s just another co-conspirator.

  • gaycuckhubby

And his new girlfriend was apparently involved in trying to keep him on board. Hope Hicks. Seems like some pretty big conflict of interest issues here

    • Bambino

We will see how long before she get beaten up by the abuser.

      • TCinBerkeley

From all accounts she is used to being mistreated by the President, so not a shock that she is with an abuser in her personal life.

Perhaps after she escapes the WH, she will get some help and perspective.

        • Bambino

The abused often bought into the charm of the abusers initially. Some managed to escape their trappers, a few are like moths flopping to an open flame oblivious to their past experience.

    • Gerry Fisher

I wonder what her childhood trauma is, putting up with Trump’s verbal abuse (“Best piece of tail Corey will ever get”), dating Lewindowski, and then dating Porter.

      • RaygunsGoZap

Maybe there is no trauma and this is her grift. My guess has been that she’s angling to be a politcal wife and put work behind her.

      • Robert K Wright

Doesn’t need to be ANY childhood trauma. Women can be just as power hungry as men. She is the center of Trumps Universe. Has been for years. Wouldn’t surprise me if she’s the one actually running the show. He’s got dementia, it’s obvious, so his personal secretary would have a whole lot of power.

      • Or to be on her knees steaming cheetalini’s pants, while he is still wearing them!

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

It has not been reported yet, but some people are saying Hope, Porter, and Lewandowsky were involved in repeated 3 ways.

    • RaygunsGoZap

      Hope Hicks is Cheryl/Carol Tunt. She’s pro-choking.

Hope Hicks has terrible taste in men. I’ll be amazed if that doesn’t catch up with her soon.

The real scandal is both Rob Porter and Jared Kushner had/have ‘temporary security clearances’ because of the threat of blackmail, but were/are allowed to participate in all kinds of decisions in this White House.

    • Steve Smith

Where is Jared? He seems to have vanished. Maybe Ivanka murdered him and he’s buried under the patio………

      • Steven in Texas

SHALL WE PRAY? That of course is rhetorical.

        tots & pears anyone?

      • BobSF_94117

We should get word to her that another_steve would pay good money for him. No point in tearing up the patio when there’s $$$ to be made.

        • bzrd

but another_steve will never let on how comfortable his basement has become in the past week

      • Hmm, Another Steve has been very quiet of late. Maybe he snuck in, kidnapped him and now has him happily confined in his playroom?

    • Smokey

Interim Clearance can be granted until a final determination is made. In my world there are restrictions on what those employees can access; the WH seems to have no rules. Of course during week one of the tRump administration 6 employees were removed for security concerns.

    • JustDucky

The violence escalated to where Porter was choking his wife. ”

Holy fucking fuck. He was probably going to kill her. The Mormon Bishops she talked to told her to stay and to keep her mouth shut even though he was probably going to kill her.

“Prior non-fatal strangulation was associated with greater than six-fold odds (OR 6.70, 95% CI 3.91–11.49) of becoming an attempted homicide, and over seven-fold odds (OR 7.48, 95% CI 4.53–12.35) of becoming a completed homicide.”

      • Ninja0980

A gay ex-Mormon I know wasn’t the first person in his family to be kicked out of the church and shunned from family and friends.
His aunt also got the same treatment, not for being LGBT but daring to leave her husband instead of trying to make it work with someone who was physically and emotionally abusive.
A no no to the Church who can’t stand to see women stand up for themselves.

      • JP

My abuser started casually gripping me by thw back of my neck when he wanted me to focus on him. Then it became more forceful. The last straw was when he picked me up by ny neck and threw me on the ground. Then picked me up by ny neck and slammed me against the wall before flinginf me to the couch. I called a hotline and they said if they can choke you they can and likely will you. Yet, i stayed

    • I’ve known a few Mormon wives who were abused by their husbands, and were also cautioned about leaving him, or going to the police. There is a very good reason why so many devout Mormon wives are addicted to valium-like drugs. They can’t stand their lives and see no way out, especially when everyone they know tell them to stay, that it’s their fault…

  • skyweaver

Absolutely rage-inducing. I hate these assholes that clearly believe hitting your wife is the equivalent of stealing a hotel towel.

  • Bambino

The current administration is just bringing Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaids Tale into reality.

Of course Trump was willing to overlook it, after all, it was just a little locker room spousal abuse.

    Who’s bangin’ Jethrine?

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

Get that Racist POS Kelly out of there !

  • The_Wretched

I think I have an idea on the why now question. A former girl friend (post both wives) saw that Porter was with Hope Hicks and feared for her safety. Her coming forward sets the timing.

    • boatboy_srq

I was wondering whether Porter might have hinted at helping himself to some tRump#ssy. That would do it too.

  • alc2018
    • Damn! That son of a devil really smacked the shite out of her. Looks as if he used his fist on her face. Why the fuck didn’t he go to jail for spousal abuse? How did this fucker get security clearance?

      • thatotherjean

He doesn’t actually have a security clearance. He has a “temporary” clearance–and has had it for over a year–but he never got the real thing.

  • boatboy_srq

So, Lord Dampnut (and Kelly) apparently think that not only can you grab p#ssy, but you can beat p#ssy too.

    How thoroughly unsurprising.

    • bzrd

it has been reported that the dump beat up Ivana for recommending the scalp surgery to cover the thinning hair
they have to defend the scum so their fellow travelers won’t focus on the turd mafia

  • It Takes a Village, People

The Republican electorate literally does not care about this. They have a system in place in which the women are blamed for their own abuse. That’s not changing.

    • Dayglo

While most of us see “The Handmaid’s Tale” as a dystopian nightmare, they view it as a romantic comedy.

      • I read the book ages ago and have just started watching the show. Damn, it was nightmarish on paper but bone chilling horrific on tv.

  • Paula

Remember when we thought Kelly might be a stabilizing thing in the White House?

    • He stabilized cheat-alini right into the furthest reaches of the right. There would have been a DACA path by now if it wasn’t for ol’ 45’s handlers pushing him ever further right, right, right. Twice he agreed with the Dems that something had to be done, and twice between talking to them and them arriving The Bloated Orange one had had his mind changed.

  • David Walker

So what’s the problem? Miss Sarah isn’t afraid to be seen with him. Surely, we can trust Miss Sarah’s instincts… But why is she wearing sunglasses on an obviously cloudy day? (My apologies to all who have suffered domestic violence. I hate the duplicity of this regime. Again, I apologize to all of you. Sarah and this disgusting excuse for a man, however, deserve all the scorn that can be heaped upon them.)

    • RaygunsGoZap

Miss Sarah feels safe because no man can get his hands around that neck and punching her in the face is like punching a brick filled with other bricks.

  • Cuberly Deux

Yeesh! Photo is like a lifeless eyes collection. Three people in the pic and nobody’s there.

  • joe ho

Kelly is quite the fellow traveler.

Again our media fails us with its false narrative of Kelly as voice of sanity and restraint.

  • Robert K Wright

I’m not sure why anyone is confused as to when the Administration knew. Both wives stated that they informed the FBI when they were doing his background check. They have known since day one.

  • Slippy_World
  • Ninja0980

And yet it won’t matter to the media as much because he doesn’t have a vagina and isn’t black.

  • Lumpy Gaga

Unfair! Those two sluts were just too lazy to get off their asses and out of the way of Porter’s fists.

  • This puts the cherry on the sundae on describing how this administration truly feels about women. If they all knew he was a serial wife abuser and still hired him, that is very telling of just how little they value women.

It’s ok to grab ’em by their pussies.

They have made it nearly impossible for women in many areas to have access to birth control, health checks and abortion.

Schools are not important to them. But then most of them were born with a diamond spoon in their mouths and haven’t ever set foot inside of a public school.

SNAP programs, CHIP programs, Headstart programs, and so on are all programs which have been cut that are vital to many women to provide a meal on the table and a leg up on doing well in school.

  • John T

Don’t lose sight of the fact that Trump supporters *like* that the White House is overflowing with abusers.

Trump supporters cheer when women get beat up. This is what they voted for, and poll after poll shows that they’re happy with what they got.

  • thatotherjean

Every time John Kelly opens his mouth, he gets less impressive. At this point, he seems to fit right in with the rest of the pathetic occupants of the White House. There are no adults in any of the rooms.

  • Tor
    • -M-

Not so clean cut and wholesome as they pretend.

Borin’ Orrin Hatch weighs in (via NYTimes):

Porter once worked for Senator Orrin G. Hatch, Republican of Utah, and in The Daily Mail, the senator categorically dismissed the accusations and, whether he meant to or not, the women making them. “Shame on any publication that would print this — and shame on the politically motivated, morally bankrupt character assassins that would attempt to sully a man’s good name,” he said.

Later, after the black-eye photograph of Holderness was published, Hatch issued a statement saying that domestic violence is “abhorrent.” But after that, he gave an interview in which he said he hoped Porter would “keep a stiff upper lip” and not resign. “If I could find more people like him, I would hire them,” said Hatch, describing Porter as “basically a good person.”

Orrin Hatch deserves to be punched in the face AND nuts. Repeatedly.

    And a P.S.:

Porter and both of his ex-wives are Mormons, and, speaking to The Intercept, Willoughby described confiding in a Mormon official about her husband’s fits of rage. She was told to think about how Porter’s career might suffer if she spoke out. Powerful people in Washington seem to have been similarly worried, first and foremost, about protecting the ambitious and pedigreed young man.

Is there a fuckin’ Mormon anywhere that’s worth a good goddamn?
