US Ambassador To Panama Resigns Over Trump’s Racist Comments, First In US Diplomatic Corp To Do So

The Independent reports:

The US ambassador to Panama has resigned from his post on principle, writing in a resignation letter to the State Department that he can no longer serve the Trump administration, according to Reuters. The US State Department confirmed the departure of John D Feeley, saying he decided to “retire for personal reasons, as of 9 March this year”.

“As a junior foreign service officer, I signed an oath to serve faithfully the President and his administration in an apolitical fashion, even when I might not agree with certain policies. My instructors made clear that if I believed I could not do that, I would be honour-bound to resign. That time has come,” Mr Feeley said.

One might say Trump has the “MAGAs” touch.

    From Wiki:

“In September 2014, he assessed the development of LGBT rights in Latin America saying “It is the cultural heritage of machismo, which is a bad thing in many ways … not just in the manifestation of anti-LGBT attitudes”. He added: “We have seen in some places — Argentina, Uruguay — some very progressive, advanced thinking”. He expressed support for Wally Brewster, whose nomination to be Ambassador to the Dominican Republic was encountering opposition because he was in a same-sex marriage.”

    • clay

Remember his photo-opp crowd when he signed the IN discrimination law?

  • zhera

It’s great that he does this, but I’m a little baffled at THIS being the final straw. Everybody knew Donnie’s a racist. Not exactly shocking news, there.

What about CHIP? Tax reform? The attempt at killing ACA? The ambassador could live with that?

Nevermind me, I’m just feeling bitchy. I want this latest ‘scandal’ to hang around the neck of every single GOPer, not just Donnie Dotard. Because THEY are as bad as he is, they’re just better at hiding it.

    • kareemachan

He was talking about how this would affect him doing his job, not the administration in general.

Pretty sure that means he can no longer stand to be a part of the disgraceful party/administration/whatever, not that it makes his job as ambassador too difficult.

    • Scott Carpenter

Before it was all dog-whistle stuff, now it’s right out in the open.

No. Don’t nevermind you. You’re 100 percent right.

Hoekstra? (what? he can have more than one reason.)

      • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

I think the usually tolerant Dutch will throw a tarp over Hoekstra, bind it with duck tape, and toss him into the cargo hold of a leaky Russian trawler.

        • clay

          He apologized to them today.
He did not apologize to America or Americans.

          • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

Knowing Pete as the asshole he’s always been, his apology was a lie and he hopes the Dutch will forget about the whole thing.

They will not. We have not, either.

  • Attezz

I can’t pinpoint exactly why, but this makes me very proud. (The resignation, not the piece of shit in the white house which was built by “immigrants” from “shithole countries”)

  • Lazycrockett

“Why are you a racist?” was just shouted out at the MLK thing.

Will there be more? Unlike many of my JMG friends I am holding out that:

    A. There are Republicans of principle

    B. They will do something about this Trump blight.

So far I am being proven foolish in my beliefs given what he has gotten away with so far. Let’s see whether this controversy grows legs or whether it is simply diverted by another.

    • The_Wretched

I thought this delve into racist Trump language was the diversion. The story is that the WH is refusing a bipartisan deal the Congress agree to.

    • William

      Republicans of principle?

Oh my sides! Please, stop, I can’t take any more laughing.

    • jerry

With their cover-up and conspiracy theories about Simpson’s testimony, I think the whole GOP leadership has been complicit in the Russian election interference and laundering Russian money into GOP campaigns. So they’re obfuscating, delaying, deflecting, doing anything to halt the investigation, because it will eventually lead to their doorstep.

    • MichaelJ

Getting Trump out of office will only happen if two conditions are met. (1) The hardcore support of Trump breaks down to such a great extent so Republicans in Congress will not longer worry about a backlash at re-election time. (2) Major Republican donors either (a)demand that Congressional Republicans get rid of Trump or (b) make it clear to that they will continue supporting Republicans even if they move impeach Trump.
Now that Republicans have finally gotten the tax cuts they have wanted for so long I can envision the latter conditioning happening at some point. But I am having a hard time believing the first will ever be possible. At this point, Trump was basically right when he said “I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters.”

    • Gerry Fisher

I think that the plan all along was to milk him for as many signatures on legislation as possible, and then ditch him once his approval rating drops low enough so as not to upset the base.

I just called my teabagger congresswhores DC office and made the staffer stay on the phone for 25 minutes about trump being a racist pig and the congresswoman being an inept and complicit shill. The staffer was not happy. I caught him lying several times and ripped him for it.

    • Gustav2

        • Leo

Partial disclosure and I can’t give too much away but I actually helped her opponent Aaron Woolf. For the other readers (because you obviously know) she largely won because Matt Funicello of Glens Falls in the Green Party split the left and Woolf was forced (to my chagrin) to heavily back Cuomo who was under investigation and upstate (rightfully) despises. I don’t need to tell you the district’s probably the most conservative in the entire state. Karl Rove invested tens of millions.

Her husband runs IJR, the new conservative outlet for millennials thats trying to pitch towards the middle but had to fire some of its writers for Obama conspiracy theories.

She’s not going anywhere as the young darling of the Republican party for a LONG time.

          • Boreal

I know both of them. The district has had democrats represent it before in the very recent past and when i was younger.. It is where Gillibrand was first elected to Congress.
I don’t believe Funicello is running this time and people are geared up to oust her.

          • Leo

            Good luck, they’ll need it.

          • Boreal

Woolf’s a nice guy but ran a poor campaign (no insult intended to you if you worked on it) and did not excite the voters.
I think we will have a very good candidate this time around.

    • Ninja0980

Did the same with my “moderate” Congressman whom has to know by now that he has no chance of winning reelection.

      • Boreal

As Trump gets crazier, the non-crazy segment of the base gets more demoralized and less likely to vote in primaries.

It’s a very risky gamble. If they pull it off and retain their hold on the house, the Republican Party of George Bush’s era is dead.If there’s a blue wave there will be consequences in the Republican Party that may – I can’t imagine how – lead them to getting their act together and returning to the family of sane conservative parties that currently or recently have governed most of the USA’s major allies.

March in New York City on Jan. 20. CPW and W72 St down to Columbus Circle.
It’s been exactly a year since we last did it, with Alec Baldwin and Mark Ruffalo. I just tweeted Cher to come again too.

Cher was there? Two signs we’ll be holding:

      25.4 & DRUMPS LIES MATTER.

      • M Jackson

She came to the stage late — we had started to head back to the 1 train because of YouTube videos of crowds backed up to Broadway. And it was really cold and I wanted margaritas at Arriba Arriba.

        • TuuxKabin

          Cher? Late? Don’t tell me.

We entered at 67th & CPW. amd lingered around the School For Ethical Culture until it became a crush. Then walked north to 72nd and over to the #1 back uptown. Bus loads of Canadian students were stepping off charter buses. I was surprised Customs/Immigration let them pass.

I’m adding another sign. Anastasia Beaverhousen inspired, I’ve tweaked it just a bit:

DON’T BE STUPID. BE A SMARTY. VOTE OUT THE SHITHOLE PARTY.

I’ll add a ‘by Anastasia Beaverhousen’ below it.

          ARRIBA! ARRIBA! on 8th Avenue?

          • M Jackson

That’s just about where we were. We left a little early because we were hearing there were thousands of people over on Broadway and the 1 train, but that wasn’t really true.
Yes we made it to Arriba so I could get a little liquored up. The food is good (it was awful when I moved here 20 years ago) but it’s always too noisy and crowded, our bain of any restaurant. We go one block up to Azteca. I’m also a fan of Chevy’s in Times Square, like i’m a fan of a nice mall.

Not sure if this helps but FOX just clarified that he actually resigned 24 hrs before the comment. It may have still been because of his racism but it was not because of the comments.

  • Sam_Handwich

Dotard’s off to get his shithole fingered

      Too funny!!!
      Lol

    • OdieDenCO

you’d think Bethesda medical would have their own hazmat team.

    • safari

      Looks like a funeral procession.

      • boobert

        One can hope.

    • boobert

Did he fast for tests? lol

      • safari

        No cheeseburgers after midnight.

    • Reality.Bites

In case anyone’s wondering, the market’s up again nicely today and doesn’t seem overly breathless in anticipation.

      • safari

        Unlike Donald walking up stairs.

    • TuuxKabin

      mm

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

    Well, that’s one.

Trump will tweet on the character of this unknown diplomat questioning his qualifications

  • coram nobis

Guardian claims it’s not over the “shithole” remark, rather, that this career diplomat won’t work for Great Leader, period.

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/jan/12/us-ambassador-panama-trump-john-feeley

  • drbrentzenobia

My prediction: Trump will now fire him, effective immediately.

  • Cuberly Deux

Oh gawd, Paul Ryan is trying really hard to sound like a human being.

    • Reality.Bites

Imagine what the weird high-frequency components are doing to the poor dogs

      • Cuberly Deux

Garage doors are raising and lowering all over the neighborhood…

    • edrex

      he will fail.

  • Gustav2

When not here, I have been checking on the comments in the Columbus OH newspaper on Trump’s and Renacci’s comments…the usual rightwing trolls have disappeared!

    Whodathunkit!

Holy shitholes, the very R Dispatch printed:

“I’ve said all along the president many times says what people are thinking,” Renacci told Fox & Friends host Brian Kilmeade.

It’s a line the Wadsworth Republican has used repeatedly when asked about Trump, but it’s the first time Renacci has applied it to a statement widely condemned as overtly racist.

    • Cuberly Deux

      You’re kidding.

Just about everywhere else I look it’s right-wing bigots demanding “libs” admit they’d never live in Haiti. As if that’s somehow forcing an admission that donnie’s racism is universal….or something.

      • Gustav2

I am surprised, too. But we are Midwesterners, there is a limit. lol

      • edrex

my response is: “and i avoid alabama as well. what’s your point?”

        • Cuberly Deux

Ah, but if you disparage or stereotype a suthun state you’re being an elitist.

According to the alt-right donnie supporters.

          • edrex

            i AM an elitist.

          • Cuberly Deux

            lol…uh oh…

          • edrex

if anything, this administration has caused (allowed?) me to embrace my elitism. (but it should be obvious that i’m still a nice guy. right? RIGHT?!)

          • Cuberly Deux

            lol…well, I spose….

            😉

  • thatotherjean

God on ‘im. I wouldn’t want to represent a country headed by Donald Trump, either. Trump demonstrates, every single day, that he is neither fit nor worthy to be President of the United States.

    • Tor

What about our ambassador to that shithole, the Vatican?

  • The_Wretched

Trump’s relative silence over the end of year holidays gave him a bounce in tracking polls. He was up from 36 to 39 from mid Dec to now

  • coram nobis

Meanwhile, the (non-career) ambassador to the Netherlands apologizes for racist comment.

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jan/12/us-ambassador-to-the-hague-apologizes-for-making-muslim-remarks-after-denial

    • edrex

you know, i confuse the netherlands with afghanistan all the time.

      • coram nobis

Easy mistake, they’re both on the Eurasian landmass. Americans get so confused sometimes about geography.

Say, has Donald appointed our ambassador to Nambia yet?

        • Christopher Smith

No, Nambia’s on his shithole list because they stopped giving him free covfefe….

          • coram nobis

But a lot of the world covfefe crop comes from there!

    • -M-

Non-apology. Hoekstra wasn’t confused before, he was spreading disgusting right wing propaganda.

      • coram nobis

Yes, and he’s dodging. Doesn’t look terribly good in any event. We lose a career diplomat in Panama and get hacks like this guy in The Hague.

  • chrisinphx

Ugh, I’m glad that there is a shit storm brewing that the trump stain will have to deal with but on the other hand calling other countries shitholes is one of the lesser offensive things he has said and done. It’s cute what finally makes people say enough.

  • GanymedeRenard

I trust there will be more to come. Show the vile racist POS that there’s still dignity within the diplomatic corps serving under him.

    • canoebum

…while there still is a diplomatic corps. They’re working as diligently as possible to kill the Department of State in its entirety.

      • GanymedeRenard

        So sad and so true.

  • Michael White

Any other people of honor in this misadminstration? Thought not.

  • YUGE

    No one cares.

  • JCF

    Thank you, sir.

  • Kendall

I’m amused and saddened that it’s being referred to as the “first” – the presumption being, there’ll be more.

(Or there already have been and I’m just behind on news, as usual?)

  • YUGE

Save money and shut down all these embassies and fire all these useless losers.
