LIVE VIDEO: Nancy Pelosi Has Been Speaking On DACA For Over 7 Hours, Longest House Speech Since 1909

The Washington Post reports:

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi took the rare step Wednesday of giving a marathon speech supporting Democrats’ attempts to legalize the status of young immigrant “dreamers,” in a bid to pressure Republicans to act.

Pelosi (D-Calif.) began talking shortly after 10 a.m., using her right as minority leader to speak for as long as she wants. She began by saying that she would lead opposition to a broad two-year budget agreement that includes several Democratic priorities but does not address immigration — the topic that has prolonged the spending debate for several months.

The hope is that Pelosi and Democrats — whose support is often needed to pass spending bills in the face of opposition from fiscal conservatives — can pressure House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) to hold votes on immigration legislation, as the Senate is poised to begin doing next week.

“Why should we in the House be treated in such a humiliating way when the Republican Senate leader has given that opportunity in a bipartisan way to his membership? What’s wrong? There’s something wrong with this picture,” Pelosi said.

  • bkmn

    That is stamina.

  • Henry Auvil

Thank you, (former) Madame Speaker, for demonstrating how a democracy works, even in these insane times.

    • Proud MOFO Beaner (bkb)

      And soon-to-be.

  • Well, McConnell did supposedly promise there’d be an immigration bill (including DACA) vote and Ryan decided to break that promise for him.

    Good for Nancy.

  • Slippy_World

In HEELS no less -thank you Leader Pelosi for your courage, https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/39b06df8a461fe7740af5c197b48af9da1bf3456688ce01ffa2881bc99044daa.jpg bravery ,leadership and stamina.

    • another_steve

A bold, final gesture on her part.

I’ve evolved on point, but I’ve come to agree with those who say that the Democratic Party needs new, younger leadership.

People who can mobilize the younger vote.

      • stevenj

        “final”??

I am in her 12th Congressional district. In 2016 she won with 80.87% of the vote. So far I’ve not seen/heard a peep from anyone running against her and the primary is in June. As far as mobilizing the younger vote she has her work cut out for her. With all the tech kids that have moved here in the last 5 years there is plenty of potential.

        • another_steve

“Final” in terms of the House leadership position.

She’s a good and compassionate legislator. The Democratic Party needs her.

          But not as its leader.

          • stevenj

Yes, I think a change in House leadership would be good too. So many on here think she is too old to even be in Congress.

          • another_steve

That “too old to be in Congress” thing is ageism pure and simple. Any progressive who voices it should feel shame.

I look at it purely from a “what’s best for the Democratic Party” perspective.

What’s best, imo, is new and younger leadership that can “connect” with young voters today and get them to go to their polling places come election day.

Mine is a totally pragmatic point of view.

          • Eddie Besketti

Didn’t old man Bernie have a huge following of young people?

          • another_steve

Deluded young people. Idealistic, deluded young people.

Supporting a candidate who has zero chance of winning is feel-good but politically naive.

          • Gay Fordham Prep Grad

As far as I can tell, there is no line of succession for the Democratic leadership, and I don’t see her grooming anyone to take over. Unfortunately everyone does not wake up the next morning.

          • j.martindale

Not NOW! She is doing the right thing. Don’t make this about fucking politics! Everyone shut up about the next Speaker. We have an election in ’18, and this woman is doing more than anyone for the causes that need our support. If you don’t help, just shut up!

      • Dramphooey

I say this in an utmost friendly manner. She’s already said she’s ready to stand aside. There’s no reason to tell her to get out of the way of anyone especially when she is doing something good.

Arthur Schlesinger didn’t want Truman to run again in 1952, which Truman legally could have done. When Truman announced he wasn’t going to run Schlesinger shouted “no! no!” as loud as anyone at the speech.

  • Lazycrockett

Ryan wont do it unless Drumpf supports the bill. Ryan seems to not understand that he is in a different branch of the government. Asshole.

    • clay

      Ryan doesn’t want to understand.

      • evan_or

Ryan wants to be POTUS. All he has to do is wait and not make any waves.

    • lymis

Ryan has hitched his wagon to Trump. He can’t buck Trump at this point. He could have established early on that if necessary, he’d take a stand, but at this point he’s proven he won’t.

  • Publius

Democrats recently controlled the House, Senate (with a filibuster-proof majority at the time the original DREAM Act was tabled), and the presidency. I’m touched by these gestures the Democratic leadership are now making, but I hope that when/if they are able to recapture majorities in Congress, that when push comes to shove they won’t bring water balloons to a cage fight like they did from 2008-2010.

Democratic leadership needs to be as feisty while in power as they are before election time.

    • Dreaming Vertebrate

Putin won’t like that. His puppet is gonna get a beatdown.

      • BobSF_94117

Sometimes I think Putin wants to draw the U.S. into armed conflict. Nothing huge, just destabilizing and scary. Just to have an excuse…

  • ClevelandJim

7 hours?? Hope she had a catheter in!

    • Joe Lumello

      Or Depends.

    • Dreaming Vertebrate

No need. Unlike Trump, she’s not a leaker.

Nancy Pelosi: Leadership, energy, stamina and strength, tireless defender of the people.
Dotard Trump: Weak, low-energy, no stamina, watches TV or tweets until it’s time for his nappy poo and diaper change. Then watches more TV.

  • coram nobis

I like your headlines, Joe. Now I find out that Nancy Pelosi gave a speech in 1909.

    • Bad Tom

She’s been giving the speech ever since. That’s S.T.A.M.I.N.A.

You’d think she would have at least paused in 1920 to celebrate women being given the right to vote – but not our Nancy! She wouldn’t let herself be distracted for a moment!

      • BearEyes

        and backwards

  • Bad Tom

And she ain’t reading Green Eggs and Ham, like Speaker Ryan did.

    • Lumpy Gaga

      Wasn’t that Cruz?

      • Bad Tom

You are right; it was Senator Cruz.
She still made a better choice of what to read. 😉

    • TrollopeReader

That was Cruz in the Senate … his young daughters can’t stand the sight of him, and he really, really, really wanted to read to them …

    • Kruhn

Didn’t know the Majority and Minority Leaders could speak indefinitely. That’s one tough Granny! Good thing Pelosi is doing what Chuck ain’t willing to do. Girl, go full 24 and dislodge the racist Strom Thurmond with the record of the longest speech in Congress.

Someone administer an IV of Gatoraid to her, STAT!

  • S1AMER

Never underestimate this woman. Strength, stamina, political smarts beyond parallel in the House these days, and, above all, one hell of a Democrat!

    Go get ’em, Nancy!

  • Cuberly Deux

Glad she’s doing this. Something has to be done to bring attention to the issue Ryan has no intention of addressing.

Not trying to be a sad sack but what do the Dems have when it comes to a bargaining chip to compel the GOP to act? Ryan and McConnell consistently opt to court the nazi sympathizers in their ranks vs negotiate with Dems.

I don’t have a lot of hope right now.

    • lymis

Pretty much all they have as a bargaining chip is public outrage.

Hicks had Porter in the back door while Trump was fingering her in the front (well, he was fisting, but with those tiny hands it felt like fingering).

I’m shocked, I tell you. Shocked 😳! Just a few weeks ago, Establishment Democrats left DACA recipients twisting in the wind.
That they’d have trust in any GOP thug is beyond me.

  • anne marie in philly

    YOU GO GIRL!

  • Cuberly Deux

So this happened. Not a surprise really.

“GOP fiscal hawks revolt against Senate budget deal”

“The swift backlash from fiscal hawks means that Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and his leadership team will need dozens of Democratic votes to help get the caps-and-funding deal through the lower chamber to avert a government shutdown set for midnight Friday.”

“At the same time, some Republicans predicted a majority of the majority would back the package.”

    http://thehill.com/homenews/house/372805-gop-fiscal-hawks-revolt-against-senate-budget-deal

But will Ryan bring up a DACA deal?

    • BobSF_94117

Isn’t it absurd that any Republican is called a “fiscal hawk”?

      • Cuberly Deux

We have a proven history of the complete failure of Reaganomics to reference. So many ignore it.

  • j.martindale

Good for her! This is an issue of principle. And it is one that Dems could lose on politically. Bravo, Ms. Pelosi, for doing the right thing!

    • Robincho

I’m sorry, but I love her. Plus her husband Paul is hawtter than fuck .

  • Ninja0980

But remember, she’s old and needs to retire even though the GOP would simply find another boogeyman/woman, even St. Bernie.

  • andrew

Good job as always Congresswoman Pelosi.

    • LesbianTippingHabits

I always thought modern Senate ‘filibusters’ were fake.

  • LesbianTippingHabits

    Wow!

  • Jmdintpa

I admire that but we all know this will not change a thing. If the people will vote maybe just maybe there is a chance something can be done in Nov. However getting people to care enough to vote even if it really means this time saving the republic is another matter. I read today half the country could care less about Russia. WTF maybe we just need to admit America is a failure and split up. I cant and to not want to live with people that stupid and apathetic.

  • justme

and all Republicans ca do is recite green eggs and spam..

  • Nancy Pelosi is an inspiration.

  • One thing to remember — unlike the Senate, there is no filibuster provision in the House. She is doing this because Speaker Ryan is permitting her to. If she were Speaker, she would probably permit the Minority Leader the same privilege (and probably has when she was Speaker – but I cannot remember any Republican Speech in the House lasting as long). The Speaker (or the Speaker’s Majority Party designate) can end any speech whenever he or she wants by calling for a point of order and asking for a floor vote at any time. The House is basically run as a dictatorship at the discretion of the Speaker of the House – the Minority Party cannot even force a vote on a matter against the Speaker’s wishers unless they try to use a relatively rare and difficult parliamentary procedure called a “discharge petition”.

  • JCF

To demonstrate that Pelosi did this quasi-filibuster in heels, Rachel just taped a ruler to the back of one of her (spare) sneakers! LOL

  • JackNasty

    Bless her heart.

  • witch

Is she allowed bathroom breaks ?

  • Jerry Kott

What is ironic about this racist anti-immigration ruse is that something happened this week that was historical directed by an immigrate from a Shithole country. Only proving that immigrates contribute to what has made this Nation great. Elon Musk should have parade in his honor.

  • Paul Michael Fuchs

    I’m Sorry!
She was pathetic! No consideration for others. Even those she claims to represent! Time and Place ONLY served her, NOT those she serves!

    • Gianni

What are you going on about?
