2017 In Memoriam: Television, Movies, Music [VIDEO]

Variety reports:

The world of TV had a rough year in 2017, with the death of the beloved Mary Tyler Moore hitting hard. TV’s Batman, Adam West, Jim Nabors of “Gomer Pyle,” Della Reese of “Touched by an Angel” and “The Partridge Family’s” David Cassidy were among other TV notables who died this year.

It was a sad year for music lovers in 2017, with the loss of rock ‘n’ roll pioneers Fats Domino and Chuck Berry, rock legends Tom Petty and Gregg Allman, and the shocking deaths of Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell and Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington.

The past year saw the loss of some renowned character actors, including John Hurt, Bill Paxton and Harry Dean Stanton. We were both shaken and stirred by the death of Roger Moore, who played James Bond more than any other actor. On the other side of the camera, directors Jonathan Demme as well as horror masters Tobe Hooper and George A. Romero died in 2017.

Many other notable passings are commemorated in the clips below. The final clip is the Daily Show‘s farewell to those who lost their careers in this year’s tsunami of sexual misconduct allegations.

    Honesty in the Presidency: RIP.

    • DaddyRay

Americas standing in the World: RIP

  • Bambino

One day left, I still have hope the dotard will be tag into those videos.

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

It’s good to have HOPE !

    • William

So long as it is a humiliating departure.

    • Boreal

I want him to be totally incapacitated by a stroke………………for the rest of his short life.

    • M Jackson

It would lend such a positive note of hope amidst the sadness.

    • Lakeview Bob

I wake up every morning and turn on MSNBC hoping to hear that the Furor had a stroke and died over night. And the disappointment ruins the rest of the day. One day the sun will shine again for the right minded people out there.

      • Bambino

I won’t bother turning on the television. But if you hear the sounds of cars honking all over driving through the streets that is the time you check for news.

      • joeyj1220

It’s unfathomable to me how someone in his shape, at his age, with such lousy lifestyle habits has managed to stick around so long. At this point, I’d just be happy to turn on MSNBC and find that he’s simply fallen down a flight of stairs and broken some bones.

  • Treant

2017 still has a day and a half to redeem itself. Melanoma’s implants could spontaneously combust, killing Dumpster, Pence, Mother, and the Republican Senators and right-wing Supreme Court Justices at a last-minute year-end party.

    • Bambino

I can see Pence choking on pretzels during the eve party when the dotard feel up his mother.

      • JAKvirginia

        Okay….. ewwwwwww… .

      • joeyj1220

        she’s way too old

    • lymis

Honestly, I’d think it would be more fun watching the Dowager Trump battling the Trumpspawn in both the courts and the tabloids for the next 20 years.

So maybe something else could spontaneously combust instead? Like Trump’s ego?

      • Treant

Or his synthetic hair and teeth…

  • bkmn

2017 was a real bitch, so we had better grab 2018 and change it for the better.

  • PickyPecker
    • Bambino

Fresh start as in opening a new bottle? Sure.

    • TominDC

      Fresh *start*?

Pfft! You won’t need to re-start if you never stop!

    • Boreal

Major slacking off day. 5F here. Fire blazing. Almost time for a tipple of bourbon followed by a good beer and then a nap with my puppy.

      • Mihangel apYrs

one of my friends says that puppies are young men who dress in a certain (limited) way and play with toys, go around on leads, and . . .

        • Boreal

          Yeah this one is canid.

          • Mihangel apYrs

            well, not that I don’t believe you, but . . .
            🙂

O/T: America and the Great Abdication

Richard Haass: “When great powers fade, as they inevitably must, it’s normally for one of two reasons. Some powers exhaust themselves through overreach abroad, underinvestment at home, or a mixture of the two. This was the case for the Soviet Union. Other powers lose their privileged position with the emergence of new, stronger powers. This describes what happened with France and Great Britain in the case of Germany’s emergence after World War I and, more benignly, with the European powers and the rise of the United States during and after World War II.”

“To some extent America is facing a version of this—amid what Fareed Zakaria has dubbed “the rise of the rest”—with China’s ascendance the most significant development. But the United States has now introduced a third means by which a major power forfeits international advantage. It is abdication, the voluntary relinquishing of power and responsibility. It is brought about more by choice than by circumstances either at home or abroad.”

    https://politicalwire.com/2017/12/30/america-great-abdication/

I tell you that it is being brought about by TREASON and ROBBERY, and by the failure of institutions and a people to stand up to LIARS and INFAMY!

THAT is the simple, shameful TRUTH of it!!

That is the DISGRACE of it!!

We are gathered together at the edge of the precipice.

Happy New Year to you and the dear husbear, Bill❗️

  • DaddyRay

I noticed the Fox In Memoriam included Edith Windsor

    • Bambino

Shepard Smith was allow to name one.

    • DaddyRay

NBC also included Edith but I was surprised to see Fox did

    • Bert_Bauer

And Gilbert Baker, too … somebody’s asleep at the switch!

  • Treant

This is too funny. Can we simply replace him all around?

    • Lazycrockett

and now women are making humorous cameo’s in way too many gay porn clips.

      • Lars Littlefield

Nothing kills the mood for me than a cameo performance by a female in a gay porn video. I like my women bisexual and voracious in bi videos or gang bang spectaculars that have perky Broadway-style musical numbers.

        • JDS

It seems that Men.com have used this trope to many times.

  • M Jackson

    Love you always, Mary.

  • boobert

I can think of more than a few that wouldn’t be missed by me if they joined the list over the next day and a half ! I’m thinking a bolt of lightning at a FL golf club, lol.

  • M Jackson

The weekend of Carrie and Debbie nearly did me in.
I cried harder over Reynolds than anything else since Diana’s funeral in ‘96. My boyfriend was concerned.

    • JohnJay

If you haven’t seen it yet, you should really watch the HBO documentary “Bright Light: Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds.” It shows how they lived the last few years of their lives. How they really came to love and care for each other.

    • Lakeview Bob

I am glad to know that I am not the only one who adored Debbie Reynolds. She was the greatest. Ever.

      • M Jackson

I was honored to meet her twice in the 1980s when I was still performing. She saw a performance I did in Dallas with my jazz quartet and spoke with us at length afterward, and then again several years later when I was pal-ing around with friend Rip Taylor while he was doing a show with her.
I can tell you that she was as generous and warm and funny as you imagine her to be. I’ve never forgotten how kind and supportive she was to me and my group. Treasured moments I’ll always adore.
I miss her just as you do, for so many MGM memories.

  • DaddyRay
  • DumbHairyApe

OT: Hi everybody, I’m cat-sitting! A furry, fun, affectionate beast will be with me for a week while his human companion is off on a trip. Gorillas and kitties make good friends!

    • DaddyRay

I was visiting friends in San Francisco over Christmas and their cat Nigel is the sweetest. He would wake me up every morning with these head butts
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrWAgAfWMag

      • DumbHairyApe

        Oh, that lucky cat!!! 😉

        • DaddyRay

          I was the lucky one

          • DumbHairyApe

I beg to differ, Daddy Ray!

          • DaddyRay

Considering my cat only gives me butts when he climbs up in bed with me

          • DumbHairyApe

Well, this blue-eyed siamese/tabby mix is very affectionate, when he wants to be. I’m often getting head-butts from him and he loves to have his belly rubbed. He’s even okay being held for a bit, but only on his terms. And he purrs, a lot.
It’s funny how for all cats, each has such a different personality.

          • DaddyRay

Wow – the elusive belly rub

          • Mike_in_the_Tundra

Those who like them can be quite demanding.

      • Elsewhere1010

That’s a wonderful video. Of course you realize now that NIgel has marked you with his scent, you are now his.

Ehh… you probably already have an idea how that sort of things works.

      • Reminds me of the Late Great Ben, who was also great at rubbing his chin against me to make sure everyone knew I was his.

      • Cuberly Deux

Watched an episode of Planet Earth II last night. Be thankful Nigel marking you is sweet & fun. Now if he was a snow leopard…yeesh…it’d be a pretty messy business.

        • DaddyRay

Oh I imagine there is a bit of fantasizing going on in his head how he would murder me

          • Cuberly Deux

lol…inside he’s saying…..”I shall spare you, as you give me the foodz.”

    • CanuckDon

I got the kittie…just need that furry beast! (preferably one who just loves to shovel snow)

      • DumbHairyApe

Shoveling snow sounds like fun. Can we build a snow fort to stay warm inside???

        • CanuckDon

It’s been about 45 years since my last snow fort but sure! It’ll be nice and cozy….although too much heat and things will start melting. 😉

  • bkmn

The Daily Beast is not pulling punches in this article about Iflunka –
“Her exits from D.C. were ill-timed, but so were her entrances. The woman is worse at reading cues than a drunken Charlie Rose.”

    https://www.thedailybeast.com/in-a-rough-first-year-as-first-daughter-nevertheless-ivanka-trumps-brand-persisted?source=twitter&via=desktop

    • Cuberly Deux

      HA! Oh my…..you weren’t kidding.

“Her goal is to be a goal, she aspires to be aspirational, a hungry, greedy little pursuit that is so bereft of meaning that it could at any moment collapse upon itself into a bullshit singularity.”

  • JWC

One part of a coming new year is to say good bye to the old . Memorials , such as these, bring to light the many remarkable and personal people, we have lost,Some lived full lives, some taken way to soon but all , in they way enriched our lives. “Ah it was good to know ye”

  • Ninja0980

As long as Betty White stays alive, we’re good.

  • Bert_Bauer
  • Gah! I hadn’t heard that Chester Bennington died.

I’ll have to play all my Linkin Park albums (which is all of them) this weekend.

    • DumbHairyApe

I believe he died in a suicide. Linkin Park released a song in tribute to him.
It’s very touching, have kleenex nearby.

I would add the death of Generalísimo Francisco Franco’s only child, his daughter Carmen – an old hag who lived like a queen and dedicated her life to preserving her wicked father’s FASCIST legacy. She died yesterday.

I’d add her to the list obviously not because I’m sad, but because I’m pleased to know that an important part of the Francoist movement, until now literally a living symbol of fascism, is no more!

Below is one of the last statues of the dictator. It was torn down in 2008 thanks to a law passed the year before by the Spanish Parliament that mandated the removal of public monuments of Franco’s regime. I wish the U.S. Congress could pass a similar law in relation to the Confederacy’s statues or public symbols. *Sigh*

    FVCK FASCISM AND BIGOTRY!

After watching those clips I’m certain some of those actors and sports figures have died at least once before. I’m sure of it.

    • Silver Badger

      Hallelujah! Glory, Glory!

    • houstonray

I was that way on Fats Domino. I SWEAR I remember seeing something about his passing. What do they call that, the Mandela Effect?

  • Mihangel apYrs

    |Too much of my childhood and youth evaporated this year, though that’s a problem with growing old – saying goodbye to the past and friends.

David Cassidy was probably my first real crush as opposed to a wank-fantasy.

  • Artist Bill Sienkiewicz has done a pretty amazing series of images of folks who passed away. Worth a look.

obviously they were on the waiting list from 2016 as it was full.

  • Bj Lincoln

The FOX video has Gilbert Baker, the creator of our beloved flag. I was sure to thank them.
I liked the first video best. Was in tears by the end. I grew up with so many of these people. Some seemed like friends and several were role models for a young woman in the 70’s. The way they ended with Mary was beautiful. This year seemed to hit me harder than usual.

  • eddiebeskeddie

soooooo looking forward to the 3½ second YouTube video that flashes the names : Sessions, Pence, Trump and then fades out into an orange background.

  • DonnaLee

So many here shaped my life growing up. This was truly the year of deaths that hurt for me, including my cat Hampton. He was a beautiful Tabby. I still have his buddy Schmoozy, but Hampton was my baby.
