One Of Us: Nazis Cheer Trump’s “Shithole” Message

The New York Times reports:

Richard Spencer, the white nationalist leader, said on Friday that conservatives defending Mr. Trump on Fox News should stop saying it was about economics and legal systems, rather than race.

“It’s obviously all about race, and to their credit, liberals point out the obvious,” he said.

The Daily Stormer, a neo-Nazi website, likewise welcomed Mr. Trump’s comments. “This is encouraging and refreshing, as it indicates Trump is more or less on the same page as us with regards to race and immigration,” the site said.

  • BJORN RAGNVALDR

He pissed them off when he wobbled on immigration so he had to make sure they knew he would stick with the agenda they want. Until a better deal comes.

Know what? I couldn’t care less if Trump’s base likes what he says because I don’t particularly care what a bunch of swastika wearing, torch bearing, scalp Nairing Nazis have to say. And at this point, all of his base fits that category, whether they believe they do or not.
Fuck off, Republicans. he’s yours and you’re his.

  • Sálmur

Well, I take comfort in the fact that in the far future, if we survive that long, all of humanity will more than likely be people of color – so racism will become extinct. I love white people, hell my mother is white, but – yea ….I just don’t know how to feel anymore about the racism I’m seeing coming out of corridors of power in every possible manifestation from the police state to this. I’m not angry or upset even. I just think that in order for humanity to survive with itself, we will have to be one race. And obviously (and thankfully even) that race cannot be white.

    • Tomcat

Mankind has found reasons to hate each other forever and that will never change. Sorry to have to say this but it is in the genes of every race.

      • Sálmur

I don’t think it’s in our genes and I don’t think it is something that has been with us forever, hate. That’s an easy way to say that this problem doesn’t come somewhere because it does. What I can say is that racism specifically as we know it started at the beginning of the early modern period. I have a sneaking suspicion that it was not this way in the beginning, that the origins of humanity lie outside patriarchy, religiosity and militarism…which is where the ‘hate’ comes from….men/religion and wars
        So much to unpack………

    • Dazzer

I can’t find the article, but I read somewhere that by 2020 the majority of children born in London (where I live) will be bi-racial/mixed race.

As someone who has lived with mixed race cousins for all my life, I can’t see a problem with this (except my cousins are absolutely beautiful and when I go out drinking with my cousin who is three months younger than me, people remark how nice it is to see a father taking his daughter out.

But from a genetic point of view, it’s also a major successful survival technique for genes. The more mixed-up genes you have, the more strengths you have to call upon.

    • 2guysnamedjoe

Many other inconsequential differences can take racism’s place. Religion (NI, India-Pakistan), language, accent, even some rocks sticking out of the ocean (Falklands; Quemoy & Matsu) can be used to incite hatred and to send peoples off to war.

        • ChrisMorley

It’s an interesting lesson in international miscommunication.

…’Taiwan’s central news agency led the confusion in Asia by translating “shithole countries” as, in phonetics, “niao bu
sheng dan de guo jia”, which means, mysteriously, “countries where birds don’t lay eggs”.

In China, the People’s Daily decided it meant “countries that suck”, while Vietnam’s Youth newspaper in Ho Chi Minh City went for “rubbish states”. In Europe, Greece’s daily Ta Nea settled on “thieving countries”.

France’s venerable Le Monde did not quite get there with “pays de merde” – shit countries. But a sister French news site, Courrier International, went straight for the jugular with “trou a merde”, or hole of shit.’

          • Tomcat

ALL of our ancestors left shitholes when they hopped on a boat for a new life in an unknown land. They left famine, disease, poverty, war, oppressive governments, discrimination and a host of other hardships.

If everything had been hunky-dory back in the old country, they would have stayed.

—edit– I left out those people who were captured by force, put into chains and brought here against their will to be sold into slavery. They never had a choice.

Right, I was getting my P’s mixed up.

          • Dazzer

Not really. As far as the countries that got rid off them were concerned, both the Pilgrims and the Puritans were essentially vile.

No-one was sorry to see them go.

    • Racism never goes away. When the Irish Catholic immigrants came over in the mid-1800’s to escape starvation from the potato famine, and took any jobs they could find, they were not considered “white” – as hard as it it to believe now. The discrimination and hate directed at them lasted well into the 20th century. When two million Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire came over as a result of state sponsored persecution starting in 1890, they were not considered “white” (and still are not by neo nazis). Millions of Italian immigrants from the agricultural south of Italy who also came over then were considered too olive skinned to be accepted as “white” either. Racism and eugenics have a long and rich tradition in the USA.

  • OT- The flu season is very bad this year – the worst in 13 years, and the strain that is hitting is strong. My mom’s senior place in Palm Beach County was on lockdown last week — no visitors in or out – she was lucky enough to have flu symptoms for about four days but is over it. The flu vaccine this year seems not to have been very effective. I think the best strategy is simply to wash your hands in stores and take precautions if you are a senior or vulnerable . Americans need to wear masks in public if they sneeze like they do in Japan and other places. https://www.statnews.com/2018/01/12/flu-season-cdc/

    • Treant

Tell me about it. Back in the 1990’s was the last time I remember getting the flu. And I always get my shot.

This year? I’m on Day 12 of complete shutdown and looking at two more.

      • I am not giving you an upvote because that is weird but I hope you are OK! I am avoiding going out in crowded places – I have not had the flu in years (or ever as far as I know) and don’t want to pick it up. I don’t get colds either. I am going shopping late when people are not around.

        • William

Carry a flamethrower to clear your path.

          • Or eat lots of garlic. I think the advice of loading oneself with tons of garlic in flu outbreaks is to keep people at a distance naturally from your garlicky overpowering stench.

        • Treant

          What’s weird?

          • Dazzer

The fact that when you go out in public, you don’t ring a bell and shout “Unclean! Unclean!”?

          • Treant

One is only infectious from the day before one gets sick to about four days in–and the level decreases rapidly throughout. At the moment, I have no more chance of giving you the flu than your dog does. 🙂

However, I do ring a bell and shout, “Kinky! Kinky!” when out in public.

          • To give an upvote if you are sick. I don’t want to be happy that you have the flu! Aren’t upvotes like “oh that is great!” or am I making it to complicated? LOL

          • Treant

Too complicated. 🙂 It’s more “I acknowledge your statement and approve of it” than “I’m so glad you’re deathly ill!”

        • E.J.

When I’m sick I usually do my shopping late since fewer people are around…..might want to wear a mask

        • Treant

Batten down the hatches! You will require chicken noodle soup, fluids of whatever kind or nature you prefer, and lots of blankets.

Real quick. Pepper up your food. If you have a pepper mill turn that sucker grinding ’til you get carpal tunnel. Coriander as well when you can get it. Will help keep lungs clear.

          • Dazzer

The other thing that works is masses of ginger. And honey. And vitamin D.

          • TuuxKabin

Every winter I go vitamin D deficient. 50,000 mg doses, every Saturday until around April. We’ve been adding fresh ginger to a lot of dishes, and using powdered on cereal, and baked goodies.

Truth. For a cough, mince white onion, put into sterile glass jar. Cover with honey. Close. Let sit 8 hours or so. Cough syrup, and it’s not as awful tasting as it appears.

          • Dazzer

            Totally and utterly agree.

I use a similar recipe, except I tend to use minced garlic as well as the onion, and a large glas of ginger wine (which I don’t think you can get in the US).

Leave it for at least 25 hours.

Then put a teaspoonful in a mug, squeeze and add a wedge of lemon, pour in a tot of brandy/whisky/vodka/rum and then fill up with boiling water. Leave for five minutes to let the alcohol evaporate and sip slowly (and then use a spoon to eat the onion, garlic and lemon pips). It sounds disgusting, but against most flus, it’s a nuclear weapon.

          • TuuxKabin

Thank you. I made a list of those ingredients . Do I really have to leave it for 25 hours? Someone’s going to have to hold me back. The onion, garlic and lemon pips could make a good dressing, with plain yogurt for a creamy dressing, for something like bread salad. Nuclear bread salad. Provecho!

          • Cuberly Deux

.I made that savory bread pudding, it was surprisingly good btw…have enough leftovers for today and tomorrow. Aaaaaand I tend to like a bit of pepper so yep….it’s got a LOT of pepper…lol…

The precautions you mention are so important for people to perform. Thanks for mentioning.

I particularly like the suggestion about wearing a mask when you have a respiratory ailment. People in Japan have long lived in densely populated situations. This custom may have arisen from a need for that society to contain spreading contagion.

      • CB

Lots of masks in streets and on transit in China this past week. Lots of public announcements about staying germ free…and protecting others.

The absolute crassness of this man is enraging. I wonder if America can ever return to a level of civility in politics again. Never have we had such a vulgar, divisive, petty man in the presidency. And the divisions are not going to heal soon. When Obama became president, with his foot in both the white and Black communities, I was hopeful that white Americans who were fearful of minorities because, on the whole, they had little contact with or understanding of them would be charmed into a healthier relationship with the other races. But it has not happened. Who would have thought after the election of our first Black president that we would have to endure the open evil of a hateful bigot such as this?

    • SoCalGal20

I think Andrew Jackson (Trump’s hero) was pretty vulgar and divisive.

      • Treant

In an age that was more tolerant of such things, yes. But 2018 America?

    • another_steve

Thoughtful comment, j.martindale. Thanks. We can, all of us, only guess.

I believe that what is ultimately most useful to us as a species will prevail. Hatred and mistrust of the “other” is, ultimately, not most useful to us as a species.

In the fullness of time, it will fall away.

In nature, in the fullness of time, that which isn’t ultimately useful falls away.

My mom did one of these. Turns out my mom is apparently of European Jewish ancestry. Surprise!

My great grandmother was adopted and the orphanage burned down at some point in the early 1900s and the records were all lost. She never knew who her parents were but she always said she thought she was Jewish and the rest of the family was all, “Sure, Grandma”. Turns out Grandma was probably right.

      • TuuxKabin

A lot of us are finding that out, re: Jewish lineage. I think by osmosis I’ve converted. Good Jewish friend called me yenta good witch at her Christmas party. Love it. Go to a Jewish friend’s for a Christmas party and get an honorarium.

        • Yenta witch is actually “yenta makhesheyfe”. Here is how it is pronounced. Impress your friend by knowing the word in Yiddish. It is a generic word used for just about any objectionable female. https://forvo.com/word/yi/makhesheyfe/

Love “That Nice Jewish Boy from Nazareth” reference. My husband, I refer to as “That cute Irish boy from the Bronx.” Because he is.

I found out I have a bit of Native American heritage in my matriarchal line. My Grandmother was born in Puerto Rico to “pura” Spanish parents. Well, not so much after all. I did hear her say, once or twice, that Puerto Rican men would fuck anything that floated by the island. lol.

        • I love Puerto Rican men. You could actually be hired by the PR tourism authority and rebuild hotel occupancy numbers post Hurricane Maria with statements like that.

My Brother and I did took two different DNA tests. Both are nearly the same with a couple of 1% outliers. Norway /Scandanavian, Scotland, Ireland, Broadly Northern European (possibly Iceland) in order of the top four. A second or third cousin once did the maternal family history and published an obscure book tracing us back through that order and to include Iceland, then to North America founding Isle of Wight County, VA in 1634. Later being one of the founding families of Estill County, KY in 1808. Pretty much stayed put in that vicinity until the 1950’s Appalachian exodus to central and southern Ohio.

I had never really thought about it before except being intrigued as a teen with my cousins insistence upon our being Native American. Nope, not even a drop.

It will take more than a generation to repair the damage that Trump has done in just one year.
Three more years of him and his “Russia First” agenda and it will be forever irreversible. Not only will America have fallen so far behind but Russia, stepping forward each and every time Trump makes America step backwards, will entrench itself in all the areas where America is currently on top, and they will regard it as “Russophobic” aggression and push back hard if America tries to reclaim it’s place on the world stage.

Heaven help us all if he wins two or more terms in office.

    Waaaaaay O/T:

Even though I am not a huge paranormal kinda guy and describe myself as highly skeptical (rather than total disbeliever), one of my favorite movies is The Uninvited, from 1944. This is a elegant story about elegant people living in an elegant house…and ghosts.

An aspect of the sort is that one ghost is never seen but is rather, ah, smelled. “The mimosa! It’s overpowering!”

    Now, hold onto these thoughts…

I am restoring a huge old 1894 house. Yesterday, I arrived at the house in the afternoon. Justin, my main contractor, had been hard at work in the basement to finish the installation of the few remaining radiators.

We walked through the rooms in the basement as Justin pointed out what had been done, and then we stepped into the furnace room.

My nose was at once assaulted. The scent was almost overpowering.

“Geez! Do you smell that? WHEN did a cat get in to pee all over the room? Did you leave the back door open?”

The room reeked of cat piss. My eyes nearly watered from the intensity.

Justin replied: “Leave the back door open in this weather? Of course not. And the smell is so weird because this morning there was no smell. The smell arrived about an hour ago.”

I asked: “Were you working in the room at the time?”

    “Yes.”

    “Did you see a cat?”

“No. And how would a cat have gotten in?”

Well, then this all made no sense.

About an hour later, Travis stopped by, and we stepped into the furnace room. I watched as his nose twitched, and as his eyes slightly narrowed. I asked: “So, you smell it, too?”

Travis nodded. “Wow. A cat has been in here.”

This all friggin’ freaked me out. I had a damn stray cat IN the house, and it was spraying over stuff.

    Damn. Damn!

When I left late in the afternoon I made sure the finished library and parlor were closed off. There was no way I could handle my books, the rug, or furniture getting peed on. No way, man!

Today, I arrived at the house after lunch, and went right to Justin still working in the furnace room.

The tear-inducing scent was gone. Not a little gone but a 100% gone. There was no trace of the odorous.

Justin saw me sniffing. “Yea. Weird. I didn’t smell anything when I got here this morning.”

None of this made any sense. None! For, cat urine sooooooo does not dissipate overnight. It can linger for years. But, three people had been assaulted the previous afternoon with the olfactory insult.

Then I suddenly thought about The Uninvited.

Did my big old house have…a ghost cat?

I know, I know, this seems totally absurd but what else would explain the distinctive scent suddenly appearing and then vanishing entirely?

    Weird, man. Weird!

    • medaka

Wow. Excellent story. Please let us know if any other “events” occur….

    • Natty Enquirer

“Justin, my main contractor, had been hard at work in the basement to finish the installation of the few remaining radiators.” I bet the smell was related to this.

      • Ross

No, I have been working on the radiator system for three years now.

Never once during this long process has a cat pee odor resulted. Cutting pipes, threading them, and installing them does not smell like pee!

    • fuzzybits

That was just ghost kitty reminding you to take care of all the living kitty’s.

    • Dazzer

Invest in clary sage oil. It’s far and away the best way of covering and then neutralising the smell of cat pee.

Also, check for fungus. Some kinds of fungus and various insects smell just like cat pee.

Light – especially ultraviolet light – will kill a number of nasties in the fungi world. To drive off insects that you don’t know whether or not they exist – it’s a preventative rather than curative measure for insect activity – roughly cut up cucumber and spread it around the premises. This won’t ward off all insects, but if the smell of cat pee diminishes, it’ll tell you that the insect is from the cockroach family.

You clearly have a problem there – but I don’t think it’s ghosts.

      • Ross

As I mentioned, the smell was 100% gone this morning.

        • Dazzer

Yep. But by introducing light/moisture/heat/whatever into the environment, you changed the conditions in which the smell might have grown/flourished.

My best bet – from the information you’ve provided – is that you have an insect infestation somewhere along the line. And I’m willing to bet it’s a beetle or ant that’s doing it.

If you had that much scent and your eyes were watering, it suggests to me that it was a formic acid.

I’m not saying you’re wrong in your spiritual nalysis, but there are scientific possibilities here as well and before I got frightened, I’d recommend thinking about getting a pest person in. Not least because if it is an insect infestation, a closed door isn’t going to protect any of the soft furnishings you bring into the house.

I’m saying this from the position of someone who lives in a country where a house from 1864 can still be regarded a comparatively modern build.

          • Ross

I did not introduce light/moisture/heat/whatever into the environment.

For three years I have been working to restore the radiator system. This has involved cutting black pipe, threading it, and installing it, along with the attendant misc. parts.

At no point has a cat urine smell suddenly appeared, and then vanished.

Nor would anything we are doing CAUSE such an occurrence.

I have no explanation, and my cat ghost theory was intended as tongue-in-cheek.

            Mostly.

        • Scott Fitler

Get a crucifix from the Dollar store and walk through the basement yelling “The Power of Christ compels you!” just to be on the safe side.

Next time I fart, I’m blaming the resident ghost.

    • William

I lived in haunted house. It was weird at first. Mostly there were footsteps in the original part of the house. Later small things would go from closets to the middle of the living room floor during the night or when nobody was home. The best was the time my boyfriend was in the kitchen. The ghost threw an ice tray across the kitchen at him. He could not be convinced that I did not do it and was on the other side of the house. He freaked the second time the ghost threw an ice tray at his head. Again, I was not involved.

My cat was raised from kittenhood in that house. She would watch it move around the room. My dog would watch it too.

OT. I know some here seemingly adore Sullivan (Including Dan Savage) but I see him as producing 2 columns of somewhat intellectually astute content in a year of shit on average – vastly overrated, egocentric and way past his prime. He’s getting a ton of shit on Twitter for decrying the #MeToo movement in a NYMag piece.

The District of Columbia has four property classes, each with a different rate. If your property is mis-classified, you will likely be taxed at a significantly higher rate.

The four classes of property and their tax rates are listed below:

Class 1 Improved residential real property that is occupied and is used exclusively for non-transient residential dwelling purposes $0.85 per $100 of assessed value

Class 2 Commercial property (2 classes) Class 2a = $1.65 per $100 of the first $3 million of assessed value and Class 2b = $1.85 per $100 of assessed value more than $3 million

Class 3 Vacant property $5.00 per $100 of assessed value

Class 4 Blighted property $10 per $100 of assessed value*

Can we just get news shows that are left leaning with more female anchors, this is bullshit, one that i know women have to put up with, but some take it because of ideology like the dimbos at fox, then when they are fired or they finally get tired of the harassment they tell all about what went on in the workplace, meanwhile contradicting sexual harassment claims unless they were geared towards to attack democrats, which is what the network exists with the intentions to do. There was a clear double standard that was held to Hillary that neither her primary opponent or her general opponent ever had to put up with.

You never heard of the Mid-Atlantic accent? Always sounds like someone trying to cover a Noo Yawk accent to me.

      • Cuberly Deux

I knew that the accent derived from the east coast. I just didn’t know the degree to which it was cultivated outside of Hollywood.

      • I once read that the American dislike of the New York accent dates way back to the Revolutionary War. New York City was the headquarters of the British Army in North America and stayed occupied through the war- and Loyalist sympathies were strong there because the Dutch settlers really wanted nothing to do with the crazy revolutionaries in Boston and Philadelphia. New York was the one colony that initially abstained during the the vote for the Declaration of Independence. New York and its accent have been resented ever since.

    • safari

I know of at least one man who created his own accent.

    • Hank

They certainly never even taught speech in NYC public schools. My NY accent still comes out, quite often, despite having lived abroad and having British friends. My Rs always give me away!

      • After living in London for 15 years, my New Yawk accent transformed itself into something that resembled generic transatlantic North American. I am a mimic, and I can do a good Winston Churchill talking about the Abdication Crisis (Mrs. Simpson has two living husbands scattered about!) and I can even do a fair imitation of Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation Speech if I am drunk enough (seriously). However, now that I am in South Florida my Brooklyn roots have come back — especially when I say the word “dollar” apparently. My mom says I sound like an immigrant when I say that word – it drives her nuts.

      It’s called an American ACCENT.

      😉

    • Yup. It is called received American pronunciation or Mid Atlantic English. Up until the 1940’s the professional and upper classes (and actors) were taught to sound like Eleanor Roosevelt in order to be socially acceptable. Soft “r’s” were the rule. It has some resemblance to received British pronunciation of the time. I just read this big article on it — i have to find the reference. https://youtu.be/6P15knTJ0pQ

      • Cuberly Deux

I have zero clue how I’ve avoided learning about it’s provenance.

If you think about it, seems kind of sudden how it went out of fashion.

        • In the UK also. No one sounds like Queen Elizabeth anymore. Prince William is the perfect example of having what is considered an “upper middle class” London accent and not an “aristocratic” accent like his father’s. There is a big difference.

What, has Hannibal Lecter decided to run for office?

    • Oh, how I wish and hope Donald’s disappointed again.

      • Blake J Butler

There’s only one poll out from it, its small and from Gravis, and has it at 46-34 with saccone in the lead. The problem though is that Lamb has ties to the district, fits the demographic, and is focused on the direct issues in the district facing it.

        We still have until march.

        • Ninja0980

I’ll be happy if we win but won’t be shocked if we don’t.
If the PA Supreme Court or SCOTUS knocks down gerrymandering though, that will be a whole different ballgame.

          • Blake J Butler

Problem though is, Alabama was a shot in hell, even if it was against a child molesting theocrat.

Every district has outperformed considerably what the margin was in 2016, i imagine this will be a close race with Lamb being in the race, maybe a narrow loss. But still, even wastes of sperm the republicans run should be pulling in the margins higher, and part of that is with baby huey and the attitude towards the party.

OT: I don’t know if this was posted elsewhere but there’s a reason why Mark Wahlberg got the $$$ but if anything, it makes him even more shitty.

    https://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/mark-wahlberg-steps-out-amid-all-the-money-pay-gap-report/

“Mark Wahlberg is in hot water again after it was reported that he refused to approve Christopher Plummer as a replacement for Kevin Spacey in All the Money in the World. The Transformers actor, 46, allegedly asked to be paid over a million dollars before redoing his scenes alongside Plummer.

USA Today published a report on Thursday, January 11, saying that the actor — who had costar approval in his contract — wouldn’t approve the change when Spacey was removed from the movie after several men came forward accusing him of sexual misconduct.

“What he said was, ‘I will not approve Christopher Plummer unless you pay me.’ And that’s how he (expletive) them,” one person told the newspaper.”

OK, I really hope this pissed off Ridley Scott and that Mark is now labeled “difficult.” I got to say that if Michelle had pulled this kind of shit, she’d NEVER get another job.

    • Cuberly Deux

As others have pointed out, a multiple Oscar nominated actor stated outright she was willing to forgo pay and be available at any time to complete the project. Williams appears to have taken the reigns rather quickly after the Spacey mess. There’s considerable responsibility when it comes to a movie project. So many are involved. Williams comes across like she respects that.

I’m taking this Wahlberg story with a degree of skepticism. Unfortunately he’s an “actor” that’s in demand. I gotta wonder what his representation was responsible for negotiating vs what he himself was requesting.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

I honestly don’t get Mark Wahlberg’s appeal. I think his box office is inflated by the Transformer series. Besides he’s got some pretty shady history going on as well.

        • Cuberly Deux

          I’ve never understood his appeal.

Everything I’ve learned about Wahlberg was from watching The Happening. Oh lordy…what a bad bad bad movie.

    • Vista-Cruiser

Wait a minute. This thread is about how actual Nazis have taken over the US, and you think that movie gossip is more important???

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

I see a lot of OT posts including TV show recommendations. Also Mark Wahlberg himself has a NASTY history involving minorities so not totally OT.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Wahlberg#Arrests_and_conviction

“At 16, Wahlberg approached a middle-aged Vietnamese man named Thanh Lam on the street, and using a large wooden stick, bashed him over the head until he was knocked unconscious while calling him a “Vietnam fucking shit”. That same day, Wahlberg also attacked a second Vietnamese man named Hoa “Johnny” Trinh, sucker punching him in the eye. According to court documents regarding these crimes, when Wahlberg was arrested later that night and returned to the scene of
the first assault, he stated to police officers: “You don’t have to let
him identify me, I’ll tell you now that’s the mother-fucker whose head I
split open.”[16] Investigators also noted that Wahlberg “made numerous unsolicited racial statements about ‘gooks’ and ‘slant-eyed gooks’.[17][18]

For these crimes, Wahlberg was charged with attempted murder, pleaded guilty to assault, and was sentenced to two years in Suffolk County Deer Island House of Correction. He ultimately served only 45 days of his sentence,[17][19] but carries a permanent felony record. Wahlberg believed he had left Trinh permanently blind in one eye.[15][17][18] Trinh was interviewed in December 2014 by the Daily Mail; he revealed that he had already lost that eye during the Vietnam War, and did not know the identity of his assailant prior to being contacted by the media.[20]”

Also at the moment I’m pretty burned out on noting that Donald Fucking Trump is a Nazi and that the Nazis would gladly eat his poo. It’s something I’ve known circa 2016.

    • Yes! Been following it for the last couple days now.

  • Max_1

Just 7 days away and Trump has been in Office for one year…
    … And not one censure.

    • You’d think among all the useless but appropriate gestures Republicans could take, a simple motion of censure would be a no brainer, right?

But they won’t even do that much. And I saw the video of Paul Ryan making his remarks, all bent and hunched over, like he’s broken and has just given up.

      • joe ho

They fear the racist base, which now owns the GOP.

And Trump has given them a once in a lifetime opportunity to make their Randian vision as much a reality as it will ever be.

        • Cuberly Deux

Trump has given them cover for that Randian vision, but the price is their souls. It’s showing.

As much as people constantly harp on and on about the Dems being a disorganized and goal-less party I shake my head no. The GOP is fractured and beholding to the worst dregs and interests. And, it shows.

          • agcons

That’s been my impression since the campaign in 2016, although I admit it may contain a lot of wishful thinking: your Democrats are disorganised, but your Republicans are completely cracked and dropping shards rapidly, even if they appear to be holding together.

        • Friday

And a degradation of even common politeness they can use to blame the minorities and liberals for the results of what they keep screwing us all with, time and again.

      • Cuberly Deux

Quite the contrast to watch that compared to Maxine Waters.

Waters has an energy that’s quite infectious if you ask me. She just wasn’t having it and she wasn’t going to let it get her down. The GOP is THE problem, and she makes no bones about it.

      • He is not running for reelection according to reports. So yes.

        • Friday

Frankly, we couldn’t afford four more years of Republicans *wasting our nation’s time, never mind gutting, looting, and degrading it when the freaking planet ain’t getting any-less-increasingly-messed up. * But the Dotard not running for re-election would be a welcome break from listening to yelling idiots about it. Maybe he should quit the re-election campaign he officially started the week after the inauguration to be able to sue more if criticized, is all.

    • No. The Republicans control the House and the Senate. They censure their President, they will be primaried and voted out of office. This is why we need to take over both wings of our Congress this November – and why so many are not running for reelection.

      • JCF

“They censure their President, they will be primaried and voted out of office”

We don’t know that. I doubt every one of them would be primaried, and of those, I’m guessing MOST of them win their primaries.

Wanted to clarify on what I said below.
Yes, Sully is a piece of shit and overall I found his article about the Me Too Movement to be one as well.
But..he has a valid point even some progressives have made.
It is great that victims finally have a voice and that many of these predators are finally paying a price for what they’ve done.
Having said that, I also see the viewpoint of folks who point out that going the other way 100% isn’t good either.
While it is extremely rare for someone to lie about sexual assault/abuse, it DOES happen on rare occasions as we saw with the fake Roy Moore accuser.
Not to mention that given the fact so many people (sad to say) think that anyone who is accused is guilty until proven innocent and that accusers with red flags (like Al Franken’s) can never be questioned at all.
Perfect way for Democratic candidates to be taken down with false accusations, which I (and others) fear will happen.
And when that does, all the good that has come from Weinstein being busted will be thrown away.

    • Sully just likes to annoy people. He writes as if he is a word that rhymes with “itch” — but unlike “itch” his problem is something that cannot be relieved with a simple application of hydrocortisone cream. I would also say his writing is indicative of being a word that rhymes with being “blunt” that I prefer not to use here.

      • Ninja0980

I fully agree and thought most of his article was crap.
But he and others are right about how this movement can be used as a weapon, and that so many folks that should see it don’t.

        • I just hear his name and recoil. This goes back quite a while. He twists and turns and is superb at innuendo. But yes, I agree, me too cannot be seen as a war on heterosexual men. And Franken does appear to have been steamrolled just a little bit by his colleagues, everyone deserves a defense. .

          • Ninja0980

            Same here.
I make it a point to not watch Bill Maher if I see his name show up.

Hes been creeping on Hardball lately.

          • JCF

Is it possible to admit here that the Al Franken issue was simply a No-Win Situation? My first reaction (besides GROANING in agita over that freaking photo) was to wait for the Senate investigation. But to wait for a Rethug Senate, which had ZERO motivation to resolve his case, while the drip-drip-drip continued? [I think anyone expecting a “Unified Conspiracy of All Franken’s Accusers Alleging Completely Invented Incidents” to be found, is sadly deluding themselves.]

It was a No-Win Situation. Kirsten Gillibrand is left looking like a hanging judge, and undoubtedly there are those who are worse abusers still in the Senate. But the drip-drip-drip was ENDED the day Franken resigned. And I honestly believe Franken will have a (political) Act Two, down the line…

Their Kynect program was a nationwide model of making ACA work. Millions of Kentuckians were able to receive healthcare, many for the first time in decades.

And now this. And my sadness is tempered with the knowledge they also voted to make this happen. A majority of them anyway.

    • McSally has to beat this nutcase. Kelly Ward (chemtrail Kelly) in her primary – and also Sheriff Joe. There is a chance two seats may open in Arizona if John McCain does not recover. The leading Democratic candidate, Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema is very well liked in Arizona but she most definitely is a centrist Democrat and will not be liked by the left. There is an article today in Politico on the race. https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2018/01/12/can_democrats_turn_arizona_blue_135996.html

      • Lazycrockett

2018 is going to be fun ride for Az.

      • Blake J Butler

McCain will not make it, Kennedy couldn’t surivive it, he’s also as old as he is, i see him either dying in office, or qutting as a result of spending his last days with his family as he wouldn’t have much time left. Not really sympathetic for him on that, since he had the option to retire, and the guy’s been there since the 80’s and should have hung up the towel a long time ago, but ran because his party’s heads made him run for re-election.

Sinema’s opponent is Deedra Abboud, a further left candidate, if that wasn’t a drawback, she would recieve, like she already hasn’t intense islamaphobia from the right as she practices Islam. Sinema would probably pull it off in a state where a far left candidate couldn’t win anyways because the state is not ready to yet support a candidate like Deedra.

I do not see this working out for the state GOP, they had that cray cray doctor with her bullshit, and Joe with his racism, and the establishment favorite thats’ thrown off to the sides because she will face a fierce competition between bannon, mcconnell, and baby huey.

If there was a chance for a democratic pickup its here in Arizona, and in Nevada.

        • Or two seats in Arizona possibly. If McCain leaves office, the Republican Governor of Arizona appoints a replacement — but the seat will open up in a November special election (like Minnesota). The Latino community is very energized and will turn out in Arizona in November. Also Tennessee is possible, former Governor Phil Bredesen is very popular- and wealthy- and is running for Senate.

        • Ninja0980

If McCain dies before July, there will be two elections…could be two Democratic pickups in that case.

        • Lazycrockett

          He wont quit.

      • Snarky

Maybe Ron Barber (won the special election for Gabby Giffords’ seat after she was shot, but lost his re-election bid to McSally by just 167 votes) will run? AZ-02 went for Clinton over Trump and Tucson is as blue a city as that state has.

      • Ninja0980

The left needs to get the hell over it ASAP.
A Bernie type candidate isn’t going to win Arizona.
You take the Centrist or you go with a Republican.

        • Sinema seems very progressive. Sinema is Co-chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus. I am reading her positions and voting record. Why the hell am I reading leftists do not like her? Take a look. Maybe she is not avidly anti-Israel because Arizona has a large Jewish population? Just a guess. http://www.ontheissues.org/Senate/Kyrsten_Sinema.htm

          • TimCA

I think that Sinema has staked out more center-liberal positions on redistributive tax policies than Sanders supporters might like. Sinema’s political rhetoric has also been more law and order than many on the far left might like as well. I think Sinema is a good fit in practical terms for Arizona and is the most electable Democrat in the race. I hope she’s ultimately Arizona’s next Senator.

          • JCF

He’d been filming in southern Colorado (in the same area I’d been staying in! All the locals had been buzzing about this movie “starring Johnnie Depp and {pause} Armie Hammer” being shot nearby. Looking to cash in!), so when I heard “Armand Hammer” I had a good hunch. *

            * This area of Colorado is more accessible by Albuquerque, than Denver.

          • Lazycrockett

The Lone Ranger gets shit on for Depp playing Tonto, but while the film is rather bloated, its not the train wreck lol the critics made it out to be. There a a great message bout what happens to folks that rape the land for natural resources.

OT: I did get to spend some time at CES today. All in all, it was a pretty neat experience and one I wouldn’t mind repeating – yes, even the walking-for-nearly-four-hours-straight part. I saw some popular YouTube tech personalities there, which was a nice treat.

The two cats had a confrontation earlier tonight, during which – I swear – I heard the older cat hiss or otherwise make a noise signaling aggression. (No swiping or chasing, though, which is a good sign.) She has never hissed in the four years I’ve had her, but the introduction of a new cat may just have unleashed her inner beast. I could just be paranoid, though.

New kitty is coming out of her shell a bit, though still pretty timid. Hopefully she’ll soon be brave enough to venture out of the room for longer than a few seconds at a time.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

Not a cat owner myself but I think that it is best if the new kitty has a safe place the other cat can’t follow her into, at least for a while.

      • Moebym of the Returners

We have been keeping her in one room since she came home and trying to shut the other cat out (she’s terribly curious, as you can imagine).

          Hopefully they become friends.

“Shithole” doesn’t translate easily, it seems.

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/jan/12/trump-shithole-countries-lost-in-translation

Taiwan’s central news agency led the confusion in Asia by translating “shithole countries” as, in phonetics, “niao bu sheng dan de guo jia”, which means, mysteriously, “countries where birds don’t lay eggs”.

    • safari

Evidently a Croatian newspaper used the term “vukojebina” or “place where wolves fuck”.

    • Reality.Bites

A shithole is a pretty universal concept as a latrine, trench, sewer, etc. I know of no human culture (and if there are, please spare me the knowledge) where such a place isn’t considered highly unpleasant. This needn’t be a concept difficult for any country’s media to convey if they wish to.

      • Karl Dubhe 2

The history of the toilet is long and smelly. There are a good number of cultures who have issues with who goes where. The Ancient Romans had communal latrines, IIRC there wasn’t a woman’s side and a man’s side, some of us get bent out of shape if a man goes into the ‘wrong’ single washroom.

I’m in the process of leaving the US right now. I used to feel sad and nostalgic about it, but now I feel nothing. The US doesn’t represent my ideals anymore. I want to live in a diverse, secular meritocracy if possible. Canada has its problems, but they are at least trying to become just that…

These Nazi white Supremacists are behaving like dogs in the manger. There’s nothing preventing them from living a good life and achieving anything they wish…legally or socially, and apparently the only reason that they are so pissed off at the rest of the world is that they aren’t given automatic shortcuts to the Top of the Heap solely because they’re str8, white and male.

TPTBs believe that some of us are more equal than others: i.e. if you’re straight, white and male, just like Dear Leader Dump. Life here is becoming like an Orwell novel. Bye Felicia!

        • medaka

Good for you! I left 29 years ago, and I do not want to go back. Life as an ex-pat in Japan is not without its ups and downs, but national health insurance without Nazis is a good thing.

          • BeaverTales

What a beautiful part of the country. I’m envious. My husband and I are considering retiring on Vancouver Island (Nanoose Bay) in about five years. The only thing holding us back is that we both can work part time at our current jobs in the Windsor area and take several months off in the winter to go somewhere warm. I wish you the absolute best of luck!

          • BeaverTales

Best of luck to you too. All I need to do my job is an internet connection, but I’m also thinking about a part time job working with disabled retirees near Sidney, since I recently became disabled myself. I’m hubbyless…but hoping I can change that someday.

Beware Vancouver Island weather…it rains like crazy, just like in the lower mainland….and though it rarely snows, it’s dark, wet and cold in winter. Summer was dry as a bone…the air was unbreathable from all the wildfires. Housing prices are ridiculous but it’s really very diverse and the natural beauty is as stunning as my home state of Alaska. My mom and oldest friends live in California, so it makes sense to stay on the West Coast for me.

My disability has been the only major hitch to my immigration application, I’ve tried to tell CIC that it will be an advantage because I also do research on tech that benefits the disabled. So far, they seem to like the idea. 🙂
