Pope Francis: 2017 Was A Year Of Lies And Injustices

Reuters reports:

At his last public event of the year, an evening vespers service in St. Peter’s Basilica, the pontiff said that humanity had “wasted and wounded” the year “in many ways with works of death, with lies and injustices”.

While war was the most obvious sign of “unrepentant and absurd pride”, many other transgressions had caused “human, social and environmental degradation”.

While the pope did not mention any specific events from 2017, he had made his voice heard on many of the world’s biggest issues over the course of the year.

  • Paula

Lies and injustices? Well, shut your lying mouth then, foul priest because you are one of the worst offenders.

    • killreligion

He forget to lament the death of irony this year

  • PickyPecker

Impotent, useless words from a man who represents noone nor anything.

  • Colonel Panic.

And the Catholic church are the biggest liars of the lot. Not to mention the incalculable mental and physical harm it does.

“other transgressions had caused “human, social and environmental degradation”.

    • Juvela Bumblebee

I met him once, before all the scandals hit. I was young, and still in the church, and excited to be meeting a bishop. I cannot remember now whether he was a cardinal yet. I was shocked, quite shaken by the experience. He was soooooo slimy. Think classic TV portrayal of a “used car salesman” and you would not be far off. The discord between what he was and what he was supposed to be was stunning. I was out of the church within a year. My reasons were many, and more substantial than the failings of just one man, but meeting him was a significant data point.

      • Sporkfighter

“My reasons were many, and more substantial than the failings of just one man, but meeting him was a significant data point.”

The failings of one man in a position of power points to failings of the many men who advanced that man to that position of power. That Berard Law was who the church leadership chose to be one of their own and then protected for decades is an indictment of the organization as a whole.

        • Juvela Bumblebee

          Absolutely!

          • Juvela Bumblebee

However, even if he [Bernard Law] had been a virtuous man, which he was not, and even had the church had a history of honesty and goodness and acceptance of gays and women, which it does not, I would have been out. Their view of reality is just fundamentally flawed, and, from their behaviour, it is clear that even they do not believe in it. That is what killed them for me. Coming to this understanding is just a developmental stage. Some get there in their early teens. It took me until my later teens. I was too trusting back then, so that is probably why it took me longer.

      • Smith_90125

He’s the bastard who gave absolution to Argentina’s military during the “dirty war”, to pilots who threw conscious human beings out of helicopters into the Atlantic ocean. From a thousand metres in the air. He knew, and that makes him a participant.

    • McSwagg

It’s curious that the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (i.e. the Inquisition) is so incurious about that specific topic.

  • Todd20036

And we will build on that.

Lets make 2018 a year of outright lies, innuendoes, and perjury just so we can keep grifting the gullible while fucking their children!

    • LesbianTippingHabits

Quite sadly, you are quite correct. With best wishes for 2018.

  • LesbianTippingHabits

Well, what I remember from the Vatican and 2017 is His Holiness the Pope’s choice to accept an admitted adulteress, Callista Gingrich, as U.S. Ambassador.

Yes, I understand forgiveness, etc., but still. Thank you, and best for 2018.

All of us – and the world – will need positive energy and good karma – supported by tipping generously for good service – in the New Year.

    • andrew

The fact that Francis accepted the credentials of the totally inexperienced Callista Gingrich and just a couple of years ago refused to accept the credential of Laurent Stefanini, a real French diplomat with experience at the U.N., in France and even as a former counselor in the French Embassy in the Vatican, because he is a gay man in a same sex marriage, shows the pope’s actions to be totally hypocritical.

      • LesbianTippingHabits

Perhaps this is the soft bigotry of low expectations, both for Ambassador Callista Gingrich, and for the President who appointed her.

  • bkmn

Well you can always try to do better Frankie.

For Catholic queer sisters and brothers reading here (I’m not Catholic but my husband is), some good news:

I’m not catholic at all and believe organized religions are FAKE NEWS. But, i’m all in favor of anyone causing their followers (who may support Trump or others who are of his ilk) to think carefully about how they have brought injustice and inequity to the world. Maybe, just maybe, his words will persuade some of his followers to be kinder and more considerate of others.

    • ChrisMorley

Black and Hispanic US voters need no instruction from the Pope. Mostly they voted Clinton.
The majority of white US catholics voted tRump.
The US Catholic Bishops chose to embrace the homophobic evangelicals and preached ‘life’ which is a white catholic dogwhistle to support the GOP.

      • another_steve

Here in the states there’s a big disconnect between Catholics in the pews and their church hierarchy. Poll after poll has shown majority support among American Catholics for marriage equality and LGBT equality in general.

This is little known among most people. I know only because I’m married to a Catholic activist who’s very involved in social justice issues within the broader church.

Anyone interested can google for the polling numbers.

  • Ninja0980

Yup, and in many areas, the Church helped that along.

  • Joe in PA

O/T…did anyone watch AMJoy’s year-in-review today? I got about 20 mins in and had to stop…way too depressing. I haven’t forgotten any of it. Sigh.

    • another_steve

Didn’t see her “Year in Review” thing, but I’ve happened upon others by other cable news commentators and they’re all too depressing to endure for more than a few moments.

Politically, 2017 in America was (to use a descriptor made famous by Queen Elizabeth ll) an annus horribilis.

    • Lazycrockett

Thank god the number one story was the resistance. Ending it with the March on DC and the sister marches across the nation at the least made me put the razors away.

        • clay

What are you seeing in the news that’s not getting covered? The final mixed-sex orgy night to close Chicago’s “Man’s Country”? It’s a Sunday; don’t expect much news but politics.

          • Tesauro

Plenty. Just compare it with Towleroad or Pink News. That said, Joe can publish whatever he wants, I respect that. And it’s not just Sundays. 90% of the posts are non-LGBT news. Mostly about the President.

          • John Ruff

You’ve got a point. Little sick of seeing trumpf

          • clay

Towleroad– 50% about Trump, 50% fluff pieces.
Pink News, based in the UK– still 50% about Trump, 50% stories covered by Joe or outside his guidelines on crime coverage.
Joe.My.God.– slightly over 50% about Trump.

          • Tesauro

            No.

          • clay

Yeah, I just looked at the numbers, those are accurate.

          • Tesauro

Of the latest 20 posts on Towleroad 13 are related to LGBT issues and 7 are not.
On Joe My God o f the latest 20 posts 3 are LGBT related news, 17 are non-LGBT news.

          • clay

Trump and Pence ARE LGBT related news.
And by your own (moving goal-posts) numbers, that’s STILL not 90% Trump on JMG.

          • Tesauro

They are when it’s about LGBT policies.

          • Tesauro

The irony is that by reading this blog you would hardly know this administration is anti-gay.

          • Silver Badger

The comments are a large part of the blog. Read the whole thing and you can’t much doubt that JMG is gay oriented,

          • andrew

You’ve got to be kidding. JMG has constantly shined the light on the anti-LGBT actions of the Trump Administration.

          • Tesauro

            Again, that’s not the point.

          • andrew

            What is the point?

          • Tesauro

This blog is not about LGBT issues anymore. Legitimately, I should add.

          • andrew

What is your real issue with this blog?

          • Tesauro

No issue. I used to love it when it was about LGBT news. But I respect the decisions of its owner and the opinions of the readers.

          • Silver Badger

Perhaps your definition if LGBT news is too narrow.

          • Tesauro

My definition of LGBT news is LGBT news.

          • Reality.Bites

            OK, you’re insane.

          • Tesauro

Why do you people like to attack gay people so much? So much sourness, so much spite.

          • Silver Badger

Many issues affect both straight and LGBT people. We have much more in common then either group likes to admit. The current illegitimate president is a threat to all life on earth.

          • Tesauro

It’s not just about the President. And again: You can read that everywhere. If LGBT blogs don’t talk about LGBT issues who will?

          • Silver Badger

You can’t read the gay slant on most issues anywhere but gay blogs. I scan a fair number, but I’m more comfortable here then any of the others.

          • Tesauro

            Hardly.

          • Silver Badger

Your reply does not compute. Reboot

          • netxtown

Well quite obviously the right wingers do!

          • another_steve

Trump and his Administration are a clear and present danger to the LGBT community. Literally, not figuratively.

Joe recognizes that, which is why (I think) he devotes so much blog space to it.

          • Tesauro

Again, you ca read that everywhere. It would be different if it was about anti-LGBT policies enacted by the Administration .

          • another_steve

            I get your point.

A lot of it imo is about providing a venue for LGBT people to vent. I do a lot of anti-Trump venting myself, here.

Venting is good. I applaud Joe for providing the space for it.

          • Tesauro

You can do that everywhere. And it’s not just about the administration.

          • David Walker

Sorry to ask the obvious, but why, then, are you here? If you feel better served by other sites, enjoy. What I don’t understand is why you feel JMG should be tailored to fit your needs and your needs alone. Those of us who are here have found a good mixture of content. And, I think, most of us who are interested in news know news sites exist.

          • Tesauro

I only asked a question. I think it’s sad how the LGBT media is disappearing.

          • clay

and bars, and bathhouses, and neighborhoods, and . . .

          • Silver Badger

OMG, you mean we are assimilating?

          • Tesauro

Yeah right. Because homophobia doesn’t exist anymore so no need to report on it.

          • clay

            What reporting is being missed?
Joe has particular standards about crime reporting, for good reason.

          • PickyPecker

I’m sensing circular logic and repetitious themes.

          • Silver Badger

We do. That’s why were here. To each his own. If you are not comfortable here, there are other sites. If the very few rules bother you, go elsewhere. Without exception, we are here because we want to be.

          • Tesauro

Of course, I didn’t mean to disrespect anyone.

          • clay

            I have, see above.

          • Tesauro

            Nope. Happy new year.

          • David Walker

OK. Homophobia exists. Joe has reported on attacks that other outlets have not…and frequently follows up months later with court results. If you prefer a site whose purpose is to make us constantly on edge, watching out for all those straight people because you just never know, find one or start one. PGN has a website. Washington Blade. Most gay news outlets have one. But I like the way Joe handles things, mixes well, lets us have an opportunity to comment on the fucking moron and other things with little fear of being bashed by bully users of the “alt-right” persuasion. Sorry, but I can’t be sympathetic to your whining when you won’t accept what we’re telling you. HNY.

          • Tesauro

“lets us have an opportunity to comment on the fucking moron and other things with little fear of being bashed by bully users ”
            I understand that.
            It’s not just about crime.
            It’s possible to have both.

          • David Walker

One last try and then I have to go. Homophobia is an on-going thing. We know that and when something blatant happens, we read about it here, and we read about it here because more than likely other news sites won’t say shit about it. FRC, AFC, NOM, and others are very good at manufacturing reasons to hate us on a daily basis…it pays so they continue to manufacture lies. They are xn sites that have very little to do with xnty and a lot to do with raising money for themselves. JMG is an LGBT site. He keeps us up-to-date on what the haters and phobes are up to. It is not constant. There is a variety to life that is reflected on this site. I don’t see what’s wrong with that. Even a section like “Today in Homophobia” probably couldn’t appear daily. Now, I really do have to go, so please stay safe…and if you’re in the deep freeze, stay warm and bundle up if you go outside.

          • Tesauro

There’s nothing “wrong” with that. But it’s not how it used to be. LGBT media is disappearing.

          • Reality.Bites

All news media are disappearing. Surprising how that happens when no one wants to pay for it

          • David Walker

…and I sometimes miss feeling like an outlaw. I mean, yes, I’m (we’re) still second class citizens, but there was a time when…oh, never mind.

          • another_steve

I think I hear ya, David.

This isn’t necessarily a PC thing to discuss… but yes, there was a time back in the 60s and 70s when we were still outlaws.

            And it was exciting.

          • David Walker

It was, wasn’t it? Especially in the ’70s, the whole suddenly free, sexual outlaw thing. There are times when I don’t much care for this aging thing, but it means that I’m old enough to remember (and to have participated in) (somewhat) that literal liberation. It also means I’m old enough to remember the next decade, but to have lived through pre-Stonewall, the liberated ’70s, and the devastating ’80s as gay men is something to be proud of…and also humbling. And I’m not even drunk yet.

          • another_steve

            Yes, David. Humbling.

An amazing period in the evolution of the human consciousness, and we were privileged – lucky enough – to have lived through it.

          • McSwagg

There are still many states where those old laws criminalizing us are still on the books. On occasion, some back woods sheriff will try to use them to harass us even though he knows it will be thrown out of court. He’ll get an “atta-boy” slap on the back from his posse for sticking it to the queers. As long as those laws remain on the books, we’re second class citizens.

          • andrew

I think that you are just playing a game here, because your criticism of this blog are not reality based.

          • Tesauro

17 post out of 20 are non-LGBT related. LGBT media is disappearing.

          • zhera

Oh, FFS. Start your own damn LGBT blog, then!

            /fresh out of patience

          • Reality.Bites

Are you upset he hasn’t made enough of them?

          • andrew

Every issue is an LGBT issue. We live in this world and are not only interested in what’s happening in the gayborhood. We are interested in all the issues that effect us.

          • Tesauro

Yeah. That’s why news sites exist.

          • andrew

Often the major news sites don’t discuss the issues and their impact on the LGBT community. That’s where blogs like this one fill in the gaps.

          • Tesauro

That’s the point! Neither does this site.

          • PickyPecker

Analysis of story content is usually conducted within the comments section, where you can learn a LOT.

          • andrew

If you actually follow JMG blog and don’t see that it discusses the many issues that effect the LGBT community, a course in reading comprehension may help you.

          • netxtown

And! many, many times during the course of any thread – you will find outside parts n pieces pulled in to bringa better understanding to some aspects. Such as – how a court case from 30 years ago is relative to a court case from 10 years ago to now.

          • Tesauro

Of the latest 20 post 17 are about non-LGBT related issues.

          • netxtown

Well – he must be doing something right cuz the overwhelming majority ain’t bitchin about it.

          • Tesauro

Fair enough. But we as a community might regret it later.

          • netxtown

Is this a case of ‘if momma ain’t happy, nobody is happy’?

          • Tesauro

            Thank you for your time.

          • netxtown

well damn. you’ve taken up 20 feet of of space – and still it just ain’t enough for you. WTF do you want? you can lament all you want – but the bottom lines are: #1 It’s Joe’s blog. #2 It’s Joe’s blog. That should just about cover it.

          • netxtown

but what if we don’t regret it. Will we regret not regretting?

          • Reality.Bites

You are not part of any community I’m part of.

          • andrew

There are few of the last 20 posts that are “non-LGBT related issues.” By my count 15 of them discuss issues that have a direct impact on LGBT people. You seem to have a very narrow view of just what LGBT issues are.

          • Tesauro

LOL With this logic everything has have a direct impact on LGBT people. That’s why I read MAINSTREAM media.

          • zhera

Did you come on to Joe and he rejected you? Is that it? Are you a bitter troll looking for attention?

          • Tesauro

            Why so much sourness?

          • zhera

Because I’ve read all your comments here and you are the definition of a troll. Bye bye.

          • Tesauro

Yeah, I’m a troll because I said on an LGBT blog I wished there was more focus on LGBT issues and more LGBT representation in the media.

          • JCF
          • Silver Badger

Yes, it does. Just not in the way you are looking for.

          • Tesauro

            Not really. Not much.

          • netxtown

Joe doesn’t spell everything out in Romper Room lingo. Critical thinking, deductive reasoning – with a healthy dose of paranoia tossed in from time to time…keeps discussions lively and stirring!

          • PickyPecker
          • netxtown

i gather you don’t see donnie as a threat to our communities? Well, by all means, roll that trojan jackass right in to town!

          • Tesauro

You know what would be useful? An LGBT site that explains why he is a threat.

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

Oh honey, just admit what it is you’re really looking for: an Echo Chamber.

          • andrew

Read this blog regularly and you will be inundated with info about why Trump is a threat to LGBT people and indeed to our nation and the world.

          • netxtown

A vicious dog barreling towards you with teeth bared – and you want to understand why he is a threat?

          • Boreal

So what you’re saying is you are too dumb to figure it out yourself and need someone to explain it for you? The more likely explanation is you are just a shitty and inept troll.

          • Stogiebear
          • Jean-Marc in Canada

You mean the president who has been systematically dismantling the LGBT gains made under Obama. Yeah, I can see how that’s totally not relevant to an LGBT blog. Fuck off.

          • Tesauro

That would be related, of course. But most of the post about the administration are not.

    • another_steve

Um, pal… You believe, perhaps, that there are no Catholic LGBT people?

Ever been to a Pride Parade?

      Catholic contingents galore. 😉

      • Tesauro

Of course. But they can read that everywhere. Again, the owner of this publication can publish whatever he wants. But it’s a bit disappointing how the LGBT media is disappearing.

        • Chucktech

You must not be a regular here.

          • Tesauro

            I used to be.

          • Ninja0980

Only have 275 posts..must have not been a long time regular.

          • Tesauro

If you must know the account is new. I read this blog since 2008.

          • TuuxKabin

And you, let me guess, moved from Dallas to Palm Springs.

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

AHA! It’s BP disguised as a Russiabot!

        • another_steve

Well, Blogmeister Joe has a particular “vendetta,” shall we say, when it comes to institutional religion in general and Catholicism in particular. Understandable to a degree, imo. Institutional religion is the major cause of homophobia in the world today. Joe’s happy when he can paint religion in a bad light.

It’s his blog. He’s free to focus on whatever he chooses to. I have issues with some of the broadbrush religion-hate on JMG, but it’s Joe’s blog and I’m only his guest.

          • Tesauro

            That’s not the point.

          • PickyPecker

Stevela, hon….make sure your napkin is in your lap this afternoon. A good guest makes no mess.

        • netxtown

oh, it is plenty gay around here. Plenty gay.

          • Tesauro

            Factually wrong.

          • netxtown

well – you’re working with a group of folks who love gay sex – and also use their other heads as well. An “issue” doesn’t have to be 1-to-1 LGBT to have an impact. ya know like – ACA? Taxes? Judges? etc…. There is a ton of shit out their in the world that doesn’t have a rainbow label on it yet it will still splatter on us. yes, it’s a bit broader reach than Towleroad – and that is Andy’s prerogative. We don’t all have to look the same.

          • Tesauro

You have mainstream media for that. If LGBT sites don’t care for LGBT issues who will?

          • Jean-Marc in Canada
          • netxtown

Because we are humans first, men and women second, and LGBT from there.

          • Tesauro

Sure. That’s why I read mainstream media first and I would like to read LGBT media second. Too bad the second one is disappearing.

          • netxtown

So – just accept that life is unfair, the world is not the way you think it should be, and vote rethug next year. maybe then you will be happy.

          • netxtown

So what you are really saying is that you are unhappy with Towleroad’s coverage of LGBT issues….

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

            Yes, yes you are.

          • another_steve

I’m so gay that, in the springtime, daffodils blow me kisses as I walk by.

That photo of Trump on the golf course with his rear-end stained white pants turned me straight for five days.

It was only due to the kindness of my friends here on JMG – who proceeded to post pics of hunky guys for me – that I recovered my queerness.

        • JDS

He states all that stuff, then becomes a Dancing Queen with partners.

  • Sporkfighter

    He would know, wouldn’t he?

  • Tempus Fuggit

Well. If anybody ought to know about lies and injustices, it’s the Catholic Church.

  • andrew

As the leader of an organization based on ancient biblical myths, your opinions are already on shaky ground. When your organization preaches against contraceptives which help limit the population in an already overpopulated world and which help limit the spread of HIV and when your organization covers up the sexual abuse of minors by it’s priests, in order to protect it’s image, your opinions fail to matter very much.

    • Chucktech

They don’t merely preach against contraceptives, they spread the vicious lie to people in Africa that condom use helps spread the HIV virus. That is utterly breathtakingly evil.

    • Liz Burnside

That’s why I left the Catholic church. Every time I went to mass, the priest was going on and on about Contraceptives! Abortions! Gay sex! (didn’t have too much to say about hetero sex, I noticed, probably because it would piss everybody off) Anyway, here’s all these celibate guys, and they can’t get their minds off what they can’t have. Pathetic. And all too telling.

      • Todd20036

Especially when HIV can be controllable.

Meanwhile the church wants you to have kids, but doesn’t want to help pay for their care.

        • Librarykid

and does not protect the children you entrust to its care.

      • JWC

Have you ever noticed how close in spelling and how easily misinturpitated the words celibate and celebrate are

      • Steve Teeter

Stephen Fry said that the only people who are truly obsessed about food are anorexics and the morbidly obese. And that that sums up the Catholic Church’s attitude toward sex in a nutshell.

    • Galvestonian

There’s a lot of American Catholics out there and they vote. I’m sure that quite a few of them are Republican. If there’s any way this Pope can influence voters in turning against Republicans and the Trumpster then he needs to say so in the strongest terms possible. There won’t be any America for anybody in any religion, or any belief if this monster runs for 8 full years.

      • joe ho

60% of white Catholics voted for Trump despite the pope’s clear opposition to him. Nothing he can say will change their minds. Catholics only have to listen to the pope in matters of theology. That’s the only area where he is considered “infallible.”

        • andrew

In the last five presidential elections Obama was the Democrat who got the highest percentage of the white Catholic vote. In 2000 Gore got 45%, In 2004 Kerry got 43%, In 2008 Obama got 47% of that vote, but slipped to 40% in 2012. Hillary got an even smaller white Catholic vote at 37%. That is a large segment of the U.S. electorate that the Democrats have to work harder at attracting. The Democratic support from Hispanic Catholics is much more encouraging. In the last five presidential elections the lowest percentage of the Hispanic Catholic vote that the Democrat received was 65%.

          • killreligion

That someone can even be catholic today tells you what gullible simpletons people can be. We would be better off working to end religion and their brainwashing then to get them to follow a particular party. Then they might learn to think for themselves.

          • andrew

Baby steps. Right now it is more important to convince religious believers to vote Democrat 2018 and in 2020.

          • killreligion

I’m not a member of parties but this year it is the right move, I agree

(Well ok last year too, and then voting for the first black president was such a thrill/honor, but none of those were party votes for me)

      • zhera

They will do as all religious people do: Ignore the calls to do good deeds they don’t want to do (help the poor), and keep on justifying their bigotry in ancient scriptures. Religion is a shield and a spear, not a stepping stone.

        • McSwagg

They do have those “armor of god” verses they so like to chant.

Since this is a thread dealing with religion, I should point out that one can sing “Amazing Grace” to this tune, and the repeat becomes very poignant. (About 6 months poignant, but that’s a different story.)

          • BearEyes

Agree 100% – we need to put pressure on our NALT (not all like that) Christian friends to start calling out the wolves in their own herd. There is no reason our NALT friends should be allowing the Tony Duggar PerKKKins, Brian Browns, Bryan Fissures and others to get away with what is plainly not the behaviors of someone who is following Christ’s teachings.

      • killreligion

None of them are following christs teachings since he is made up. They are being true christians as what we see is what it was intended to be

  • Halou

He’s not wrong, but he’s the wrong person to say it.

I agree with you, Mr. Popey, but your Church has been lying to the world for two millennia. Pot and kettle, ya know?

  • Tomcat

OT: just once I would love to see on one of those commercials where the guy says I got a real good deal on inflatable snowman on good Friday and the other man has to show him up by saying, yeah I got a great deal too as he points to his new truck, Just once I want the first man to say yeah and I got this great deal to bring it home in and points to a brand new big wheels high rider truck. And then say fuck off.

While I agree with about everything else said in the other comments here, the fact remains that what he is saying is altogether true.

    • Natty Enquirer

      Platitudes generally are.

    • BearEyes

he’s also being somewhat vague – kind of like a fortune cookie – seems like it’s “truthiness”, but when you break it down, there’s not much in the way of detail or substance – despite all the lies and crap in 2017.

      • Natty Enquirer

Same shtick as the Dalai Lama.

    • JAKvirginia

Well, yes. But I’d feel better if he criticized the transgressors as it happens instead of a not-naming-names year-end wrap-up. Someone’s got to be the nasty prick and call them out, y’know?

      (Guess that’s our job. Sigh.)

      • David Walker

But that might mean a decrease in tithes from the offended, so don’t expect it from any religious group.

        • JAKvirginia

You’re so right. Follow the money. Religion is big business. I keep forgetting that. Sorry.

          • David Walker

    • Lazycrockett

The Catholic church has been going after Peter for decades.

    • MaryJOGrady

Mr. Bergoglio may well be the last. By the time he goes, nobody may be taking it all seriously enough to throw another conclave.

  • Will Parkinson

Yep, and he helped propagate a lot of them himself.

  • Blake J Butler

So now the bern king Shaun King doesn’t like the purity politics he ironically plays on a regular basis, but thinks its asinine for progressive to play them, since they played a role in the Atlanta mayoral election between establishment choice Bottoms versus Norwood. An election that easily could have gone the other direction. That was what brought the realization to light not the fact that we could have had a compassionate policy wonk in the oval office, instead of a demented, fascist, demagogue.

Damn that is rich, since he downplayed Northam in the gubernatorial election since Perriello lost and threw a temper tantrum progressive bern bots are known to throw when they don’t get their way.

    • Lazycrockett

What a shitty movie that was.

      • That_Looks_Delicious

Just about EVERY movie based on a 60s/70s TV show was absolutely awful. The only exceptions seem to be Addams Family movies, which were brilliant, but quite different from the original show.

        • Reality.Bites

Which of course was not an original show, but was based on Charles Addams’s cartoons.

I enjoyed the Brady Bunch movies, which gave us more laughs in four hours than the TV show fave us in however many years it lasted.

      • Lumpy Gaga

I love Pfeiffer. Don’t recognize this film?

  • Dayglo

I’m an atheist yet it feels as though I’m constantly being schooled by “holy” people. Whatever.

  • Moebym of the Returners

OT: After today’s shitty news I don’t know how I could possibly trust another person ever again.

The woman who told me yesterday that I could bring the cat home today messaged me this morning to inform me that she was giving both of them to a friend after all because she only just found out from her vet *this morning*, after having them for all that time, that it’d be cruel to separate the two. Like, if you had any hesitation about rehoming your cats or separating them, don’t fucking lead other people on.

I can’t blame any of you for believing that I’m fibbing about this whole debacle, but it’s the gospel truth.

    • Treant

I would have used the word “pussy” in a pejorative manner. But we’ve already established that I am not a nice person.

Sorry that happened to you, MotR! Have you considered going to the ASPCA instead? There are always (sadly) unwanted kittens that are turned in after Christmas. It would be a kindness to take one of those and give him or her a good home.

      • Moebym of the Returners

I’m trying so hard not to be angry at this person because she probably did want the cats to stay together, and that was probably for the best anyway. She just didn’t have to go about it this way, is all.

We weren’t really looking to get another cat, but this opportunity was just too good. Now that it’s gone we’ll definitely be keeping an eye on the local shelters and rescues.

        • zhera

It sounds to me like she was trying to milk you. Maybe get (more) money? I dunno, could be I’m cynical.

There are tons of homeless cats out there. Your perfect new kitty friend is out there!

          • Moebym of the Returners

It didn’t seem to be about the money. There was no mention of it during our conversation.

          • Ragnar Lothbrok

She probably would have would have waited a week after you bonded with the new kitty to announce she changed her mind and will make a federal case out of it.

    • JAKvirginia

Moebym? This group has seen more deceitful shit than you can possibly imagine. There is no reason not to believe you. But your goal is a sweet furry companion. Forget this bitch and go find them. They’re waiting for you. Hugs.

    • Gretchen

I wish you lived nearby; I know of a rescue kitty in need of a home right now. I don’t think any of us have any reason to doubt you, but if you get that vibe it might be because a very similar thing recently happened to some famous person on Twitter (I don’t remember who it was). The man was actually told he could have the cat until the lady found out he was gay and then suddenly she decided she couldn’t give it him for whatever nonsense. It sounds to me like the world is full of mean old cat ladies.

      • Moebym of the Returners

I guess you know that I’m in Vegas, then. Thank you for letting me know, though – I’d have definitely taken you up on it.

      • Reality.Bites

Not even close. I will make a prediction though: it will never post on a thread that’s about LGBT issues. It will return time and again to complain about the lack of LGBT content.

In general that’s a good way to spot trolls. None of them – including this one – are even remotely interested in the LGBT content.

One can be sure if one offered this one the chance to discuss for real on the LGBT topic of its choice it would have nothing to say. Trolls aren’t interested in conversation. Ever.

They didn’t buy anything. Those lies were manufactured in house.

      • Boreal

Well they do have subsidiaries like Bill Donahue and Brian Brownshirt.

  • Mikey

wait, is the Pope apologizing for all of the Catholic Church’s lies and injustices?

    • David Walker

Confession is supposed to be good for the soul.

      • Mikey

you have to have a soul for that, however.

        • David Walker

Perhaps his popeness still has a receipt.

    • MaryJOGrady

Not exactly. Many First Nations survivors of mission schools in Canada, and survivors of Native American mission schools in the US, would be glad of such an apology, I think.

  • Ninja0980

I love the block feature don’t you?

    • Treant

I’ve always loved playing with blocks.

      • Boreal

I liked Lincoln logs but to build a really stylish gay house, you needed an expansion set.

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

Remember, churches would have no power if nobody ever attended/tithed.

    • MaryJOGrady

Actually, tithing is not required in the Roman Catholic Church. Canon law decrees that every Catholic must “contribute to the support of the church,” but *no one* is allowed to say how much, or how often.
When my mother, devout to the point of fanaticism, died at the age of 89 in 2010, our whole family was curious about how much money her will would give to the church. When her will was opened, the answer came: not one dime. (I think there are many pious old ladies like her all over the world, and the Vatican is in for some considerable belt-tightening.)

      • Reality.Bites

        Any speculation why she didn’t?

        • MaryJOGrady

She was an alumna of St. Benedict’s College in Minnesota. The nearby men’s college. St. John’s, and attached boys’ high school have been in the courts for decades now over a whole lot of really egregious and loathsome sexual abuse. I am sure she was aware of that, and of the hundreds of thousands of dollars paid out in settlements to survivors of sexual abuse in her home diocese, and she did not want her money being used to get abusers off the hook.

          • Reality.Bites

Good reason. Of course she may well have always intended her money to go wherever it went.

          • MaryJOGrady

Without the worldwide clerical child sexual abuse scandals, I really think it would all have gone to her Holy Mother Church.

  • Adam King

Mr. Bergoglio isn’t wrong. Now let him correct the lies and injustices he presides over.

Right, like you have nothing to do with it. You’re perfectly fine as long as you’re keeping a smile on your face while you stab people in the back.

  • Marlin

i rate the Pope with Republicans who put out self-serving ‘fair’ crap then turn around and do just the opposite.

  • In other words, Donald Trump was President of the USA in 2017. Just come out and say it! Why beat around the bush?

Because he wants Hispanic Americans to think he’s on their side without offending all the right wing white Catholics out there, probably.

How many recent popes have agreed that child abuse is deplorable, yet did very little to stop it?

Hey, Pope, maybe you wanna check out that big fat beam in your eye before commenting on the motes of others.

    • MaryJOGrady

Even John XXIII, “Good Pope John,” was an enabler. I wanted to vomit when I read documentation of that.
It’s a racket that has gone on for centuries.

OT: 13° and dropping. The sun doesn’t set for another 45 minutes.

I’ve shut the shades just in case the atmosphere freezes. That should give us another five, ten seconds to live.

    • another_steve

My indoor geraniums have stopped blooming.

      They’re in shock.

      • Treant

Understandable. Try moving them away from the windows a bit to increase the temperature, placing them on wet pebble beds to increase humidity, and enhance the now lower light with fluorescent or LED lighting. Incandescent can be used, and the heat will certainly help out, but it’s inefficient in terms of PAR (Plant Available Radiation).

I have a very unhappy ageratum on the windowsill at the moment; the temperature of the glass is falling below freezing.

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

Open the shades. If you are to go, you will want to go fast.

( I am actually worried about underground pipes freezing. Not enough snow cover to insulate them from this prolonged arctic air )

Ditto. I drained and shut down all the outside faucets, but…

We have seven days of this to go through. At least.

With all due respect to Pope Francis, what does he have to offer that this man does not?

    • The_Wretched

I’d rather spend a couple of hours with that guy than the pope.

      • another_steve

I can assure you that I’d experience more mystical ecstasy in the presence of that guy than I would in the presence of the Pope.

      • That_Looks_Delicious

I wouldn’t. Really hot guys are good for 30 minutes to an hour, and not because of their conversational skills. My experience is that most of them are dumber than a box of rocks and vain to boot. Although they do have their plusses.

Whatever one’s feelings towards the church, the current Pope has been one of the most insightful and thought-provoking public figures of our time. He’s one of the very few major public figures currently that would probably meet Fran Lebowitz’s test for being a dinner party guest. Almost everybody else in politics, movies, music, sports, etc. in this age of idiocracy are over-rated Kardashians.

        I miss intelligence.

        • The_Wretched

I like really long deep tissue muscle rubs. He doesn’t have to talk.

  • David Kerlick

65% of Roman Catholic men voted for Trump because their priests tell them that government prohibition of abortion is the only issue.

    • Reality.Bites

The overwhelming majority of people who call themselves Catholics on polls don’t attend church from one year to the next.

These Roman Catholic men voting for Trump are overwhelmingly older straight white men lacking a university education and racist as fuck – always were, now they can glory in it. Whether they’re nominally protestant or nominally Catholic has nothing to do with their voting patterns.

At a certain point one ticks so many boxes that it becomes inconceivable to have one thing diametrically opposed.

Like the poster whose name is something like Black Vegan Gay Atheist. While it’s conceivable he could be one of those things and a Republican and shocking but not impossible to be two of them and a Republican, but after that we’re dealing with statistical improbabilities that make existence unlikely.

OT – Someone just told me that they had 75″ of snow in NW PA and my PA co-workers confirmed this.

    • Treant

What they’re not telling you is that this is completely normal for lake-effect snows from a sudden cold snap. Once Lake Erie freezes over, no more lake effect snow.

We even saw a little out here in eastern PA! Fifty MPH winds will blow it that far…

      • That_Looks_Delicious

I’m originally from Northern Ohio, so I remember lake effect snow… But 75″?!

        • Treant

Buffalo, NY. Copenhagen, NY, and Erie, PA. They’re famous for amounts like that.

While 75″ is a little extreme, all at once, Copenhagen did get 12″ an hour in one storm.

Didn’t you slip Kim Davis the Holy Bologna when you met with her and congratulated her on fighting LGBT rights? Those were my rights.

Did you ever pay reparations to any of the indigenous people of Africa and the Americas whose lands were stolen by your vile Missionaries in exchange for an ersatz deity that left them impoverished and humiliated?

      Thank you.

I truly hated 2017 and was delighted to see it go.

As everyone was setting off fireworks for the end of the year, I was trying to scrape the last of it from my shoes. It was a horrible, horrible, horrible year for me personally.

Where everyone ese was leaving mince pies, carrots and a schooner of sherry for Santa Claus for Christmas, I was placing a quart of vodka, sleeping pills, an elegantly placed pearl-handled revolver and a delightfully arranged, silken hangman’s noose from the ceiling for the end of last year.

And in 2018, I woke to this music.

I’ve spent the entire morning dancing.

I cranked up the sound on my computer and I’ve done all the washing up, I’ve hoovered the place. I’ve stuck a load of stuff in the washing machine – including all my late dog’s bedding, which I’ve not been able to touch for a couple of days, and wiped a load of dust from my TV, mirrors and computer screens.

My first morning in 2018 has been happy, joyful and sorting out the detritus of 2017.

Long story short, thank you. A massive thank you.

Old man shouts at cloud. Old irrelevant virgin (unless he raped kids and we haven’t heard about it) shouts at cloud.

Like all panderers, he blathers at society in general instead of the politicians leading countries. Rail against and criticize the ones you shake hands with if you want to gain some credibility.
