BRITAIN: Neo-Nazi Man Charged In Terror Plot Against Gay Bar Claims Innocence, Tells Court He Is Bisexual

Britain’s Metro reports:

A terror suspect who plotted to launch an attack at a gay pride event has come out as bisexual during his trial. Ethan Stables, 20, denies plotting to commit acts of terrorism at the event at the New Empire pub in Barrow, Cumbria, last June.

He made the revelation after a jury saw a video of him saying ‘gays look nicer on fire’ as he burned a rainbow flag. However he said that he had previously been too scared to reveal his sexuality because his parents ‘would be disgusted’ saying he was ‘utterly ashamed’ of what he had done.

He said that he had had sexual experiences with men, but only revealed it after his trial had started. He told the jury: ‘I am disgusted and ashamed at myself for what I said. I just wish I could turn the clock back. I’m sorry.’

Stables’ godfather Phillip Loveless, who is gay, took to the stand at Leeds Crown Court to say that he had no reason to believe that his godson was homophobic.

  • bkmn

Being gay or bi does not prevent you from being a sociopath.

          are you sure? hahahaha

    • Chris Gardner

Like say… being Republican and voting for Republicans? 🙂

  • 🐾vorpal🐾

Sorry, Stables, you “genius,” but the rainbow flag and the Nazi flag are not compatible.

    • Todd20036

No, but the Nazi uniform, minus the Swatzstikas, can be hot.

        Thank you Hugo Boss.

Ugh, I feel ya. My high blood pressure is outta control and my doctor is like, “just lose some weight.”

      • MatthewMidbury

        Feel me!

  • Joseph Miceli

Sigh. This is a tough one. My heart goes out to anyone in an abusive environment where they are in denial and stockholmed….but planning to kill gays….this is an all around tragedy. That this young man grew up not feeling able to be openly gay is a tragedy, but there are consequences for actions.

    • CanuckDon

However, he does have a godfather who is gay himself which means his parents chose Phillip Loveless to be their son’s godfather. Maybe his parents didn’t know about Phillip’s sexuality until after the fact but their choice of a godfather is still in their lives. This seems to be more of a case of a youngster angry at the world and lashing out recklessly.

      • Joseph Miceli

I see what you mean. Still, peer pressure and running with a bad gang are powerful forces. Not making excuses, mind you. This man failed not just a test of his character, but he failed at a test of his basic humanity. No one “looks better on fire” whether they be black, white, straight gay or Vulcan.

        • netxtown

Why does this remind me of that Patty Hurst mess from the 60’s?

    • Joe in PA

Nope, not for me. The ONLY time that kind of defense puts me on the fence is if he suffered years of abuse (think battered spouse, bullied youth). And then only maybe.

      • Joseph Miceli

Nothing “put me on the fence.” I said my heart goes out to him because he felt ashamed of his sexuality and no one should suffer that. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have to pay for what he’s done. I hate it that some POS can just say “I’m sorry” and that’s supposed to make it all better. This guy still has to pay for his actions.

        • Joe in PA

got it, I spoke in haste. I thought you defending him.

          • Joseph Miceli

No, I just think it is a shame anyone has to grow up so ashamed of their sexuality… still. Even now. It’s just sad.

          • CanuckDon

There’s a lot of negative influences out there unfortunately. I’ve been saying it for awhile but the white supremacy/ uber-male movement has its appeal to young males struggling with their sexuality.

        • Just_reading_and_writing

I feel sorry for him. He’s brainwashed. We aren’t born to hate

          • Joseph Miceli

Well, he’s going to get a LOT of time to reflect. He’s young enough. Maybe this time will allow him to develop the character that he’s so obviously missing.

          • unsavedheathen

Sadly, I bet he loses his gag reflex and control of his sphincter before any character develops.

          • MatthewMidbury

I am born to love you.

        • FancyThat

There’s a really good parallel here between the kid charged with terrorism and the Tomi Lahren tweets. Both are guilty of misguided, malicious, hateful homophobic acts. The kid just went ahead with intentional acts to maim and kill. Tomi’s victims emerge as LGBTQ+ teen suicides, or victims of homophobic violence.

          • Joseph Miceli

Overt verse covert violence . Hmmmm.

    • Misutaa Roboto

Insecurity leads to some of the most vicious behaviors, particularly among men. I could believe either that he’s lying now or was acting out because of his own internal conflicts, but it doesn’t matter in any material way, of course. It’s a sadder case if it’s the latter, but no more forgivable.

  • Joe in PA

    Brilliant defense there putz.

  • Just_reading_and_writing

“I’m sorry.” Lol. That makes it all better

That really is hilarious. I remember playing a game something like that with my sister (I was about 6 or 7)…it was a card game I think and you picked your “date”, I always wanted the guy named “Poindexter”, he had glasses and was supposed to be the nerd that nobody wanted. Geez, that was like 100 years ago…thanks for that walk down memory lane.

And yes, my sister knew I was gay before I did. :0

          • FancyThat

I remember drawing a circle around that game in the Sears Christmas catalog as one of the my desired gift selections. Never got it, since it was a game “for girls.” So what’s wrong with having a nice looking guy for a date? I may have accidentally been gay really early on. Still am. Whodathunk?

  • It was an act of terrorism before he made the admission of bisexuality since he was apparently presenting himself as straight and anti-gay. Seems like he should still be charged with terrorism.

    • Exactly, the root cause motivation doesn’t change the intended act and intended effect.

    • Harley

Proving yet again that homophobia is indeed rooted in self hating closeted gay men who have had the Bible beaten over their head time and again by the family and peers. He’s still a scociopath.

    • Nic Peterson

True enough. I would love to see him throw his religious upbringing on the table as part of a defense. Christians need some examples of how the Wahhabis don’t have the corner on the market when it comes to churning out violent young people.

While I applaud Pelosi for the letter to Ryan, what I heard the other night on MSNBC is that Nunes is not doing anything that Ryan has not approved/agreed with!

Nunes isn’t doing anything Charles and David Koch do not approve. Ryan is doing what his paymasters require.

        Who says slavery is dead?

    • Gregory B

The DEMS need to release their version of the Memo NOW.

      • ChrisMorley

Dems don’t have any version to release.

There are two Nunes’ versions, one shown to the Dems (but not handed to them) which the House Committee voted on, and Dunes’ later sneakily amended version that he snitched to the tRumpenFührer.

        • Priya Lynn

The Dems have a rebuttal memo that addresses the false claims in the Nunes memo. Republicans refuse to let them release it. They must do it anyway if Nunes releases his.

  • Chuck in NYC

His parents would be disgusted and utterly ashamed if he was gay, but had no problem with him being a Nazi? Nice values there.

    • Jay

Apparently his mother has said that she kicked him out because he threatened to cut her head off and burn the house down. Yet he says that the reason he didn’t decide to come out until part way through the trial is because he didn’t want to disappoint his grandparents. It doesn’t make any sense. He’s clearly just saying whatever he thinks will get him off the hook.

      • Misutaa Roboto

Unfortunately, I think this sort of lie would fit all too well with the mindset of the modern Nazi. These are the same sort of people who posit fanciful scenarios about men pretending to be transgender so they can follow women into the restroom. When cornered, I don’t see them having any issue with pretending to be gay or bi if they think it will help them get off the hook.

Even if he’s not full of shit on this claim and was acting out of projected self-hate before (also sadly plausible), it doesn’t make him any more worthy of clemency. Once your internal conflicts start doing harm to others you are no longer the victim.

  • Jefe5084

Yeah. I kinda thought he looked tre gay.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Seriously? There’s video and internet posts of what he thought and wanted to do. Using bisexuality as an excuse, bitch please. Lock him up, throw away the key. Problem solved.

  • Jay

From what I’ve read about the case, he sounds pretty dishonest and manipulative. For example, he claims that when he said he was going to attack people with a machete, he wasn’t serious and had even forgotten that his collection of weapons and bomb-making equipment included a machete.

So I’m not convinced that he’s telling the truth about his orientation.

    • kareemachan

  • RepublicansRNotConservative

I never quite know how to react to stories like this. If he’s truly bisexual and sorry for acting like a nazi POS, I’m glad to see him deal with his problems, and I’d be okay with a light sentence…maybe some kind of community service to the LGBT community, counseling, etc. OTOH, if he’s just saying these things to get a light sentence, to hell with that, lock him up. Its nearly impossible to know the truth, even in person, and one will never know the truth simply by reading an article.

Except, you know, all the homophobic shit he said. That shit was totally homophobic. But him? Nah…

  • m_lp_ql_m

Everyone is homophobic. Everyone. After 6 millennia of religious indoctrination of our culture, it’s inescapable. Especially LGBTQI people, they’re some of the most homophobic people I know. Myself included.

  • Chadwick

So- his family is so homophobic they named a gay man as his godfather?

  • ChrisMorley

The Metro’s report continues with more of the evidence of Stables’ godfather Phillip Loveless, who is gay:

[Loveless] said: ‘I have a sixth sense for that sort of thing [whether someone is homophobic].’
He said that [Ethan] was a loner as a child adding ‘It became clear very early on that he wasn’t developing entirely normally. [The forensic psychiatrist for the defence reported that Ethan was diagnosed at age 5 as on the autistic spectrum – see Evening Mail report I’ve linked in the additional comment below this one].
‘He preferred to be on his own. There was never any problem with his intellectual capacity but when he was asked not to do something he would be very adamant that he wasn’t going to stop doing that thing.’

Mr Loveless said Stables, 20, was interested in fantasy and escapism, adding: ‘I felt he did go off on paranoid fantasies. He would get very fixated on certain ideas.
‘On one level it seemed totally bizarre (when he was arrested) but on another level we had all been waiting for something to happen.
‘I never thought it would be this but there was a sense something would give at some point.’
In cross examination by prosecution barrister Jonathan Sandiford Mr Loveless was asked if he knew Stables’ grandfather.
Mr Loveless replied: ‘I know his grandfather I got on fine with him. He is aware I’m gay and I don’t believe he is homophobic.’

    The trial continues.’

    • ChrisMorley

This trial is getting very little coverage in Britain, even in the local Leeds press (where the trial is being held), the Yorkshire Evening Post.

There’s a skimpy report in PinkNews

Over 100 miles from Leeds, in Barrow-in-Furness, where the accused lived and where he threatened the gay bar, the Northwest Evening Mail has much more.
This report is of evidence from a Consultant forensic psychiatrist Dr Matthew Appleyard for the defence.
Ethan’s been diagnosed with depression and ‘”When under stress you can see an increase in the features of someone with an autistic spectrum disorder,” the psychiatrist said.’
He’s attempted suicide and is being kept under observation in prison.

At the end of that report are links to the Evening Mail‘s earlier reports on the case.

      1 February 2018 5:59PM
‘BOTH prosecution and defence teams have concluded presenting their cases to the jury in the trial of Ethan Stables.
In a shock twist towards the end of the evidence, the judge, Peter Collier, told the jury he was allowing Stables to change his plea from guilty to not guilty in the offence of possessing explosives under suspicious circumstances.
In his testimony, the 20-year-old has described how he had to match head composition, which can be used to make an Improvised Explosive Device, for use in making a campfire. [I’ve no idea what that means]

On Friday the judge will first give a series of directions to the jury.
These allow him to sum up the evidence and point out the issues the jury must determine in order to reach a verdict.
These will likely include the detail of what must be proved in order to provide a conviction of preparing acts of terrorism and making threats to kill.
Then the prosecution and defence barristers, Jonathan Sandiford and Patrick Upward, will make their closing statements.
The prosecution will attempt to explain to the jury how the defendant is guilty while the defence will argue the case has not been proven.
The jury will likely be sent out to consider their verdict towards the end of [Friday] morning.
The jury will be told when they first retire that they must reach a unanimous verdict.’
