Pentagon: Trump’s Military Parade Might Not Be In DC

Reuters reports:

The Pentagon on Thursday said it was not certain that the Washington-area would host a parade requested by President Donald Trump to honor the U.S. military.

“We don’t know that. There are options and we will explore those and the president will ultimately decide,” said Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White, adding that the U.S. Army was taking the lead in creating options for the event.

The White House has asked the Pentagon to explore a celebration of “America’s great service members,” after the Republican president marveled at the Bastille Day military parade he attended in Paris last year. Critics have argued that a parade could cost millions of dollars, at a time the Pentagon wants more stable funding for an overstretched military.

Let’s be clear on one thing…. The parade will NOT be to honor the men & women of our military. It will be to HONOR DONNIE TRUMP, and ONLY DONNIE!

Donnie never does anything for anyone else, it’s always ALL about DONNIE!

    • Uncle Mark

Wouldn’t a military parade before the President be the best way to conduct a military coup? I wonder what Donnie Dotard would do if folks on twitter started rumors of a military coup via the parade. Would we have a military purge and/or blowback from the military against the Stupid Stalin?

Someone else here, yesterday I think, posted a link to a video about Anwar Sadat’s assassination in 1981. I would condone the squatter, if he is able, to think twice about a parade.

  • Paula

Donnie will demand 5th Avenue and lots of ticker tape.

    • Reality.Bites

Actually the big problem with a parade is they move and take place along public roadways.

If you keep the public away, it’s a very bizarre parade. And if you let the public in, they’ll let the soldiers know they support them, but not Trump.

I’m betting this turns into another British State Visit – can’t happen because it will only embarrass Trump.

There’s a story about it at the Hill and a few other sources. What’s concerning is that the GOP is game playing with access to Campbell and release of the transcripts/tapes of the (not under oath) committee interview.

          Edited to add:

          From Fox:
“But this week, Democrats have charged that Campbell’s statements and the Republican interest in them is a tactic to distract from the larger Russia probe clouding the Trump administration.

Democrats have accused Republicans of making “wild claims” against Clinton.

“Republicans have been talking directly to this individual while refusing to grant Democratic members access, despite multiple requests,” Ranking Members of the House oversight and intelligence committees, Elijah Cummings, D-Md., and Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said in a statement. “During this same time period, Republicans have been making wild and unsubstantiated allegations against Secretary Clinton on national television based on this individual’s information.”

Cummings and Schiff said that the Justice Department provided them with a “detailed briefing” that “directly contradicts these Republican allegations.”

Cummings and Schiff said Campbell never provided any evidence or made allegations regarding Clinton or the Clinton Foundation in any of their interactions with him.

The ranking members claimed that the Justice Department stated that “at no point did [the individual] provide any allegation of corruption, illegality, or impropriety on Clinton, the Clinton Foundation, President Clinton, the Uranium One deal, or CFIUS,” and said there were “no allegations of impropriety or illegality” regarding Clinton in the documents they reviewed.

Yup, the alternative reality talking point du jour, all based on the assertions of one person, Douglas Campbell. Campbell is supposedly alleging that Russia paid millions to a US lobbying firm to influence Clinton through the Clinton Foundation.

      • billbear1961

I just found THIS, Tim, from yesterday:

“Democrats: Justice Department Statements Contradict Republican Claims on Uranium One, Clinton”

        https://www.snopes.com/2018/02/07/doj-contradicts-republican-claims/

        The bulk of the article:

On 6 January 2018, House committee members Elijah E. Cummings and Adam Schiff addressed a letter to their GOP counterparts, Trey Gowdy and Devin Nunes, quoting DOJ officials as saying they had “serious credibility concerns” regarding the testimony of an informant heretofore touted as possessing “explosive” evidence on Clinton’s involvement.

Moreover, those same Department of Justice officials said, “at no point did [the individual] provide any allegation of corruption, illegality, or impropriety on Clinton, the Clinton Foundation, President Clinton, the Uranium One deal, or CFIUS [Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States].” Nor did they find evidence of illegality or impropriety on Clinton’s part in any of the documents reviewed by the DOJ.

The informant has been identified as Douglas Campbell, a lobbyist who acted as a confidential source in the FBI’s investigation of a bribery and kickback scheme involving Vadim Mikerin, the former head of the U.S. division of Rosatom, prior to the approval of the Uranium One deal in 2010. Through his lawyer, Campbell has expressed concerns about the fact that the Uranium One deal was approved despite his informing the agency how corrupt Rosatom was.

But DOJ officials had their own concerns regarding Campbell’s reliability, summarized as follows in Cummings and Schiff’s letter:

Career attorneys initially planned to build their case against Mikerin based on evidence provided by this individual. However, they began to have “serious credibility concerns” because of “inconsistencies” between the individual’s statements and documents they obtained as part of the investigation.
After interviewing the individual and reviewing the documents they had obtained, prosecutors determined that there was a “high chance” that he had begun engaging in illegal activity earlier than he initially disclosed—and that he had concealed those actions from the FBI.
As a result, Justice Department officials working the case began to have “serious concerns” with using the individual as a witness. They “assessed” that the individual “would not present as a good witness” and “did not want to rely on him at trial.”
Because Justice Department officials could not trust this individual, they decided instead to pursue alternate charges against Mikerin that would not rely on his testimony.
Justice Department officials said it was a “godsend” that they had another avenue to charge Mikerin that relied on evidence other than this individual’s testimony. Mikerin ultimately was sentenced to 48 months in prison in 2015 for money laundering and violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
Justice Department officials confirmed that they do not plan to use the testimony of this individual in any future prosecution.
Most importantly, Justice Department officials explained that this individual never provided any evidence or made any allegations regarding Secretary Clinton or the Clinton Foundation in any of their interactions with him.

Cummings and Schiff say Republican committee leaders have denied Democrats access to the informant for months, all the while issuing statements about how important his testimony will be. The Democrats’ letter opens with a request for a transcript of an interview the Republicans say they have scheduled with Campbell some time this week.

The Justice Department has neither confirmed nor denied the statements attributed to DOJ officials in the letter. Our request to the department for comment has thus far gone unanswered.

It’s all just more BS to inoculate the Trump base from ever being able to absorb and deal with the truth about who is running the country.

They straight up lie. You can’t take anything they claim at face value. This is just some more nonsense to deflect from Russian interference in the presidential election to help TRUMP. Trump, the President, who signed a law to sanction Russia and then turned around and disregarded his own law. That Trump!

By the way, if Moscow paid millions in bid to influence Hillary, why isn’t Trump sanctioning Russia? Why aren’t Republicans up in arms demanding that Trump punish Russia for that?

    • Lizard

Why should they? D.C. went over 90% for Hillary and have had their needs consistently ignored by Republicans. Such a parade would probably close down major routes for a week, causing congestion on already congested roads, and tanks would damage the asphalt with D.C. on the hook for repairs. Plus, can you imagine the security? What a nightmare.

We celebrate the troops on Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day/Armistice Day, and Independence Day, holidays that are focused on them and their sacrifices throughout history. Beat! beat! drums!—blow! bugles! blow!
Through the windows—through doors—burst like a ruthless force,
Into the solemn church, and scatter the congregation,
Into the school where the scholar is studying,
Leave not the bridegroom quiet—no happiness must he have now with his bride,
Nor the peaceful farmer any peace, ploughing his field or gathering his grain,
So fierce you whirr and pound you drums—so shrill you bugles blow.

      Beat! beat! drums!—blow! bugles! blow!
      Over the traffic of cities—over the rumble of wheels in the streets;
Are beds prepared for sleepers at night in the houses? no sleepers must sleep in those beds,
No bargainers’ bargains by day—no brokers or speculators—would they continue?
Would the talkers be talking? would the singer attempt to sing?
Would the lawyer rise in the court to state his case before the judge?
Then rattle quicker, heavier drums—you bugles wilder blow.

      Beat! beat! drums!—blow! bugles! blow!
Make no parley—stop for no expostulation,
Mind not the timid—mind not the weeper or prayer,
Mind not the old man beseeching the young man,
Let not the child’s voice be heard, nor the mother’s entreaties,
Make even the trestles to shake the dead where they lie awaiting the hearses,
So strong you thump O terrible drums—so loud you bugles blow.

Don’t forget shooting their mouths and guns off!

  • BearEyes

Make a CGI movie. He won’t know the difference

  • William
  • Tom Mears

There are any number of military bases around DC. They can set up a reviewing stand for Donny and a few of his pals. Fox News can take a camera crew and they can march all manner of shit past him for the cameras. If they frame the shot right it will look just like the real thing. And cost a fraction.

    • Treant

He’s got dementia, so you only need one block’s worth of stuff and people. Just keep marching the same things past him. He’ll never remember.

    • coram nobis

Good point, and the 3rd Regiment at Ft. Myers is a parade unit with lots of pretty uniforms. However, Our Gross Domestic Pompous wants tanks and missile launchers and stuff like he saw in Paris. Nearest big maneuver unit is the Marine Expeditionary Force in Camp Lejeune. Nearest Army tank units are probably at Ft. Knox, KY.

If he wants a really big parade he can go to Ft. Hood, TX and see an armored division or two waste a day.

    • Mike in Houston

Don’t give them any ideas… it’s only a matter of time before they trot out a CGI version of the inauguration that shows millions upon millions of people fawning over Hair Furor.

  • coram nobis

Call Pixar and tell them to put a CGI parade together. We could call it Toy Soldier Story I.

  • Dirk Prophet

Bring the troops home and make the parade about them and I’ll go, even though there will be no damn beads and no damn doubloons.

    Happy Mardi Gras!

  • The Idiot in the White House does understand the significance of Bastille Day, does…oh fuck. Nevermind.

    • Halou

Let them eat the most delicious chocolate cake.

  • kaydenpat

Hold it at Mar-a-Lago. That way Trump can play golf when he gets bored by the lock step marching soldiers and tanks.

  • June Gordon

They should do it in the driveway at Mar-a-Largo. And tear the shit out of it, and have the tanks roll over all the landscaping before barreling through a ballroom or two.

  • Henry Auvil

I heard Charlottesville, VA was under consideration.

  • kareemachan

Not certain? DC doesn’t want it, can’t afford it.

And the repugs all nod their heads and lick his ass….

  • infmom

Take all that mysteriously vanished inauguration money and pay someone to do a full VR experience of one of those tank and missile parades in Red Square. Donnie Drooler gets his military orgasm and it won’t cost the rest of us anything.

  • Henry Auvil

Is there a town somewhere in the rust belt called Nurenburg? That would be perfect.

  • Charles Nelson

Mar-A_Lago would be a perfect location for Trump’s military parade! Our Glorious Leader could then drive one of the Abrams to the golf course.

    • drbrentzenobia

Straight down the fairway of one of his golf courses. Have a few tanks cut some donuts on the putting greens.

    • Halou

He would do it if he was able to bill the Pentagon for using the facilities. Much as how he bankrupted the Secret Service by having them pay rent for their agents in Trump Tower and paying him a thousand dollars a day to buy the use of Trump’s own golf carts.

  • TrollopeReader

The parade will probably be through the Korean peninsula ….

  • boobert

Interesting point by john oliver last night. The moron is so mentally damaged looking for approval that nothing will help until he’s dead.

  • Halou

“The White House has asked the Pentagon to explore a celebration of “America’s great service members,” after the Republican president marveled at the Bastille Day military parade he attended in Paris last year.”

    ….
    Seriously?

This is the same president who wanted a grand military parade for his inauguration in January 2017. How exactly can that have been a thing if his attendance at the Bastille Day event wouldn’t happen until many months later? Does he have a time machine? Or the White Power House is lying it’s ass off.

Trump has a mixture of both Putin love and North Korea envy, wanting to emulate the first and surpass the latter. He has wanted to play the tyrant game since before day 1! The reference to Bastille Day is nonsense.

    • EdA

The reference to Bastille Day is not entirely nonsense. The spoiled child was balked of the parade because that mean black guy Obama wouldn’t agree to it. And seeing in person what a glorious sight a bunch of guys with their toys made really reinforced his dented sense of neediness.

I wish that the idiot child could be satisfied with a carton of GI Joe dolls he could play with.

  • Halou

Either the parade will be done at mar-a-liar where he can charge admission and/or facility use fees to every single one of the tens of thousands of troops he will insist be involved. Because what is a “billionaire” if not somebody who makes a living thieving tens of millions of dollars from the taxpayer in schemes ever bolder and more criminal in nature?

Or Dearest Dotard will have the parade worm it’s way down the streets of a heavily liberal city, or one with a large minority population as homage to Oswald Mosley’s march of the British Union of Fascists through Cable Street which, in 1936, had a significant Jewish population. An event that ended in a damned riot and the BUF crying ‘threats to their safey’ to the media which of course printed sympathetic and antisemitic reports the following day.

Threats and provocation, because the very moment there is violence between his “fine people” and black / muslim / hispanic Americans he will order a crackdown unseen in American history.

Trump can either be a greedy asshole, or a racist asshole. Even pretending to be a normal, respectful human being seems beyond him.

  • Jack

Well, somewhere with a street that is comparable to the Champs Elysee.

Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn comes to mind. Start or end at Grand Army Plaza (get it?) Triumphal Arch and all.

Labor Day might be a good time.

  • Friday

When White House staff has to remind Drumph that he can’t handle non-hand-picked audiences.

  • andrew

This proposed military parade has got NOTHING to do with celebrating “America’s great service members.” It has got EVERYTHING to do with feeding the narcissistic Trump’s needy ego.

    • Gianni

Only a total fool could debate the point you make. This is all to give his ego a massive boost. DumDum is only interested in garnering praise, applause, awe, and admiration and a totally wasteful and obnoxious show like this will cause the heads of his base to explode with pride and worship for their god-like leader. How disgusting can it get? Would be really nice, though not about to happen, if Congress would politely inform the President that they have no intention of allowing any funding for a military show of strength.

  • Birmingham. Or someplace in West Texas. (That would be a twofer — show the world how insecure Trump is and scare away the “illegals.”)

  • Gianni

Perhaps DumDum would really like to have this grand military parade in Pyongyang, North Korea? You know, kill two birds with one stone.

    • Gianni

I’m also wondering if DumDum will want the parading soldiers to be goose-stepping like the Nazi’s did or the N.Koreans do?

  • Lee Grupsmith-Pedersen
  • lizdhm

The greater DC area has more than enough traffic problems as it is.

  • EdA

I wish that the idiot child could be satisfied with a carton of GI Joe dolls he could play with. Benedict Trump should be reminded on every possible occasion that he, too, had the chance to be awarded a Purple Heart (which he told the vet who gave him his own he had always wanted) and to march in Army drag five times, and he threw away the opportunity each time it was offered to him.

  • Ann Kah

How about some nice desert area, with the president isolated in the stands in 110° heat and enemy snipers closing in?

  • Pip

Don’t they mean the “Dog and pony show”?
