LIVE VIDEO: Senate Swears In Two New Democrats

Talking Points Memo reports:

Former Vice President Joe Biden will escort Sen.-elect Doug Jones (D-AL) to his swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday morning, according to CNN and local reports from Alabama. While the state colleague typically accompanies a new senator to the swearing-in ceremony, Jones did not ask Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) to attend, AL.com and WAAY TV reported Tuesday evening. Jones’ ceremony is scheduled for noon on Wednesday and he plans to do his swearing-in on a personal family Bible, according to AL.com.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports:

Tina Smith, who served three years as Minnesota’s lieutenant governor and worked behind the scenes as an influential DFLer for years before that, will join the U.S. Senate on Wednesday. Smith’s rapid elevation to the Senate follows the resignation of former Sen. Al Franken, who stepped down a day earlier following sexual harassment allegations. Smith, 59, will become Minnesota’s junior senator alongside Sen. Amy Klobuchar, also a DFLer. That will make Minnesota just the fourth state to currently have two women as U.S. senators.

Smith will become the 22nd female sitting member of the Senate, a new record. The balance in the Senate will narrow slightly today to 51-49.

  • Lazycrockett

You know Biden should stay away from these things with his past conduct.

    • safari

      Oh, Sassy

      • Rex

I heard Sassy voted for Jones.

        • Harveyrabbit

          Twice. (Shhh)

        • Lumpy Gaga

He WAS a dark horse candidate.

Now I want to sit down with a drink and watch one of my favorite movies….

  • narutomania

Hmm. While it was great that Biden escorted him to the ceremony, I think that he should have invited Shelby to the ceremony. It would have been the right thing to do both socially and politically.

    • Bluto

I say give the repubs the same respect they give to dems. In other words, none.

  • Gustav2

Doug Jones hires Senate Democrats’ only African-American chief of staff

    http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/doug-jones-hires-senate-democrats-african-american-chief/story?id=52109446

    • gaycuckhubby

Fuck yeah! That’s great news, the chief of staff is arguably more influential and important than the senators themselves. They do the hard work, the senator takes the credit and the blame.
Also a sign that Doug Jones knows who put him in the Senate.

  • David Walker

As Rachel said last night after talking about Smith and Jones, “And those are not aliases.”

  • another_steve

All indications are that after this November’s elections, there’ll be lots of new Democrats being sworn into Congress. 🙂

    • Tawreos

And lots of swearing from the White House.

    • Ninja0980

      My rep is screwed.

      • Tawreos

I hope mine is, but the gerrymander will keep him safe.

      • another_steve

Here in Maryland, both of our U.S. senators are Democrats and of our eight federal House representatives, only one is a Republican.

We need to get that one fucker out of the House.

        • Ninja0980

Not likely to happen given the fact his district is gerrymandered.

    • JAKvirginia

Yes, if Ds can get off their asses to vote.

      • Jean-Marc in Canada
        • Gustav2

          And grow the fuck up!

          • JAKvirginia

            Yup, too.

        • JAKvirginia

          Yup.

      • The_Wretched

Yelling and shaming at them will not get them to the polls. All it does it make you feel good for engaging in social punishment.

        • JAKvirginia

Neither did common sense and reasoning get them there. Now I’ll boot them in their purist asses. You can hold their hands and soothe their hurt fee-fees later. Stop enabling spoiled brats who are just as self-obsessed and selfish as tRump’s base!

          And your concern-trolling grows tiresome.

          • The_Wretched

Politicis 101 is not concern-trolling. Beating a dead horse with arguments that the Russian troll bots propagate is not helping.

          • JAKvirginia

Thanks for a reply that says and means nothing. The veiled insult of spreading Russian bots tripe was a nice touch though.

          • The_Wretched

            It wasn’t veiled.

          • JAKvirginia

Which proves you know nothing about which you speak. Go bother someone else. I’m done with you.

    • JCF
  • Tawreos

Has Moore admitted he lost yet?

  • Xaca

Why do they use a fucking bible? Shouldn’t it be the fucking U.S. fucking Constitution?

    Fuck these god-besotted-shit-encrusted x-tianists.

    • DaddyRay

I like that – they should be swearing to protect and defend the constitution

    • Gustav2

A Demon-crat from Alabama better use a bibble.

      • Bambino

Yes. It’s a worse sin than raping a child in that state.

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

      Isn’t optional ? Bible, Quran… Humpty Dumtpy ??

      • Gustav2

An original script from ‘The Wizard of Oz’

    • Treant

The Bible is not required. You can swear in on whatever you wish, including a copy of the Constitution. And many do.

      • Bambino

I would google some fine recipes and swear on them.

      • Prost Seattle

        Honcho?

      • Rambie

Oh Treant, my mind went on a flight of fancy on the thought of swearing on whatever I wish.

        • Treant

My religion requires that I handle a pair of muscular pecs while swearing in.

          • Rambie

            Mine too! 🙂

    • JAKvirginia

Fucking Bible?!! There is one? Like the Kama Sutra or better? Asking for a friend.

    • KenDC

      The oath:
I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.

      • JAKvirginia

I love the last line. I hold that against fake Christians when they do anything unconstitutional. But you swore to God!

      • William

Is the “so help me God” officially part of the oath? Supposedly George Washington said it after being sworn in as president, and it became traditional but not required. At least for presidential oaths.

      • The_Wretched

The ‘so help me god” is not required.

      • Craig Howell

That last line is completely optional.

    • Tom Furgas

Xaca, don’t hold back! Tell us how you REALLY feel! ;^)

    • Harveyrabbit

I think it would mean more if they swore over a picture of their kids or parents or a loved one.

    • Publius

      It’s whatever.

Doug Jones, like most Americans, is a Christian. Swearing in with a Bible doesn’t make him a Christianist any more than it makes him Jewish.

      • The_Wretched

        Argument from popularity.

        • Publius

Not really. If you swear in using a Bible, are you then a Christianist? Is Barack Obama a Christianist? Elizabeth Warren? Is Keith Ellison an Islamist for swearing in using the Koran?

No, the argument is silly. It’s one thing to say, “Only the Constitution should be used,” but it’s another to suggest using a religious text makes the person swearing in a fanatic.

          • The_Wretched

“most americans are christian” (therefor bible swears are totes cool) is an argument from popularity.

The point about swearing on bibles is that we have secular government so ‘holy oaths’ are a bit out of place. Your nth degree framing is nonsense.

          • Publius

I was replying directly to the conclusions of the OP, which suggest that this practice is Christianist. Is Barack Obama a Christianist for swearing in on a Bible?

Once again, it’s one thing to make the argument you are — which is in favor of a more secular practice — but it’s another, and more shaky argument to say that using Bibles makes you a Christianist. If this is what you believe, then say so.

          • The_Wretched

“which suggest that this practice is Christianist”

Yeah, that’d be reading into it something that’s not there.

          • Publius

You’re not answering because you know I’m right. Swearing in with a Bible doesn’t make anyone a Christianist. You know that, and I know that.

            But muh argument from popularity…

          • The_Wretched

and you wonder why I think you’re a troll.

Your second sentence undercuts your first. reading is fundamental. Really, you show substantial deficiencies in reading comprehension. Else, you’re intentionally screwing up so you can spout your right-wing troll points. Either way.

          • Publius

You’re the only one here who does this. You’re the only one on JMG who follows me around and antagonizes me with these assumptions of bad faith. You’re not onto something nobody else is — you’re just a bully, and you’re unable to defend your arguments so you resort to these accusations.

I have different opinions than you and, in some cases, most people here. But I try to defend them thoughtfully. Sometimes I do a good job and sometimes I don’t, but either way I don’t assume the worst in others simply because we don’t see eye to eye. I don’t know why you do this, but you’re not helping yourself and you’re definitely not doing a good job defending your opinions.

          • The_Wretched

Sure and now the adhom. And yes, even if your heart of hearts is pure as the driven snow, you carry out an agenda as black as the most intentional troll. As I have no means to access your mind, I’m happy to rely on your posts.

          • Publius

Yes, my black agenda includes resisting the idea that Doug Jones is a Chrisitanist because he used a Bible. You’re delirious.

Stop being so fucking negative. Again, everyone else manages to put on their big kid pants and accept differing opinions here. Then there’s you.

          • The_Wretched

Again, no i won’t ‘yes daddy’ you.

And your first sentence is you doubling down on putting words in OPs mouth.

    • Secure

He’s from Alabama. Land of the Bible-thumpers. He wants to be reelected. ‪

  • gaycuckhubby

Yay!!! Women will be the face of the revolution

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

And men of good conscience will stand with them.

      • JAKvirginia

        THIS!!

  • liondon#iamnotatraitor

Ol’ Roy Moore will be watching from the Disney store at the local mall.

    • Treant

He’ll move over to the Spencer’s. “I used to be something, Hayley. I was almost a Senator. When’s your mom picking you up, again?”

      • “Fuck” said piglet

        want to go to Build-a-Bear?

  • Treant

Now that he’s a Senator and McConnell can’t pull further dipshittery to avoid seating him, I can say it.

    Jones has a fivehead.

    • Tawreos

But it balances out the chins

    • KnownDonorDad

Thankfully, we got fivehead and not pedophilehead.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

    You got screwed, Al

  • Ninja0980

I still think Franken got screwed over.

    • Lazycrockett

I really think that if he wants to he can run again in the near future.

      • Ninja0980

        Yup.
And hopefully by that time people will be willing to call out red flags instead of saying every accusation must be believed without question.

    • DaddyRay

I hope the Dems take care of him and find him a spot in the DNC or something that will leverage his talents and voice

      • The_Wretched

He’s an open liberal. They will not look after him.

He’s good enough to look after himself as well.

    • HZ81

Sadly, there will be no thorough investigation of the allegations against him. A jillion right-wing smears since Karl Rove crawled out from under the pile of horse shit that gave birth to him have come and gone, and the left still can’t see them coming.

      • penpal

The left are the biggest self-destructive group of scolding ninnies that have ever enabled the right. When will we learn that the right only gives a fuck about our ethics, not theirs?

        • HZ81

          Amen.

    • William

      Totally.

    • stanhope

      This was strategic

  • BlackGayVeganAtheist

If using the Bible makes the people of their respective states happy then DO IT…but as long as these people uphold the laws of the land

  • Tomcat

And now we will find out if we just got another Democrat Senator or a republican.

    • “Fuck” said piglet

      they are REGISTERED Democrats……..
just because they vote with all the Republithug bills……………….
does NOT make them NOT Democrats.

      • The_Wretched

I’m much more interested in substance over label. That said, the label is determination of who controls the votes that come to the floor and the committee chairs. That matters even if some of the office holders are DINO.

    • andrew

Doug Jones is a real Democrat from a Red State. It is unrealistic to expect him to always vote in lock step with senators from deep Blue States. In order to survive Republican election challenges he will like senators Manchin of WVa, Heidi Heitkampf of ND, Claire McCaskill of MO, Joe Donnelly of Ind and Jon Tester of Montana, occasionally vote differently than the senators from more liberal states. Like all of them his vote will be to elect a Democrat majority leader, gain control of the Senate, it’s calendar and all the Chairperson Senate positions as well as guaranteeing that the Democrats have a majority of the seats on every Committee.

  • Ninja0980

Btw folks, chances are Jones is going to be another Joe Manchin.
He’ll still be better then any Republican in that seat.

    • GlennF

I hope you’re wrong and Jones turns out to be a progressive Senator. We progressive Democrats are going to need all the help we can get in the coming year fighting the corrupt rethuglicans and those Dems who want to compromise with them

We all saw during the Obama years what attempted compromise with rethuglicans got us: almost complete rethuglican takeover of every level of government.

      • Taylor Bixler

But next time…all that compromising will work. Ignore the previous 1000 times it didn’t. Next time. It will. For sure. It’s gotta. Right?

    • The_Wretched

I’ve yet to see any evidence that we must have Manchin-alikes vs principled liberals for these tough races.

      • Rambie

They’ve got to win an election from their district voters. I’m fine with Democrats who are conservative leaning over any Republican.

        • The_Wretched

I’ve yet to see any evidence that we must have Manchin-alikes vs principled liberals for elections from district voters.

Maybe they need to bend way the hell over for the money people of their jurisdictions but I’ve not seen evidence of that either.

          • Rambie

I’m not saying we need to accept spinelessness or flakes who don’t stand up to their convictions. But on some issues if I don’t agree with a Democrat that’s fine if we agree on the whole.

Example, in the case of Senator Jones. I highly doubt a full pro-choice candidate who’d advocate for repealing late-term abortion restrictions would get elected. However, his stated position (below) I’m comfortable with as it’s stating he wants to maintain the woman’s right to choose.

“Jones said. ‘To be clear, I fully support a woman’s freedom to choose to what happens to her own body. That is an intensely, intensely personal decision that only she, in consultation with her god, her doctor, her partner or family, that’s her choice.

‘Having said that, the law for decades has been that late-term procedures are generally restricted except in the case of medical necessity. That’s what I support. I don’t see any changes in that. It is a personal decision.” http://www.al.com/news/huntsville/index.ssf/2017/11/doug_jones_speaks_on_abortion.html

    • JCF

Do you want Schumer for Majority Leader? Or are you happy w/ Turtle Man? That question is the MINIMUM difference between Jones, and any Rethug.

  • JWC

Hehe and Expect it to be “Crashed by Roy Moore

  • stanhope

I hope he runs again..using the right’s logic, if he is elected with all facts known, he should be seated. If msnbc has the sense God gave a grape, they’d given him his own shown and put chris matthews out to pasture with aunt clara’s doorknobs

  • Secure

Mondale escorting Smith. Awh. That’s pretty cool.

  • JCF
  • Daveinmpls1
