House GOP Votes To Release Secret Russia Memo

The New York Times reports:

Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee, apparently disregarding Justice Department warnings that their actions would be “extraordinarily reckless,” voted Monday evening to release a contentious secret memorandum said to accuse the department and the F.B.I. of misusing their authority to obtain a secret surveillance order on a former Trump campaign associate.

The vote threw fuel an already fiery partisan conflict over the investigations into Russia’s brazen meddling in the 2016 presidential election. Republicans invoked a power never before used by the secretive committee to effectively declassify the memo that they had compiled. Democrats called the three-and-a half-page document a dangerous effort to build a narrative to undercut the department’s ongoing Russia investigation, using cherry-picked facts assembled with little or no context.

What comes next was less clear. Under the obscure House rule invoked by the committee, President Trump now has five days to review the document and decide whether to try to block it from going public. The White House has repeatedly indicated that it wants the memo out, but Mr. Trump’s Justice Department had been working to slow or block its release.

Geraldo Rivera is one of the tragic figures of 20th and 21st Century TV journalism. He went from being a young and gifted man to being a reality TV buffoon who appears regularly on Fox News. He abandoned his dignity for the dollar bill. Much as Donald Trump did.

Covered in previous thread. Retiring early because he wants out/ combined with pressure from Christopher Wray

      • Cuberly Deux

If I’m not mistaken the original post was that he would be retiring in March. It looks like they moved it up to today.

        • Menergy

I had understood/read the previous information as his stepping aside as deputy director (I guess moving into a lower position or perhaps just going leave with his vacation time/pay until he officially submits papers and retires from the FBI/federal civil service) and starts to collect pension annuity.

    • Chucktech

Only resigning as Deputy Chief. He”ll be there in another capacity until March to get his pension.

I think it’s time for mr. Mueller to kick his whole team and investigation into giddyup mode with guns of blazing and put an end to this unbelievable fucking farce.

      • MaryJOGrady

I’d like to see Mr. Mueller drop the hammer after we all work hard and pull off a Blue Tsunami in November.
Pence, Manafort’s pick for VP and transition chief, is as dirty as #45. When the pair of them go down, we need a Democratic House Speaker.

        • DesertSun59

That Blue Tsunami is as good as dead already. Gerrymandering, gen’l voter suppression (which will be amped up to 100) and Russian hacking to an extent never before seen will assure GOP of wins. The midterms will be destruction of the Dems this year.

I too am so fucking sick and tired of this bullshit assclown #45. and every fucking GOPrick in guvmint, whether federal or state. I want obama back in the white house!

    • DreadPikathulhu

I’ve had it. I’m tired of living on constant anxiety. Even at the heights of Bush II post-9/11 excess and the 2004 election it wasn’t this bad. Weeks could go by without some new crisis opening up and there was some sense that the good guys would eventually prevail. They’re in complete control of the federal government and the majority of state governments and are intent on taking the courts, too. I’m glad that my life is more than 50% over, because I don’t want to live through what comes next if we’re unable to take back the House this year.

      • lyram

I hear you. Your despair(?) mirrors mine. I’ll believe the blue tsunami when I see it. I feel so helpless now. And I honestly feel nothing will come of the investigations. Because they need Republicans in congress and the voters to do something. I have no faith in the integrity of either.

    • Bob Conti

And those are the best things we can say about Hair Furor!

    • Galvestonian

He’s a traitor & etc., etc, etc – all of your points but what the hell do you call the rest of the Republicans backing him & trying to oust Mueller & any Russian investigation ? They are TRAITORS as well !

  • sigh.
    ok…help me out.
what is really all this about this memo?
    what is going on?

    • Leo

It’s very complicated. One part of this is to muddy the waters and give Trump “ammunition” to fire Rosenstein. It’s intelligence without context to make the argument that the FBI “went rogue” and went outside the law in its surveillance of the campaign. The biggest revelation regarding Rosenstein and Carter Page was already released to the press – it was according to several experts today, valid.

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

To add to Leo’s explain, the GOP / Trumpanzees are pretending to do this under Transparency, yet voted to do the exact opposite on the lefts memo, which would put things in context

    • Max_1

In short, the memo says, “DO NOT LOOK AT THE OTHER HAND.”

    • William

The CIA/NSA were listening in on Russian phone calls, as they do. During calls, they heard Russian officials talking to Americans. Our intelligence agencies identified what Americans were talking to Russians.

      • UrsusArctos 🐻

        More importantly WHICH Russians.

  • pch1013

This would be an excellent time for anyone with serious dirt on Nunes to come forward.

They know something wicked this way comes.

  • Leo

So, ultimately, intelligence is released without context, more Russian double agents likely get killed and InfoWars/Breitbart get material for about a year.

Schiff counters heavily on Maddow to the best of his ability without releasing additional classified intel and we wait for the additional fallout.

    That’s it. For now. Hopefully.

Do you remember MONTHS and MONTHS ago that Kurt Eichenwald said that if OUR government–because of rank corruption–refused to get to the bottom of Trump/Russia, allied intelligence would release evidence that would sink him?

I hope this is so, that we can count on our allies. Because OUR government is becoming a banana republic, and the American people don’t have the GUTS to stop it.

EDIT: Actually, after what I’ve seen since Trump entered the White House, after all the weak-as-water reactions to his MANY and ENDLESS outrages, I will confess I think it’s over, and the U.S. will be as corrupt as Putin’s Russia by 2020.

You’re letting them put the rule of law–the RULE OF LAW–to the vote, which should NEVER happen in a true democracy; and this outrage against democracy will happen in a de facto banana republic, with weaponized law enforcement, courts stacked with right-wing fanatics, and a COMPROMISED electoral process.

This has happened because, for a QUARTER CENTURY, you have, as a people, refused to stand up to baldfaced liars and dangerous, irrational extremists, in the GOP and their media LIE machine. Neither the people, nor the serious media, nor the Democratic party has stood up forcefully to them.

The massive and relentless protests, coupled with economic measures, which are necessary to STOP these fascists in their tracks are not going to happen. You cannot rely on the corporate press (the right’s LIE machine is not the only media problem), and you have no REAL leadership coming from the trembling weaklings in the Democratic party.

History is written by the victors. We cannot be spectators and assume that good will prevail. We must fight. Sadly we won’t until it’s too late

    • Oh, Parker

As amusing as the Fire and Fury book has been, methinks it will pale in comparison to the entertainment value all of Mueller’s intercepted recordings will provide. Just imagine the racism, fascism and Nazism that’s in there. The GOP will be a smoking wreck after Trump is done because that’s the effect he has on everyone and everything he comes in contact with.

Even if the memo turns out to be empty (my belief), trump fans will believe that it shows that the investigation is illegitimate.
What it says won’t matter, what fox says about it will.

    • Cuberly Deux

As with most things Fox related it’s using hyperbolic language over and over to sow confusion and distrust. It’s never about facts it’s about controlling the tone of the narrative.

For example, see the Hillz prez coverage.

      • jimbo65

And Fox won’t care that classified intel sources and methods will have a devastating impact on the FBI. Which is the ultimate goal. Mission accomplished. Mother Russia would be so proud.

    • Halou

They are told that the memo is this or that, and Fox never lies. /s

    • tbj5

Memo is about Rosenstein approving a renewal of a FISA warrant on Carter Page.

There’s nothing about that that would be a credible cause for concern. There was enough evidence for the initial warrant after all.

Trump wants Devi to throw Rosenstein under the bus so he can fire Rosenstein.

  • tbj5

In case this didn’t get posted already: Team Treason had a deadline for more specific Russian sanctions today.

They said “Do we really need *more* sanctions, guys? It’s pretty mean. And we already have existing sanctions (that we aren’t enforcing) so we don’t need any more, right?”

But Democrats said Justice Stras was only placed on the federal bench after Republicans disregarded the “blue slip” tradition, which allows home state senators to sign off on judges from their home states.

“Rep. Devin Nunes, Trump’s stooge, attacks FBI”. Jan. 26, but still current.

    http://www.fresnobee.com/opinion/editorials/article196633904.html

What, pray tell, does Rep. Devin Nunes think he’s doing by waving around a secret memo attacking the FBI, the nation’s premier law enforcement agency?

He certainly isn’t representing his Central Valley constituents or Californians, who care much more about health care, jobs and, yes, protecting Dreamers than about the latest conspiracy theory.

Years ago, in the stone age of the internet, I got an email that outed my same-named married with kids cousin because the sender assumed someone posting online with my name and being gay had to be him.

Fortunately (?) my cousin being gay didn’t come as a shock to me (I got my first Playgirl and the Front Runner from him), nor, I don’t suppose, to anyone who knows him. Certainly not to his wife, or his now adult son, who my niece says is a chip off the ol’ block.

            But I’d rather die.

True story, and this is where my creep factor comes from:

When I was 19 or 20 my best friend and I were up at a cabin his folks owned. Not much to look at, but it served its purpose.

Anyway, we were rooting through the cabinets for something to eat and a box of cereal fell out and dumped all over me. But guess what, it wasn’t cereal at all.

Completely covered head to toe in Maggots I ran screaming from the cabin and straight into the nearby river. Stripped all of my clothes off and refused to put them on until I was absolutely sure every last one of those little fuckers was gone.

To this day just the thought is enough to skeeve me out.

By the way did you hear the one about the Boston Radio Broadcaster calling his 5-year old daughter an “annoying little pissant” today? Rather rude. http://people.com/babies/tom-brady-radio-host-called-daughter-annoying-little-pissant/

          • Well i like Tom because I am a Michigan Wolverine and he dates back to our glory days — he was on the team for our last national championship 20 years ago. That is the only reason I like the Pats now. The sports broadcaster was fired — but how stupid to say something like that in Boston!

I’ve seen them try though. Both in pitting incumbent women against each other across a state to instantly cut in half the number of women represented in a state legislature. I have also seen many colleges cut into parts, slicing and dicing campuses, to keep them from having any political power. I imagine women’s colleges have been included in that tactic too.

    Guess what?

The Dems have already been crushed in 2018.

This memo will be ENDLESSLY discussed 24/7 by CNN, etc despite the fact that it contains nothing of value. In addition, 45’s decision today to not enforce a law he himself signed (the Russian sanctions bill), which had complete bipartisan support, is absolute proof that the Dems don’t stand a chance.

Dr. Johan Galtung was absolutely correct about his forecast. Once full blown fascism has been achieved in DC by 45 and his monstrous regime you can expect many more than just illegals being purged from our society.

    • Oscarlating Wildely

I wouldn’t count on it. CNN is based on ratings. The typical American attention span is that of a gypsy moth. Some “stupid memo” will only captivate the US for so long. And then there’s another fact: 45 will crave more attention. He’ll find some other bon mot to get his base, and voila, new cycle.

    • Nah. Independent voters and moderate Republicans are not going to be easily swayed by this – in fact they are going to be even more disgusted by this tomfoolery. And as for Democrats? — this is just riling them up even more.

A different time. Congress was not controlled solely by the Republicans. American theofascists (Jerry Falwell et. al) had not yet totally infiltrated the corridors of government. There was occasional genuine bipartisanship, which no longer exists today.

    OT: https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2018/01/29/leaside-couple-in-shock-as-planters-with-human-remains-found-at-their-home.html

As Ron Smith watched the detective announce on live TV that investigators had found human bones buried in his backyard flower planters, he clutched his partner Karen Fraser’s hand.

“This is what we were afraid of,” Smith said.

For years, Bruce McArthur mowed their lawn and tended to their gardens, filling enormous planters with begonias and flowering vines. Now, McArthur is an accused serial killer and Fraser and Smith’s Leaside home has become a crime scene.

Police say they have found the remains of at least three different people at the bottom of large planters at their Mallory Cres. home. The police search is expanding to 30 properties McArthur had access to, and investigators anticipate they will uncover more remains.

Me: McArthur will likely be declared a dangerous offender, to be held “at her Majesty’s pleasure”

This means that unlike ordinary murderers, he’ll never come up for parole.

Sort of on topic, but not really:

The grouse spouse and I went out to dinner tonight. It was pretty mediocre, but thanks for asking. As we were wrapping up, the two asshats seated next to us left. We were pretty happy about it since they were dropping f bombs left and right and thought it would be cute to make fun of the preschooler speaking Spanish to her dad. Like I said, asshats. The waitress wandered by about that time to check on us, and we all commiserated about the men being jerks. At some point they had told her one of the guys had been married to a Filipino woman for 11 years, but that it was Obama’s fault she is unable to move to the US. I told her that I’m sure there is more to the story than “Blame Obama,” and she specifically said she stays out of politics and only knows what she is told. I encouraged her to do her own research and told a little story about my husband learning that lesson the hard way. She ended by saying she was going to watch the SOTU for the first time and try learning more. Then she dropped her bombshell. She doesn’t know the difference in Democrats and Republicans. I summarized by saying the Democrats gave you your health insurance, and the Republicans are taking it away. That caught her attention! With any luck she will give it some thought. On the way home, I was thinking about our interaction and was reminded of this poem.

Once, on ancient Earth, there was a human boy walking along a beach. There had just been a storm, and starfish had been scattered along the sands. The boy knew the fish would die, so he began to fling the fish to the sea. But every time he threw a starfish, another would wash ashore. “An old Earth man happened along and saw what the child was doing. He called out, ‘Boy, what are you doing?’ ” ‘Saving the starfish!’ replied the boy. ” ‘But your attempts are useless, child! Every time you save one, another one returns, often the same one! You can’t save them all, so why bother trying? Why does it matter, anyway?’ called the old man. “The boy thought about this for a while, a starfish in his hand; he answered, “Well, it matters to this one.” And then he flung the starfish into the welcoming sea.”

This hit home. Fri. I went for my physical and I got the blood test results over the weekend. I noticed the glucose level was the only high one. They call today and said they were concerned and are calling back tomorrow. i’m hoping they’re not going to say the big D word.

        • stevenj

What was the number? Was it an A1C test?

          • fuzzybits

Not sure about the A1C test. The number was 128.

          • was it a fasting test?
If you did not fast 128 is not high.
If you did fast, that number is prediabetic / borderline type 2 but needs to be confirmed with an A1C test. It is high but not very high.

          • fuzzybits

I’m hoping for some good news on it tomorrow. I know I need to lose some weight.

          • Bottom line — it is not a very high number. It is easily controllable. 200 is a high number. I would not sweat it.

          • stevenj

That’s not terrible. It’s at the very low end of diabetes. (type 2). My doctor would call that a mild case of diabetes.
An A1C test measures the sugar in your blood for the past 2-3 months and opposed to a simple hemoglobin test that measure the last 24 hrs. According to Kaiser 85 – 126 is considered the normal range.
Mine was in the 130’s when I first tested for it. Diet and exercise brought my numbers back to near normal. It is now generally below 110.
Also, did you fast before the test?

          • I had a number like that but the doctor made me do an A1C test — I did two of them and it was 4.9 twice — and he told me I was not. He said that some people just are sensitive with glucose tests. I really do not like to eat sweets (they tend to nauseate me) so it is not surprising.

          • stevenj

4.9 is an excellent number. Unfortunately diabetes runs in my family, especially my father’s side.

          • My mom is a type 2 but she has it very much under control for years and manages it with some medication. She even eats sweets occasionally. My dad never had it — and I am very similar to him physically so I guess I lucked out.

          • fuzzybits

Yea i did fast. I’m hoping I can do the same thing that you’ve done. Thanks for the advice. 😊

          • stevenj

I was also about 25lbs overweight. Cutting carbs way down and avoiding sugar like the plague + exercise and the weight rolled off. Now 5’9″ and 150 – just the weight loss alone helped with the blood sugar numbers. Do not need any medications – just vigilant eating and keeping the bod moving.
There are substitutions for all the bad stuff I shouldn’t eat. If you need any help with that let me know.

Cut and Paste from Pelosi’s email to her constituents last Friday. These had been coming about once a month but much more regularly the last few months.

A Betrayal of Our American Values

      #DreamActNow

The Administration’s anti-immigrant framework is an act of staggering cowardice which attempts to hold the DREAMers hostage to a hateful anti-immigrant scheme.

The 50 percent cut to legal immigration in the framework and the recent announcements to end Temporary Protected Status for Central Americans and Haitians are both part of the Trump Administration’s unmistakable, cruel campaign to make America white again.

This week Congresswoman Pelosi hosted a reception for Filipino World War II Veterans who had been awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for their exemplary service to our country.

It is often said that America is great because America is good. We are a great country that has been blessed and reinvigorated with the faith and family values of generations of immigrants. That is why so many faith leaders, even those who support the President, have recognized that immigration strengthens our families, our churches and our communities.

The DREAMers will not be ransomed for a hateful agenda that betrays our sacred American values.

      On Thin Ice

Now that the Trump Shutdown has ended, Congressional leaders must come together immediately to finish the bipartisan negotiations that have been taking place for months. Since September, Congress has failed to find agreement on a budget for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2018, and has instead passed four stop-gap spending bills.

President Trump and Congressional Republicans’ obsession with passing a tax scam to benefit the wealthiest and corporations blinded them to their responsibilities to the American people. Despite controlling the House, Senate and White House, they are so incompetent , so negligent that they couldn’t get it together to keep government open.

Unfortunately, there is a dark cloud over the Capitol because of their tax scam. Republicans continue to use the $2 trillion increase to the national debt that this tax scam created as an excuse to shortchange the domestic agenda. In our negotiations, Congressional Democrats have been fighting for a budget that increases funding for defense as well as domestic, bipartisan priorities, which we have proposed and sent to the President:

      • Immediate action on the opioid epidemic;

      • Funding for veterans’ infrastructure and services;

      • Reauthorizing community health centers and other health extenders;

      • Saving Americans’ endangered pensions;

      • Protecting the DREAMers;

      • Providing strong disaster recovery funding including Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands

and other victims of hurricanes and wildfires; and

      • A budget that funds the military and the domestic investments that keep our nation strong.

As Democrats continue to work to protect DREAMers in these negotiations, we are honoring our nation’s role as a beacon of hope to millions around the world. However, if there had never been one DREAMer, we would still have our work cut out for us to reach a bipartisan budget agreement which honors our responsibilities to the American people.

It is imperative that, with the next deadline coming in only a matter of weeks, the top Congressional leaders immediately come together to get the job done for the American people.

Sometimes, stories like this get “floated” on purpose by someone on the inside to just gauge public reaction. They see a shitstorm of negativity, and nothing happens, for now of course.

Of course, it should be noted that April Ryan (and a few others) reported on the fact that Trump tried to fire him last Summer, and while it didn’t happen, she also had her share of pundits on tv saying her facts were wrong. Turns out even though it didn’t make it to completion, the story was accurate.

This could be something similar. Nothing happens tomorrow and six months from now we learn it almost happened but someone talked him out of it.

Whoever said may we live in interesting times, wasn’t aware of what Trump could bring us. 🙂

      • BobSF_94117

It’s a good excuse to cancel the State of the Union or deliver it from the Oval Office on TV.

        • There was a tv show like that — Commander in Chief with Geena Davis as the first female US President 10 years ago. She was VP- and assumes the Presidency unexpectedly. She delivers her State of Union from the Oval Office. I remember the arguments — the Constitution calls for an annual report by the President but not necessarily a live speech in front of Congress. https://youtu.be/XR-fAkLHXgc

Gillibrand is on my shit list. Her opportunistic screwing of Franken was unforgivable. Another absolutely witless dem. Also she has zero gravitas. Jesus, people are calling this presidential timber? Gah

        • Well, I don’t like how she crapped all over the Clintons. She is in Hillary’s old seat, and the Clintons did a tremendous amount of fund raising for her and have supported her. There are times when it pays to not trash your friends when others are doing the work for you in politics. My opinion of Elizabeth Warren right now is similar – she has gone after Hillary too opportunistically.

    • Ninja0980

Trump is gonna fire Rosenstein and then take out Muller – he has to do it fast before the FBI and interested parties show Numes’ Memo for as a complete piece of shit. It’s Trumps way of avoiding any interview … at least that’s what he thinks. F’ing bunch of Republican scummy bottom feeders.

    • Oscarlating Wildely

He’s fighting time. He will get rid of Rosenstein, and if there’s no way to protect Mueller, he’ll do that as well. Some GOP will turn on him. And it may take all of two GOP in the Senate (wouldn’t that be a nice fuck you from McCain) that may start some wheels moving and pass something against his ass, or at least make Trump’s wheels fall off. If they put it on hold, that doesn’t bode well for the cases regarding gerrymandering.
And even if they are struck down, the fact is that in PA and elsewhere, the GOP will have gotten elected using gerrymandering maps for most of the decade, even when voters wanted otherwise.
P.S. I oppose gerrymandering when Democrats do it too, some of the groups filing this brief at SCOTUS only care if Democrats do it.

ANNOUNCER: . . .for the next twenty-four hours not much change
in temperature. A slight atmospheric disturbance of undetermined origin
is reported over Nova Scotia, causing a low pressure area to move down
rather rapidly over the northeastern states, bringing a forecast of
    rain, accompanied by winds of light gale force. Maximum temperature 66;
minimum 48. This weather report comes to you from the Government Weather
Bureau. . . . We now take you to the Meridian Room in the Hotel Park
Plaza in downtown New York, where you will be entertained by the music
of Ramón Raquello and his orchestra.

(MUSIC: SPANISH THEME SONG [A TANGO] . . . FADES)

ANNOUNCER THREE: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.
From the Meridian Room in the Park Plaza in New York City, we bring you
the music of Ramón Raquello and his orchestra. With a touch of the
Spanish. Ramón Raquello leads off with “La Cumparsita.”

    (PIECE STARTS PLAYING)

ANNOUNCER TWO: Ladies and gentlemen, we interrupt our
program of dance music to bring you a special bulletin from the
Intercontinental Radio News. At twenty minutes before eight, central
time, Professor Farrell of the Mount Jennings Observatory, Chicago,
Illinois, reports observing several explosions of incandescent gas,
occurring at regular intervals on the planet Mars. The spectroscope
indicates the gas to be hydrogen and moving towards the earth with
enormous velocity. Professor Pierson of the Observatory at Princeton
confirms Farrell’s observation, and describes the phenomenon as (quote)
like a jet of blue flame shot from a gun (unquote). We now return you to
the music of Ramón Raquello, playing for you in the Meridian Room of
the Park Plaza Hotel, situated in downtown New York.

It’s up to the people to save the rule of law, but they have no leadership and can’t rely on the corporate press. I simply will not lie and tell you that I think you’re suddenly going to change and stand up to them, because I don’t believe you will.

OT: Well, the angel is re-done (from red, which with a burgundy dress, wasn’t that great anyway) to a bright Christmas green. I would’ve done it in gold, but I’m out of yellow half watt LEDs. The photo isn’t worth showing; without flash, you can’t see the angel and the light is a blur. With the flash, you can’t see the light.

The light jar didn’t go so well; I had a bad connection on the ferrite ring and can’t, once it’s soldered in, replace it without junking the whole board. It’s not a problem, but I’ll retry this tomorrow evening when I’m rested.

Well the fundamental fact is the investigation never ends. There are dozens if not more people in the FBI working on this case and it doesn’t get shut down it just spans out on different spider webs. Mueller already is feeding NYC the case and Im sure he is sending all findings to others. The issue is will the GOP controlled Congress do a damn thing bout it when its time to stand up.

OT: submitted for your consideration. A discussion of Disqus’s LIMIT of 1000 blocks (after which they tell you, no, you’ve reached your limit, you can’t block anyone else: no matter how hateful or grift-full)

    • Treant

If you have seriously found a thousand trolls, it may be time for a medal. But perhaps your definition of troll might-could be reconsidered, too, depending on what that is.

      • William

How many of those blocks are people telling about their stride mother’s fabulous new job at Google?

        • Treant

That, too. I tend to not block those–Joe takes care of them fast enough, and they’re usually only around for one post. Two, max.

I also clean out my block list to remove those kinds of blocks every now and again.

I just checked; there are 40 on my list. I could get rid of at least half if I wished to make the effort.

        • JCF

A bunch! See the Cali-hating-Badger also lectures me on not blocking spammers.

…and again, NEVER says WHY the limit is 1000. I’m guessing that, particularly w/ the spammers, Disqus is getting a cut! That’s why they don’t want them blocked (enough blocks lead to “this comment is in moderation” right?)

          • Treant

Think so. I don’t believe downvotes do anything any longer and I’m not sure if anybody bothers with them.

A thousand blocks per user seems pretty reasonable. Given the number of users, the potential database size could get rather hefty.

          • JCF

Is that it? Bandwidth of a data base? The Badger NEVER answers my question: just repeats “Limit is 1000” 3 times, till cutting me off.

          • Treant

More storage space and number of storage rows, assuming a standard SQL database. Some older ones are limited to 2 billion rows. Which sounds like a lot.

Until you realize that 1,000 blocks per user, with 2 billion rows, leaves you enough blocks for…2 million users. Assuming a relational database with one row per block, which is certainly easiest.

More modern versions will allow for more, potentially even as many rows as there is storage space. And space is cheap, but it does tend to go fast…

          • William

How much longer will Joe last on Disqus? Seems like he’s changed comment host (or whatever it’s called) twice since I’ve been here.

          • Treant

            Tick-tock. 🙂

Until it causes more grief than it’s worth, probably. Or he changes hosts. Or he feels like it. Or Shelley gives him grief about it.

I wish we had a DM feature. There are times I would like to continue a conversation with someone but hate to clog the board with personal messages.

          • Treant

I’m rather glad we don’t, given some of the accusatory or flat out untrue statements that erupt from people on an open board.

I really don’t want to see what they’d call me if they weren’t being watched by other people.

If we had it, given the option to do so, I’d shut it down for my account.

          • Gretchen

            That’s a good point. I hadn’t thought of that.

          • Treant

BTDT, eventually quit management on another site because of a huge number of issues with people trolling each other.

They did eventually shut down private messaging and moderate their boards a little more, but by that time I had been gone for ages. Nowadays I only post rarely and kind of radiate that I don’t much care. 🙂

          • Gretchen

Thanks for sharing your experience. The only problem (for me) is that I can’t ask you a million questions about soap. Then again that probably puts the argument squarely in your favor again!

          • Treant

            (it does). 🙂

Naw, seriously, just do it on an open forum. Wait until summer when the gardening discussions start reaching 300 comments (between PickyPecker, who owns a nursery, and me who grows everything from seed for 2,000 square feet of flower garden, we kind of get into it).

          • Gretchen

I want in on the gardening too. This will be my second year with a full-fledged garden outside of containers. I have already been pouring over seed catalogs and googling the merits and limitations of each seed. I’m obsessed.

          • Treant

Join the group. 🙂 Don’t ignore that a lot of vegetables and flowers (depending on what you like) can be heirloomed and stored over winter. About half my plants are daughters of the year before, half don’t breed true and can’t be stabilized.

At this point, my red salvia is unique to my garden and a few others that I supply. It’s been bred to have the particular characteristics that I wanted.

And it’s incredibly easy to do as long as you don’t get guilty about sprouting 300 plants just to keep 70 (and destroying the others as not having bred true to what you want).

          • William

I had amazing red salvia in my yard in Austin. We also had chickens. Every time we moved the chicken yard, the old one would fill with salvia.

          • Treant

Were they eating the seeds and fertilizing them as they came out?

I get sparrows that do that.

          • Treant

And with that, I have to get to bed; it’s pushing 3 AM here. But I’ll reply tomorrow to anything you type this evening yet.

          • Gretchen

Thanks for the advice. I’m heading to read my new book. The grouse spouse gets up for work in an hour or so, and then it’s my turn to sleep. My days and nights are just turned around; we don’t literally take turns sleeping.

          • Ninja0980

I like gardening but the hubby is all in now on bird feeders so we have several of them in our yard now.
Mind you, we also have a hawk that likes our back yard right now so suffice to say, we haven’t had many takers for the bird seed the past week or so.

          • Gretchen

I didn’t expect to love gardening so much, but I really find a lot of pleasure in watching things grow. I am the granddaughter of 10 generations of farmers, and I live on 16 acres. There is something inside me that just calls to me about gardening.

We have quite a few hawks in our area. It’s bad enough that we don’t let our little dogs go outside without the larger ones to deter any interest from the hawks. Our little Belle is just the right size for a hawk to scoop up for dinner.

          • whollyfool

I wish we had a forum. Sometimes (often) there is a story I think is important but I don’t want to post OT too early on a newer thread, or on a post where OT might be considered disrespectful….

Some days I wish we had a secure way to exchange personal contact information. There are some people here I’d love to meet, especially those in my region. (And I don’t meet for a hook up, just because they seem like interesting people).

      • JCF

Fortunately, there aren’t that many here at JMG. At someplace like The Hill? Even Rawstory. I consider that I’m doing a mofo PUBLIC SERVICE by Flagging & Blocking them.

        http://s2.quickmeme.com/img/60/601b74314fec1589fa9605672eb580a1d11dcbfb146a8f9aaee671c4801c0007.jpg

        • Treant

Tru dat. I tend to just stay here.

Even so, there are certainly those whose opinion I do not wish to see. I’m sure their opinion is the same as some have made it a point to post that fact with my name attached…we don’t need to discuss how much it concerned me. 🙂

And I’m always happy to punch their victim card on the way to blocking them if they wish (or, in several cases, punch their large, red, blinking buttons to make sure they never unblock me again as I don’t wish to deal with them in either direction).

        • Gretchen

I haven’t blocked many…maybe 12, but I tend to only read the comments on friendly sites. There isn’t much point in arguing with people who have no interest in your point of view. Friendly debate is great. Getting my head bitten off isn’t much fun for me or my blood pressure. Someone on here took offense to something I said recently and got pretty nasty to me. I blocked him/her pretty quickly. I don’t need that kind of stress especially not when I am generally among friends.

          • William

I block outright assholes, whether or not they are talking to me.

          • Gretchen

That too. Fortunately between here and Friendly Atheist, I don’t find all that many.

          • JCF

You know that drop down menu of why you’re flagging a post? From the first, I suspected that “I disagree w/ this user” might be a trap (if you check it, YOU will pay the consequences!). For those who weren’t outright bigots or spammers, but just assholes/trolls, it was simpler to just block them (w/o giving a rationale). Of course, I didn’t know I was going to run into this limit.

Assholes upset me. Call me a Special Snowflake if you will, I just Do.Not.Want.to.See.Their.Assholery. Why is that so hard for Disqus-Badger (or anyone else, for that matter) to understand?

          • Reality.Bites

I refuse to read Republicans or Bernie Bros – which is not to say supporters of the Democratic Party who favoured his nomination, although I disagree with them vehemently on that issue. And no Greens, past present or future.

The US is a highly polarized split and a country whose hold on democracy is extremely tenuous. I have no time for anyone who isn’t completely devoted to fighting the Republicans, not supporting some fantasy utopia.

It seems I have about 140 people blocked, but I suspect the majority are long since departed one-day trolls. There are only a handful of people I’ve blocked who I ever see replies to.

          • Gretchen

I don’t blame you a bit. There’s no need to listen to nonsense.

      • Ninja0980

I found a ton of them on mediate, hence why I don’t go there anymore.

        • JCF

          Same.

          • Ninja0980

Damn shame too, ruined what was once a good site.

        • Treant

That. If a place were inundated by trolls, the quality can’t be that high.

I abandoned DailyKos during the primary for that reason. And then I just sort of never went back; the community was less than pleasant.

          • Ninja0980

            It still isn’t.
Such a shame because on Andrew Cuomo, they are right on the money.
Anyone who helps Republicans stay in power the way he has does need to get primaried but the Bernie Brats alienated so many folks that no one wants to get behind a candidate of theirs anymore, which is why Cuomo will win again.

          • Treant

On the rare occasions that I’ve been suckered back, I’m immediately turned off by the quality of and attitude in the comments. I logged out of my account ages ago and don’t see myself logging in any time soon.

          • Ninja0980

Never got an account and after the 16 primaries, never will.
Americablog is another place I used to like but went downhill.
Heck even here, some people changed after the primaries, and not for the better…

          • Treant

Tell me about it. Even I developed a serious hate for Bernie, a hate I generally reserve for the dishonest, those who cheat students, people who lie, or who tell me I don’t matter.

Oh. Wait. OK, that was justified.

      • JCF

As I said to the Badger: my block criteria is MY business. As anyone else’s (or non-block criteria) is theirs.

        • Treant

Save that their database space and server upgrades are their business. 🙂 Hence the limitations in many cases.

Personally, I’d write it so the Admins can add more blocks to a given account if requested. Most won’t request, they’ll live with it. More still, like me, won’t ever approach the limit (if it ever gets that bad here, I’ll be leaving).

          • JCF

“Save that their database space and server upgrades are their business.”

If that had been presented to me by the Moderator, it would have gone SOME ways in satisfying me (though I might still have pressed for the limit to be removed in the next *scheduled* upgrade). Instead, I was treated to the “Because I said so/1000” regurgitation. Thanks, I think I saw through “Because I said so” by about age 5.

          • Treant

You’re dealing with a computer administrator. Most of them have the personalities of slime molds. Not to insult the slime molds, most that I’ve met have been very interesting to watch.

Is all of this already dead?? I believe so.
Canada has apparently moved much further on this idea than the US has, and there are definite plans for LGBT inclusion in the YUUUUGE Canadian History Hall being constructed in Ottawa…they will be interviewing a lot of eldergays for it before the Boomer/Stonewall Generation passes on to history.

    http://www.historymuseum.ca/media/canadian-museum-of-history-signs-collaboration-agreement-with-canadian-lesbian-and-gay-archives/

    • No, all the progress LGBT people in the USA have made in the half century since Compton’s Cafeteria and Stonewall Riots are not reversed. Trumpism is a temporary setback . There is a very good chance that the USA will elect a Democratic Congress in November that will stymie any potential anti-LGBT legislation. Not only that, the progress we have made at the State level stays. And in Northern Virginia Dania Rohm just defeated a powerful long-term sitting State Senator. I don’t think its over.

      • whollyfool

I think (hope) we have won enough hearts and minds that there is no going back, as long as we are vigilant. There are so many people out that lots of people know an LGBT person (maybe a family member), or knows someone who knows….

That and MeToo are what keep me hopeful these days.

Sure, I agree with your post, but that’s not what I wrote. My post said that the US National LGBT museum that was proposed in 2015 has fallen off the radar after I searched for the status yesterday.. I don’t think that it will happen on any foreseeable time schedule . No cancellation notice was given, but no site was selected either. The Smithsonian was the proposed curator.

It’s really discouraging to put a lot of effort and links into a post if no one can be bothered to read it. I don’t want to argue about something I never said or implied. Treat others the way you wish to be treated when they reply to your posts.

Hillary had a few paragraphs of potentially mismarked classified information on a private server that there is no indication was ever hacked, and the GOP calls were that she should not only be ineligible for office, but that she should be locked up.

These people were hand-delivered secret information with the clear direction of who it should be limited to, and decided to ACTIVELY pass it around to the whole GOP side of Congress, and now are releasing it to the public.

Why aren’t they being rounded up for jail time, by their own standards?

    • Friday

Probably part of the reason is that this ‘classified’ info is just some Republican’s opinion anhd may contain no actual information, just general accusations and obfuscations about events that have already been documented as not what the Republicans say.

  • LesbianTippingHabits

So why isn’t Chelsea Manning running as a Republican?

    • Dazzer

That’s been crossing my mind, as well.

I must admit, I just don’t understand her. Obviously she has her own political issues that she wants to raise – and that’s fair enough – but I can’t see why she’s calling herself a Democrat when she clearly isn’t.

      • LesbianTippingHabits

I don’t understand her either, but she has the right to participate in electoral politics.

There is no right to succeed in anything, however, so I guess that Maryland Democrats will deliver the verdict.

If @realdonaldtrump attempts to sabotage the #TrumpRussia investigation or fire Mueller thousands will take to the streets in protest. Find or create an event near you: http://bit.ly/2z4rSMT #ProtectMueller

      “or”

I was wondering about that: who pulls the Emergency Brake, and when, if it’s not strictly speaking, a firing of Mueller? If Rosenstein is fired?

      • canoebum

Rosenstein’s head is on the block. Der Herr wants him out so he can appoint someone who will fire Mueller. The ugly is just getting started. The Menace not only wants Mueller fired, he wants all the evidence and investigative reports destroyed as well.

      • GayOldLady

I was wondering the same thing. It looks like Rosenstein is the target and a way to stop Mueller without actually firing him.

    • TuuxKabin

Thanks. We’re geared up. Will go.

    • JCF

Really, though, “taking to the streets in protest” (ala a march) won’t be enough. Just the other day, I passed a local Federal building. THAT is where protest will have to go. Shut it down. All of them. (I mean nonviolently, of course)

Needless to say, I hope this won’t be necessary…

I can’t wait to find out out exactly what Putin has on Nunes and his pal, Kevin McCarthy. Both are worse than Halderman & Kissenger when it comes to pandering to a crooked President. It’s safe bet Putin’s blackmailing them too.
