Florida Sees First Snow In Decades [VIDEO]

The Associated Press reports:

A brutal winter storm dumped snow in Tallahassee, Florida, on Wednesday for the first time in nearly three decades before slogging up the Atlantic coast and smacking Southern cities such as Savannah and Charleston, South Carolina, with a rare blast of snow and ice.

Forecasters warned that the same system could soon strengthen into a “bomb cyclone” as it rolls up the East Coast, bringing hurricane-force winds, coastal flooding and up to a foot of snow. At least 16 deaths were blamed on dangerously cold temperatures that for days have gripped wide swaths of the U.S. from Texas to New England.

A winter storm warning extended from the Gulf Coast of Florida’s “Big Bend” region all the way up the Atlantic coast. Forecasters said hurricane-force winds blowing offshore on Thursday could generate 24-foot (7-meter) seas.

Schools in the Southeast called off classes just months after being shut down because of hurricane threats, and police urged drivers to stay off the roads in a region little accustomed to the kind of winter woes common to the Northeast.

And they are expecting 6-12 inches of snow from Atlantic City, Long Island, Boston and Portland, ME tonight…but Trump says there is no climate change.

    • another_steve

Global warming deniers don’t understand that the warming effect intensifies all weather phenomena, including the snowy and frigid ones.

Our (illegitimate) President is a global warming denier.

      We’re fucked.

      • bkmn

Which is why I rarely use the term ‘global warming’ because ‘climate change’ is a much better term to use.

        • another_steve

No. “Climate change” sounds much too benign. Does not move people to action.

“Everything “changes.” Why should I be concerned?”

    • Librarykid

Something is growing. DC’s forecast went from this morning’s calling for a dusting to an inch of snow to now calling for 1-3 inches of snow.

      • Lumpy Gaga

Local gay-ass weatherman said that earlier projections of storm path moved a little westward. Philly went from a clear forecast to maybe 1-3 inches.

“Bomb cyclone”? What is it with forecasters in the East that they feel the need to make up these colorful, strange, and over-the-top names and descriptions for storms?

    • boobert

They keep coming up with new names for storms. Derecho was the one that tore up everything around here a few years back.

      • Karl Dubhe 2

        First used in 1888. Derecho.

        According to wiki anyhow…

        • boobert

I’m a weather nut and have never heard it used before.

        • Librarykid

I heard Doug Hill, a Channel 9 weatherman in Washington, DC use the term “Bombogenesis” to describe what was happening during a ferocious snow storm we were having one year in the 1980s when it was snowing at a rate of 2 inches an hour. He described it as a super rapid dropping of pressure in the storm, intensifying it rapidly and deeply.

While most of the lower 48 states continue to endure a hideous deep freeze, Alaska has had an unusually warm start to winter.

In fact, several locations in northern and central Alaska — such as
Utqiaġvik (Barrow), Bettles, Kotzebue and McGrath — all had their
warmest December on record, according to climatologist Brian

    Meanwhile, from NY Post:

“President Trump will nominate a law partner of former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani as Manhattan’s next top federal prosecutor,The Post has learned. Geoffrey Berman was appointed Wednesday afternoon as interim US attorney for the Southern District of New York by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the Justice Department announced.

Trump will ask the US Senate to confirm Berman within the next 120 days, according to a source familiar with the process. Berman would fill the seat formerly held by Preet Bharara, who Trump fired in March, along with 45 other US attorneys.

Berman is a partner in the law firm of Greenberg Traurig, where Giuliani is also a partner and serves as chairman of its Cybersecurity, Privacy and Crisis Management Practice. A Stanford-trained lawyer, Berman was a Manhattan federal prosecutor from 1990 to 1994, after previously serving three years as an associate under Independent Counsel Lawrence Walsh during the Iran/Contra scandal.

They begged her to let them go out and play in it. She told them it was OK, but first they had to dress appropriately. They ran to their bedroom and came back wearing swimsuits.

I was in Memphis as a child and it snowed for the first time in decades. The closed everything for a dusting of snow and kids were using cookie sheets to scrape up the snow off of laws to put it in plastic bags to save in the freezer. I’d lived in Ohio the year prior and thought they’d collectively gone nuts.

And they tried to use the cookie sheets as sleds on the road down the hill…

Chuck Todd is trying to make Citizen Drump sympathetic cause he won.

    • billbear1961

Jesus, what an evil goddamned WHORE Todd is!

    • Tread

Weren’t there rumors that Chuck Todd was going to be one of the next high-profile newscasters to go down to sexual harassment charges?

      • Lazycrockett

        It wouldnt surprise me.

      • billbear1961

        I hope he goes down!

A “journalist” who says his chief task is not to find and defend the TRUTH!!

    • billbear1961

A proven pathological liar, a thief, a hatemonger, a predator, a TRAITOR who shits all over the rule of law–and Todd finds him sympathetic!

He’s making out like a bandit with this tax cut PILLAGE!! Where are the relentless calls from the public or the press or the Democratic party for his TAX RETURNS?!

The elections are NOT secure!! Voter registration rolls can be easily hacked! Where is the outrage from the public, the press, or the DNC?!

Al Franken has resigned before an ethics committee could look at his case! Where are the calls from ANYONE, especially from the Democrats who demanded Franken’s immediate resignation, for Trump’s accusers to be heard again and taken seriously? Why are the words PREDATOR, THIEF, LIAR, and HATEMONGER not uttered in connection with that would-be DICTATOR’S name every time the demented bastard is mentioned, by Democrats and by SERIOUS members of the “press”??

The Democrats are GUTLESS, and the CORPORATE press are a DISGRACE!!

OT: Didn’t know Nunez’ deadline was today.

“According to a request from House Intelligence Chairman Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), Wednesday marks the final day for the Department of Justice and the FBI to turn over documents related to the investigation—including sensitive information regarding the infamous Trump-Russia dossier. ABC reports Nunes’ request was the bases for Rosenstein’s meeting.”

In 1997, it was my first “winter” in DC, after 10 years in Chicago. The radio said, one night, “Possibility of snow flurries’ in the morning.
That morning, they were still predicting, “Possibility of snow flurries”. They then began announcing the school closings!!!
By noon, not a snow flurry was seen, and the began to RE-OPEN the schools in DC!!!
Over the next 10 years, DC began to have annual accumulations of snow. From an inch to 3-4 inches as a time. Before I left DC, in 2007 there were 2 snowfalls 3 days apart, with EACH ONE dropping @ 18 -20 inches of snow!!! So from “possibility of snow flurries” we went to 36-40 inches of snow!!!

My sister in Bozeman, Montana called, and it’s warmer there than where I am in Florida.

It’s a balmy 54 degrees F on the front porch today. The forecast is to remain steady at 50+ F until next Wednesday when it will shoot up to 59-60 degrees F. It’s sunny. No wind. Grassy stuff is spring green. Crocus are beginning to shoot up. We usually get a false spring for two weeks in February and then it gets real cold until mid April. Trouble is, we need water. We need lots of snow. Where is the snow? Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow . . . . please!

    • Oscarlating Wildely

Um, inquiring minds have to ask: where are you?

You’d think that the eastern seaboard is awaiting yeti ice dragons with ice blue eyes the way people some people around here are acting. (Note: we make fun of them.)

      • Lars Littlefield

I’m in the far south east corner of Utah. San Juan County. Lots of dramatic outcroppings of rugged red rocks, variable weather, many Navajos, Moab is 40 miles to the north (where it is currently freezing).

    • Silver Badger

We are singing the same song in Denver. Moisture! Please, we need moisture!

  • Paula Key

This can’t be the fault of the LGBTI community – maybe God is blaming Americans for voting for Trump. lOL

    • Oscarlating Wildely

Duh! It’s Obama’s fault. Because of Michelle’s arms. And Sasha’s grade school’s cafe worker, whose hair is dry and unmanageable.

  • kareemachan

Look, I *know* you people have no practice driving in icy/snowy weather, but that doesn’t mean you can floor it as usual.

  • billbear1961

So, the country freezes while the White House implodes; and, about the latter, the “news” media PRETEND Trump and the GOP aren’t engaged in a COUP against this democracy!!

    • johncAtl

Technically the US is a republic which means we have a government based on laws and not majority rule. Unfortunately there are no Republicans in Congress willing to enforce those laws.

  • 2guysnamedjoe

    Yesterday it snowed in Tennessee
I heard it also snowed in Tallahassee
But not a flake fell on little old me
    Cause I’m in shoo-shoo-shoo, shoo-shoo-shoo
    Shoo-shoo, shoo-shoo, shoo-shoo Sugar Town

The Weather Channel says there’s a “bombogenesis” headed your way. I don’t know what that is but I recommend you stock up on tequila.

Winter Storm Grayson will undergo bombogenesis off the Eastern Seaboard into Thursday, becoming an intense ocean low producing heavy snow, blizzard conditions, damaging winds and coastal flooding in New England.

With the agave nectar. Perfect with fresh squeezed grapefruit, lemon and lime!
We were both bed ridden for a few days. Felt like a million, but only a few showed up.
Able to go out to forage and gather today, now I’m down with a relapse. HisGoodSelf is back to hijinks. How’s ATL doin’?

        • johncAtl

Cold, but the ugly stuff is missing us. I find that wine warms me up.

OT a little but will this mess with the Florida citrus crop? 🙁 I think I know the answer. Crap! I can’t eat grapefruits anymore (I take meds that dont get along with grapefruit) so I switched to and do dearly love navel oranges. Any orange actually. So far my blood sugar is AOK. This getting old(er) sucks.

    • Spray on abs

I think the hurricanes did a number on the citrus crops. This freeze is only going to make it worse.

      • KevInPDX

I did a detail March through November in Austin. State wide (TX) responsibilities and I ran into several folks down on the coast while working (technically after work drinking beer) that said the hurricanes messed with FL citrus way more than TX and their grapefruits. Crap! Expensive oranges for 2018!
