Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe Steps Down

NBC News reports:

FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe stepped down Monday, multiple sources familiar with the matter told NBC News. McCabe will remain on the FBI payroll until he is eligible to retire with full benefits in mid-March, the sources said. One source familiar said McCabe was exercising his retirement eligibility and characterized his decision as “stepping aside.”

McCabe has been at the center of ongoing tensions between the White House and the FBI and has reportedly been under pressure to quit from President Donald Trump, whose campaign is being investigated for possible collusion with Russia.

Earlier this month, the Washington Post reported that after Trump had fired FBI Director James Comey, he met with McCabe in the Oval Office and asked him whom he voted for in the 2016 election.

A long career servant, McCabe had served at the FBI since 1996 under former directors Robert Mueller and Comey. Trump was asked on Monday whether he knew McCabe was stepping aside and the president did not answer.

Here’s hoping he’s going straight to Mueller’s office.

  • Robert Anthony

So what are the consequences of this?

  • TimCA

Reposting this from the previous thread.

I remember Rachel Maddow bringing up that the GOP seems to be systematically smearing each individual with whom James Comey contemporaneously documented Trump’s attempt to obstruct the FBI’s investigation. Andrew McCabe is one of those people.

    • Leo

Only 1:10EST. Enough time for her to retool A-C blocks.

      • TimCA

        A-C blocks? What’s that? 🙂
Certainly enough time for her to retool tonight’s show.

        • Leo

Her programming between between commercial breaks. 1st and longest is A, etc. She did an in-depth interview with her staff and producers explaining it and jokingly complains about late breaking news that messes up her entire show formatting.

          • TimCA

Thanks. I was thinking something along those lines but wasn’t sure. After Googling I could only come up with references to cinder blocks. lol

        The day is still young

    • Steven B

McCabe is the final person from that group remaining on the FBI staff. All the others have been disposed of. I’m crossing my fingers this doesn’t jeopardize any of them as potential witnesses in the Comey firing.

      • William

This should make them free to testify about anything. They don’t have to worry about any conflicts.

        • Taylor Bixler

          That was my thinking too.
Mueller: Mr. McCabe, come on down…

        • j.martindale

I don’t think it works quite like that. It is altogether dependent on the form of the information you are talking about. Ongoing investigations, for instance, would surely be off limits. They also investigate matters that are designated secret.

        • Steven B

Trump’s plan is to tarnish McCabe’s value as a witness by being able to say he left the FBI due to pro-Clinton, anti-Trump bias. Wray was—until today—blocking that. Then something happened. What was that something?

McCabe is still retiring in March; he has enough accumulated leave that he can resign his position now and—per CNN—still retire with a full pension. But Trump and his allies will now be able to claim—in future proceedings—that McCabe had to leave early due to “controversy.”
Next in line will be Rod Rosenstein.

So, yes, he’s still eligible to stand as a witness but will the effort to discredit him as a witness be successful? These people are truly evil.

  • Paula

    C’mon, Andy. DOCUMENT DUMP!

  • Leo

We saw this early retirement coming from the R’s attacks but for it to be this abruptly early from March? What happened…something happened.

  • Steven B

This is worse than it seems. McCabe is the last remaining FBI person who Comey contemporaneously told about his loyalty pledge chat with Trump. If they are all somehow discredited as witnesses then it’s he said/he said.

  • Ninja0980

He isn’t retiring per se until March when he can get his pension.

      • Lumpy Gaga

‘Twas weeks ago Trey Benghazi said he didn’t think McCabe would last the week.

  • Taylor Bixler

Meanwhile the Fucking Moron will think that he’s “winning” by intimidating the FBI & removing his enemies, unaware of the fact that the longtime veterans will not happily sit idly by while watching their fellow, loyal veterans & comrades purged by the shitgibbon. I suspect they are biding their time, redoubling their efforts to gather & document information, quietly making their strategic moves, until they strike back

Trump Launched Campaign to Discredit FBI Witnesses

President Trump “pressed senior aides last June to devise and carry out a campaign to discredit senior FBI officials after learning that those specific employees were likely to be witnesses against him as part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation,” Foreign Policy reports.

“In testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee on June 8, recently fired FBI Director James Comey disclosed that he spoke contemporaneously with other senior bureau officials about potentially improper efforts by the president to curtail the FBI’s investigation of alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia to interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.”

We have NO leadership and cannot rely on the CORPORATE press to stop this criminal government from subverting the rule of law.

Massive and relentless protests, coupled with economic measures, are absolutely necessary to save this democracy, to STOP the Trump/GOP ongoing coup.

The midterms are NOT secure, and the fledgling one-party dictatorship is weaponizing law enforcement, obstructing a legal investigation into Trump’s past and present behaviour, and stacking the courts with its fanatics.

They are subverting the rule of law right in front of your eyes, and the MSM are HELPING THEM, talking about Al Capone’s chance to “hit reset” with his SOTU speech.

Your chances to stop the destruction of your democracy are slipping through your fingers, as the Democrats do NOTHING, and the press turn a blind eye to Trump/GOP subversion!

By their illegal actions, the authority of this government is FORFEIT; and if no one else will defend the rule of law, YOU must; or ALL IS LOST.

    • What always seems to go unsaid in high school history classes: The first year after America entered WWII didn’t go so great. Now everyone talks about it as if victory were inevitable, but at the time folks were scared shitless that the Axis powers would win. Keep the hope and resistance. Today was freedom for Ravi Ragbir, released from ICE detention. He reported for usual ‘check in,’ in NYC, Jan 3. Demonstrations for his Justice, 8 arrests, he was detained and removed to Florida for deportation to Trinidad. Fla judge had him returned to NYC. Judge here ordered his release today. Individual victories help. They matter.

    McCabe didn’t retire—he was ‘removed’

    https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/1/29/1736891/-McCabe-didn-t-retire-he-was-removed

The Trump regime is purging federal law enforcement of people loyal to the Constitution and replacing them with its toadies. They are weaponizing federal law enforcement in their move to turn this country into a banana republic, and no one–NO ONE–is stopping them. Where is the press? Where are the Democrats?

I’m so ashamed of this evil and cowardly country! This is no longer a free country, and Americans are no longer a free people.
