Pentagon To Provide Ukraine With Anti-Tank Missiles

The Associated Press reports:

Ukraine will soon have more lethal American-made weapons to help it fight Russian-backed separatists. U.S. officials said Friday that the Trump administration approved a plan to provide lethal weapons to Ukraine, in a long-awaited move that deepens America’s involvement in the military conflict and may further strain relations with Russia.

The new arms include American-made Javelin anti-tank missiles that Ukraine has long sought to boost its defenses against Russian-backed separatists armed with tanks that have rolled through eastern Ukraine during violence that has killed more than 10,000 since 2014. Previously, the U.S. has provided Ukraine with support equipment and training, and has let private companies sell some small arms like rifles.

CNN reports:

The State Department said the “US assistance is entirely defensive in nature, and as we have always said, Ukraine is a sovereign country and has a right to defend itself.” Among the weapons being sent are US-made Javelin anti-tank missiles, the official said.

Members of Congress and the US-backed Ukrainian government had long requested anti-tank weapons to boost Kiev in its fight against Russian-backed separatists.

This is another development from the US that Russia is expected to criticize. Some experts told CNN that Russia could use this move as a pretext to take further action in Ukraine, after its invasion and annexation of the Crimea region in 2014.

Putin is an expert at playing the long game.

Putin is all about the LONG game…sadly many American military leaders are not versed in this area

        • Gustav2

They are still fighting the last war.

        • David L. Caster

That is because our volatile civilian government is neither structured nor skilled to play that game.

Generalizing, the typical American is not good at perceiving the big picture. This is in large part because we have been conditioned to have a near learning horizon that leads to difficulty connecting cause and effect over time. Many flaws in our national decision process can be attributed to this general tendency.

      • BlackGayVeganAtheist

Supporters of lethal weapons for Ukraine don’t know what they want Russia to do? Hogwash. They want Putin to realize the incursion into Ukraine is becoming to expensive for Russia to continue

Right now Putin has no reason to negotiate. Let Ukraine bleed. Only 10,000+ killed so far? So what?

    • Uncle Mark

Why do i imagine that Trump is going to try to find a way to “blunder the weapons shipment” to the Russians?

  • greenmanTN

OT, but I just put on a big pot of brown beans with country ham and a lot of aromatics on for a lazy Xmas eve eve dinner (with cornbread, natch). This is my first time cooking them without soaking them overnight first, which my aunt says you don’t have to do, so Santa’s reindeer might not be the only thing shooting across the sky under their own steam tomorrow night. Ho ho ho!

    • Sam_Handwich

i don’t soak overnight, but i do par boil them and let them sit a while in the hot water

      • greenmanTN

A brought them to a boil then turned the heat to low and will cook them for about 6 hours (or more if needed). I’ve already put so much stuff in with them it’s too late to turn back. Wish me luck!

        https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=isjQgTuUnwU

        • Sam_Handwich

they’ll be fine, just may take a bit longer to cook than usual.

    • Tomcat

I find soaking over night helps remove some of the gas. Good luck.

      • Sam_Handwich

America’s Test Kitchen says to add a teaspoon of baking soda when par boiling, then rinse them and proceed ….becuz gas and chemisty or sumpin.

      • Joe in PA

Wait, wut are we talking about?

      • Clive Johnson

Whenever I pressure cook beans I never have a problem. Any other method? It’s a crap shoot, pun sort of intended.

    • FAEN

Hand out Beano’s before dinner lol.

    • BearEyes

a teaspoon of baking soda helps soften the outer shell of the bean and cook the beans a tad quicker (as well as more evenly).

    • BJORN RAGNVALDR

I found out, by watching cooking shows, then trying it myself, to buy canned beans of your choice, rinse, complete with your own recipe, heat to mix flavors …voila! No one knows. You gain consistent texture and lose nothing.

Accelerating the inevitable. Fine, k, next. So when does Putin invade Ukraine? When Mueller drops indictments in 2019?

  • safari

Russia has their warm-water port now. Why would they want the rest of the nation?

    • They don’t want the rest of the Ukraine- they do not want the Ukraine to be part of the EU or NATO without them- and they want some Russian majority parts of the eastern Ukraine to have plebiscites to rejoin Russia. Because most of the Ukraine was part of what was considered Russia from the 1600’s onwards. And a large percent of the population in the Eastern Ukraine are native Russians. Also, Russia is afraid of being encircled by the west in a string of alliances that they are left out of. They do not want Ukraine to be part of NATO, a system they still considered to be under domination of the USA. Russia is still pissed off that after Communism fell, the West rushed in and expanded NATO up to the borders without inviting them to join — which is what Yeltsin wanted.

      • True, up to a point, and the idea of Russia joining NATO was even floated.

Then Putin took over and that was that.

You guys expecting snow for Christmas? I’m hoping that it snows for Christmas, but it’s likely to rain because rain is far more likely than snow in western Washington State (we live on the Kitsap Peninsula). People tell me that it snows in the Cascades and the Olympic mountains, but snow is uncommon at lower elevations.

When I lived in Seattle almost 35 years ago, we got hit with about 8″ of snow in one day. It was fun to watch the cop cars spin out trying to come up First Hill and civilian drivers as well. I mean, Seattleites did NOT know how to drive in snow! lol

Funny thing was that we didn’t get any more snow for the rest of winter. It stayed cold enough for snow, but nothing more happened.

        • coram nobis

May really have been an emergency, or at least a needless crisis brought on by management screwups. That happened a lot at my brother’s old firm, and he’d have to do his Bosco the Wonder Dog bit and save the company from the latest fiasco. And again, and again. Finally, one Monday he comes in and finds another train wreck to clean up, and he sings eight bars of “Take This Job And Shove It” and walks out. Sure enough, the firm finally did crash a month later, but without him in the wreckage.

    • Had something analogous happen last year with one of my clients. There I am on Friday, Dec 16th(!), about to take the next two weeks off when I get this urgent call, “Hey, can you sit in on a meeting on Monday, something urgent has come up.”

I dial in to the meeting. Suddenly, I’m being asked to give up basically my entire holiday break. Not just ‘asked,’ but asked in that “We really need this, you have to do this, it’ll really cause problems if you don’t agree” kind of way.

So I do it. Shouldn’t have, in retrospect, but I did. Meanwhile everybody else at this particular client’s office is in fact off and away, so when I ran into problems there wasn’t even anyone around to help me out. I stumbled through, kept working through and past New Year’s. Deliver what they asked for by the middle of the month.

Then promptly found out it wasn’t needed after all. That other people NOT working through the holidays had caused the schedule to slip and what I’d done wasn’t really needed until mid-February.

Anyway, yeah, you really have my sympathies, LG. It really sucks when bosses pull shit like this. They gonna give you any days off in compensation at least?

      • BTW, same client tried to pull the same shit this year. Same manager, too. I said “No.” Life is too damned short.

        • Lumpy Gaga

Okay, I prematurely GIF-ulated Orson Welles clapping for someone else. Consider yourself applauded.

      • Lumpy Gaga

I’ll find out Tuesday. Ain’t going in. The burners under me have been on high for two calendar years. The transition is already making its own demands of the end of year, and I have a known all-nighter coming up Jan. 02 when actual networks and systems change over to what they’re going to look like forever now.

Coming in this weekend was never an option.

Now, had they had a secured place for me to move the shit to (it’s leased equipment filthy with PHI), it all would have been a one-day job and done. I’m not too grand to be a furniture mover, or to sacrifice the occasional weekend. But I have no control over real estate, which has made this particular job a soap opera instead of a simple matter of rolling up my sleeves.

  • coram nobis

By “provide” I take it the US will donate these AT missiles to the Ukrainians. Would it be cynical to wonder how many of these will turn up on the world’s arms markets in a few months’ time?

  • Halou

What are the odds these munitions are going to be inadequate for the combat environment? Like the tomahawk missiles he had fired at the sand dunes just outside that Syrian airbase earlier this year. Not the best choice when it comes to destroying aircraft, and certainly inadequate if the aim is to rip up the runway. And that’s assuming they were all good enough to hit what they were ostensibly aimed at, which they’re not.
The Syrians simply brushed the rubble away, filled in a few potholes and were back to flying extra raids against civilians the very next day. That Trump called Russia to call Syria so they can evacuate ahead of time also had something to do with the poor performance. Yeah, that’s totally not going to happen again.

Also, just as Trump owns shares in the company that manufactures tomahawk missiles and actually made a profit on the raid, since armed forces regulations require every time munitions are used replacements have to be acquired, does he own shares in the company / companies who make the weapons that are supposed to be sold to Ukraine?

right, because you never want to blow up tanks on an offesinve.

  • OT- Princess Michael of Kent, who usually gets the annual award as the least tactful member of the extended British Royal Family (which should not be surprising since her father was a member of the SS) issued a formal apology for wearing this rather tactless “blackamoor” brooch (yes, that is what it is called) to the Queen’s annual Christmas dinner for the extended Royal Family last week at Buckingham Palace. It seems that many thought it rather insensitive as Meghan Markle was being introduced to the her future family in this high profile event. Seriously What was she thinking? https://www.buzz.ie/news/princess-michael-kent-racist-megan-markle-266615

Honestly, princess or not, she wouldn’t be getting any further invitations to my Christmas fete.

Liz, honey, it’s OK to jettison bad family members. Families all across the US are shattered over Dumpster, it’s fine to ditch somebody over a “blackamoor” brooch.

      • Honestly, the woman owns a TON of exquisite jewelry. Her mother-in-law was Princess Marina, who was married to a grandson of Queen Mary of the UK, and she herself is a granddaughter of the King of Greece, great granddaughter of a Tsar of Russia, Kaiser Wilhelm, etc. – we are talking serious tchotchkes. And she picks out this????????

      • Yeah…and here’s the kicker: The Russian army depends far, far more now on attack helicopters than tanks, a practice they developed in Afghanistan in the 1980s. Hence when the U.S. wanted to support the Mujaheddin back then, we sent shoulder-launched anti-aircraft Stinger missiles.

    • We kind of are now. America may be, on average, a very wealthy country, but it is now operating in 3rd world banana republic mode.

Also, historians will note that one of the first harbingers of a falling, failing empire is when it begins emptying its treasury and spending it on short-sighted crap & militaristic ventures, rather than investing in its citizens or making and meeting long-term goals.

      • David L. Caster

Exactly. Countries that fail in their responsibilities to their citizens are on the path to destroying themselves. Americans seem determined to create a government that does not protect their interests.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas

      • LesbianTippingHabits

The best way to let MSNBC know what you think is not to watch it.

    • another_steve

I have a theory (only a theory) that goes like this:

MSNBC and CNN conduct focus groups and internal polling designed to see whether their content is maximally pleasing to a maximum number of viewers. Progressive viewers and not-progressive viewers alike. The goal is to maximize viewership, which permits the cable networks to charge more per-second for having the commercial sponsors’ ads aired. You know – Cialis, Medicare supplemental plans, arthritis meds, reverse mortgages, etc. etc.

All the cable news networks are in business for one primary purpose: to make money from their commercial sponsors. Anyone who believes otherwise is being naive.

I’m guessing MSNBC is removing Walsh because the focus groups and polling have shown that she’s a hindrance when it comes to maximizing commercial sponsorship dollars.

I like Walsh and am sorry to see her go, but this is cutthroat capitalism at work and all players buy in to it or simply refuse to play.

      • All the cable news networks are in business for one primary purpose: to
make money from their commercial sponsors. Anyone who believes
        otherwise is being naive.

i used to believe that. but as i think we were discussing here yesterday, for example: faux news loses money, every year. MSNBC is owned in large part by people who make money from war. CNN… don’t get me started.

anyway, the myth of the modern american liberal/progressive media is just that. myth. don’t fall for it. don’t buy into the constructions about it. realize that to the rest of the world, our “left leaning” mainstream media is far right. maybe center-right, by some standards.

there is no all powerful left in america. the number of people here who are truly, by a strict academic definition of leftism, far left? it’s tiny. and that group is mostly made up of poor, powerless, media nobodies who have exactly no influence in the national democratic party or any of its entities outside of one or two areas around places like Ann Arbor or Berkeley.

please stop blaming the failures of moderates and centrists who make up the vast majority of american dem voters and political agents on a tiny minority of those who are different, and very much hated, despite being not in any way in power.

        • Natty Enquirer

    Soap’s done!

It’s a whitened olive-heavy soap for good conditioning and mild cleansing, with a heaping teaspoon of colloidal oatmeal for skin friendliness. I scented it with vanilla and rosewood, heavy on the vanilla, which is why the color is already cream. As it oxidizes, the vanilla would turn it mahogany. With the whitener I used, it’ll only go a rich, midrange brown. One can use that as a design element, but in this case I mixed it into the whole thing.

It’s a little grainy up top because it overheated. That’ll settle down.

If you (generic “you”) are a Trump supporter, you agree with everything Trump is quoted as saying there. What we’ve learned from this national nightmare of ours is that a solid 32-40 percent of Americans are bigots. Deplorables. Many (not all but perhaps most) of these are also theofascists who long for the end of secularism and the establishment of a Christian nation.

      So what to do.

        • another_steve

Gotta be careful not to generalize re what “Libertarianism” is or is not, Karl. There are Libertarians on the left and on the right.

          Many schools of Libertarianism.

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertarianism

          • Karl Dubhe 2

I still view that philosophy as ‘liberty to own other humans as property’.

In the end, if everything’s for sale; so are humans.

          • another_steve

The more rabid right wing schools of Libertarianism certainly hold to that view.

I consider myself a left-of-center Democrat with Libertarian leanings. I want progressive and compassionate government, but only as needed to ensure no intrusion into the affairs of a sane people. I trust in the common wisdom and don’t want/need government to define it for me.

Our American government once defined consensual sodomy among consenting same-sex adults as illegal. The common wisdom of the people overcame that.

            Libertarianism at its finest.

Ronald Reagan prepared the way for Donald Trump. It was under Reagan’s presidency that right wing groups like the Family Research Council gained entree to the halls of power.

I have this memory that haunts me to this day.

In 1981, the year Reagan became President, my man and I were walking in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of D.C. We passed a posh townhouse in front of which people dressed in their finest were merrily celebrating. Toasting one another with what looked like champagne glasses.

They were happy. They were rejoicing.

The townhouse was the then-headquarters of the Family Research Council.

        • Ninja0980

Amazing how someone like Goldwater (who my grandparents loved) but was still a Libertarian idiot knew the danger of the Religious Reich taking over the Republican Party would be.
My grandparents knew too and were always afraid the fights between the moderate Republicans in Kansas (Bill Graves) and the far right (Brownback) would end with the far right winning and Kansas being ruined.
Sad to say, they were right.
Only good thing about them passing away in the 2000’s is they didn’t live to see it.

          • another_steve

I’m old enough to remember when you could be honorable and Republican at the same time. 1960s and 70s. I can’t remember if as a young man living in New York City I ever voted for a Republican. I very well may have.

Today, in the day of Donald Trump, you cannot be considered an honorable person if you identify as, or vote for a, Republican.

I generally avoid “blanket stereotyping” of that sort, but in my heart I truly believe it to be true.

  • TuuxKabin

Any Christmas jokes to lighten this heavy scene?

    • JCF

      An oldie but goodie:

Q: Why don’t Santa&Mrs Claus have any children?
A: Because Santa only comes once a year, and that’s in the chimney!

      • TuuxKabin

        Didn’t know that.
Why did the kitty think it was in the north pole?
It looked down and saw Sandy Claws.

      • TuuxKabin

        A longer one.
Christmas Eve Mass, my sister late as usual running up the steps of the church falls flat on her face as the priest is closing the door.
He tells Rebecca, “your can’t enter the house of the Lord like that!”
Her blouse tore open, both tits exposed.
“Father, I have a Divine right.”
“Yeah, your left isn’t so bad either, but you’re going to have to cover your head.”

      • coram nobis

        Q. Which of Santa’s assistants would visit Gertrude Stein on Christmas Eve?
        A. Elf Scott Fitzgerald.

    • Treant

Q: Why is Santa so jolly?
A: Because he knows where all the naughty boys live.

      • JCF

I’m betting there’s a straight version of this joke, too.

        • Karl Dubhe 2

Ya, but that’s more creepy. As Santa’s an old man, so pairing him with little girls after Roy Moore; say no more.

          • JCF

Um, if we assume that “boys” means “of legal age”, then we have to assume “girls” does, too. It’s equally OK/equally creepy, either way.

          • Karl Dubhe 2

Still more pervy for an old guy to hook up with a younger female than a younger man. 🙂

            But, yah…

      • TuuxKabin

        What about us men?

        • Treant

Santa is eternal, so you’re of insignificant age to him and always will be.

But Santa always asks for consent and only empties his sack around boys of at least 25.

          • TuuxKabin

Oh. Thanks. Okay then, he better have a couple of sacks with him.

        • JT

Some of us men are naughty boys sometimes.

          • TuuxKabin

            I try.

    • JT

      Q: What’s Santa’s favorite snack food?

      A: Crisp Pringles.

    • coram nobis

      Q. If Rudolf isn’t available Christmas Eve, who will Santa get to be his red-nosed reindeer?
      A. Steve Bannon.

      • 2guysnamedjoe

Santa and his sleigh will travel the world, making only right turns.

        • jerry

And stopping only to hold up liquor stores.

    • Dreaming Vertebrate

      Putin Khuilo!
      {Putin is a little dickhead!}

  • Cuberly Deux

I tend to think canning someone a few days before Christmas as being fraught with vindictiveness, or sending a cloaked threat. Long time ago when I worked at a failing dotcom, they had a series of layoffs the week before Christmas. The dept that was hit the hardest was the Sales group. It was decimated. It was no secret that the primary founders of the dotcom did NOT get along with the sales staff that the Director of Sales had assembled.

Why do I feel that firing Walsh a few days before Christmas has a subtext?

    • another_steve

No subtext. It’s American Capitalism at work.

Capitalism is amoral. Without morals. Neither moral nor immoral.

The timing of Walsh’s firing is, I’m sure, purely coincidental/arbitrary.

      • JCF

No, not at all. Friday before Christmas? It was done then, as “news dump”. MUCH less coverage, ergo less chance for backlash.

  • Will Parkinson

No way this will go tits up.

  • SoCalGal20

This is an interesting ruling from yesterday. Maine’s SoS is on Kobach’s voter fraud commission. He sued the commission for access to commission documents and won lol! Read this thread.

  • I have to ask – why would Putin’s medium-range goal be for the USA & Russia to enter into a proxy war?

  • Lazycrockett
    • Ninja0980

I remember this case and it sickened me then.
Should be noted the cop in this case end up killing himself when he was going to be charged with sexually abusing two boys.
Explains his real motivations for what he did to this poor kid.

      • djcoastermark

See above, Abbott was one of those xstain conservative hypocrites, to say the least.

    • peacfulseas inWA

Check every one of THEIR computers police and judges. Several in this area have been exposed for child porn. Disgusting the latitude the disgusting ass sitting in the WH has given authorities to violate personal freedoms.

      • djcoastermark

Read my post on this subject, a real eye opener. And yes, it involves child molestation.

        • peacfulseas inWA

I didn’t need to. It’s almost a monthly headline with many that occur in a berg north of here, Lynden,WA. A town where you do not mow your lawns on Sunday, main part of town not open on same. A squeaky clean white enclave of perverts of the worse kind where everything gets sweep under the hay bales and dumped in the manure ponds and the inhabitants won’t say shit if their mouths were full of it but want to tell you how to live your life. A 2 issue berg A) against any form of abortions B) Religious Liberty to discriminate against the ” others “.

          • djcoastermark

Eew, just eew. Not any place I would chose to live, but I also realize many people do not have the choice of where they live.

    • djcoastermark

The search warrant was sought by David Abbott, who, if you read on, was quite the creep. What an absolute horror and nightmare Trey had to face, for something that is legal and was consensual between him and his girlfriend. Both who are legally allowed sexual relations in Virginia. But, it comes as no big surprise coming from Manassas and the land of the newly ousted holy roller bob marshal. And even worse, this was done by detective David Abbott who later committed suicide (dec 2015) while police were trying to arrest Abbott on child molestation charges. ( ages 11 and 13) The irony of Abbott, was that he was also worked on the “Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce , and was awarded in 2013 the city’s “Integrity In Investigative Work ” award. Gotta love those conservatives.

My wife just brought me a nice flute of champers, so I’d like to make a toast to everyone here at JMG, especially our host, Joe Jervis. To everyone in the JMG family, their friends and loved ones: a very happy holiday season and may 2018 be a good year for all!

  • Falconlights

I wonder how Putie will feel about that. Not happy would be my guess.

kind of sad how many “O/T” subjects there are here. Birthdays, penises and puppies. Sad.
Anyway…….for those who give a shit….., sitting here in DK with my husband, and as much as we both hate war, we feel that this is a positive signal to send. Will it help? don’t know. for sure Trump will get hit with shit for this from all sides. That’s ok – he deserves it. My hope is that the Ukraine is not taken over by Russia.
