Hoda Kotb Named As Matt Lauer’s Replacement

NBC News reports:

Hoda Kotb was named co-anchor of “Today” on Tuesday morning and officially headlined the broadcast with Savannah Guthrie.

Kotb, 53, had been behind the anchor desk of NBC’s morning news show in a temporary role since Matt Lauer was fired in November. Lauer’s dismissal came after a female colleague made a complaint accusing him of inappropriate sexual behavior.

In announcing Kotb’s appointment on “Today,” Guthrie, 46, told viewers: “This has to be the most popular decision that NBC News has ever made.”

  • Mark Née Fuzz

Who will be Kathie Lee’s new day drinking buddy?

    • safari

      What’s Megyn up to?

      • Gustav2

She is already in the gutter,

    • Dot Beech

Kelly Ripa would gladly run from Ryan Seacrest.

    • Anastasia Beaverhousen

Well, I am free most mornings. As long as they hire Smitty to make the Bloody Marys.

      • TuuxKabin

        Ever do Bloody Marias, Anastasia?

        • Anastasia Beaverhousen

No, but I am willing to try…. except that one time in college.

          • TuuxKabin

Just switch the vodka with tekillya, or add equal portions.

        • safari

Starting the day off with tequila seems like a bad idea.

          • TuuxKabin

            Says who.

      • Uncle Mark

I would actually watch that show…especially when Karen starts questioning Kathy Lee’s fashion and hair choices, until it’s just “The Karen Walker Drinking Hour”

        • Honey, she’s a New Orleanian. She’s keeping the fourth hour with Kathie Lee and her wine!

    • seant426

      Luann de Lesseps.

  • KnownDonorDad

In the interest of preserving my sanity, I haven’t ventured into the manosphere to observe their reactions, but they must be losing their collective crap over sexual harassment fallout.

  • Aw, I was hoping it would be me.

Still, this seems like a good way forward. I think. I haven’t watched the Today show in a while.

    • shellback

You would have been my first choice.

  • PickyPecker

Nope. I find Hoda vapid and unwatchable. Today show just keeps getting worse and worse.

    • safari

Is there a good morning show?

      I try to avoid morning.

      • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

Listen to Stephanie Miller on Sirius.

      • NPR’s Morning Edition.

      • whollyfool

        Podcasts are my morning shows.

    • Gustav2

but…but…remember Kathy Lee is the one who makes her drink wine in the morning. Hoda may be sober earlier in the day without her.

    • Treant

Yeah, I’d head for Good Morning America, but it’s almost as bad.

I guess I just watch Investigation Discovery in the mornings. It’s not like any of the morning shows actually present much news between their “The New Super-Fruit!” and “Super Weight Loss Foods!” segments anyway.

    • Tawreos

You should watch Fox and play guess the trigger. The object is to see if you can figure out what will send Twittler off the deep end today.

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

I don’t watch morning shows but good. I wish network execs understood that no dude is irreplacable to the point that they tolerate anything like the kind of crap Matt Lauer and Bill O were doing. I think Matt Lauer was making Bill O level money, too. And if anything, after Matt got bounced, ratings went UP.

  • TuuxKabin

Some kind of anagram is she?

    • Anastasia Beaverhousen

“Talk like Hoda, you do? No, No, she is much too old to start the training.”

    • Bad hot. Ok?

      • TuuxKabin

        I’d rather you be the replacement, then I’d watch . . . if I had t.v., so, I dunno.

    • Tawreos

I wasn’t sure if it was her name or a bad scrabble hand

      • TuuxKabin

Yeah, one letter too many, but sometimes we play with nine tiles.

    • She’s Egyptian-American, and a New Orleanian. For over a decade, Hoda was, and still is a much beloved broadcaster here. We in the Crescent City are thrilled for her!!!

    • KenDC

Her name is Egyptian, just like her. Your comment could be perceived as racist.

  • Dot Beech

No man at the desk anchoring things. The women on camera are not expressly or implicitly supporting players to the man. And Kotb didn’t put on a grey tweed jacket to do it. There she is in a hot pink sleeveless dress. It is a big change.

  • DaddyRay

I am glad Lauer has just disappeared. I was on an American flight over the holidays and they did a promo for in flight TV and still had Matt Lauer in the promo piece

  • Treant

“Plus,” NBC noted, “There’s only a 2% chance max that she’s felt up a woman!”

    • DaddyRay

And thanks to Trump rolling back Obama era policies, NBC can pay her less

  • KenDC

My husband knew Hoda’s mother; they worked together for many years. My husband says you won’t find a nicer person anywhere.

    • TuuxKabin

      Who’s looking?

    • I wholeheartedly concur!

    • ArchiLaw

Hoda was one year behind me in high school. He was sweet and friendly. Congratulations, Hoda!

  • Mike

It’s just sad that a thing like The Toady Show, a junky entertainment program with segments on cooking and gossip and other supermarket magazine-type crap, and which also has a news segment, is thought of as news shows, and the actors who host it are “anchors.” It’s no wonder our political system is a freak show, when “The News” that publicizes it is a freak show itself.

    • shellback

      “The Toady Show” ?

      • TuuxKabin

        The Toady Show.

  • safari
    • DaddyRay

      Thanks Obama

    • netxtown

yes, just his pic on a boarding pass will deter anyone from getting on the plane….

    • safari

He must have been given a legal update. Or he’s constipated. Really it is hard to tell.

    • Chris H.

      Is.There.Anything(positive).This.Asshole.Doesn’t.Take Credit.For!!!!
He really is deranged or narcissistic to the hundredth power.

    • Treant

Dumpy’s next Twat continued, “Proves no need for regulations, too expensive! I’ll make Congress repeal them!”

    • M Jackson

      Embarrassing.

    • Karl Dubhe 2

      President Pavel Chekov?

      Seriously…

    • RaygunsGoZap

Someone immediately tweeted back that the US has had no airplane crashes since 2009

      • Lars Littlefield

Was that the year when Scully landed in the Hudson?

    • Nowhereman

How is eliminating regulations being strict on anything? All he has done is to make it easier for businesses to screw us over. Violent crime is down in Chicago, too, but you’ll never hear him mention that…
Also, I’m in Alaska and I can’t imagine us making it a whole year without any commercial aviation deaths.

  • Silver Badger

This article must have more meaning to those who watch broadcast or cable TV. While I do watch Netflix, I haven’t “tuned in” to TV for years.

  • netxtown

    Never watched it. Never will.
I’m over the chatty ken or kathy ‘entertainment’. FFS – shut up already.

  • DaddyRay

I am glad they went with two female hosts – I was wondering if they were going to swap in another male host just to maintain status quo

    • Xaca

      Anderson Cooper turned them down.

  • Best decision ever by NBC News!!! We here in New Orleans are THRILLED to see our beloved Hoda Kotb take on this position. Could not have happened to a nicer, or more professional broadcaster!

    • TuuxKabin

      ‘tay.

  • Todd

I’m not sure what a Hoda Kotb is, let alone how to pronounce it. Isn’t it the name of the sword they put the meat on in Brazilian steakhouses?

  • Frostbite

    What is a “Hoda?”

    • Macbill

It’s a contraction for “hold it”, as in ,”Hoda hoda hoda hoda….”

  • Reality.Bites

Remaining questions: Who, if anyone, will join Kathy Lee on her segment now that Hoda is leaving, and what will happen with the disastrous Megan Kelly Today segment?

I don’t watch any of them, but I’m interested in it from an industry point of view.

  • Xaca

Last time I watched that show was September 11, 2001.

  • Reality.Bites
  • Leo

I don’t really watch morning shows except for CBS on occasion as it seems the sanest. Hoda’s a great person and journalist though, good for her.

Sidebar, I can’t STAND Savannah Guthrie and never understood the hype. That alone cancels this out for me.

    • David in Tucson

I’m not much for morning TV shows, but as a native Tucsonan, I’m glad for Savannah Guthrie’s success (she’s another native Tucsonan).

  • JWC

Can Trump even pronounce her name?

    • TCinBerkeley

He is in the can pushing out “new legislation” after his morning Tweeting binge, so he won’t see this.

  • Gayer Than Thou

What? Two women in charge of something? What will they think of next?

  • Lars Littlefield

Kathie Lee is pissed. She needs to find a new gal pal to play “we’re not lesbians” with. /s

  • Lars Littlefield

The should have brought back J. Fred Muggs. He’s still alive. And he could use a job.

  • TheManicMechanic

Is that a real name, or a Star Wars name? So hard to tell these days.

So far the funniest meme on “What Is Your Star Wars Name” is to put a space in your favorite past dish. Carbo Nara and Spag Hetti come instantly to mind. I saw a thread that had some real good examples.

    • SoCalGal20

      Egyptian.

  • At least it’s not Kathy Lee Gifford. I’d rather be waterboarded than watch that nutjob squawk on tv.
