Indonesia Moves To Criminalize All Non-Marital Sex

The Associated Press reports:

Riding a tsunami of moral conservatism and anti-gay prejudice, Indonesia’s Islamic political parties appear on the cusp of a major victory: outlawing all sex outside marriage.

Revisions to Indonesia’s criminal code being considered by Parliament would allow prison sentences of up to five years for sex between unmarried people. Those changes would also criminalize gay sex, the bugbear of Indonesia’s Islamic and secular political parties.

Conservative groups such as the Family Love Alliance believe Indonesia is being overwhelmed by immoral behavior such as sex between unmarried young couples, and in December nearly succeeding in convincing Indonesia’s Constitutional Court to outlaw gay sex and sex outside marriage.

The Islamic parties’ message is perhaps at its most politically potent when aimed at Indonesia’s besieged LGBT minority, which for the past two years has been the target of an escalating campaign of raids, arrests, hateful rhetoric from government officials and vigilante attacks.

Earlier this week Google bowed to Indonesia’s demand to remove a gay dating app from the local version of its online store. Also this week the ultra-conservative province of Aceh ordered all flight attendants to wear headscarves when they fly into the region or face prosecution by religious police.

RELATED: Last year Jakarta police arrested 141 men in a raid on a gay sauna as part of an ongoing attack against LGBT citizens. In December, however, Indonesia’s high court narrowly rejected a petition to criminalize homosexuality outright. Indonesia’s Aceh province instituted sharia law in 2015 and two gay men there were publicly caned last year as a jeering crowd recorded the abuse with their phones. Indonesia is the world’s fourth-most populous nation.

Not to worry, that would never happen here. Even though the religious right would love it, we all know the GOP mostly engages in non-marital sex.

  • JohnJay

Isn’t there some Islamic loophole I remember seeing on some TV report about this:
A man goes to a brothel, there is someone there who “marries” him to the women he chooses. After an hour, he can divorce her before he leaves. Thus, no sex out of marriage. Allah be fooled.

Most religions have some type of loophole for restrictive rules. The Jewish Eruv and other ways to circumvent sabbath rules, Catholic Indulgences (which still exist, but are in the form of prayers and no longer money donations) for time off from purgatory, and the ever popular Christian “I’m already saved, and I’m forgiven no matter what I do”.

    • Chris Baker

Yup, temporary marriages are a thing.

So basically only LGBT and uppity women will be punished. I know how this shit rolls. If you’re a straight dude, the cops will wink at you getting a slice of strange behind your wife’s back but they’ll totally go after everyone else.

Women there should be warned that it’s not going to stop there. They’ll probably try to take away a lot of other crap soon. Whatever praise women get from men for going along with this and being “good girls” is not worth it. It’s something I wish a lot of women here would understand.

Thank you for bringing the month’s ‘focus’ to us. I was wondering . . .

      • Proud MOFO Beaner (bkb)

        Awesome thx for sharing

        • TuuxKabin

It is, isn’t it. A friend called me from Toronto, sitting in the theatre, waiting for Alabama Shakes to come on the stage, to tell me, “listen! I’m going to hold the phone up . . . ” I couldn’t tell what it was, when she told me it just made Alabama Shakes that much more awe inspiring.

I like your work by the way and saved some what I’ve seen onto another file. I do collage workshops and would like to introduce one of your pieces to give the attendees something to contemplate. The one I’m thinking of is the vampire bite on the Statue of Liberty’s neck. To me, THAT is fuckin’ to the point, with graphics to carry the message home. Your other one, of the trucks on the interstate, exiting to – I don’t remember what – I also put aside. Was done with photoshop? El HubCap is beginning a photoshop workshop Saturday and will give me a hand to do collages on the computer. I’ll never leave it.

Thanks for initiating the idea. I hope there’s a daily comment regarding the significance of the month.

Perhaps a lil’ bit of Alabama Shakes?

          • Proud MOFO Beaner (bkb)

Thanks you so much for saying that. I’m always a bit shy about sharing. I not very proficient with the technology but I think my ideas are usally pretty good. Everything I do I do on my iPad using Adobe photoshop apps and some other free editing apps. I cannot remember the trucks on the interstate image….

All my images are here.[email protected]/

You’re certainly welcome to use the statute of liberty image or any other that you like (although I prefer they not be shared online). Do you need a clean version of that image?

By the way I use that one for protest sign.

          • TuuxKabin

            THAT! Is perfect. Your sign!

I’m still at kindergarten level in creating collage work. Find magazines, catalogs, museum bulletins, play bills, etc. Flip thru the pages, straight tear it out of the magazine then trim down to size with zig zag or wavy scissors. Like ‘pinking shears.’ Then on a styrofoam board – using disassembled cracker, cookie, soap, toothpaste or any boxed packaging, the inside is perfect as a canvas – pin up a mock up of the piece. Once to my liking, mod podge it on. Once dry cover with a book binding glue, glossy. Take to the print shop, they reproduce it onto glossy , thick, like poster board and I cut using the zig zag scissors. My ‘line’ is “Raggedy Ass Edge Collaboration With 2guys named joe,” el HubCap and commentater tot here at Joe’s. Saturday he’ll come home and go over what he learns at the PhotoShop workshop. I’m psyched.

I recognize the integrity of your work, and will only use to get the attendees focused on the “there’s more flavors than vanilla” sensibility of designs, styles, embellishing. We are an elder group and (they are) a bit traditional with images, tho a couple of them have rocked my shoes with their pieces.

Cool. I just went to bryan is being examined . . . that’s great! What some of your pieces remind me of are Fillmore Auditorium, Avalon Ballroom and other rock venues in San Francisco in the mid to late 60’s. A cousin kept just about every single poster they handed to everyone leaving the concert, with postcard size as well. She has her ‘hippy room’ in her Walnut Creek, Ca home. Wish I’d done the same.

Thank you for being so gracious in spreading your art. I’m marking your site. It’s a turn on!

          • Proud MOFO Beaner (bkb)

I would love to have that collection of posters! Thank you for your kind words — they are really very humbly appreciated. And please let me know if you want to use anything — I would be happy to send the file. Flickr has a email and if you sign up it’s free and can send me an email through there. I don’t think discus has that private feature

I would love to see your work as well. Is it online anywhwere? If not, you can consider Flickr. Like I said it’s free and it’s a pretty non-aggressive and friendly community in my experience. Of course your work has to be digitized but it’s a great way to share and meet people.

Finally if you have a tablet and want to try digital work, these are the primary apps I use and they’re pretty damn good for what they are. I was always a compulsive photo taker and had all these digital images sitting on various devices and computers. So I started using them as the basis for my “creations” that are photostream. using these apps and others

My name is Bryan — but I change the Flickr profile name occasionally. It’s always “Bryan ….” something.

As to the beaner. I started using that last year when I saw this video and crystallized for me how hated brown people really are by a good proportion of the population so I thought I’d own it so to speak. It’s still hard for me to watch

          • TuuxKabin

Hi Bryan. David here. The Halloween pictures are great as well.

I’ll come back to the NYT’s article/video. It’s been too nice an evening to get brought down. My childhood was like that. HS counsellors putting me in shop, business classes, art – which was cool – I had to argue to be in one college prep class. It was hateful. When I became aware of Cesar Chavez, the UFW, and la Raza I had a blooming, of sorts. A drunk woman trying to think of an insult shouted, “you, you, you tortilla slapping bitch.” A friend and I nearly fell over laughing.

I read a comment in the thread about your trip to the Shining ‘museum.’ That picture was good and scary. I’ve always enjoyed a good shock in the dark movie house. Suppose to be good for the heart.

“You’re My Favorite Waste of Time,” by Crenshaw Marshall comes to mind. I’m going to be with bryan in that sterile lab for a long time, and/or going thru the Yahoo thing. Thanks. I’ve needed a new diversion.

          • Proud MOFO Beaner (bkb)

I think people have wondered about the use of the term and it probably makes people uncomfortable. So when u asked I thought I’d take the opportunity to explain.

It made me a proud beaner as well, to borrow a phrase. Thanks. I knew I came from a richer culture, society, higher evolved than the white trash in the East Bay, Ca. It was short lived.
But yes, to see it now. Shocking the plunge into despair it causes me. I often say to myself walking around the neighborhood here, seeing brown, darker, and black neighbors going about, “I love my peeps.”

Do they teach how to evaluate evidence presented by other people? Do they teach how to look at what you’re told in context, to help decide if it’s reasonable?

Do they teach you that if you just go with your gut, you’re in trouble, because your gut is full of sh it?

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

Unfortunately, a large swath of humanity is literally devolving before our very eyes. It’s as if some cannot fathom taking the next step in the human endeavor and it scares them.

      That next step?

The realization that a huge paradigm shift is happening, that being the shedding of superstitious belief and dogma. Atheism or at the very least agnosticism, is rising, to the point where it now poses a direct threat to faith and those who control it. I believe we’re about to, finally I think, step out of our infancy into a new age…but first, we have to survive the birthing process, which as any woman will tell you is painful, sometimes very bloody and involves sudden, painful contractions.

We are, in my opinion, at a very real crossroads in the human experiment; how else to explain the palpable desperation of religions as they become more shrill and strident in their invective and accusations towards their traditional scapegoats: women, gays, apostates. These are the contraction, nay, convulsions of change; threatened by knowledge, science, even the internet. We can see the lies for what they are. We can see through the illusions of piety, to the very core of their hypocrisy. We, humanity, are changing…and the old guard, those in charge, cannot abide; so they make laws, they incite, they find the scapegoats who have worked so well in the past and display them as the reason, once again, for all maledictions and failures in society.

This is why this crap is happening in 2018.

Note: apologies for the long response, this has been on mind my of late.

The best way to counter religious extremism is to educate kids. When they understand how science works, especially, they can apply the same methodology to understanding social issues. A fact-based world where people have been taught how to evaluate evidence and come to reasonable conclusions has no place for religious extremism, which is why religious conservatives don’t want their kids to be taught how to think clearly.

    • Stuart Wyman-Cahall

True, that. I’m sorry that Americans are falling for this “school voucher ” crap and using my tax dollars to pay for it. Now that’s a shithole country.

    Religion makes people weak.

For God’s sake, these people are afraid of their own genitals.

    • Todd20036

Not quite. Religion makes weak people think they are storng

      • PlutoAnimus

So the most religious people are also the most weak?

        That doesn’t jibe.

        • Bride of Trump

The weak require an omnipotent Sky Daddy to stave off an existential crisis.

          • PlutoAnimus

But, if we make the reasonable assumption that 95% of Indonesians are devout, I don’t think it’s reasonable to assume that all of those people would have also turned out to be as psychologically and emotionally weak, had they been raised atheist.

More likely, many of them would have been much stronger without religion.

          • Bride of Trump

I see your point. Religion does seem to have a way of weakening people’s ability to apply logic and reason to many situations.

Nearly 87% of respondents to a poll said they felt “threatened” by LGBT peoples. That’s how this happens.. religious extremists convince others who wouldn’t otherwise be extreme that they are personally being attacked or discriminated against or threatened in some way and so they agree to go along with the religious extremists to protect themselves. That’s what happened here in America over and over again. I can’t tell you how many people I heard during the prop 8 nightmare say they were only protecting their personal religious rights (which they were told were under attack) or protecting children (which they were told would be forcibly indoctrinated) and that they had nothing against our community otherwise. This is thousands of years of history just repeating itself. This isn’t new and it isn’t hard to figure out what’s going on. Christopher Hitchens was right.

    • Bride of Trump

      I miss Hitch.

  • TheManicMechanic

    Sounds like a shithole.

    • Bride of Trump

Worked there 20 years ago. Back then there were a lot of Muslims, but because there was limited internet coverage, Sharia and the crazy conservative / radicalized version of Islam had limited traction. Apparently that’s changed.

What these fools don’t understand is that going off the religious deep end will be incredibly bad for business.

  • boobert

What if you and your sex partner ARE married, just not to each other? lol

  • Raising_Rlyeh

But Indonesia is supposed to be a moderate Muslim nation. /s

    • Bride of Trump

      Used to be.

      • Craig Howell

        Like Turkey.

        • Bride of Trump

Never been there, but if it went from laissez faire Islam to the wackjob variety, it’s very similar.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Another reason to distrust Islam and it’s adherents, just like I do Christianity, Judaism and any religion or its followers.

  • JWC

Dumb fucking move Might as well restrict breathing

  • Ninja0980

    Fuck religion.

  • The Milkman

Good example of how straight people should be concerned about religious extremists coming for LGBT people. Who do you think will be next? That’s right, straight people. YOU.

  • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

Crazy…Saudi Arabia and maybe Iran are loosening the draconian rules governing women and their rights. Meanwhile, Indonesia is tripling down on being assholes.
    It’s not a tourist destination I’d visit!

  • TuuxKabin

Well they’ve got no sense of fun.

  • andrew

American Christian fundamentalists would do the same thing in a heartbeat, if given the opportunity. Religious fundamentalism of every stripe is now and always has been the enemy of human freedom.

How self defeating, Indonesia is planning to build the world’s largest prisons to incarcerate a generation of young people and half its adult population that strays out of their marriages.

  • teedofftaxpayer

I guess it will soon be coming to America.

  • GanymedeRenard

Is there anything, as it were, “intrinsically disordered” to monotheism that makes sex a dirty thing always in need of control by higher authorities? I just cannot understand this sick obsession.

    • Gianni

Modern religions have always had a big problem with sex. It’s a dirty, naughty, bad, sinful thing that needs controlling and God, through his loving believers and their religions, is the one to do it. Everything sexual, except poking the wife, is taboo. I remember, when in confession, the priest would always ask the boys if they touched themselves or anyone else or were touched by others. What boy has never grabbed his hard dick and done his best to get relief? I think the priest knew that. 🙂 And then would come the 10,000 Hail Marys as penance and he’d admonish us to not do that again because it was so sinful. Yeah, right, talk to you next week, Father.

      • GanymedeRenard

I concur with you in all but the “modern religions” part. I just wonder what’s the starting point for a religion to be considered modern?

        • Gianni

To me, it is when the Christian religion took hold of the Roman empire. Other more ancient religions (barring the Jewish religion) had precious little problems over sex and some even included it in their rituals. Of course, then along came Islam with similar restrictions and punishments.

          • GanymedeRenard

You and I are in full communion now, so to speak. 😀

      • Ann Kah

It’s a dirty, nasty, sinful thing when somebody ELSE does it…

  • Gianni

So now all unmarried Indonesians will be virgins, right? That’ll work. I’d bet that the nutjob politicians who pass this will be the first to break their new law. Our world is getting so fucked-up in the head on a daily basis.

  • JCF

“If a (Muslim) crew member fails to comply [w/ the hijab requirement] , we
will reprimand her. If she does it repeatedly, I will order Sharia
    police to nab her.”

  • Ann Kah

I suspect that the only ones punished by this law will be gay men and straight women.

  • Blueflash

But this can’t be! Indonesia is a moderate Muslim country! Islamophobia!
Meanwhile, nothing remotely like this is occurring in the rest of (non-Islamic) East Asia.
