The Last Jedi Hits $1B In Grosses, #1 For 2017

Variety reports:

Disney-Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” has cleared the $1 billion milestone in worldwide grosses in less than three weeks. “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” pulled in $120.4 million globally on the New Year’s Eve weekend with $52.4 million at 4,232 domestic venues and $68 million internationally during the Friday-Sunday period.

“The Last Jedi” is now the eighth highest-grossing domestic movie of all time with $517.1 million — only $15 million behind last year’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” in the seventh spot. On the worldwide chart, it’s now 24th with $1.04 billion, edging Universal-Illumination’s “Despicable Me 3.” The tentpole’s international total, currently at $523.2 million, will see a significant jolt when it opens on Jan. 5 in China, its final market.

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” has also topped Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” which grossed $504 million in North America, for the top spot among 2017 releases domestically. It’s the fourth 2017 title to go past $1 billion worldwide, along with “Beauty and the Beast” at $1.26 billion, “The Fate of the Furious” at $1.24 billion and “Despicable Me 3” at $1.03 billion.

  • Buford

    ‘The Last Jedi’ was great!

    • Tread

The one scene is worth the price of admission alone. Just jaw dropping.

      • AJA

Are you talking about the scene that featured 10 seconds of silence (trying not to give too much away)? Because if so, My jaw literally dropped.

        • Tread

Yes. That scene. The entire theater went silent and then someone yelled “Holy shit!”

          • EdmondWherever

Did it have anything to do with Leia, um…. stepping outside for a few minutes? That might be my favorite scene in the flim.

        • JCF

Did you hear that some theaters posted a Warning Notice about that scene? [Apparently some people had thought is was a technical malfunction. Cray.]

        • Todd20036

Saw the movie, not sure what scene you are talking about.

But I LOVED the movie. Plus I saw it during the day during the week – I was about one of 5 people there.

          • AJA

Really trying not to give too much away, but it was the last scene that Laura Dern was in.

          • John30013

I saw it with my “adopted” gay son on NYE, and yeah, there were maybe 10 people in the theater.

    • John30013

It had plot holes the size of star destroyers, but it was fun.

    • joeyj1220

They make such a cute couple

      • Dramphooey

        Oh, wow.

      • liondon#iamnotatraitor

Rule #1 of Hollywood gay couples… at least one has to be white….Isaac is a little too Hispanic…won’t happen.

        • joeyj1220

Both John Boyega (Finn) and Isaac are open to the possibility of them being a couple, so maybe!

        • Reality.Bites

          Sulu’s husband is Asian.

          • liondon#iamnotatraitor

He was never named so it doesn’t pass the Bechtel test.

          • Reality.Bites

Adding conditions after the fact is lame.

Adding conditions that don’t even apply… sad.

    • Bambino

Actor Oscar Isaac is game to play the gay character in the Star Wars franchise but it’s unlikely Disney will give permission to pivot that character.

      • Mikey

After seeing that in the film, I was picturing Poe cranking it while thinking about Finn wearing his jacket.

        I know, I’m a pig.

        • narutomania

Can you help it if they positively parade hunky actors and gay storylines in front of you?!

I think not. And I’m right there with you.

        • Prost Seattle

          And I LOVE bacon.

      • kevin vincent

Disney has started to allow LGBT imagery and characters on their shows for years now plus don’t they let Lucasfilms do their own thing

        • Reality.Bites

True – but I can’t imagine for a moment they’re going to make the two hot young male good-guy characters into a romantic couple.

And if they ever did let them kiss it would end up just like Luke and Leia, with them realizing they’re sisters. 😉

    • Ninja0980

      Love me some Oscar Issac.

    • TheManicMechanic

That’s “a look” if there ever was one.

  • bkmn

Needed more full frontal male nudity.

  • Bambino

Disney already generating revenues from three films after paying $4 billions to Lucasfilm.

    • Dramphooey

It made me laugh when people worried about what Disney would do to Star Wars. What could they do that Lucas hadn’t already done scribbling on the original trilogy?

      • Bambino

Star Wars has the simplest back story compare to DC and Marvels comic book universe. Anything else is just an expansion of stories and characters we have seen in all other film. The draw back is, Disney is very anal about straying away from the original format. Regardless who they employed as writers or directors, there will be very little creative input beyond the cookie cutter it insist everyone adhere to.

      • Ninja0980

Jar Jar Binks will forever remove any right Lucas has to complain about what they are doing with Star Wars now.

        • Harveyrabbit
        • Dramphooey

I was thinking more of his edits to the old ones, some of which were really bad. But he supposedly waited on the second trilogy until the special effects had improved to the point to do what he wanted. So what did he do? Jar Jar Binks isn’t the worst for me. For me, it was the announcer during the Pod race. A two headed announcer talking to itself–that is silly crap right out of a cartoon from the 1930s.

  • Slippy_World
  • greenmanTN

Feh. I was in the perfect age range for Star Wars, saw it 4 times in the theater, but it never really caught on with me. Saw the 2nd and 3rd movies once each.

I do regret not buying all the action figures, especially the obscure ones, and keeping them in their original packaging for resale now.

    • Bambino

I didn’t know she was a script doctor until she passed. The list of films include The Last Jedi among other Star Wars films.

      • Cuberly Deux

She supposedly was the go to script doctor for a long list of movies that don’t even acknowledge she worked on them.

I wonder how many of these asshats who told us how she didn’t “age well” has taken a look at Mark Hamill recently? People get old.

      • Dayglo

Carrie lived a hard life off and on for years. She’d done some real and lasting damage to her health. You could see in a documentary where she was worn out worrying over her mom. Sadly, she was in a good mental state at a time when her body just wasn’t healthy enough to see her through a productive old age. She was 60 when she died … way too early.

        • margaretpoa

Yep. It seemed that she had finally found peace and then her body gave out. Need any more proof that there’s not a God?

          • joeyj1220

and the fact that Trump still lives

      • DumbHairyApe

Don’t we?!?!? I was once a dumb dark hairy ape. Now I’m more like a silverback.

      • JCF

Huh, I was just thinking how well Hamill has aged! [No disrespect to Our Carrie at all.]

    • Cuberly Deux

      🙁

    • bkmn

Just watched the recent episode of Graham Norton with Mark Hamill. I have a feeling they had agreed to not bring her up but in the vein of the conversation Mark went there. Brought a couple tears to my eyes.

  • Bluto
  • margaretpoa

Still haven’t seen it and won’t until it comes out on BluRay/DVD.

  • joeyj1220

It was a fun movie. I always thought Adam Driver had a weird/odd sex vibe. In the film he takes off his shirt and I thought “Darth Vader is now long forgotten”

  • Do Something Nice

I won’t be seeing it until it is shown on an airplane. To me, movie franchises are as interesting as chain stores.

    • romanhans

Thank you! I don’t understand the passion for franchises, aka “movies that don’t have ends.” The hero will be tormented internally and externally, there will be loud fights, guess who will win. If Alexander Graham Bell could have seen Iron Man 18 Meets The Ultra-Avengers he’d have taken a hatchet to his movie camera.

      • Do Something Nice

And then there is the dozens of obvious ‘product placements’ to sell something in these “movies.”

But Bell didn’t create the ‘movie camera.’

  • greenmanTN
    • Treant

And as shown in Ted, he has a decent sense of humor, too.

Star War fans aren’t happy with The Last Jedi.

      • greenmanTN

Good. I saw 30 minutes of the first prequel and wanted to kill everyone involved.

        • kevin vincent

I actually kinda liked the prequels…

          • John30013

Except for the Anakin character, they were OK. The kid was too precocious, and the older Anakin was too whiny.

      • Tread

I am and I loved it. I like that it turned all the conventions of the Star Wars universe on their heads.

        • Lazycrockett

What they did to Luke Skywalker was plain wrong. Even Mark Hamill agrees with that.

          • JCF

Care to say why? [ Spoiler font is …. (no spaces in the code) ]

          • Tread

I don’t think so. I think it made him an even more interesting character. Luke always operated with a certain amount of self-doubt. Can you imagine how you would react if one of your students became evil under your watch as the last Jedi teacher?

          • JCF

Ahem, see re spoilers, Tread. [I respectfully suggest you re-format (or delete) that last line.]

          • Todd20036

Luke drinks milk from the tap.

            Just saying.

          • Tread

Not a spoiler. This was established in Force Awakens. It’s the main plot point for Han Solo confronting Kyle Ren.

          • EdmondWherever

He has since changed his mind, and taken back his previous comments.

“I regret voicing my doubts & insecurities in public. Creative differences are a common element of any project but usually remain private. All I wanted was to make good movie. I got more than that- @rianjohnson made an all-time GREAT one!”

I didn’t think they did anything with Luke that hadn’t already been done with Obi-Wan and Yoda. Failure to prevent the devastating rise of an evil challenge to the Jedi? Check. Self-sequestration to a remote world, while evil tramples the galaxy? Check. Reluctance to train the new generation? Check.

People were just disappointed that the cheery, confident hero of Return of the Jedi didn’t stay cheery and confident. But that’s life, and it doesn’t make for an interesting story.

          • pablo

I’m sure that was sincere and that nobody at Disney had… a talk with him.

          • EdmondWherever

I hope they sent a senior executive, I’d hate to think of some poor, quivering intern having to tell Mark Hamill to change his tone.

          • John30013

I’m glad he walked that back. I read his original complaint before I saw the film, and honestly I didn’t see what he was complaining about—which is to say, I thought Luke’s actions and motivations were believable and within the ambit of his character.

      • Dayglo

I fail the nerd / Asperger purity test because I enjoyed it. Always keep your expectations low.

      • SoCalGal20

I’m a Star Wars fan and I totally enjoyed it. And a couple of my friends who are big Star Wars fans also enjoyed, though there are some plot points that they’re reserving judgement on until the next film to see if the payoff is there.

Also, the packed theater I saw it in were clapping and cheering and seemed to enjoy it. 🤷‍♀️

        • John30013

I’m sort of wondering where the next movie will go, too, since they (spoilers redacted; hover over it to reveal) killed off Snoke and Phasma (overhyped character of the decade). But I’m willing to wait and see what they have in store.

Beauty and the Beast was god awful.

    • Ninja0980

      Yup.
      Can’t remake the classics.

      • Reality.Bites

Gosh, good thing the theatre doesn’t ever do that.

What a tragedy it would be if Shakespeare, Wilde and Shaw were ever re-interpreted for new generations. Thank goodness his plays were performed for a few weeks at the Globe theatre and were never mounted again, let alone filmed or remade as Broadway musicals.

Best of all, none of them are on my lawn.

    • Bambino

Live-action remake of Disney animation is all the rage these days. I don’t get it.

      • Ninja0980

Because Disney has run out of ideas, that’s why.

        • Reality.Bites

Because Disney is a business. If they have a million new ideas they’re still going to go back to the well with the old stuff too as often as they can, because that’s what a business does. It maximizes value from the things it owns.

McDonald’s has introduced countless new items. Turned out what people wanted most was to be able to buy the Egg McMuffin (older than the first Star Wars movie) after 10:30.

        • Dramphooey

I wouldn’t say that when Frozen turned the Disney princess model on its head. I would say constantly having to produce content means the vast majority of it is going to be formula.

Just to throw this out I was watching on YouTube an old storyboard for Frozen which was your standard villain doing the same old thing. Somebody actually commented they should have done that so apparently some people want to watch the same damned thing over and over again. Of course, apparently some people voted for Trump.

          • Reality.Bites

It’s kind of nice to know that it’s a virtual certainty that someone has already calculated how many Disney movies this year were originals, how many were sequels and how many were reboots? Virtually none of the Disney classics were original properties in the first place. It seems a bit silly to criticize them for making a live-action Beauty and the Beast after they’ve already done a stage version and I think an ice show as well. And it was, needless to say, never a Disney original.

          • Dramphooey

To the 1920s. I once read Will Rogers produced a parody of The Covered Wagon called Two Wagons, Both Covered. The studio was dismayed with the product but were shocked when it was a success. But rather than give him freedom they interfered in future productions and Rogers groused that all they wanted him to do were stupid things in which he loses his pants.

That probably sounds appealing to a group of gay men but remember that comedy stars of the times had names like Fatty.

          • JCF

“an old storyboard for Frozen which was your standard villain doing the same old thing”

And speaking of changing the “same old thing” to something FAR better: the campaign #GiveElsaAGirlfriend !!! 😀

That Maleficent was crap. From Eleanor Audley’s Mistress of All Evil to Miss Understood.

    • Dayglo

Jean Cocteau’s film is the most magnificent version that will ever be. Just magic.

  • Karl Dubhe 2

The only problem I had with the movie was that I couldn’t hear the dialogue. I’ll watch it again when it comes out on dvd.

I like the notion that the bigots and sexists hate the movie, that makes it better.

    • Bambino

They hated it since The Force Awaken because the lead character is a woman.

      • Karl Dubhe 2

        Hillary haters…

    • DreadPikathulhu

The diversification of the cast is the best thing to come out of the recent movies.

    • E.J.

I thought the bad sound was because I had a cold. The lounge seats were REALLY nice though.

  • Michael White

My husband is a fan so I have seen the last two . He enjoyed them, but I don’t have all the back story. I was living in San Francisco when the very first one played. The lines were over a mile long. I thought I don’t need to see a movie that bad. So I never saw one. Marriage says for better or worse. LOL

    • Matt

That’s kinda sad that you never experienced the first three. I don’t even consider myself to be a huge fan of the franchise, but the original film was one of the best ever for pure fun and escapism. Plus the effects were ahead of its time. Your loss (even if you don’t think so).

  • Dk

one per year and they’ll wear out the franchise soon enough, once Lucas sold to Disney it became part of their theme park. As someone who waited breathlessly in line as a little kid and collected all the figures, I say nothing will ever recreate that magic…

    • Treant

Way back when, I would have done things I wouldn’t be proud of today just to get the action figures.

Today? I’d still do those things, but I’d probably brag about them.

      • Reality.Bites

And you’d do them WITH the action figures.

    • DreadPikathulhu

Same here. There’s just too much with all of the sequels and spin-offs, toys, comics, and merchandising. It’s not special anymore

I do regret that my complete collection of action figures was stolen in the mid-90s though. .

      • Ninja0980

I believe that is what Lucas has been complaining about but if he didn’t want that to happen, he shouldn’t have sold the rights.

        • Reality.Bites

The way I see it, Disney couldn’t possibly harm the franchise more than Lucas, who effectively killed it.

          • Ninja0980

Yup, the prequels and the absurd decision to put the younger version of Darth Vader in the Return of the Jedi as the ghost were kisses of death.

    • bkmn

    • JCF

      Good.

  • R W C

With that kind of box office success you’d think they could finally afford to pay me to watch!

  • TheManicMechanic

Look at all that licensed merchandise! Who here remembers when movies weren’t written around toys and other profit centers?

    • Bambino

Now it’s a requirement to create merchandise for the film franchise. The film industry know how parents love to indulge their children.

      • TheManicMechanic

Few parents would buy a Devine action figure for their kids, but it would be a hit among this crowd. Those Funko Pop figurines of movie and TV characters seem to be a bigger hit with adults.

    • fiizok

I stopped caring about Star Wars about the time that I was waiting in the checkout line at the store next to a display of Darth Maul Shampoo. Not kidding.

      • TheManicMechanic

There are probably the most inane tie-ins for Star Wars running on various commercials. The worst to me are for cars, with those driving finding themselves commuting with tie fighters and the like. Sorry, but if you are pretending to be navigating traffic of spaceships and imperial walkers and have to rely on an automatic safety braking feature on a car you should not be driving.

  • Frommer_Gast

    Great!
So finally they’ll have the money to hire somebody to write dialogue!
And perhaps even a proof-reader spotting at least the major plot holes!

Dear retailers — All the Star Wars merch is fun but IT’S TIME TO PUT AWAY THE CHRISTMAS MUSIC! There, I’ve said it.

    • safari

They’re just ready for next Christmas.

    • bkmn

And put it away until after Thanksgiving next year.

    • Lazycrockett

Just remember they might look cuddly, but they were going to roast and eat Han.

        Still nicer than his son.

    • Dramphooey

Twelth Night isn’t until January 5th. I’m one of those who thinks Christmas starts too early and ends too early.

      • CanuckDon

I agree. A ridiculously long buildup but once the day comes, it’s out the door and onto the next holiday. I enjoy Christmas afterglow. 🙂

        • djcoastermark

Twas the week before xmas and walmart already had rows of valentines day candies , cards, and decorations on glorious display. sheesh.

  • Friday’s_cat

Disney raking in the cash, will the park character actors and service employees see a bit of the wealth or do MBA suits pocket it all?

    • david

      Look, everybody. Another Debbie Downer.

      • Treant

Catch me on Robert Mueller, unlikelihood of success thereof, if you want some real downer material.

  • I_Misuse_Gender_Pronouns

It seems like a wonderful movie.

    • another_steve

(love to you for your screen name 😉

  • Treant

“And the nicest part of all, Val? I look just like you!

The Twilight Zone marathon is on Syfy.

    • I have the complete DVD collection. 🙂 Worth every penny.

      • fiizok

The blu rays are even awesomer!

        • I misspoke. The blu-rays are what I have. Yes, they are awesomer. The remastering is magnificent.

          • AmeriCanadian

Even the video-taped episodes? They looked awful compared to the regular filmed episodes. I can’t image them looking better on blue ray, which will magnify every flaw.

          • Reality.Bites

I don’t imagine the later CBS version or the syndicated version would be part of BeccaM’s box set.

      • another_steve

        Ditto.

Also consider getting the complete “The Outer Limits” DVD collection. I did. An uneven series, but it contains some of the finest sci-fi / fantasy ever done on TV.

        • fiizok

Save your money. The original Outer Limits series is about my favorite program ever, but the DVDs were very poorly mastered. Also the series will be coming to Blu Ray soon, undoubtedly worth waiting for.

          • another_steve

Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll check it out.

I’m a fanatic of both series – The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits. I watched both series during their original runs. I was born in 1952. Both series hit me at a vulnerable age. Altered me, forever.

The Outer Limits is a much-undervalued series. Uneven, it was. It contained some terrible dreck but (as I suggested in my comment elsewhere) also contained some of the most sublime television of its genre to date.

  • pablo

Worst of the Star Wars movies with the exception of Phantom Menace. It’s long. It’s slow. It’s no fun. Nothing in it makes any sense.

    • Tread

Ok, so we didn’t watch the same movie then. Because I thought it was tense, exciting, and had really great twists in the plot.

      • jimbo65

There’s nothing worse than having these fans piss all over it because it didn’t play out the way they wanted. In other words, fan entitlement. It didn’t play out the way I thought, but it’s not my movie. Having said that, I enjoyed it.

  • ajchar

Yawn. Of course it was going to hit numbers like that, its a rehash of previous movies so the fans love it. I wasn’t a fan of the second trilogy or the first part of the this new trilogy. I’ll wait until I can see it at home cheaper.

    • Tread

Wait, so you haven’t seen it but you’re calling it a rehash of other movies? Ok, then.

      • ajchar

All the reviews with spoilers are out, so yes.

        • Tread

Yeah, sorry. Reading a review versus watching the movie doesn’t cut it. It’s not a rehash of the previous movies at all.

  • JCF

    I liked it.

Apparently, liking SW:TLJ is a “good thing” (in terms of those who are pissed off about it: don’t like non-whites, don’t like female heroes, don’t like the *distinct* anti-1% message, don’t like the general message of EQUALITY it promotes)

    • another_steve

One of the reasons for the series’ great success over the years, I think, is that each installment can be viewed and appreciated on different levels.

Kids like the adventure, the excitement, the creatures and the special effects. Adults into subtlety and subtext can discern all manner of deep and profound themes in the films. “The Force,” for instance, can be appreciated on many levels.

A law of the marketplace: Create something that can be equally appreciated by eight year olds and eighty year olds, and you have a winner.

      • bkmn

Trump should be a major fan since he is 71 years old but acts like a three year old.

        • another_steve

Donald Trump wouldn’t recognize a profundity even if he fell over it on the way to his gold-plated bathroom.

    • pablo

There are plenty of reasons to not like this movie that have nothing to do with the gender and race of the protagonists. I could go into detail but not without spoilers.

  • safari

I just put on the Force Awakens. I haven’t seen it yet.

    • No spoilers then. I enjoyed it, suffice to say.

    • coram nobis

      Worthwhile.

    • Anastasia Beaverhousen

You’ll love when Chewie goes down on the Ewok. Have I said too much?

  • Tread

I think most people are pissed off about the movie because it shows weakness in their childhood heroes.

    • pablo

Not just weakness, but total failures. How did Leia, Ackbar, and the rebels mismanage things so badly that the new republic crumbled after just 30 years?

      • SoCalGal20

How did the United States go from democracy to authoritarianism within a year?

      • That_Looks_Delicious

Hmmm. A message for our time?

      • Lazycrockett

Leia is part of the resistance working behind The New Order’s borders, which you would think would have been spelled out better in TWA. My issue is where the hell is the rest of the Republic fleet? Yes a huge part got destroyed after the Planet Killer blew up the Republic Senate, but you’d think the rest would be attacking the NO after that?

        • Tread

It blew up their entire fleet. They state that during the Force Awakens. Scenes cut out from the movie state they were having a general election at the time so the whole fleet was in the system destroyed.

      • How did American Dems mismanage things so badly that in less than a decade after holding the White House with the first African American President, a Dem House majority and Senate supermajority that the coalition crumbled and was replaced by a party representing only about 1/3 of Americans?

It happens. Many mistakes along the way, including:

        – Dropping the 50-state challenge all seats strategy (firing Dean)
        – Passing ACA but backloading the good stuff 4 years down the road so the GOP could run in 2010 against it and win in a wave election
        – Failing to challenge massive partisan gerrymandering immediately after the census
        – Continuing to cooperate with the new GOP majorities even as they made it clear they wanted power, not to govern
        – Letting Citizens United stand
        – Failing to address the danger of foreign interference in our elections
        – And in less than ONE YEAR, turn from democracy to fascist autocracy, with citizens openly calling for a strongman dictator to sweep away the gov’t…and all of THIS in a time of relative economic stability

And lots more. Thirty years in political terms is a pretty good run.

        • SoCalGal20

It didn’t take 30 years for Nazis to to kill millions of people and start a world war.l, either.

I used to be one of those people who asked how could the Nazis and Hitler do what they did? How did Germans let that happen? The rest of Europe? Now I have a pretty good idea.

        • Ninja0980

The first one on your list was the killer.
Democrats not paying attention to local and state races bit them in the butt big time.
Also, our failure to fight for the courts is another thing that will haunt us for generations to come.

      • Tread

Because it and it’s fleet got blown up in the previous movie? Things had been going pretty well for the Republic but it sounds like The First Order kept itself hidden for a long time before coming out and fucking up the Republic.

      • coram nobis

        Two prequels:

        A New Audacity of Hope

        The Orange Menace

    • Lazycrockett

My main problem is everything that was set up got tossed out. A twist here and there is fine, its expected. There is nothing that connects these two films into a cohesive trilogy. What’s to look forward to, watching Leia get killed in a by cargo door dropping on her?

  • pablo

I’ve been seeing car commercials with Star Wars tie-ins. Is anyone else disturbed by this?

    • TuuxKabin

Commercials disturbing by their nature. Opportunistic infections.

    • Tulle Christensen

Commercial tie-ins with popular shows has been a thing since the radio days, longer than I have been alive and I am an old fart

      • pablo

It bothers me because a kids’ movie is being used to sell adult things. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that happen before.

  • M Jackson

I’ve yet to see it. It is bittersweet to see Carrie peering out of posters everywhere, to remind us of our loss.

We saw “Call Me By Your Name” today. I can’t remember a movie that’s bided it’s time so patiently and then had so much emotion backloaded to the final scenes. And that final shot — of course the kid is going to win (his first) Oscar.

    • another_steve

“Call Me” is playing around here and man and I are considering going.

      Do you recommend it?

Without giving away the story line – Is the film an upper, a downer or somewhere in between?

      • djcoastermark

Saw the movie the other day, and just one word, Awesome !

      • M Jackson

It is in no way a downer, but I will say there is s bittersweet quality at the end. The coming-of-age aspect of it makes it pretty much required viewing for gay men and women everywhere. It was not MY story, but it honors us all.
Plus it’s gorgeous to look at, and the Italian scenery is nice too. 😉

      • That_Looks_Delicious

That movie and “The Shape of Water” have been generating awards buzz.

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

I like The Shape of Water. If you have seen Pan’s Labrynth then it has the same vibe.

      • Dayglo

It’s pretty powerful … and the lead characters are Jewish!

        • another_steve

Well we Jews encapsulate the artful.

Dear fuckin’ Jesus… “White Christmas” is an Irving Berlin creation.

    • djcoastermark

Yeah, the last few scenes blew me away.

      • M Jackson

My partner and I agreed about Michael Shulbarg’s magnificent monologue on the sofa.

        • djcoastermark

          Yep, yep and yep !

        • Dayglo

I would’ve killed for a dad like that.

    • Noel Kanalley

I think it’s the best queer romance I’ve ever seen. And I don’t do romantic films. It was beautifully shot, nearly all the directorial choices were genious, and I found myself relating to the Elio character to a nearly uncomfortable degree. Like, to the point of remembering exactly what it was like being 17, in bed on a warm summer night dreaming of an Armie Hammer type. And trying to talk to your crush about “the things that matter”, and having absolutely no idea if he’s getting the message, that hope and terror all at once. And I was just bawling at the end. A good number of the audience was, too.

    • John30013

As well he (Timothee Chalamet) should, as should Armie Hammer and the movie itself (Best Picture, Director and Cinematography). It blew me away, especially the last few scenes.

  • SoCalGal20

This is OT but a follow up on Jess Phoenix, the queer volcanologist running in CA25. She made her funraising goal of jitting $100,000 last night. Her Crowdpac site also has this great campaign video that focuses on climate change and science.

I should have known. We did New Year’s Eve and I turned into a total horn-dog. That always happens when I get a cold. Then I was all slam-bam-thank-you-Sam, and **snore**. Which also happens when I turn all horn-dog from a cold.

Some of the coldest air in quite a while could be found Friday morning and Saturday morning. The potential exists for temperatures to be well below zero for inland areas.

    Really? Colder?

    • Treant

It is here; Thursday through Saturday features lows of 1-3 degrees at the airport, which means -4 to -2 or so here. Last night only hit just below zero.

      • Treant

“Natural” has no legal meaning, and everything from my soap to any food item, no matter how processed, can be called natural.

If you’ve ever seen a lye tree or a mine where they dig up processed foods, let me know.

ETA: “Organic” is also remarkably flexible in terms of foods and cosmetics. It doesn’t necessarily mean what you might think it means…

Cool that it has multiple female protagonists. However, Mark Hamill is not leading man material. Why put him up front when you have Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac right there?

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

My problem with movies is some seem to espouse a zero sum game with no possible progress where for some reason heroes just produce villains by existing. Despite my profound belief that human stupidity is the densest material in the universe, I also happen to believe in win-win scenarios for multiple sides. IN RL, if all the good people died, it just makes the bad side stronger not disappear. I truly believes this concept makes people complacent and even anti-progress.

    • safari

No one started the fire. It was always burning.

    • Cuberly Deux

Watched Close Encounters of the Third Kind a few weeks ago. It’d been a very long time since I’d seen it. Even after knowing how it ends, and sort of smirking at the moments of Spielberg excess here and there. One of the things that’s always been interesting is the nuance of the supposed villains, are they even villains? Who are the villains?

The aliens terrorize & abduct people, implant visions that wreck havoc on their lives. But they bring the abductees back unharmed. Want to establish contact with us.

The government chases, interrogates, gases, cordons off entire regions from the populace, yet at the end they set the stage for first contact and allow Roy the chance to go with the aliens. Though I’m pretty sure his wife wouldn’t have been too pleased with that.

Revisiting the movie was surprisingly refreshing. It’s a movie that builds suspense so well, it’s very much more than the sum of it’s parts. But it also takes the time to build, I was surprised at the pacing, especially compared to how a typical “modern” escapist movie is edited.

      • Ben in Oakland

Spielberg and Lucas movies seem to excell at moral muddiness and people doing things for no particular reason.

I just watched this crappy movie, and was told to believe at humans missed their androids and robots more han they did real people.

Considering the dialogue that made it to screen, one can only imagine what those early rewrites were like and can only sympathize with him.

Also, Han and Leia got the good lines. He got the pontificating ass lines that only work if the movie becomes, well, Star Wars.

Leia was such a breath of fresh air for movies back then. You knew that she was never going to be running through a jungle in high heels.

She was, after all, not a Disney princess, but a real princess.

There’s a damn good chance Guinness never met James Earl Jones, or if he did, not for anything related to Star Wars.

When Carrie Fisher and James Earl Jones both guested on the Big Bang Theory a few years ago one of them mentioned it was their first time ever meeting.

I know in modern film making voice actors often consider being on set with the other actors to record their dialogue is an important part of the process. Like the guy who plays the racoon in Guardians.

In Doctor Who there’s one man, Nicholas Briggs, who provides the voices for all Dalek, Judoon and Cybermen characters using an old fashioned analogue voice modulator or something. Not sure what it’s called. He does them all live on set, sometimes voicing consecutive lines of dialogue with himself.

I freaked out today, having spotted a nasty thing on my thigh. I figured it was cancer and that I wouldn’t live to the end of 2018. Fine way to begin the new year.

So my husband reminded me that in a drunken stupor last night (New Year’s Eve) I collided with the living room bar and damaged myself. I had forgotten.

    I feel better now.

I hear ya. With a couple of siblings going through cancers, I am paranoid as hell about my health and would diagnose any symptoms I might have as cancer first before being dismiss by my doctor.

      • another_steve

Vigilance, as opposed to paranoia, is a good thing.

People reading here (including you, Bambino) might want to consider this:

Every so many months – 4 or 5 or 6 or whatever – have a friend or loved one carefully examine your body for “new things.” For things that don’t look “quite right.” Do the same for your friend or loved one.

Skin cancers detected early are generally curable.

o/t scene: new year’s day @ friends’ weekend house in the mountains. 20 degrees outside. dogs sleeping by the fire. black eyed peas simmering on the stove (my contribution to this annual retreat is cooking the new year dinner). all is quiet. i’m taking a rest with a flute of left over bubbly and suddenly commotion from our bedroom where husband has been napping. i cautiously walk in and husband is watching a youtube tutorial and practicing how to make hospital corners on the bed. why? his resolution is to make the bed better in 2018. ah, the men we love.

We were talking to this man from Atlanta (sorry if you’re here and I don’t remember your name!) and I don’t even know how the subject came up but before we know it he had a spare t-shirt from his husband’s backpack and was showing us how to do the Japanese t-shirt folding.

        • boobert

It works. It took me several times before I got it !

        • Dayglo

I’ve given up on folding fitted sheets. I just fake it and toss ’em on the bottom of my linen pile. But, if you have OCD, something like that could totally keep you up all night.

          • Robincho

I have CDO. It’s just like OCD, except THE FUCKING LETTERS ARE IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER AS THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE, GODDAMNIT…

        • AmeriCanadian

Here’s a slightly better example. You’re only grabbing three of the four corners. One corner stays free but the sheet has to be a rectangle before you start folding.

        • boobert

I did that for years. I’m telling you , once you get it right , you’ll be amazed how simple it is. It’s just like they were folded when new ! lol

        • edrex

          exactly so.

      • Cattleya1

Same here – my 2nd part-time job in HS was attendant in a coin laundry. I was the only 16 year old boy in the state who could fold a fitted sheet.

      • JCF

Good Lord, watching this, I can’t BELIEVE how complicated they’re making it! And now Martha’s putting it on a large (clean!) counter, which is cheating (what can’t you fold, w/ a a large flat surface like that?)

How it’s done in the REAL world:

        1. You find the top two corners.
        2. You stick the bottom two corners (inside out) in ’em.
        3. Bring these 2 (which are really 4) corners together.
        4. Fold, same as you would a top sheet.

That’s all there is to it.

      • John30013

Wow, I feel good! I figured this out myself several years ago. My technique isn’t exactly like Martha’s, but it’s not far off and produces the same result.

(That said, I tend to take her final advice and just put the sheet back on the bed as soon as I’ve washed and dried it.)

    • another_steve

Ah, hospital corners. I remember my mother teaching us kids how to make them. Most times now it’s fitted sheets, but to me there is nothing like getting into a bed with sheets snug and tight made with hospital corners. And yes, making black eyed peas here tonight for dinner. Hubs keeps trying to get into the pot of them and they’re not even done yet. ( have to keep smacking his hands)

      • Hue-Man

I learned to make them when I spent 3 months in hospital before age 10. Explains why I have a fitted sheet and a duvet on my bed now! https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/b4b649ecd8895ff991f77e848b6348cb891368042ff35a280c4127e82cf0a6f8.jpg

Um, this diagram still assumes a fitted (bottom) sheet.

      • Reality.Bites

We always had a fitted bottom sheet and a top sheet that was put on with hospital corners. I really don’t know any other way to make a bed.

However I now need the sheet to be pretty loose at the bottom.

Greens yes, but no cornbread (trying to cut down a bit on the breads) mashed cauliflower, and roast smoky pork butt thingy.

        • John30013

My husband accuses me of only cooking once a year (it’s at least twice that!), but today I made collards, black eyed peas, and a nice ham. Was quite yummy, and the ham bone and left over ham will end up in bean soup in a few weeks, which he also loves.

No corn bread or sweet potatoes for us this year, although we did have (frozen) yeast rolls (Sister Schusters, which are really delicious).

Happy New Year to you and yours, edrex!

This is the worst Star Wars. I call it a cut and paste job because multiple scenes are just like ones in the earlier movies. Plus the worst actor as the villain son of Han and Leia–as bad as the horrible child actor who played little Anakin and also the wooden Hayden Christensen who was the older Anakin. Even the computer generated villain Snope was so artificial looking. No originality and bad acting. Lucas needs to hang his head in shame for ruining a good story.

As of today, here in Ontario young people under 25 are covered for prescription drugs.

Many working people (and their families) are covered for prescriptions through a plan at work, while over 65 and those on government assistance are covered. There’s a disaster plan that kicks in if you’re spending more than 4% of your net income on prescription drugs, but it’s a cumbersome system and still can be a substantial cash outlay.

This means that young men will have access to free Prep in the years they’re most likely to need it, type 1 diabetics get free insulin and test strips.

I’m still 5 ½ years away from free drugs. So far my costs are affordable, maybe around $200 a month. The blood thinner and asthma meds aren’t available as generics.

I got some of my metabolic tests back and, in conjunction with going to be living with my colleague’s family for much of January and my doctor’s glares tomorrow at noontime, I have decided to do a Soylent-based diet. 800 cals of genetically-modified, flavor neutral, macro-balanced liquids and a healthy dinner. Or just another Soylent. In theory one can live off of them. They were made by brogrammers, so what could go wrong?

So this is a thing that’s been happening on twitter. And I can’t imagine it’s coincidence that it’s picking up going into 2018. Basically, there is an organized Gamergate-style effort by Bernie Bros and Red Rose Twitter to harrass and dox prominent POC, women, and LGBT Hillary supporters and activists off of twitter by mass reporting accounts for harrassment which Twitter then happily suspends while doing NOTHING about the accounts that are actually harrassing and doxxing people.

I have no doubt that a lot of these people are actually alt-right assholes or Russian trolls and that this is all part of Russia’s meddling.

    • Ninja0980

I do think you’re partially right but the sad reality is there are many folks on the far left who want to purge the Democratic party of anyone who doesn’t worship St.Bernie and thinks POC,LGBT folks etc. are “distractions” from the “greater good” of economic issues etc.
Not a surprise at all to see them doing this.

      • SoCalGal20

Oh, I know some of them legit worship St. Bernie. But there’s a lot going on here, not just that.

melanoma’s outfit, 53,000 dollars including the bag, not even counting the shoes that is hard to figure out their cost.

That’s right, the outfit on the right costs more than a sedan, it’s a Dolce & Grabbiano shower curtain. That was maybe to impress the G7 conference in Sicily.

        • Blake J Butler

What i’ve gathered so far, the right outrage of Michelle’s gowns for events and wardrobe has been criticized as out of touch. Yet isn’t really all that expensive one would think, with exception to the gowns but those are paid for, or given to her to wear for an event’s purpose.

I disagree with this articles assumption that michelle and melania are both equally game to criticize. because melania literally spends money for the sake of her not feeling naked without spending tens of thousands of dollars on an outfit ensemble even for “charity” work, its pathetic and out of touch. But hey she’s rich, white, and republican, so she gets the exemptions of the blame Michelle had directed towards her.

As I understand it, their reasoning goes something like this:

Eve’s sin in the Garden of Eden introduced carnal knowledge to humankind. Before that, Adam was a nice boy. But then he tasted of the apple (knowledge) and he went bad.

Jesus came to forgive us of Eve’s sin, but for a price. We must renounce our essential humanness and become as was Christ: pure and chaste and without genitals.

Except for fucking and making more Christ-likes – who are equally pure and chaste and without genitals.

The above is my culturally-Jewish reading of the goyish meshugas.

        I might be wrong.

        • BobSF_94117

As I understand it, their reasoning goes something like this:

Penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis, penis.

May we never hear a word from Tony Perkins, Brian Brown, or any of the other tools who are so invisible to the rest of America so as to be superfluous. I get why every utterance of Trump is newsworthy, but stop rubbing our noses in the utterances of every homophobe that issues a screed.

Not 2 people out of 1000 have any idea of who Tony Perkins is, or Brian Brown, but he can’t cock his leg to fart without us smelling it. At times JMG seems like a nattering nabob of negativity, constant bad news, and seriously we could use some good news every once in a while. Would it kill you to post something from pop culture that isn’t so goddamn depressing and hopeless?

    • IDavid

That happens by never focusing ones attention on them, as in never mentioning their names.

    • greenmanTN

It’s the people here who make it worth visiting. Almost without fail every news story is a turd sandwich, often homophobes who can’t get 100 people to show up for a “protest.” Many of us are depressed as hell, with good reason, so how about some good news every once in a while? The people are great but JMG has become depressing.

I get what you’re saying but the problem is while the average Joe might not know who these guy/gals are, the Republicans in power certainly do and bend over backwards to kiss their asses.
And since they’re in power right now..expect to see posts focusing on that.

      • greenmanTN

Yet good things do happen. Silly things. Funny things. Happy things.

But not if you get your news from here. Queerly is the National Enquirer of Gay news sites but at least it isn’t constantly negative.

        • Ninja0980

I get your point but I’ve never gotten the since JMG has been that kind of site.

          • greenmanTN

I’m not going to belabor the point. It just seems to me there is lot of gay themed news in the world but it is skipped in favor of the latest Trump Tweet or whatever Bill Donahue or some other doofus with a fax machine who no one could pick out of a line up says. Maybe the intent is to confront readers with those negative voices to inspire resistance, but to me it’s ultimately negative and it becomes overwhelming. Nearly every single goddam post is “shitty person does shitty thing” like a constant drum beat.

I do not advocate a “don’t worry be happy” POV, but I wonder if, in aggregate, it isn’t making us all more stressed because there’s rarely anything positive.

          • Lumpy Gaga

To each his own, but better that than the fake joy of thinly disguised ads launched as TOTALLY GAY viral videos.

Or, to paraphrase what was once said of Woody Allen (“Throw people into a room with their problems, and you’ve got Chekhov.”)… “Throw a wig and heels on a failed comedian and suddenly EVERYTHING’S HILARIOUS!”

          • greenmanTN

I prefer Mel Brooks’ definition of comedy and tragedy: “Tragedy is when I stub my toe. Comedy is when you fall down the stairs,”

    • AJ Drew

I think knowing the names and true histories of the haters is important; case in point, it wasn’t that long ago that Tony Perkins was the go-to guy providing counter-arguments as a moral authority for major network and cable news programs with stories about anything remotely gay related. Thanks to sites like this blog, a grassroots effort to alert the media about what the guy really says and thinks largely put an end to that.

I know you don’t need me to gaysplain that, and I get your overall point, but the major news wires don’t carry many feel-good stories, and Joe aggregates news, so… what to do?

      • greenmanTN

I don’t know. I’m just bitching, I guess. JMG is where I get a lot of my news, but at times it seems unremittingly negative, only focuses on the negative, and thus inspires hopelessness instead of inspiration. It seems to me that the good news I get from here, the funny, the inspiring, comes from the comments rather than from the edititorial choice of featured stories.

Not to be Mary fucking Poppins, but a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, and death notices don’t count.

        • AJ Drew

I hear you, but JMG is focused where it’s focused, and keeping up with GOP and hater shenanigans (plus the rare ‘general’ news of interest, like this movie post,) is surely a never-ending task as is.

If you need to take a break once in a while for your sanity, do so!

There are “positive news” sites, too… GNN and sunnyskyz come to mind. They lean a bit saccharine, but they exist.

          • greenmanTN

            What, no fluffykittenz.com? 😉

Maybe I do need to take a break or at least expand the number of sites I visit. I’ve made this my primary site and that’s my own doing, no one else’s. This Year has been a real shit sandwich, politically and otherwise, and i guess I’m coming to realize that I need some upbeat news too, even if it’s silly or shallow. I love the people here, the wit and intelligence, and it’s my own fault I haven’t sought out balance.

I suspect I’ll be around as usual, but in case I’m not you or anyone else can contact me at mummyscurse @yahoo. Easy to remember, yes? That’s why i went through about 200 other names before I got one without numbers imposed.

The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin
    http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/films/untold-tales-armistead-maupin/

The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin examines the life and work of one of the world’s most beloved storytellers, following his evolution from a conservative son of the Old South into a gay rights pioneer whose novels have inspired millions to claim their own truth. Jennifer Kroot’s documentary about the creator of Tales of the City also gets by with some help from the author’s friends — including Neil Gaiman, Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis, Sir Ian McKellen and Amy Tan — along with Maupin himself to offer a disarmingly frank look at the journey that took him from the jungles of Vietnam to the bathhouses of ‘70s San Francisco to the frontlines of America’s ongoing culture war.

    • djcoastermark

I’m going to have to look that up. I have been an avid follower of The Tales from even before the first PBS show. I have each and every one of the books from the time each came out. Such a great life long story.

      • DaddyRay

It is great – watching it now

      • DaddyRay

Just finished watching at it was beautifully done
Tales of the City holds a very special place in my heart. I have read all of the books. I recorded it when it was on TV and on Showtime. I bought the official VHS versions. I have bought the DVDs and watch them every so often (typically when I am home sick with a cold or just want to escape). The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin is terrific, I hope you are able to see it.

Does anything “do anything” on New Year’s day? When i was a kid we’d go to my grandparents’ house and have french/Canadian meat pie, baked beans and such, and all the cousins were there. I enjoyed it a lot more than xmas.

Today i did a bunch of housework that’s been neglected the past few weeks, and hubs worked.

    • Lazycrockett

As a kid my parents or their family never celebrated ny eve or ny day. It’s always been a non holiday to me.

        • AJ Drew

Nice. In the end, my dogs dragged me, swearing and shivering, for a few miles through the neighborhood, so I did not escape the cold. Perhaps I just should have done the hike afterall. (shrug)

I thought that New Year’s Day would bring me good things to come instead in the span of 24 hours I have been struck with grief and tragedy as one of my beloved dogs who belong to my sister was run over in the early morning and my sister this evening had successfully committed suicide via firearm.

I know I’m a lot stronger to deal with heavy emotional rollercosters, During this time I need to practice self care and need to go through the mourning process so I may pop up here and there and light humor stuff would be appreciated. I know you all will understand.

I’ve had flip phones for 18 years. For some reason verizon screwed with our phone service at the house, and we can barely make a call without being thrown off. They work fine on away from home. Old people DON’T like change. I’m taking an excedrin an having a dish of ice cream. I hate you verizon for messing up my flip, lol.

I’m going to offer some unasked for advice, but it’s not just to you.

If you’re in your 50s or 60s, possibly 70s, then everything you’re used to will disappear long before you do and if you choose to retain an attachment to old technology you will become unable to function unassisted in society long before you need to. I am witnessing this happen to my mother. She has children to help. Most of us don’t.

BTW – an iPhone SE isn’t any simpler to use than any other iPhone. Just smaller and less expensive.

    https://www.glamour.com/story/softouch-device-performs-abortion-in-3-minutes

“You’ve probably never heard of it, but recently a device that has the power to transform the abortion process hit the health care scene. It fits in the palm of a doctor’s hand and doesn’t require an electric suction machine or an operating room or fasting the night before. A patient doesn’t need to be sedated and there are and no limits on her lifestyle either before or after the procedure. In fact, she can get the entire procedure done in her lunch hour an d go right back to work. It’s nonsurgical, noninvasive and is nearly 100 percent effective. It can be completed in 60 to 90 seconds if the patient is less than six weeks pregnant and in about two or three minutes if she’s between six and 10 weeks. The device is called SofTouch. So why haven’t we heard more about it?”

Cynic that I am, if they do manage to outlaw abortion, I can imagine some people using this device in the underground.

I signed up for the CBS all access service to watch more of the Star Trek Discovery series and I am not impressed. Time and time again when commercials come for CBS shows like NCIS, CSI and others, the volume is so loud I have to mute the TV.

It is almost like the execs don’t experience the product they are selling.

Needless to say I will not subscribe to a service that tries to blow out my eardrums.

I tried to watch TNG from their archive. It was areial quality. I have no idea why.

      • bkmn

For some reason either Roddenberry or the studio didn’t want to invest in the equipment to film TNG in high def. Not sure why they have not bothered to remaster the series, as it would be worth the investment.

        • safari

The thing is there are remastered versions out there. But this was really rough from CBS.

DS9 will never get the treatment cause it was filmed entirely on video. waaaaaaaa

          • safari

            We can’t just say “Enhance”?

          • octobercountry

Well, DS9 was shot on 35mm film, but it was edited on video and all the effects were rendered in the lower-resolution video format. It could be re-done in high definition, just as TNG was, but it simply isn’t worth the cost—there isn’t enough of a fan base who would buy the series to make it worthwhile. Which is a shame, because in my opinion DS9 was the best Trek series of them all.

          • Reality.Bites

DS9 was shot on film as was Voyager. Both were edited on video, as was Next Gen. Re-editing and remastering from the original negatives is an expensive and laborious process that isn’t justified by the interest in the shows. This is the case for almost every show hour-long prime time show produced in the 80s and 90s.

Shows shot on videotape at the time had a distinct stagey-soap opera look. If used on a science fiction or fantasy show like DS9 it would have the effect of making it look like a cheap fan production.

        • Reality.Bites

TNG was shot on 35mm film. No shows were being shot in HD in the 1980s and early to mid 90s when the show was made.

As is the case with most filmed series of the era, it was edited on tape and needed to be not merely remastered, but re-assembled shot by shot from the original film negatives.

And this was indeed done years ago.

None of which explains why that version isn’t being used on all-Access.

But doesn’t seem fair to blame Roddenberry for a decision that couldn’t have been made at the time and would never have been his to make.

    • Lazycrockett

I’m considering signing up for Hulu or Netflix. Is one better than the other? I’m more interested in series than movies, though I like those too. Amazon Prime maybe?

I’d like to see Handmaids Tale.

    • AJ Drew

Handmaids Tale is Hulu, so there ya go! That said, I have never tried Hulu, so of the other two, Netflix probably has more content, but if you’d use the other services that come with Prime (free shipping, music, photo storage,) then Prime is the better value… actually with Netflix’ recent price increase, Prime is now cheaper as well.

      • greenmanTN

I don’t even know why I’m thinking about it. I really don’t watch TV at all. I just hear about things and think “That sounds good!” but I never follow through. Game of Thrones? 1 season. Downton Abbey? Three seasons, only because I was forced.

        • Reality.Bites

For quite a few years I got all my content through illegal downloads. I now subscribe to Netflix, Amazon Prime and a baseline TV service that gives me the US and Canadian broadcast networks.

And 90% of the time I still watch illegal downloads, although now it’s of content I legally subscribe to. I subscribe so I can get 4K content, which is usually delayed or unavailable in illegal downloads, and because Netflix helps you discover things you might not see otherwise.

But the main point I’m making is that we’re creatures of habit. Subscribing to Netflix and “cable” didn’t change my viewing habits.

There’s far more good TV, good music, good literature, good theatre, good restaurants, etc. out there than we can make use of. If you’re happy with the forms of recreation you enjoy, there’s nothing wrong with that and trying to change it likely won’t work.

          Go for free trials. 😉

Addiction has been proposed to have several defining components: (1) continued engagement in a behavior despite adverse consequences,
    (2) diminished self-control over engagement in the behavior,
    (3) compulsive engagement in the behavior, and
    (4) an appetitive urge or craving state prior to engaging in the behavior

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4458066/

Does anyone have a *hobby* they enjoy so much that they have a hard time stepping away from it? The definition of “addiction” and “compulsion” in DSM-5 suggests that in all cases it must interfere with normal functioning. Sexual, eating, substances, gambling, hoarding and exercise compulsions are the most common psychiatric diagnoses..

By some definitions, you can have a gaming, gardening, shopping or Internet addiction….most people might call it a hobby if it involves books, collecting, playing a musical instrument or painting, for example.

When it’s easy to hide the activity you love and you still get your daily work done, few people realize that you have an addiction. If a compulsion/hobby just interferes with sleep time and social relationships, it’s treated as no big deal if it doesn’t involve substance use, costs minimal money, causes no harm to others and it makes you smile while coping with life’s daily issues…then you don’t know if you should seek help or not.
