Pentagon Plans Military Parade On Trump’s Orders

The Washington Post reports:

President Trump’s vision of soldiers marching and tanks rolling down the boulevards of Washington is moving closer to reality in the Pentagon and White House, where officials say they have begun to plan a grand military parade later this year showcasing the might of America’s armed forces.

Trump has long mused publicly and privately about wanting such a parade, but a Jan. 18 meeting between Trump and top generals in the Pentagon’s tank — a room reserved for top secret discussions — marked a tipping point, according to two officials briefed on the planning.

Surrounded by the military’s highest ranking officials, including Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Joe Dunford, Trump’s seemingly abstract desire for a parade was suddenly heard as a presidential directive, the officials said.

“The marching orders were: I want a parade like the one in France,” said a military official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the planning discussions are supposed to remain confidential. “This is being worked at the highest levels of the military.”

It’s becoming FRANCE if the article is to believed. I never thought we would sink so low as to imitate such a wretched country.

But really? We had a military parade after the Gulf War. Why is Donny referencing FRANCE(!?) when he could say, “like the one Bush had in the ’91”? Did Marcon brag to Trump in Davos about how big the Bastille Day parades are and snide insinuate that Americans are too namby-pamby to play with their big boy toys in public or something?

Have we not all seen the signs ?
Do we not know what is happening ?
Are we all going to drift with this fascist tide ?

The truth is that Trump/turd wants to be a dictator like his pal Putin.

The truth is that, ‘if Macron can have a big Military Parade, I want one too.’
‘And look at Germany they had lovely parades of soldiers there !’

It is tragic to watch this happening again. This history repeating itself as the Republicans switch from condemning Trump/turd in the Primaries to becoming his Gestapo enablers.

A Government run by military generals. a Congress of sleezy double-crossers, like Nunes, and a Justice Dept. cowed into silence by the Chief Bully.
So who will stand up for the democracy of laws, social justice and decency in public life and affairs ?

But I’ve learned that there’s quite a a big tail to this dog. I fear the the gun-toting NRA, with their Putin money will support this idea.
F uck, Trump/turd will probably invite Putin, just as Macron invited Trump/turd on Bastille Day 2017.

If this does actually happen, the next president should dishonorably discharge every single person who participates in the parade.

      • Grumpy Old Man

NAH – only the officers. Don’t piss on the voiceless.

        • DesertSun59

Indeed. Those who haven’t served lump the enlisteds in with the officers. They are unaware of the two parallel paths. One gives the orders the other can ONLY carry them out.

      • robindaybird

the brass that order it, the grunts don’t exactly have a choice in a matter – most of them joined because there’s literally little else they have in their area to support themselves or families.

        • Kelly Lape

That is demeaning to the qualified and motivated men & women volunteers. We have options. We have marketable skills.

      • Kelly Lape

Sorry no. The parade will be a non-voluntary event and legal order. It is within his power to command this performance.

        • MonochromeMouse

A person has the ability to say “no”, a person doesn’t lose that ability when they join the military. Following orders just because they are orders doesn’t excuse a person. Anyone who participates in a military parade is a fascist, period.

          • Kelly Lape

You are saying everyone in the Military is a Fascist. Do you have any idea how ignorant you sound? A parade is a lawful order – period. American Military personnel obey lawful orders – period. The American Military is specifically organized under civilian control. You can dislike Trump all you like but he is the lawfully elected President and commander in chief.

          • MonochromeMouse

Blind obedience is extremely dangerous, a person who makes a choice to follow an order is just as responsible as the person giving the order. And anyone who would participate in or support a military parade, which serves no purpose other than for the leader to show off and intimidate potential dissidents, is a fascist.

          • Kelly Lape

A member of the United States Armed Forces does not have the luxury to interpret the intentions of an order. We only have the responsibility to decide if it is lawful. We have taken an oath to obey all lawful orders given by competent authority. Until the House and the Senate impeach the President he is legally recognized as THE Competent Authority.

You fail to understand lots of things, but consider this: Ordering the Military to kowtow to his desire to be worshiped will do more harm to his reputation within the services than any gain from “intimidating” those who would be influenced by such a display.

          • MonochromeMouse

“A member of the United States Armed Forces does not have the luxury to interpret the intentions of an order. ” That does not make them not complicit or responsible, a person is responsible for their own actions regardless of if they were given orders or took an oath.

          • Kelly Lape

Explain to me how the order is “unlawful” or stfu.

          • MonochromeMouse

I never said the order was unlawful, it doesn’t matter if it’s lawful or not it’s immoral. If someone follows an immoral but “lawful” order then they are just as responsible as the person who gave them the order. Any member of the military who participates in trump’s fascist parade is complicit.

        • dzerres

not sure about that. Not sure if that would be a legal order (in the military you must follow LEGAL orders; you don’t masacre a village just because Lt William Calley said so. Then there’s the funding. All the Pentagon has to do is say that’s not in our budget as approved by Congress. Put it in next year’s budget, have Congress pass it, and we’ll parade. That would be the honorable thing to do. The dishonorable thing would be to say to Cadet Bone Spurs, “yes sir, yes sir, three bags full”.

O/T: While we’re on the subject of bad news

Snyder and his administration didn’t cut it either, apparently ignoring the reading mission the same way they ignored the Flint water crisis: Third-grade reading proficiency in Flint, where Snyder allowed the water — and children — to be poisoned by lead, dropped from 41.8% in 2013, the first year of the poisoning, to 10.7% last year.

    That’s a nearly three-quarters drop.

Read it again: That’s nearly a three-quarters drop in third-grade reading proficiency among children whose lives were affected by lead poisoned water during the Flint water crisis.

  • My nephew is being stop-lossed after multiple Iraq deployments, the last of which nearly killed him (IED, still has shrapnel in his chest and he needed to be resuscitated multiple times).

After finishing out his last enlistment as an MP in Kosovo (yes, we still have people there), he trained and got a job as a state trooper. His wife is preggers and for her it’s always a problem pregnancy. They have another child, a toddler.

A few weeks ago, a letter arrived telling him he was being reactivated. He’s supposed to put his entire life on hold again and abandon his family. He’s to be deployed to Niger. Y’know, the same place where mercenaries didn’t check to see if they had everyone they were supposed to help evacuate and that one guy appears to have been tortured and executed. The same place Donald refers to as a “shithole country.”

I am sick to fucking death of Cadet Bonespurs spending America’s treasure and lives and blood to satisfy his sick megalomania narcissism. Impeach the motherfucker now.

          • Until Dubya launched his two wars, ‘stop loss’ reactivations were extremely rare.

And in truth, my nephew’s injuries should’ve qualified him for immediate retirement disability pay. Instead they made him finish out his enlistment—albeit in a much safer job, but that just meant some other grunt had to take his place.

I still can’t believe they’re dragging him back in.

        • killreligion

I am sorry for him and your family. But I want to comment on “trooper” for a cop and “troops” for soldiers

Not your fault, it’s common usage that started about 20 years ago. But why? A group of troopers is a troop in proper usage/state cop speak

But a group of soldiers should be a troop while for some reason it’s a group of troops. Why is troop used for a single person or troops for more than one soldier when troops should be reserved for more than one group?. Why not trooper?

Some reporters commented about it during the Iraq war but then gave up it seems.

    • Publius

That’s a shame. Fine print is a helluva thing. Most people don’t know that servicemembers incur a service obligation that is usually double what they agreed would be their active or reserve service — the leftover obligation is served in the Individual Ready Reserve, or IRR. The standard obligation is eight years, and usually continues in increments of that duration upon reenlistment. Considering he both deployed to Iraq multiple times and re-classed from infantry to military police, that indicates he’s reenlisted at least once.

In any case, a servicemember can always seek discharge from the IRR, especially if he has suffered a disability from an IED explosion.

      • The commitment is supposed to be a two-way street, one where the military doesn’t just throw away lives in wars of choice.

He did try for a discharge, both after the IED attack and then when he was mustered out at the end of his MP tour. They turned him down.

        • Publius

Yeah I mean I get it. As a veteran I can attest that the prospect of being plucked from IRR is a constant anxiety. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that we agreed to the service obligation.

It’s a shame he was turned down. I don’t know what he’s tried, who he’s talked to, or even how motivated he is to ETS, but the best advice I would give him is to treat the hell out of his disability, that way he’ll have a well-documented disability that was aggravated by continued military service. This will get him closer to a 100% VA rating.

      • Mark_in_MN

After someone has finished their military enlistment, they should have the right to say “no” to a reserve service assignment, the absolute and unquestioned right to say “no” without any consequences at all for any reason at all.

        • Publius

I agree absolutely, and I think most people do also. This is why fine print matters. As I said, in general, service obligations are eight years. In any case, incurring a service obligation is entirely voluntary. It’s a very serious and consequential decision.

However in the case of the OP’s nephew, I do think it’s very troubling that his request for a discharge was denied, in light of a possible disability.

He even said “the military supports trump, we all love him but….”

          • killreligion

I get your point-this kid was clearly ignorant. But is it about growing up, or bad education, no other options?

I had so much opportunity-I could get any education, pursue any career, so I can’t really relate.

I just think we have a lot of kids from broken economies/educational system/families that it’s not only growing up-we’ve failed all these millions of families encouraged to have families within a broken system.

It’s part of our larger problem with education and economic opportunity-I hate we have huge swaths of ignorant masses but I can’t blame all of them (all, some willfully accept deplorable status)

Republican control of the Senate – where Trump’s next possible Supreme Court nominee will be confirmed – is a a big concern though.

      • Halou

        I’m not so optimistic.

Until Trump took power American military power was never in doubt, it’s very existence was proof enough of it’s capabilities and the commitment of the political leadership to use it as and when necessary.
But now that Trump is in charge, his Russophilia compromising the integrity of the NATO alliance, and with one of his first acts as president being to ask his advisers how best to invade Poland (I shit you not!)… Trump needs a show of force to convince himself and others that America is still a force to be reckoned with.

Naturally he gets it all wrong though. Russia will not be intimidated by it’s own vassal showcasing exactly what it has available to enforce Moscow’s will around the world.. And to have the show of force by a far-right president in a city that is among the most liberal and left-leaning in America, the domestic intentions are surely not going to be lost on anyone.

    Friends,
To have a Military Parade in Washington DC, one needs the permission of the Mayor of that city , I presume.

We need to think about this and develop strategies to defeat the fascists, by fair means or foul.

  • Sam_Handwich

maybe the military will seize the opportunity to stage a coup

  • My answer:
    1. In the USA “military parades” are held, traditionally, at the following occasions –
for the commemoration of the dead at State Funerals — and on Memorial Day on a smaller scale. We used to have military components at Inaugural Events, sans tank and armoured corps and large motorized vehicles holding missiles for example, simply because we do not want to spend the money repairing all the damage to the asphalt in Washington, D.C. (I am being serious — this is a major issue).
At the end of major national wars, like the Civil War and the two World Wars
We also hold “military parades” and on the 4th of July and on Veteran’s Day in towns and villages but on a celebratory basis — not to “show off” to any other power or nation which we never have felt the need to do.
    2. The USA is one of two nations which can destroy the rest of world many times over with its nuclear arsenal. We have not seen the need, nor the benefit, of advertising this capability since 1945 to the rest of the world. And prior to the 20th century, we were content to follow the advice of our founding father, George Washington, and generally stay out of foreign affairs that did not concern our hemisphere. The Founding Fathers generally found European displays of militarism and uniform dress gauche, undemocratic (small D), and frankly, not worth the money.

    • Ivanka maintained a relationship with her father that was in no way conventional. She was a helper not just in his business dealings, but in his marital realignments. If it wasn’t pure opportunism, it was certainly transactional. For Ivanka, it was all business — building the Trump brand, the presidential campaign, and now the White House. She treated her father with a degree of detachment, even irony, going so far as to make fun of his comb-over to others. She often described the mechanics behind it to friends: an absolutely clean pate — a contained island after scalp-reduction surgery — surrounded by a furry circle of hair around the sides and front, from which all ends are drawn up to meet in the center and then swept back and secured by a stiffening spray. The color, she would point out to comical effect, was from a product called Just for Men — the longer it was left on, the darker it got. Impatience resulted in Trump’s orange-blond hair color.

And he thinks a military parade is appropriate ?

Has he ever watched the British commemorations at the Cenotaph on Nov. 11th ?
It’s about peace and memory, not vaingloriousness.

      • clay

November 11 is the Pentagon’s suggestion, to de-politicize it. Right now, they’re more afraid of being turned into a domestic partisan tool, than shown off as fighting units.

        • pj

they should be concerned about how this will look. and it dosent look good no matter when they do it.

I saw the original article. Kelly continues to expose himself as an honorless racist and misogynist. Listening to him, I feel like I’m hearing again all those “adult” men telling “jokes” at the feed store back in Sand Flat, Texas.

Does anyone ever get the feeling that Drumpf is just doing this to see what he can get away with? And with every success, he just pushes the envelope even further. I know he lacks any intellect whatsoever to actually plan anything and it’s all decided on a whim but still…it has that feeling.

Songwriters: Gordon Sumner / Serge Prokofieff
(subtle changes to lyrics are mine)
(performed by Sting as the song “Russians”)

In Europe and America there’s a growing feeling of hysteria.
Conditioned to respond to all the demands
In the rhetorical speeches of the North Koreans.
MIster Kim Jung-un said, “We will bury you.”
I don’t subscribe to this point of view.
It’d be such an ignorant thing to do
If Koreans love their children too.

How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer’s deadly toy?
There is no monopoly on common sense
On either side of the political fence.
We share the same biology, regardless of ideology.
Believe me when I say to you,
I hope Koreans love their children too
    There is no historical precedent
To put the words in the mouth of the Orange President?
There’s no such thing as a winnable war,
    It’s a lie we don’t believe anymore.

Mister Drumpf says, “We will protect you.”
I don’t subscribe to this point of view.
Believe me when I say to you,

I really don’t understand why people buy store bought pie crust. I just made one and put it in the fridge overnight in like 10 minutes.

    • Sam_Handwich

can you make a pie crust that looks like a Tide pod?

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I once looked at the ingredients of a store pie crust and there’s a lot of stuff listed.

      • Lazycrockett

        Another reason not too.

    • 2guysnamedjoe

Where do I find reliable pie crust instructions? I tried once, and I followed the instructions to a T. It was a sticky mess. It just kept sticking to the rolling pin. Finally I just rolled it up into a ball and threw it in the garbage.

      • johncAtl

        You threw away PIE crust?

Oh, and not all sticky messes are bad.

      • Dreaming Vertebrate

Try cooling the dough in the fridge before you roll it.
It also sounds like your dough was too moist. Add more flour.

      • Lazycrockett

20 minutes before hand put 1 1/4 cup of self rising flour, a 1 stick of butter diced and 1/4 cup of water in the freezer.

Put flour and butter in a food processor and pulse till it forms crumbs, add water a little at a time, pulse, water, pulse, rest of water, pulse till a ball is formed wrap in plastic wrap for 4 hours or overnight.

When you get ready to roll it our put the pin in the freezer till its cold dust with flour and roll out quickly with the least amount of rolls as possible. put in pie plate and let rest in fridge for 30 minutes.

        • 2guysnamedjoe

Thank you for those details. That recipe I followed was quite loosey-goosie by comparison.

          • Lazycrockett

With crust and thinks like pizza dough, you have to keep everything as cold as possible when working with it.

      • bkmn

The vodka pie crust recipe from Americas Test Kitchen is pretty good. A general rule is you need to hold back a tablespoon or two of water to see if you need it, conversely you may need a tablespoon or two more than the recipe calls for.

        • DoctorDJ

Indeed. I’ve had success with their vodka crust recipe.

      • Talisman

When dealing with pastries, it’s not always about following the recipe exactly. Altitude and humidity can affect the consistency of the dough. Experiment with the amount of flour until you get a good consistency.

It might also be worthwhile to talk to a pastry chef (or a well-versed grandmother) in your area to get an idea of how to adjust for your environment.

      • Guess?

Try rolling it out between two sheets of waxed paper. Chill it first and then dampen the counter before putting 1st waxed paper down, which helps keep it in place.

        • 2guysnamedjoe

Thx. Ill give it a try, if and when I get over the trauma of the last one.

          • sadoldguy

Not trying to give you a hard time, but is a pie crust fail really a trauma?

          • 2guysnamedjoe

High hopes followed by dismal failure put me in a bad mood for a few hours. It was, well, traumatic-ish.

      • sadoldguy

It takes 10 to 20 minutes, if it doesn’t work out the first time give it another go. It’s maybe a dollar and half a sitcom investment.

If Trump gets the kind of parade he wants–the whole “tanks down Pennsylvania Avenue” thing he wanted for his inauguration, taxpayers will be on the hook for many millions to rebuild the road, and roads leading to the parade. They’re not built to carry that much weight. Trump’s an idiot, and the Pentagon appears to be enabling his idiocy.

    Doesn’t surprise me one bit.
Still have a long way to go dealing with bi people in our community, we truly do.

    • DaddyRay

I think there is a deep suspicion that bi people are struggling with declaring themselves gay and that could create trust issues having to remain guarded

      • Ninja0980

That and they’ll leave someone for a woman routine.

        • Jack

I’ve known people who SWORE they were gay, who never intimated to anyone that they might possibly be bi, wind up with opposite sex partners.

One woman, when she told me about her new relationship, said she was losing friends. I assured her that the gender of her partner was immaterial to me. I never heard from me again.

Another was a friend of a friend (let’s call her “Rhonda”). She’d been described to me as “a lesbian separatist.” I was told that she wouldn’t even speak to a man. My friend was Cuban, and legally blind, and liked to walk close to me, often putting her arm through mine. BUT, if we were anywhere that Rhonda might pop up, my friend would keep her distance. Rhonda married a man.

        • JCF

          Or a man!

      • Oscarlating Wildely

….which does say a lot more about assumptions being made about bi people instead of about bisexuality itself.

        • JCF

          This.

    • Oscarlating Wildely

But the generational aspects seem interesting. Several studies have noted that a good portion of Millenials do not consider themselves hetero OR gay but that finding seems to not square with the news that a great amount of Gen Xers– more than Millenials– are the most open to fluidity, being bi, being with someone who is bi, and bi sex. So…. we got done watching Reality Bites and realized we were cool with Ethan Hawke AND Winona Ryder? (I mean, I sure as fuck was…)

When asked if sexuality exists on a spectrum, 34% of men and 20% of women said yes. Generationally, Gen Xers were the most likely to agree, with 46% saying they believed in a sliding scale of sexuality, compared to just 11% of Millennials and 5% of Baby Boomers.

When asked if they would ever date a person who identifies as bisexual, just 30% of men and only 19% of women said they’d be down with it. Once again, Gen Xers were the most open-minded, with 38% saying they’d be OK with a bisexual partner. But just 7% of Millennials and 3% of Baby Boomers felt similarly.

      • JCF

Recognize that some Millenials are as young as 17: they haven’t thought through these things as long as GenXers have—though one could imagine the “would ever date” response would CONTINUE to evolve over one’s lifetime! (only getting broader, not narrower)

  • Blake J Butler

Can someone find information on this race and its status, he was leading by just 66 votes in the district halfway between St. louis and the arkansas border.

One more district, a rural seat about halfway between St. Louis and the Arkansas border, remained too close to call as of 10 p.m. Eastern time. In that race, Democrat Jim Scaggs led Republican Chris Dinkins by just 66 votes out of about 4,100 cast, with ten precincts yet to report. President Trump won that district by an incredible 78 percent to 19 percent margin, making the narrowness of the race even more remarkable

    Off Topic Distraction
Luis made me sit down and watch this new documentary on NatGeo: Lost Treasures of the Snake King. Amazing. I’ve been to most of the Mayan ruins featured in the documentary. But they now have a technology called LIDAR which “sees through” the jungle canopy. So they can map the topography of the land and detect all contours, ruins, temples, buildings, etc. unobstructed by plants. But what is so astonishing is that LIDAR reveals places like Tikal are at least 10 times larger than thought with populations of not 1 million but more like 9 to 10 million residents. In addition, Mayan cities were not just concentrations of temples but were surrounded by enourmous suburbs which span many miles between the cities we know about. There is also verifiable evidence the Mayans had built a huge highway system from the Yucatan to Central Guatemala. Pretty amazing for a culture that didn’t have the wheel. If you have an interest in archaeology of the Meso Americans like I do, it will truly blow your mind.

By the way, my husband is an archaeologist. He trained at and obtained his bachelor degree from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), obtained his Masters from University of Paris-Sorbonne Paris IV, and picked up a doctorate from Stanford. I bumped into him while he served as the director of research for ASU’s Colorado Plateau Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit. I saw and cruised him at the Yucca House National Monument and Mesa Verde where we immediately consummated our mutual lust in his private office. In short, the boy done got hisself some edjewmakashun.

Anyway, when the documentary ended he turned to me an cheekily said, “I told you so.” Look for this documentary and watch. It will change your mind about Meso American culture bigly.

    • Lazycrockett

Saw that on the news last week and its fucking amazing. What once was thought as just a temple complex turns out to be a city of probably a couple of millions. Amazing stuff.

As a young Boy Scout my troop went to DC for a Jamboree. A National Park guide told us that we could see how high the flood waters are in DC by the watermark way up above us on the obelisk.
We looked at the line where the rock was darker below and lighter above and oooohed and awwwwwed.

It was 20 years later I learned that was the line where they quit construction during the Civil War and picked up again after the war, finishing the monument with stone from another quarry. That bastard!

Hot story! I think it would not change my mind, but confirm it! My hubby and I drove around the Yucatán peninsula to a dozen Mayan cities (once you get past Chichen Itzá, in some of these cities we were literally 2 of 3 people on the grounds! Talk about some good mutual lust spaces ;)) It was an incredible culture. My favourite was Kalak Mul on the border of Guatemala, which is not cleared, the pyramids jutting out of the jungle in sight of other pyramid tips like something from Lord of the Rings, with howler monkeys and wild turkeys in the treetops. At Mayapan, you can still see the colored paint on the limestone!

She had a bit about how the Democrats were proving to have a double standard because they were making fun of Trump’s weight/health, despite the fact that they claimed Hillary’s health was verboten.

I kept thinking: way to miss the point. It’s not that people are making fun of the dumpster’s weight, but the obvious lie about his weight and health.

It was bad enough when lies and truth were given equal footing in politics and the news media. Now the lies are being told as if they are the operative truths, even when we can see with out own goddamned eyes THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS.

OT: I’m planning a little dinner for the grouse spouse’s birthday. I’m expecting around 15 people or so. Due to my health and mobility issues I need to keep it fairly simple and anything I can do ahead of time helps. I’ve already promised to bake him a red velvet cake, so that will be my most time consuming task. I’m thinking something easy for the main dish like beef stroganoff in the crock pot. I’m also thinking roasted honey balsamic carrots, crusty bread with a whipped butter (maybe garlic or rosemary). I don’t want the hassle of salad, but I need at least one or two more sides. Anyone have any fabulous and easy ideas for a vegetable? I’m thinking something green and low starch since we already have the bread and pasta from the stroganoff.

Just because it’s funny: My dad’s new girlfriend is a lovely person and doesn’t want to come empty handed to my house. She fancies herself a better cook than she is and offered to bring the cake. The funny part is that the husband had her red velvet at Christmas and didn’t like it. (He’s like Mikey and eats anything.) I told her no one else will be bringing anything but she insisted, so now we get to try her homemade cookies. Yay.

Baked artichokes with garlic, rosemary, & lemon.

Drizzle the artichokes with olive oil, place sliced garlic, a sprig of rosemary, and a slice of lemon on each. Salt & pepper to taste. Bake about 30 min until the artichokes are soft.

      ETA: Bake at 350-375.

      • Gretchen

That sounds lovely. Do they need to be served with anything on the side? My mother always served artichokes with drawn butter.

        • Talisman

I supposed you could melt butter and mix in some garlic and/or rosemary. I usually don’t do dipping sauces.

          • Gretchen

Thanks a tempting recipe. Even if it doesn’t make it to the table for the birthday dinner, we will have it soon.

          • Talisman

I think the hardest part is preparing the artichokes. You might be able to buy the pre-cut, though. It’s been a long, long time since I fixed the dish (I mean, like 20 years), and that was the main reason I quit cooking it. You have to slice off the stems & scoop out the heart. Maybe you could look it the prep online.

It’s strange that I remember the recipe. It was in a package of recipe cards that the grocery store gave away for free.

          • Gretchen

It’s a bit of a retro meal anyway with the stroganoff and red velvet. These are favorites from my 1970’s childhood. I saw a recipe for bacon wrapped asparagus that caught my eye. It looks easy and tasty.

          • Talisman

Heck, you can buy asparagus that can be steamed in the microwave now. I was thinking maybe seasoning it with a some fresh thyme.

      • Lazycrockett

Never having had one what exactly does a artichoke taste like?

        • Gretchen

In my experience it tastes like drawn butter. I’m probably not the best judge.

        • Talisman

Like I said, the last time I had one was 20 years ago.

        • Girlgoon

I’m from the right coast having moved to the left coast I found there is an obsessive following for them here. I’d sort of compare a freshly baked artichoke to a caramelized baked vadalia onion. Not literally the same taste wise but a similar taste experience.

          • Lazycrockett

really? I love onions and have made baked onions plenty of times. intriguing.

        • DoctorDJ

Boil whole for artichokes for ~40 minutes. Remove from cooking H2O and place on plate to enjoy, one per guest. Plan on artichoke consumption as an appetizer, as this process will take a good 15 minutes while the rest of the meal is prepared. (This is also a test of manliness, as these need to be consumed hot, and burned fingers may ensue.)

Pull off the leaves, one by one, dipping the the lower tips (connected to the plant) in equal parts melted butter/lemon sauce, and scraping the bottom end of the leave against your lower teeth. At first you’ll get very little “meat,” but as you continue into the artichoke, more and more of the edible heart will be extracted. Yum!

Eventually you’ll run out of leaves and reach the choke, the fine-feathered hairy innards (that will kill you if consumed, or so my father warned me). With your fingers, or a spoon, pull or scrape out the choke feathers. What results is pure Nirvana, the heart of the artichoke. The whole thing is edible, and is best consumed (imho) by slicing it off the stem and dropping it into the lemon/butter sauce. Cut it into 4 quarters. Swirl it around to coat completely in the sauce. Then pop each quarter into your mouth for a fabulously orgasmic taste experience.

        • Kinda like a very delicious veggie with a unique taste and texture — comparable to a mild asparagus but not as “green” perhaps, or as someone says a mild sweet onion, or roast mushroom maybe — you can also try canned ones which I use sometimes which are really good which I am sure purists are appalled at.

Just another day in Donald Trump’s America

Tennessee sheriff taped saying ‘I love this shit’ after ordering suspect’s killing

Oddie Shoupe is being sued for excessive force after telling deputies to shoot unarmed Michael Dial rather than risk damage to police cars

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/feb/06/tennessee-sheriff-caught-on-tape-killing-suspect-lawsuit

A Tennessee sheriff is being sued for using excessive force after he was recorded boasting he had told officers to shoot a man rather than risk damaging police cars by ramming him off the road.

“They said ‘we’re ramming him,’” Sheriff Oddie Shoupe of White County said on tape in the aftermath of the killing of suspect Michael Dial. “I said, ‘Don’t ram him, shoot him.’ Fuck that shit. Ain’t gonna tear up my cars.”

Shoupe arrived on the scene shortly after police had shot Dial at the conclusion of a low-speed chase, clearly upset he had missed the excitement.

“I love this shit,” Shoupe said, apparently unaware that his comments were being picked up by another deputy’s body-worn camera. “God, I tell you what, I thrive on it.

So happy to see the nations of Europe discover their confidence again after the devastation and ‘humiliation’ brought about by the World Wars, when all the nations of the world saw the “highest civilization” descend to such darkness twice in as many years. That sort of thing tends to hurt one’s confidence… for a time.

We have been in America’s shadow for too long now, and without the spoiling effect of a generally anti-European British establishment things can finally start to see some positive movement.
Trump’s hostility towards Europe will get worse and it will only have more longer lasting consequences, few of which are beneficial to America.

      • Halou

All of this is, of course, assuming there is no new Molotov-Ribbentrop pact in the works.

Funny that. Because Turtle Mitch vetoed a provision that would have maintained military wages during the last shutdown, had it lasted long enough, a provision put forward by a Democrat.

The Republican party has all the respect in the world for the guns and tanks and other tools of war, but no respect at all for the people who operate them nor for the reasons behind why people join the armed forces in the first place.

      • is SL even still a thing? i had a friend who was really into it for a while, but gave it up quite a few years ago.

        • Yes very much so. It has remained stable for about 9 years with about 35,000 – 50,000 players at any one time. They have opened a high end platform for advanced graphics computers at http://www.sansar.com. I am an avatar there. I still maintain a blog at http://www.eddihaskell.com but I have not done photography since late November.

“If you’ve ever wondered what Morons believe…”

I see at least nine that are on some serious opiods.

      • Oscarlating Wildely

Yea, “chastity” guy at 1:06: Dude just totally got it on with Elder Jones.

      • Halou

I haven’t forgiven the local Mormon bunch for making me late to a job interview some years ago. They could see I was in a hurry so jumped up right in front of me, I almost collided with them, and they wouldn’t let me go in peace until I took a ‘complimentary’ free copy of their stupid book.

They are an in-your-face arrogant bunch who care nothing for the problems of others, better even that people struggle harder through this life so they get a better next life, or somesuch nonsense.

        • Treant

Take the copy, open it to break the spine, and drop it at your feet while you stomp on the page to render it too scuffed to give to others. Then move onward.

One couple who’s friends with my cousin are Morons, and always introduce themselves as such. I think they were a bit put-off when “Mormon” came out of their mouth, I visibly stiffened, and rapidly excused myself. They did keep trying to talk to me, but I move faster than they do…

    • BobSF_94117

Seriously? Minivans over bat-shit crazy planet stuff?

  • fahvel

that should include some soldiers, red, white, and blue streaming jets ove the pennsylvania avenue – but first, bread, cheese and a touch of wine. Your tudy in the white house couldn’t even touch the parade we have and I think M. Machron should sue his ass.

The USA has no road mobile ICBMs.
Whatever they come up with for this parade, Kim Jong-eun’s will have the bigger rockets.

    • because it’s sooooooooo important that after the nuclear holocaust has begun, the U!S!A! still has the penis strike power to pound Minsk into the ground! after DC, NYC, London, Moscow and Beijing are all gone, of course. let’s not forget Lansing, Michigan and Calcutta, India, cause darnit those brown people deserve a taste of our power ramming down their… oh, um, nevermind.

  • Makoto

Aw, a cute little parade, isn’t that nice!

Maybe someone will suggest they practice the Bellamy Salute while they pass his review stand. They could time it for the “under god” portion of the pledge, since it used to go with the whole thing. Trump can read off “God with us!” from the teleprompter before raging about America First and how immigrants are to blame for the economy.

  • Tom Furgas

Pretty impressive testosterone-fueled chest beating coming from a spoiled wet fart who was too chickenshit to serve in the military due to “bone spurs” which today apparently have no effect on his ability to play golf 100 times a year.

  • Rebecca Gardner
    • JCF

“Actually it was migrant from a “shithole” country ingenuity.”

Come on, Becca, you KNOW Drumpf makes a “Shithole Exception” based upon pale skin color…

    • “Room temp IQ” — I may steal that.

  • jeffg166

This will be like his inauguration parade where little to no people lined the parade route. Or it could be an opportunity to have a massive protest all along the parade route.

    • Boreal

      I think possibly massive protest.

      • LesbianTippingHabits

I suggest a Lunar protest, if you know what I mean.

Of course, his is bigger, we will stipulate to that.

      • jeffg166

A million people chanting “Down with Trump” for the duration of the parade.

  • Boreal
  • Nate

    This is just scary.

  • Barry William Teske

Very interesting indeed what this gentleman has to say near the end of the interview re #45:

First off, he’ll have to teach everyone to goose-step. That’s the initial requirement of a tin-horn dictator, which is what tRump is turning out to be.
Then he’ll have to persuade the Congress to repave all the streets in Washington where the tank tracks tear up the pavement. I wonder how many missiles on launchers he’ll want to drag around, as well.

  • ok, so, i don’t like anime or manga. most of the time. i don’t judge those who do. i’m also not catholic, but again, not judging. and i certainly am not a hollywood producer, those, well… heh.

i just can’t believe the very high quality this particular little jr version of one of the great classics. i guess you’d have to have read the original and done a little study of what it is all about, but the folks who put this version together “get it.” how to translate classics in a modern age. check it out, parents. it’s way gory and violent, but if you want to use comix to open a discussion about vice and “sin” and the risks that go with it? this could be a good start. or just a fun ride thru the mythology of others. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1401113/?ref_=nv_sr_1

  • joe ho

There will be a special squadron of Bernie or Busters and Green Partiers marching along as an honor guard. Kremlin Jill will be riding on a tank. Trump’s way of thanking them for his victory.

  • GeneInSJ

This is getting very full-on Nazi…

  • netxtown

a million jillion tanks and a million jillion soldiers ain’t gonna due jack shit for donnie’s tiny penis.

  • geoffalnutt

That picture! I just keep thinking of “The Ministry Of Silly Walks” by Monty Python.

  • rextrek1

GAWD I PHKN HATE this MOFO with a RED HOT PASSION! The Blatant Hypocracy SICKENS me…Imagine what the RIGHTWING woulda said IF President Obama did this??? One PHKN guess!!!!!! BUEHLER?? Where’s Our Lee Harvey Oswald?

  • BostonBud

Come for the parade but STAY for the goosestepping!

  • kanehau

We can well afford a spectacular parade – now that we’ve gutted the CDCs budget.

Who needs critical health monitoring when we can all be goose-stepping.

  • sonoitabear

It’s official now: tRUMP has BECOME Kim Jong Il…

  • kareemachan

Gee, this wouldn’t encourage a terrorist to try something – all sorts of military and political bigwigs and a buncha soldiers all in one spot….

10 to 1 drumpster shows up in some gussied-up military uniform a la david clarke…

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

Get your kids to form a circle around you, they can march and clap.

Don’t subject the country to your weak & worthless insecurities.

  • JIM W

As if the DoD doesn’t have enough to do.
I’m wondering if Trump is having a military style outfit for the occasion.

  • Richard

Loyalty oaths, military parades in the streets, opposition
called rats and treasonous, one bullshit lie after the other, welcome to a
fascist dictatorship. The next thing we’ll see will be loud speakers on
every street corner extolling the virtues of the corrupt regime and the Dear
Leader. 62,979,879 (NOT a majority) American voters were conned in November
2016, and now thanks to them our Democracy is being
destroyed. If the Russians interfere in the 2018 elections,
which they will, after being so successful the last time, we will end up
mirroring a Putin dictatorship and we can kiss Democracy and Freedom good bye.

  • Kendall

OMG so unhinged! How is he different from Kim Jong-Un, again? I’m missing some distinction between him and other petty, wacko dictators.

  • Alencon

This may well be the stupidest idea old cadet bone spurs has come up with yet.
