Kremlin Hackers Seek To Infiltrate US Senate Servers

Politico reports:

The suspected Russian hackers accused of breaching the Democratic National Committee and meddling in France’s presidential election are now targeting the U.S. Senate, according to new research.

Since last June, the hacking group known as “Fancy Bear” has been setting up fake websites mimicking the Senate’s login server, hoping to trick Senate staffers into entering their credentials there, according to findings released Friday by the cybersecurity firm Trend Micro.

The fake websites were designed to look like the login page for the Senate’s email server, which runs on a Windows platform. The real Senate login page is not publicly accessible and can be reached only when users are on an internal Senate network. But Trend Micro researchers said the phishing campaign makes sense as a preparatory step.

Yes. If Trump is ever going to face justice, democrats have to take back the house and senate

      • The_Wretched

        that’s necessary but not sufficient.

        • Todd20036

Agreed. That’s really just a first step

    • Yes, because they’re still operating under the deluded belief that the Kremlin will keep electing them, and not the even crazier traitors who’ll gladly throw all of the old guard into the new gulags.

    • Lazycrockett

Why would they?, they are in on it.

They ARE the Russians!!!!! (essentially) They were bought off by Putin years and years ago.

Now, now, Putin told Trump he didn’t do it, and Trump believes him, so all is well.

  • TexasBoy

I’d like to know why our voting machines aren’t connected to a receipt printer, the voter could look it over to be sure it is accurate, then drop it in a voting box, and then we could use that printout to actually do a manual recount.

    • William

Why use machines? Paper ballots can’t be hacked by Russians in Moscow. They can be recounted.

      • TexasBoy

Here’s another option: Don’t have the machines connected to a server, other than a local, closed server at each location that is not connected to the internet. That could tally the votes and the local precinct judge could CALL IN the votes for the precinct. That would still give us the speed and automation needed to count the votes quickly while severely limiting any possibility of hacking.

        • William

One planted election worker with a flash drive can install software to fix the talley.

        • !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

very much this. ask your dead great grandfather why a voting machine must be hooked up to the internet. why? why??????

      • The_Wretched

Think it was Florida recently, maybe Alabama. The court ordered the paper ballots that the optical scanner read had to be destroyed. State law was that the electronic record in the machines was the ‘official count’.

        • William

Electronic record are bullshit. One voltage spike and they’re toast.

          • Natty Enquirer

One match and paper ballots are ashes. Nothing is foolproof.

          • William

Courthouses tend to have fireproof vaults.

          • Natty Enquirer

Modern circuit design has overvoltage protection.

          • shivadog

We should use both methods for the most secure system possible.

          • how many times has the national level elections been compromised by people messing with paper ballots? that is the only relevant question. sure, you can toss in a few fake hand written ballots to try to change things. but that takes a great deal more coordination and effort than it does to just push a button and “erase” a bunch of dem votes counted on a machine connected to the internet, and/or erase them entirely. the poll workers in this country don’t even know what we’re talking about. trust me, i’ve asked a lot of them. “what does hacking mean? no, we’re not worried about whatever that is.”

      • New Mexico’s paper ballot + optical scanner machines are considered to be among the best available. Not only is there a paper record of every vote cast, upon feeding your ballot into the machine you will learn right then and there if you messed it up and can have a chance at doing it over.

        • The_Wretched

          MN is the same system.

          • Librarykid

            MD, too!

          • JCF

            And California.

    • jerry

It depends on which state…ours have a printout that you can look over as you’re voting (ES&S machines, I think), and review before you cast the vote. Those rolls can be recounted, too. And the machines have no internet connection.

  • ranty McRant to follow, feel free to skim on by.

so, like, there was this time when i talked with the guy who was #1 aide in the Kerry campaign. he was a black guy from an elite school and because i have a @uchicago email addy, he responded to me, quickly. i was all like, dood. what is wrong with you people? you didn’t even want to look into it. he sheepishly said that he, and Kerry, had no idea that voting might be compromised. i strongly encouraged him to look into it, and to tell Kerry to do the same. i can be nice and polite when i have to.

similarly, a trans lover of mine (who was in FL working for the campaign) did the same thing with the Gore people, when that mess was going down. chads, brooks brothers rioters… are we seeing a pattern here? s/he told me that s/he spoke with Gore himself, and his attitude was, “well, let’s just let it go. well take them out next time. riiiiight.

the national level dems are one of two things. idiots, or complicit. or maybe door number three: being blackmailed by the russians and gawd knows who else. the chinese maybe. i don’t know.

the bottom line is that unless and until the national level dems take this issue seriously, we are all Fucked. they are such cowards. it really pisses me off. all they seem to care about is that a requisite number of safe-district rich dems get re-elected, and everything else doesn’t matter. i’m not a Green (also compromised by russians) but i am an independent for this reason. i worked for the party for more than half of my life (dems) and i know what the problem is. the leadership is too white, too rich, and too self-absorbed. even the Bama is guilty of this, and don’t think i don’t know it. i am a UC grad from that time and i did meet that family.

Michelle Obama may be our only hope, Obi Wan. and i hate dynasties.

    • The_Wretched

It’s party policy (and entirely unfathomable).

      Here’s a very recent example:
Democrat Shelly Simonds in Virginia did the ‘roll over’ and not try too hard on her ‘loss’ as well. In forgoing a fight, she said it was more important that her district had someone in the seat. This is utter garbage from a politics perspective. +/- a few weeks has zero impact on a newly seated district at the State level.

    • greenmanTN

Dems as a whole are Nutless Wonders, and I say that with respect to women, in which case they are Ovaryless Wonders. Say what you will about Al Franken, but he was a strong voice and he was taken down by accusations, not evidence,

      • Highmoremotel

        I thought he confessed.

        • greenmanTN

No, he didn’t. He said he viewed the events as either untrue or from a different perspective, but given the current atmosphere, felt he should resign instead of waiting for a congressional investigation, which he asked for from day one.

          • The_Wretched

The Senate Dems demanding his head was an informal ‘no-confidence’ vote. The party leaders pretended they would hold Trump accountable as well given their pure standing on a high horse. That part didn’t happen.

Obviously it is not in the interests of the current administration to stop Putin’s web inroads.

  • Gianni

Why not? Putin’s plan worked during the presidential election. What’s the harm in trying to compromise the Congress? Trump hasn’t made a single move to push to stop this interference and why should he? He knows damned well that Putin and his government helped him become President. He really has no option but to continue denying any interference by the Russian government and remain snuggled up with Pooty. If the Russian interference efforts can get Republicans elected, why should Donnie interfere?

    • Halou

If anything Trump has been inviting Russia to continue it’s attacks. The ongoing spate of diplomatic incidents and insults sent to American allies, Trump has ensured that America’s international presence is small and it’s allies in doubt. With every backward step America has made under his tenure Russia has stepped forward.

      • Gianni

And Pooty is delighted. Trump isn’t remotely interested in pushing for anything that will enhance national cyber security. That alone should border on treason; too bad it doesn’t.

  • Halou

    What countermeasures are being taken?

Oh, right. This is the Trump regime we’re talking about, if anything they’ll call the Kremlin through Jared’s hotline in the Russian embassy to apologise for not making it easier.
